IntroductionWelcome to this simple form of sung Daily Office for use at Trinity Church of England School in Lewisham.

It is the prayer of our ‘little community’ of priests: the Chaplain and Head Master, along with anyone else who wishes to come and join us.

On a typical day our schedule for worship in chapel is as follows:

7am: Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament7.30am: Mass9am: Lauds (morning prayer)12.15pm: Sext (daytime prayer)Late afternoon: Vespers (evening prayer)

(The Office of Readings and Compline are said privately.)

Participants will need:

This booklet, and A Psalter (e.g. the inclusive-language version of the Grail

Psalter)

The Reader will also need:

A Roman Missal (for the gospel reading at Lauds, and the epistle at Vespers);

A short, non-scriptural reading (for daytime prayer), taken from:

o the Office of Readings,o Magnificat magazine, oro A People’s Companion to the Breviary

A Collect, taken from:o The Divine Office, o Common Worship Daily Prayer, o Proclaiming All Your Wonders or similar collections.

About Trinity Liturgy of the Hours

We hope that this form of prayer is simple enough for our many visitors easily to join in.It seeks to use expansive language for God, as part of our vision of being an inclusive community faithful to the Anglo-Catholic tradition of the Woodard family of schools.

The Angelus precedes the Office, at Lauds, Daytime prayer and Vespers. (The exception to this is in Eastertide, when the Regina Coeli is sung instead.)

Feasts, Solemnities and Seasons are marked by:

- a suitable Office Hymn after the Opening Chants;- proper or common antiphons for the day or season used in

addition to the Common Antiphon before and after the (proper or common) canticles or psalms;

- Psalm 62, the Benedicite, and Psalm 150 are always used in the psalmody at Lauds.

- suitable readings for the season or the day;- appropriate intercessions from the Divine Office or Magnificat for

the day;- the Collect of the day.

The psalmody in general is that of Lauds and Vespers in the Divine Office, except at Daytime Prayer, where Psalm 118 is used in a weekly cycle. (This follows the pre-1910 Roman Office; the theme of Divine Wisdom is also very appropriate to prayer in school.) Although the psalmody of The Divine Office is also given as an option.

For completeness the psalms of the Daytime hour in the Divine Office may be used at a second Daytime Office or between the readings at the Office of Readings

The Liturgical (Vulgate) numbering of the psalms is used throughout.

Canticles and Psalms are sung in alternating stanzas: the Officiant will sing the first stanza; the others will sing the next; and so on in this manner.

Where a stanza has fewer lines than the chant tone, the final line of the stanza will always be sung to the last line of the tone.

The Old Testament Canticle at Lauds and the New Testament Canticle at Vespers are chosen by the Officiant, except on Feasts and Solemnities when the Benedicite is always used at Lauds, and the canticle at Vespers is according to The Divine Office.

These canticles are sung by the Officiant alone, while the assembly sing the Antiphon between the stanzas. Canticles may be chosen from The Divine Office, Songs and Prayers of the Church, Common Worship: Daily Prayer or other appropriate sources.

The Gospel Canticles always use the chant form when an Office Hymn has been used.

Any Office may conclude with the sign of peace as indicated. This is particularly appropriate where guests are present.

Private prayers before the officeBefore the first Hour of the day:Lord, God, I offer this Divine Office to you, together with the adoration and praise of the angels and saints, as well as that of all the priests of your Church, all holy monks and nuns, all consecrated to lives of prayer and all the devout faithful. I present to you, holy Father, together with the prayers of holy Mary the God-bearer, this chorus of prayer, made holy in the Heart of Jesus and made one with His most holy prayer. May all the words of this prayer be acts of pure love, adoration, thanksgiving, satisfaction, trust and surrender to your holy Will. Let this prayer be for my weak self a spiritual communion, an act of humility, and of perfect self-denial; and may it be a sacrifice of praise and glory to you, O Blessed Trinity. Amen.

I offer this Office for (here state the intention) to the glory of the Holy and Undivided Trinity and for the salvation of the whole world.
