But what of those who have not been as blessed as you are? That is the subject of Jesus’ teaching in Matt. 25. Go read the whole chapter. No… seriously….go read the whole chapter of Matthew 25, I’ll wait. It starts off with the parable of the wise and foolish virgins. The foolish virgins were the ones who did not have lamps full of oil. Likewise people with no faith (dry lamps) will be left out of the great eternal banquet. Then Jesus moves on to the parable of the talents. People who use their earthly resource to the glory of God will be greatly blessed and those who waste their earthly resources will suffer earthly consequences. Then finally, he takes up Judgment Day. The expectation of the King is that wise virgins keep their lamps full of Word and Sacrament, manage their earthly gifts for the glory of God AND do their best to care for the foolish virgins and poor stewards. So of course a foolish virgin is always out of oil and of course a poor steward is always broke and of course it is our privilege as God’s children to minister to them so that they might grow in faith, find some joy in this life and eventually join us in the heavenly banquet and that is what we call Social Ministry. We care for people in trouble. It does not matter whether or not they deserve it. It does not matter whether or not they are grateful. We care for all people because when we do it is as though we are caring for Christ himself. In His Service,

Rev. 22:13 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

I am fairly certain that no little boy ever grew up dreaming that one day maybe he could hold a “will work for food” sign under the I-55 underpass. No little girl ever dreamed that maybe one day she can wait 2 hours for a appointment in the welfare office with her four children who have four different fathers. No one hopes for these things to be in their lives and yet there they are and if they are not in yours, there go you by the grace of God.

“Oh, but I made good choices. I worked hard for a college degree. I saved my money and didn’t use credit cards. I ate right, got plenty of rest and exercised daily.” Well good for you! But not a single one of us is far from homelessness and poverty. I don’t care how much you planned and prepared. Ask Job about how right living and hard work should get you something in this world. If you are smart, you keep your mouth shut, save yourself from straining a muscle patting yourself on the back and thank God that he has given you so much more than you need.

But what of those who have not been as blessed as you are? That is the subject of Jesus’ teaching in Matt. 25. Go read the whole chapter. No…seriously….go read the whole chapter of Matthew 25, I’ll wait.

Congratulations and blessing to this year’s confirmation class: Joey Urso, Olivia Rundgren, and David Stahlke.

Beginning on Wednesday, April 30 you will be considered a part of the high school youth group, Big House.

Welcome to the incoming 6th graders: Elijah Brockie, Maggie Myers, Griffin Scofield, and Peter Stahlke. As of

Wednesday, April 30 you will be considered part of the junior high youth group, Camp C.H.A.O.S.

Confirmation Camp: NEW this summer for middle school students. The yearly confirmation retreat will be replaced by 3 separate “camp” days on the 3rd Wednesday of June, July, and August. You will be getting a letter soon with complete information. But for now, put these dates on your calendar: Wednesdays, June 18, July 16, and August 20 @ 8:00 – 6:30.

Wednesday night dinners: Starting on May 7 until August there is no official schedule for youth group meals.

Anyone who is willing to feed about 15-20 hungry high school kids please notify me.

Vacation Bible School – July 14 - 18 : Eric and Olivia Rundgren are bravely running VBS again this year – and they need YOUR help. Let them or me know if you can be there. Confirmation students will start their July camp day by helping out together on Wednesday.

Summer Trip Days are back! The next newsletter will have the complete schedule of Thursday trips. There will be a variety of activities, both at local attractions and also fun projects to do at Trinity. We’ll mix it up, day time and evenings to meet the requirements of everyone’s schedules.

Here’s what you can look forward to for the rest of April and May:

Saturday, April 19 @ Noon: Pizza and Easter Breakfast Set-Up

C’mon, admit it – you still like to decorate Easter eggs. And you like pizza, right? Join us for the fun and food, then stay to help set up for Easter breakfast.

Sunday, April 20 Easter Breakfast

You should be getting a call from Dave Barry about helping out with the breakfast. We love providing the service for this meal, but we really need lots of help in the kitchen so all the dishes get done in time for everyone to attend worship. If you haven’t heard from Dave and are willing to help, please contact me. Parents and kids are needed. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease help us.

Wednesday, April 23 @ 6:00-8:00 Big House is back!

Italian beef for dinner then we’re planning for the induction of 8th graders on April 30. Plus, Pastor will be continuing his study of the book of Daniel.

High school youth we need you for 2 projects today.

2. Paul Stahlke has drawn a beautiful mural in the new youth lounge. If you’d like to help paint it, come for lunch right after late service and then get to work on the painting. Those who are working at the early shift of the dart tournament can help out when there is “down time” in serving.

Men’s StuffSo What?

Over the years I have become fairly cynical about what I read, watch and hear. I do not believe there is such a thing as “unbiased” media. In today’s world most media conveys a specific point of view, agenda, or call to action. The same “news” story reported on five different channels will offer five different conclusions. Corporations and governments alike employ a cadre of media specialists to provide “spin,” so their point of view is portrayed as fact.

Over the years I have looked for the “So what?” in what I hear, see or read, especially in the media.

I define the “So what?” as an action or attitude that the author wishes me to adopt.

For example, when watching a car commercial, the “So what?” is that I be moved to purchase that vehicle. Those “So whats?” are easy to spot.

When I watch a movie or TV show, the “So what?” may be a little harder to find, but it’s still there. For example, any TV show that involves “ordinary” people singing, dancing or performing has the “So what?” that each of us are talented, capable and have an opportunity to win millions of dollars.

Ads promoting the lottery offer the “So what?” that you will be a hero to school kids as you spend your money on the lottery, which funds education. Some of these ads leave me feeling as if I am a terrible person who hates kids if I don’t plunk down my dollars for them -- at least once in a while.

Now some of you may be saying to yourself, “So what?”

The “So what?” I want you to think about is to become a critical consumer of media. Too often we accept everything we hear or read without thinking objectively about it. We buy into the adage that “If it’s on the Internet, on the national news, or in the newspaper, then it must be true ... at least mostly.” This also applies to hearing it from “live” sources as when we wholesale accept something because we heard it from a friend or family member. Suffice it to say, critical thinking should accompany us wherever we go.

As for me, I read the fine print, look for the angles, and will not send money to Africa because someone died and named me in his will.

This whole critical-thinking thing is something worthwhile to pass along to the next generation too. The world’s awash in hyperbole and trivial nonsense, and it’s targeted (as it has been for years) at the very young as well. For impressionable, young minds the world is full of choices like never before. Some are of value; many are not, and it’s a huge help if by our input and experience we can help them see the difference.
