PEDRO’S PATTERSunday bright (well maybe some
were) and early our scramblingmembers assembled at Maylandsea for012 first meeting, a improved coursethanks to Greg Radley and associate'swork with a 'machine' (not a Greeves) .Weather good, Scott Hayworth Euro-pean champ. was very smoothly andquickly a class act, Sam Appleton wasvery much with it along with Greg onthe Mettise 'Starmaker', Luke Fitzjohnwas debuting his 650 Mettise (mansmachine) dad Keith will have to scratchto keep pace! Good to see Chris Huxta-ble out of retirement and enjoying theday, Jim Patey & wife were startingthem in proper manner, whilst RayHumm acted as steward, actually Ithink he was a steward! The previous afternoon Terry Sewell rana trial which sadly was very unsup-ported (why does he bother, don't youwant trials??) answers on a £20 note. The odd 20 enjoyed a good selection ofsections with Gary Baker showing whata well ridden Cub can do on 3, 'Big'Paul Nash, (Beta) 4 Ray (laughing boy)Humm 6, Gary Eaves, Sam Appleton. On the White route Geoff (uncle) Challis9 showed Terry S 12 & Chris Chapman13 how to do it. Smiler alias Jim Shep-herd 15 and EFA's newest recruitStephen Webb next up on 20 in his 2ndtrial. I would suggest the enthusiastsamong you note this for 013!Sadlly the week after Easter Terry hadhis van stolen with his Greeves andcommercial stock, van and some stockhave been recovered, no Villiers sparesor Greeves! Please keep eyes, earstuned for Greeves Anglian.Raydon practice had minimal support?? 10 bodies had it to themselves andall enjoyed a pleasant afternoon. The Roger Birch trial, I think he wouldhave enjoyed it, Ted, Brian ,Mark, Dave,Colin laid on some testing 'mucky' sec-
tions which brought some down toearth, the front runners have to be con-gratulated, young Daniel has soon cometo terms with sponsors (mum & dad)latest Villiers engined mount I hope heappreciates the parental input! Our 'ed'Chris Canham excelled himself on thepopular 50/50 just ahead of 'on form'Alan and John as on the white routesome very different scores I witnessedsome valiant efforts, young George Stew-ard seemed completely unfazed whenhe 'shot' through my section why hedidn't complete?, don't know perhapshe had to get home to watch jackanory!!Arrangements are being made for'Specsavers' to attend our next trial freeeye tests for ‘white routers' this deemednecessary after many seemed incapableof 'reading’ sections! Are minders per-missible? or carers! The two ChelmsfordCity riders on the twinshock red routeare reviewing their future, one is consid-ering grass track!! 'Sidge' showed he'sstill capable of negotiating muddy slots, keep at it young man!! Many thanks toall the observers on a cold but dry dayand ever efficient sec. of meeting JuneKent results were again produced 'justlike that' thanks all! Some of you may have missed StevePage our sprinting twin shock rider hesuffered a heart attack in the week pre-vious now out of hospital after some'tuning'' seemingly going in a positivemanner . All the best Steve make hasteslowly!Good to see our president in betterhealth I'll warn you when he considers'saddling up' again and you can then gothe other way!
Be lucky!

I grew up in South West Dorset 8miles from the coast, half way
along the Jurassic coastline whichis a 95 mile World Heritage site ofrock and soil formations from 250to 65 million years ago, completewith fossils recording ice age, desert, submerged and mountain-ous periods of its evolution duringthat period. This has no bearingupon my choice of motorcycle noron my prehistoric riding style Iwould like recorded before someonesuggests such a thing!
To move on 65 million and a bityears, in 1964 I bought a £5 350ccAriel WNG from Harry Richards, our local scrap man. Got the localgarage to weld two vertical pieces ofangle iron in-between the rigid rearwheel triangulations so I could boltsome footrests on further back, fitted some scrambles bars back tofront and laid back nearly horizon-tal so I could reach them and I wasready. Before long a knobbly wasfitted on the back and a 21 inchfront wheel was added togetherwith a sort of front mudguard. Afew trials were managed but notvery well and as I had joined theYeo Vale club I was invited to entertheir novice and beginners trail. What was more, my local hero IvanRose, was prepared to lend me hisAriel HT5 for the event. This bikewas famous for Ivan’s incrediblemodifications which also infamous-ly increased its weight considerablybut did not set a trend. To every-
one's amazement, not least my own,I won the event and duly went tothe annual presentation dinner.
“Harold Taylor would be there tospeak and give out the prizes” theysaid in awe. I was privileged tomeet such a man who was a goldmedal ISDT sidecar man, teammanager, big in the ACU and an allround sporting god. Expectationwas high, I was introduced to JohnPoate the local star (he died quiteyoung I remember and was sadlymissed) and was awarded the FredWells trophy (a giant wooden shieldcarved by a German POW whostayed on after the war) by this onelegged, medium statured man withglasses and a trilby hat and quitethe largest, most heavy duty crutchI had ever seen (Long John Silverwould have been green with envy)but no parrot. He was wonderfullykind to me asking lots of questionsand showing a knowledgeable en-thusiasm which was impressive.Learning later of his exploits I nowrealise he probably used his crutchto lever his Vincent out of sectionsand to get it up in the air to changewheels and so forth. What a manand what a formidable crutch.
Moving on a few years and stayingin the south we had Triss and Bry-an Sharp, Badger Goss, Lew Coffin,The Rickman brothers and morerecently Sammy Miller, to name afew, move down here. So I considermy fondness for where I grew up
HAROLD TAYLOR REMEMBERED& PEDRO’S PATTER ‘12
well represented in motorcycle his-tory.
Moving to the present and nearerhome I have been saddened to readthat Dave Blanchard plans to re-duce his written contributions tolocal and national magazines inorder to keep more bikes runningand ride them more often. For mypart I wish I had had less bikes, spent less time in the workshopand ridden bikes less often. So Isympathise with him and wish himwell, he will be missed. We shallhave to rely on that eagle eyed ob-server ‘Snoozing Lord Pedro’ for hiscontinued effervescences and trynot to offend him in the future.
P.S. To my amazement the AprilSporting Motorcyclist has just ar-
rived and contains a letter fromIvan Rose who lent me his Ariel 47years ago with a history of the Brid-port MCC which was our local cluband in competition with the YeoVale club. Ivan was a member ofthe Yeo Vale Club which explainswhy I was too and was actually aSomerset club if I remember cor-rectly. What memories. But theycan all go back in the cupboard asfar as I’m concerned then I can getmy bike out again and go and makesome more memoranda. Hooray.
Still putting my foot in the past andpossibly putting my foot down inthe future.

“Rode in the Snaque Pit trial but I didn’t finish. Had to retire with apuncture, haven’t had a puncture in the last ten years until this event. And the reason? I saw Lord Preedy lounging in his deck chair half wayround section one and decided to run over his toes. He just got his feet
out in time and then in the very next section I got a puncture! So a certainamount of fate there - mustn’t mess with the President!”
Guy Stanley
Overheard at a trial.A disgruntled rider having been docked a few more marks than he
thought he should have been disputed it with the observer, the observernot giving an inch. The rider was heard to say – “if I had a son who was
an idiot I’d let him be an observer” to which the observer promptlyreplied “Very probably sir but I see that your father was of a
different mind!”
