PEDRO’S PATTERNot a lot to report, I thought trials was a

winter sport but hey you've spent Sun-day mornings uner the duvet, approx twen-ty members rode the Dabber's trial on 2ndJan. 3 laps, 15 sections, 1 route. Quite en-terprising with 120 entry riding what yerbrung!! But it worked and was seeminglyenjoyed. Doug Theabold (get your tyres 'ere(not any longer I’m afraid - Ed.)), GaryEaves, clean all the way, young Daniel Cart-er had great rides for 1 as did PaulHoughton, Dave Godley 3, Greg Radley 4competitive as ever. Daniel's dad John hada turn when forks detached from frame, engineering fault by bike builder (not John)bruised chest, another bike 'appeared' andhe finished.Elsewhere the 'long - distance' trialers wentand enjoyed themselves Joe Stollery seem-ingly being star of the show maybe one of'them' can scribe a screed!!? John Ruthmakes regular sorties into Kent for normally'sensible' trials. I didn't make it to LittleBealings, understand it went well and wasenjoyed. Practice at Raydon produced somenew faces & machines including young JoeJacob's young brother now being nurturedby dad Brian, history being repeated? I wishhim well! Joe went to Aussie in November topursue his progressive speedway career, unfortunately broke a ankle 2nd time out,now able to get a boot on let's hope he staysrite way up when he's let loose again. Auto-jumbles have been occupying several mem-bers weekends seeking the elusive carb. orwheel together with the socialising andknowledge? swapping + burger eating!! Irecently read a article about the redoubta-ble Harold Taylor a name many of youyoungsters will not be familiar with, thisgentleman lost a leg at age 12 to blood poi-soning but pursued his motorcycling com-petitively duly selected for British I.S.D.Tteam in 1948, held in Italy. His outfit a1000cc Vincent (the super bike of the peri-od) and a Watsonian sidecar which wasclose hitched to ‘bike due to absent leg. AJohn Broadhead was engaged as 'passenger'(that title is a misnomer as anyone who haswill confirm) more so with Harold's limita-tion. The outfit was well 'sorted', all wheelsbeing q/d and interchangeable dual sprock-

ets as the outfit was driven to & from theevent, sidecar had passenger operatedbrake and Harold had both rear brake &gear lever on right hand side. Dunlops cameup with tyres that supposedly could be fit-ted by hand due to supple sidewalls (not myexperience of 4ply 'universals' however!) atyre could be affected in 5mins, I guessteamwork and John came into his own. They ended the week with a 'bronze' one oftwo awarded to 'chairs'. As transport formy Matchless/J.A.P grass bike in 1957 Ihad 1927 B S A 770 cc V twin, scaffoldboard on sidecar chassis. This also had in-terchangeable wheels, my ride to work bikewas a 1949 350 Matchless it took threetimes as long to get wheels out compared toBSA, progress? However I digress, Harold &John in 1949 BSA offered them a SunbeamS7 & chair, no personal experience of thismodel, a neighbour had one at a later date, grey porridge!, however our formidable duowon a gold despite several drive shaft chang-es and wiping off their one and only footreston day 6! These few facts no doubt front alotta lotta of effort and ingenuity! Haroldwent on to become team manager for manyyears to national teams successfully aroundthe world. Very much a mainstay of ACUcompetition scene, much appreciated byteam members and supporters. Nearerhome our own Bob Drane has a article at-tributed to him in Trail magazine I have yetto read it but hope it does him proud! Manyof you will not be aware of the time and ef-fort Bob has spent protecting and promot-ing our sport effectively all his working lifeone way and another. He has for many re-cent years spent hours at county councilmeetings fighting 'our corner' on land rightsand usage and many enjoyable hours havebeen spent by scores of trail riders follow-ing the feet - up, stand up figure manyhundreds of miles down Essex byways. Hisskills were honed piloting Bantam &Greeves machines in eastern centre trialsfrom the '60s he likes nothing more than amuddy rut!! Now piloting modern mountsand quietly enjoying the countryside andthe company, look afterhim! Ride careful useyour mirrors! Adios!

