    Trips and Tours

    CAVE of ALISTRATI (45km):

Very impressive is the big variety of stalactites and stalagmites inside the

cave mostly because of the difference of their shapes and their age

The older stalactites are mainly in the galleries which are on the rightside of the entrance. On the other hand the "infant" stalactites on the left

    side of entrance .

    ANCIENT PHILIPI (65km):

Folow the Motorway A2 to avala untilthe second e!it avala then folow the

    #ational $oad %2 with the &irection&rama after %' (m you see on the right

    side )hilipi.

.hilippi was founded by the king of 0acedon+ Philip II+ in 35 !C on the site of the %hasian colony of Crenides 6789 ; miles north?west of@a#alla+ on the northern border of the marsh that in Antiuity co#ered the entire plain separating it from the .angaion hills to thesouth"

%he obecti#e of founding the town was to take control of the neighboring gold mines and to establish a garrison at a strategicpassage: the site controlled the route between Amphipolis and 4eapolis+ part of the great royal route which crosses 0acedoniafrom the east to the west and which was reconstructed later by the oman mpire as the Eia gnatia"

.hilip ,, endowed the new city with important fortifications+ which partially blocked the passage between the swamp and 0r"Orbelos+ and sent colonists to occupy it" .hilip also had the marsh partially drained+ as is attested by the writer %heophrastus"%he disco#ery of new gold mines near the city+ at Asyla+ contributed to the wealth of the kingdom+ and .hilip established a mintthere" %he city was finally fully integrated into the kingdom under .hilip E"

%he city remained despite its modest si-e of perhaps  "### people" hen the omans destroyed the Antigonid dynasty of0acedon in ') BC and di#ided it into four separate states merides!+ it was Amphipolis and not .hilippi that became the capitalof the eastern 0acedonian state"

Almost nothing is known about the city in this period" All that remains is the Greek theater+ the foundations of a house under theoman forum+ the walls+ and a little temple dedicated to a hero cult" %his monument co#ers the tomb of a certain $ekestos andis dedicated to the HIJKI8< ktistès!+ the foundation hero of the city"

    Philippi During the Roman Era

%he city reappears in the sources during the oman ci#il war that followed the assassination of ulius Caesar" 3is heirs $ar%Antony and Octavian confronted the assassins of Caesar+ 0arcus unius Brutus and Cassius+ at the !attle of Philippi in theplain to the west of the city in October+ 1M BC" Antony and Octa#ian were #ictorious in this final battle against the partisans of theepublic" %hey released some of their #eteran soldiers+ probably from legion NNE,,,+ and coloni-ed them in the city+ which was

    refounded as Colonia Eictri$ .hilippensium"

,n 2/ BC+ Octa#ian became oman emperor+ reorgani-ed the colony+ and established more settlers there+ #eterans possibly fromthe .raetorian Guard and other ,talians" %he city was renamed Colonia ,ulia .hilippensis+ and then Colonia Augusta ,ulia.hilippensis after anuary M) BC+ when Octa#ian recei#ed the title Augustus from the oman &enate"

Following this second renaming+ and perhaps after the first+ the territory of .hilippi was centuriated di#ided into suares of land!and distributed to the colonists" %he city kept its 0acedonian walls+ and its general plan was modified only partially by the

construction of a forum+ a little to the east of the site of Greek agora" ,t was a = miniature &ome+= under the municipal law ofome and go#erned by two military officers+ the duum#iri+ who were appointed directly from ome"

%he colony recogni-ed its dependence on the mines that brought it its pri#ileged position on the Eia gnatia" %his wealth wasshown by the many monuments that were particularly imposing considering the relati#ely small si-e of the urban area: the forum+laid out in two terraces on both sides of the main road+ was constructed in se#eral phases between the reigns of Claudius and Antoninus .ius+ and the theatre was enlarged and e$panded in order to hold oman games" %here is an abundance of 'atininscriptions testifying the prosperity of the city"

    Paul in Philippi

,n 1( or */ AD+ the city was #isited by the apostle .aul during his second missionary ourney" According to the book of Acts+ hewas guided there by a #ision of =a man of 0acedonia= Acts ':(!" Accompanied by &ilas+ %imotheus+ and Luke+ .aul preachedin .hilippi" %he ewish community there seems to ha#e been small+ but .aul and his friends found ewish women gathered at ari#er to the west of the city on the &abbath" %here .aul bapti-ed Lydia+ a purple dye merchant+ who in#ited the missionaries tostay at her home Acts ':'1?'*!"

