A bit about Rwanda…

• Landlocked, densely populated– 407 people per square kilometer– Same size as Maryland, minus Eastern Shore (5.9

million people in Maryland/10-13 million in Rwanda

–64% of members of parliament are women (highest percentage in the world)–$644 per capita income–Total fertility rate: 4.6 births per woman–HIV Prevalence: 2.9%

The Genocide

• 1994: 700,000-1 million Tutsi and moderate Hutu were killed

• Global Health Interprofessional Council Goal:– To provide a platform by which…researchers can interact to develop multidisciplinary research

themes, as well as develop a high quality and affordable multidisciplinary training programs in global health giving existing students and working professionals the opportunity to pursue a global health career.

Global Health & Interprofessionalism

Overview of Project

• May 15-June 15 2014• University of Rwanda invited University of

Maryland students to collaborate with UR students on a needs assessment– Goal: Determine the nature of UR student needs so that UR administration can

best seek funding and support to address those needs

• Project:– Held focus groups with students throughout UR Health Sciences College, at

multiple campuses– Work with student leaders from UR to determine domains of concern– Work with student leaders from UR to develop a student needs survey to be

administered in September 2014.

Findings and Outputs

• Student needs centered around:– Finances/scholarship/school fees– Housing– Academics– Technology

• Survey: Developed survey to be used in coming academic year

• Report of work delivered to University of Rwanda

The marathon

• 350 meters in altitude change• Kigali altitude: 5100 feet (Denver: 5280 feet)• “Land of a thousand hills”