When I moved down toCambridge from Shropshire

with a young family in 1980 Ibrought my Triumph cub and C15engine with me as I hoped tocontinue riding in the flatlands ofEast Anglia. In those days theMotor Cycle News covered off roadsport, Venables had a columncalled The Sporting Scene and weall filled in official entry forms wellbefore the closing date. The worldwasn’t flat; we knew that, becausewe had had a continental and a fareastern invasion of motorcycleswhich finished off the Britishrubbish. For my part I was quite happyon the English rubbish and foundmyself the only rider in the Cam-bridge Matchless Club on a Britishbike and over the years I have most-ly kept going on them. KTM andYamaha enduro solos and sidecaroutfits have come and gone, theWelsh two day and the Powys arehappy memories, 30 years later I’mstill here and still find that a oneday trial gives me the most satisfac-tion and fun, circuit days at Mallo-ry and Cadwell were terrific, I triedspeedway at Kings Lynn for threeyears and would freely admit that Iwouldn’t have the nerve for thatnow. You can blame Norman Blake-more for this letter as I started rid-ing with the EFA in the early 80’sand enjoyed your trials immenselyas you were mostly on pre 65 fourstrokes and I had a ridged 500 BSAby then which I really got on with.

(That’s another story). Recently Isaw Norman on a Fantic at a trialand jokingly said that it onlyseemed like yesterday when he wasthe ace on an Ariel HT5. His reply,

“You do realise Guy, that was nearly30 years ago” made me think thatmaybe I was getting old but I’dheard some terrible stories aboutTiptree jam, what it could do to youif taken in excess, so I concludedthere was nothing wrong with meand Norman ought to change hismedication. And then in your Novembernewsletter Norman wrote telling ushow wonderful the good old dayswere when we all had steel tanks, square wheels and no ground clear-ance, the prince of darkness sup-plied our sparks and exhaust andcarburettor tuning was primitive tosay the least, but we didn’t knowany better so that was alright. I cansympathise with all this but we arestill here, some of us are cheatingon the pre 65 front (just like Millerin the early 60’s) and some of uswant to ride modern or even twostrokes which I am occasionallyguilty of. We all fit the latest tyre, decent electrics and it’s only a mat-ter of time before Norman offers‘Genuine rust effect gas filled com-pound sprung variably damped pre65 shock absorbers’. We can all livequite happily with that and just goout there and ride our bikes and inthat respect not much has reallychanged. What has changed is the differ-ence of ability between the best

rider on the best bike and the worstrider on the worst bike and how onearth are you to lay out a section tosuit everyone, that is a problemthat wont go away, non-stop, wonthelp much at club level, as Putter-ing Pedrosa remarked in the Janu-ary issue 50/50 is good (aren’t welucky to have a Honda works riderwriting for us) but it’s hard worklaying sections out to suit everyone. For the Brian Stonebridge TrophyTrial it takes me nearly threemonths to plan, get consent formssigned by landowners and do a 16mile route which is compatible withthe respective cropping on the 6different farms we visit and meetsall the latest cross compliance regu-lations thrown at us by those awful-ly nice people at Brussels. So far Iam part of a very competent teamplus Cambridge and Essex countycouncils and the police have beenvery co-operative it is very reward-ing to plan and take part in moderntrials be they Miller, Rickman or

any long distance event of a happyclub trial. My personal conclusion is thatI’m going to carry on riding trials, preferably on some old clunker of aBritish four stroke which has beenput together in the farm workshop(Puttering Pedrosa mentioned ascrap yard which is open to inter-pretation.) I will enjoy tackling sec-tions at whatever level I can man-age though I seem to have lost inter-est in the results by the time theycome out. I will also try to thankeveryone as I go but I get into somedire straits at times so forgive me ifI forget. Without wishing to offendanyone out there I don’t see anyreason to change my attitude and Iremain grateful to the sport and itssupporters and contributors fromthe highest to the lowest level. If you end up reading this thenyou should also feel sorry for youeditor who must be hard up for acopy.