,n another account recorded in Acts+ .aul dro#e out an e#il spirit from a sla#e girl who worked as a fortune teller" 3er ownersbecame angry and dragged .aul and &ilas into the marketplace and complained about them before the magistrates" A crowd oined in the condemnation+ and the missionaries were stripped and flogged+ then thrown into prison" At midnight+ howe#er+ agreat earthuake came and the prison doors flew open" %he ailer nearly killed himself o#er it+ but .aul talked him out of it andcon#erted him" %he ne$t morning+ the magistrates released .aul and &ilas and asked them to lea#e the city" Acts ':'?1/!

.aul #isited the city on two other occasions+ in * and *) AD" %he pistle to the .hilippians dates from around *1?** and showsthe immediate impact of .auls preaching" %he subseuent de#elopment of Christianity in .hilippi is well?attested+ notably by aletter from .olycarp of &myrna addressed to the community in .hilippi around '/+ and by funerary inscriptions"

Philippi During the Early Christian Era

%he first church attested in the city is a small building that was probably originally a small prayer house" %his !asilica of Paul+identified by an mosaic inscription on the pa#ement+ is dated around 212 from a mention by the bishop .orphyrios+ who waspresent at the Council of &erdica that year"

Although there is neither archaeological nor literary e#idence for the foundation of the Christian community by .aul+ theprosperity of the city in the *th and th centuries was attributed to him and to his martyr cult" As in other cities+ many new

ecclesiastical buildings were constructed at this time" Seven churches were constructed in .hilippi between the mid?1th centuryand the end of the th+ some of which competed in si-e and decoration with the most beautiful buildings in %hessalonica+ or e#enthose of Constantinople"

%he relationship of the plan and of the architectural decoration of !asilica ! with 3agia &ophia and &aint ,rene in Constantinopleaccorded a pri#ileged place to this church in the history of early Christian art" %he comple$ cathedral which took the place of theBasilica of .aul at the end of the *th century+ constructed around an octagonal church+ also ri#aled the churches ofConstantinople"

,n the same age+ the fortifications of the city were rebuilt in order to better defend against the growing instability in the Balkans" ,n1)2+ the city was besieged by the Ostrogoths+ who were unable to take it but burned down the surrounding #illages"

Philippi During the Byzantine and Ottoman Era

Already weakened by the &la#ic in#asions at the end of the th century+ which ruined the agrarian economy of 0acedon+ andprobably also by the .lague of ustinian in *1)+ the city was almost totally destroyed by an earth(ua%e around )*+ from which

it ne#er reco#ered" %here was a small amount of acti#ity there in the )th century+ but the city was now hardly more than a #illage"

%he !yzantine +mpire possibly maintained a garrison there+ but in >2> the city was taken by the Bulgars under khan ,sbul+ whocelebrated their #ictory with a monumental inscription on the stylobate in Basilica B+ now partially in ruins" %he site of .hilippi wasso strategically sound that the By-antines attempted #ery soon to recapture it ca" >*/" &e#eral seals of ci#il ser#ants and otherBy-antine officials+ dated to the first half of the (th century+ pro#e the presence of By-antine armies in the city"

Around ((+ mperor 4icephorus ,, .hocas rebuilt the fortifications on the acropolis and in part of the city" %hese gradually

helped weaken Bulgar power and strengthen the By-antine presence in the area" ,n '/))+ !ishop !asil ,artzimopoulos rebuiltpart of the defenses inside the city" %he city began to prosper once more+ as witnessed by the Arab geographer Al ,drisi+ whomentions it as a centre of business and wine production around ''*/"

After a brief occupation by the Franks after the -ourth Crusade and the capture of Constantinople in 'M/1+ the city fell into thehands of the Ser.s" &till+ it remained a notable fortification on the route of the ancient Eia gnatiaP in '2*1+ the pretender to theBy-antine throne+ 0atthew Cantacu-enus+ was captured there by the &erbs"

%he city was abandoned at an unknown date" hen the French tra#eller .ierre Belon #isited it in the )th century+ there wasnothing .ut ruins+ used by the %urks as a uarry" %he name of the city was preser#ed at first by a %urkish #illage on the nearbyplain+ .hilibedik+ which has since disappeared+ and then by a Greek #illage in the mountains"

    Archaeological Excavation at Philippi

Only noted or briefly described by 'th century tra#ellers+ the first archaeological description of the city was made in '>* by.errot+ then in '>' by L" 3eu-ey and 3" Daumet in their famous Mission archéologique de Macédoine" 4e#ertheless+ the firste$ca#ations did not begin until the summer of )*)/+ and were soon interrupted by the First orld ar"

%he e$ca#ations+ carried out by the Qcole franRaise dAthSnes+ were renewed in )*"# and continued until '(2)" During this timethe Greek theatre+ the forum+ Basilicas A and B+ the baths+ and the walls were e$ca#ated" After the &econd orld ar+ Greekarchaeologists returned to the site"
