Internships

An academic internship is an approved and monitored work experience of a pre-professional nature that meets specific learning goals and is related to an academic field of study. The work at the internship site under the direction of a site supervisor is only part of the experience. The student has a faculty sponsor for the internship and an academic assignment for the student to complete.

Internships

Structured and supervised one-term work experience that usually lasts about three months, aligning with the semester

May be paid or unpaid

Is different from a short-term job or volunteer work in that it has an intentional “learning agenda” in a structured work environment

Includes learning objectives, observation, reflection, evaluation and assessment

Often includes a mentor from within the host organization

Study Abroad is“[e]ducation that occurs outside the participant’s home country. Besides study abroad, examples include such international experiences as work, volunteering, non-credit internships, and directed travel, as long as these programs are driven to a significant degree by learning goals.”

College-wide non-EU exchange programme:

•Since 2011/12 numbers have increased by 200%, with a 47% increase in 2014/15 alone.

•Newly implemented internal marketing plan and an improved curriculum mapping process.

•New summer school mobility programme: Creates mobility opportunities for students who cannot/do not wish to travel during the academic terms.

•Increased support for students on exchange: Provost’s Asian Travel Bursary and International Welcome Programme.

• Required year abroad for courses in European Studies, Business and a Language

• Consistently fewer outbound Erasmus students than there are incoming to Trinity. Leads to imbalanced exchanges, raising capacity issue.