For the past few months the oldman has been hoarding, beaver-

ing and tinkering away in his shedat Halstead, slowly but surely amodified Crusader frame has been‘cut and shut’ to accept a 500 Nor-ton Alloy motor and gearbox. Home-made Magnesium fork yokes,Enfield Alloy hubs and more recent-ly an alloy speedway clutch, all ofthese bits and pieces have beenfound, adapted, drilled and light-ened to keep engine and gearbox asnarrow as possible. Just before Christmas I had anexcited phone call from the oldman who having recently startedthis machine – minus an exhaust, petrol tank, mudguards and seat –thought it a good idea to ascertainthe weight of it, telling me excitedly

“she’s about 205 pounds within alittle.” Having shown interest allthrough this project I have becomeaware that I’m steadily going greenwith envy! So much so that ondowning the receiver I straightaway weighed my own machinewhich was 245 pounds. Spent Christmas with family atHalstead and after a couple of daysof festive jollities it was ‘shed’ time. Now having time to study this ma-chine I was practically ‘green to thegills’. “Shall we start her up?” saidthe old man, so with a lawnmowerpetrol tank and an old Monobloccarb he swung her over, two kicksand ‘Ahoy Ahoy’ she lives andbreathes. Checking that the oil wascirculating and no leaks on the

homemade Ali oil tank, suddenlyDisaster! The oil return pipe hadspat itself off, therefore oil wasgushing everywhere. ‘Whoo up!’valve lifter into action – ‘What thebloody ‘ells the matter here?” “Passthat big screwdriver Boy I’ll tightenher right up!”... So kicked overagain with some carburettor adjust-ment, managing a reasonable tickover and ‘Whoa’ more oil decora-tion… now spat off the other end! That’s them poxy Jubilee clips.Bloody ole pattern things ain’tworth a ****! Screwdriver back intoaction. “They won’t come off again”he said with confidence. ThankChrist for that I thought as a poolof oil was making its way towardsmy new Christmas slippers!! This time with a more leisurelykick she once again burst into life, ticking over with a nice sharp crackoff the pilot then once again the oilpipe decided to do its ‘Hissing Sid’impression and flew off “Christthat’s some oil pump you’ve got inthere Dad!” “I can’t make it out Son”

“Perhaps the unions are too small –you sure you haven’t over filled theoil tank?” “Course I ain’t”. Then oncloser inspection realised that theoil return and feed pipes were differ-ent colours one with black oil andone clear – “You sure you got themthe right way round Dad?” “CourseI’ave what do you think I am, a Wal-ly?” So taking off the return oil pipeand undoing the oil tank cap, start-ed her up so that the pipe was re-

turning straight into the top of theoil tank, then after running for acouple of minutes both pipesturned black – “Ahh” sighed the oldman, who then cut the engine –

“Silly old bugger – know what I’vedone don’t ya…!” “No Dad what’sthat?” I replied innocently. On pick-ing up long screw driver and pok-ing it down the return union ontank a ‘dink dink’ noise was heard –

“I haven’t drilled the bloody thingout- no wonder she kept spittingthe pipes off – silly old fool!” Think-ing to myself intelligence is no bar-rier to stupidity I asked him if thisepisode was to remain safely withinthe workshop walls or broadcasted –

“Tell who you bloody well like” wasthe reply. So I say to all others riders withaged fathers (Eaves, Fletchler, Can-ham, Gibb etc.) if you happen to befollowing the old mans scientificengineering wizardry and some-thing like this happens put pen to

paper leaving no detail unturnedand send it to Chris for perpetuity!

A.G.MThe EFA/ACTC 2012 AGM will be held at “The Alma” next

club night, the 6th March.Proceedings will start when Chairman Ted is ready.

A buffet will be laid on as an encouragement to attend. The AGM is usually one of the best, if not the best, attended club

night of the year. The majority of clubs of whatever disciplinemust be envious of our AGM attendances - is it perhaps the way

the Revolutionary Council is constructed? So, if you want a plateful of food, to collect one of our awards, orjust to see and heckle the winner of the ‘Po’ then “The Alma” is

the place to be on the 6th March.See you there!

one of our members who is aretired trials rider, moto

crosser and sidecar passenger, decided to join his fellow Thurs-day trail riders and fill up withShell V-Power fuel. Not for thehigher octane but because of thereduced ethanol content. The bikedidn’t quite run as well as expect-ed and after a stoppage no matterhow much kicking and pushingthe poor old bike was subjected toit wouldn’t start at all - not even asplutter. A check of the tank re-vealed all. It was V-Power all right,- V-power DIESEL!! And his name?Mr Jim Patey.
