Divine Service Setting 3 (LSB pg 184) July 12, 2015 8:00 a.m.
AS WE GATHER Throughout the ages people have wondered whether the dead could
rise to life again. Hollywood’s fascination with zombies is only the latest manifestation.
When Jesus preached after Herod had beheaded John the Baptist, the king feared our Lord
was John come back to haunt him. His guilty conscience accused him, as ours should if we
do not trust in our Savior’s sacrifice for us. His resurrection professes loudly that death is
not the end for anyone who puts trust in Him. Our Lord is not part of the “living dead”; He
is death’s living conqueror!

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
OPENING HYMN: “Saints, See the Cloud of Witnesses” LSB 667
INVOCATION, CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.
P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God
our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us
forgiveness.
P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C: who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.
P: O almighty God, merciful Father,
C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with
which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal
punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and
I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent,
bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and
merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.
3
P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant
of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the
command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
INTROIT
P: For your name’s sake, O LORD, preserve my life!
C: In your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble!
P: Hear my prayer, O LORD; give ear to my pleas for mercy!
C: In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!
P: Enter not into judgment with your servant,
C: for no one living is righteous before you.
P: Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love,
C: for in you I trust.
ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
P: For your name’s sake, O Lord, preserve my life!
C: In your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble!

SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And with thy spirit.
P: Let us pray… O Lord, You granted Your prophets strength to resist the temptations
of the devil and courage to proclaim repentance.
C: Give us pure hearts and minds to follow Your Son faithfully even into suffering
and death;
P: through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Amos 7:7-15
This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true
to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. And the LORD asked me, "What do you
see, Amos?" "A plumb line," I replied. Then the Lord said, "Look, I am setting a plumb
line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer. "The high places of Isaac
will be destroyed and the sanctuaries of Israel will be ruined; with my sword I will rise
against the house of Jeroboam." Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to
Jeroboam king of Israel: "Amos is raising a conspiracy against you in the very heart
of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words. For this is what Amos is saying:
“‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their
native land.”’ Then Amaziah said to Amos, "Get out, you seer! Go back to the land
of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. Don't prophesy
6
anymore at Bethel, because this is the king's sanctuary and the temple of the
kingdom." Amos answered Amaziah, "I was neither a prophet nor a prophet's son, but
I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. But the LORD took me
from tending the flock and said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'
L: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
HYMN: “God Has Spoken by His Prophets” LSB 583
EPISTLE: Ephesians 1:3-14
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has
blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in
Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be
holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be
adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his
pleasure and will-- to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has
freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his
blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he
lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. And he made known to us the
mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to
be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment--to bring all
things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. In him we were
also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out
everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were
the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were
included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation.
Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who
is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's
possession--to the praise of his glory.
L: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA
HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 6:14-29
L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the sixth chapter.
King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were
saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous
powers are at work in him." Others said, "He is Elijah." And still others claimed,
"He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago." But when Herod heard this,
he said, "John, the man I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!" For Herod
himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in
prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had
married. For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your
brother's wife." So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him.
But she was not able to, because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing
him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly
puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him. Finally the opportune time came. On his
birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and
the leading men of Galilee. When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced,
she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for
anything you want, and I'll give it to you." And he promised her with an oath,
"Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom." She went out and said
to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of John the Baptist," she
answered. At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to
give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter." The king was greatly
distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse
her. So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The
man went, beheaded John in the prison, and brought back his head on a platter. He
presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. On hearing of this, John's
disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

APOSTLE’S CREED
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered
under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the
right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the
living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the
life everlasting. Amen

ChristCare Small Group Ministry The vision for ChristCare Ministry is
that: “ChristCare Groups are caring communities that transform lives by personalizing God’s Word.” All of the ChristCare groups are the same in
that they are involved in four ministry activities.
Community Building and Care. “Therefore encourage one another and build each
other up…” (1 Thess. 5:11) Group members care for each other and experience
Christian community as they share life’s ups and downs.
Biblical Equipping. “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly…” (Col. 3:16) Members not only study the Bible together but also take that Word into their daily
lives by continuing to Obey, Meditate and Reflect on His Word when apart.
Prayer and Worship. “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and
spiritual songs.” (Eph. 5:19) Members not only pray together but also sing the
doxology and speak the psalms and listen to Christian music together to praise and
Worship God.
Missional Service. “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love
and good works.” (Heb. 10:24) All the groups are involved in bringing God’s love, in a
practical way, to others outside of the group by meeting needs in both the
congregation and community.
