TIPS TO PREVENT WINTER
HOUSEHOLD HEATING FIRES
(NewsUSA) - Dont let the questto keep warm this winter turn intoa re-safety hazard. With winteryweather and chilly temperaturescome increased risks within thehome. Follow these precautionsnow so your heated home andfamily can secure warm feelings
f safety while keeping winter
hills out.
Use heating equipmentroperly. In 2008, heatingquipment was responsible for an
estimated 66,100 reported U.S.home structure res. These rescaused $1.1 billion in propertydamage. According to the U.S.Fire Administration, many of theseres were a result of improper use of heating equipment. Followall safety instructions provided bythe manufacturer.
* Avoid clutter around space
heaters. What may at times mayseem like a harmless heatingdevice, space heaters can quicklybecome a mountain of potentialrisk as home clutter accumulatesaround and on top of them. Taketime to make sure all clutter is clear of any heaters in the house. Keepheaters at least three feet awayfrom paper, bedding, furnitureand other potentially ammablehousehold items.
* Use heating equipment that hasthe label of a recognized testinglaboratory. If you dont recognizethe testing laboratory, have a
qualied technician check to seethat the unit has been properlyinstalled.
* Look for new safer heater models. Supplemental zoneheaters, like those from Sunheat(www.sunheat.com), are idealfor homes that put safety rst.Sunheat heaters have been testedand proven unable to start a rewhile effectively using infraredheat to warm 800 to 1,000 squarefeet. They produce no harmfulemissions and are safe aroundchildren and pets.
* Install gas-fueled heatingdevices with proper attention toventilation. If unvented gas spaceheaters are used in bedrooms or bathrooms, make sure they aresmall and well-mounted. NationalFire Prevention Association codesprohibit use of liqueed petroleumgas heaters with self-containedfuel supplies.
* Inspect solid-fueled heatingsources. Have all wood and coalstoves, replaces, chimneys, chimney connectors and all other solid-fueled heating equipmentinspected annually by a technician.Have them cleaned as often as atechnician proposes.
* Test safety-alert devices. Testsmoke detectors monthly andinstall and maintain a carbonmonoxide alarm in a centrallocation outside each sleepingarea.
COMPANIES SEEK HAPPYEMPLOYEES
(NewsUSA) - Todays economyisnt just frustrating for thosewithout jobs -; limited budgetscan do a number on employedworkers morale as well.Exemplary employees might notbe awarded with raises, no matter how much effort they put intotheir projects. Employers unable
to afford larger salaries may seetheir best employees lookingelsewhere.
But some companies are ndingway to keep employees happyby cultivating employee-friendlyofce cultures. For example, in thefall of 2010, Washington, D.C.sOfce of the Chief TechnologyOfcer implemented a ResultsOnly Work Policy (ROWE), whichpays employees for results, notthe hours that they work. Thismeans that employees are ableto work when or wherever theywant, so long as their work gets
done. In places where it has beentried, ROWE not only boostsmorale and retention, but alsoimproves output.
Of course, not every companyis willing to redo its entire workstructure. That doesnt mean thatthey cant nd less drastic waysto boost morale. Here are someof the many ways that companiescan make the workplace moreattractive for employees:
* Acknowledge employeescontributions. Employees whowork hard without recognitionare likely to lose morale. Even if a company cant provide raises, managers can give out certicatesor plaques acknowledging anemployees accomplishmentsor designating an employee of the month. Plaquemaker Plus,a company that offers manypersonalized trophies, plaques andframes, offers laser-engraved and
full-color plaques that can be usedto give hard-working employees aboost. Visit their website at www.PlaquemakerPlus.com or call1-800-367-5556.
* Celebrate birthdays. Acknowledging employeespersonal lives will make them feellike valuable team members, rather than replaceable automatons.
* Communicate. Unhappyemployees are less productive,so managers should take time tospeak with them about questionsor concerns. An anonymousemployee survey can also helpemployers determine where theyneed improvement.
TALKING CENTS WITH YOURFAMILY
(NewsUSA) - As the dismaleconomy shrinks the job force, parents across the country arefaced with the intimidating taskof explaining nancial troubles to
their children.
The economic meltdown hasraised the unemployment poolin the United States to morethan 7.2 million, according tothe Bureau of Labor Statistics.
As these numbers continue toincrease, more parents will haveto explain fewer nights out, smalleallowances and other cuts to thefamily budget to their children. While the initial discussion canbe frightening, experts say thatavoiding these conversations withyour children is a mistake.
Keeping kids in the dark aboutsomething so serious as a joblayoff is a huge mistake. Hearingsuch an immensely personalfamily problem from anyone othethan you could well break downthe trust between you and youchild, says Dr. Michele Borba, child expert and member of Boys& Girls Clubs of Americas FamilyPLUS Advisory Committee, acomprehensive family suppor strategy sponsored by KimberlyClark Corporation.
So, how can parents start aconversation about a recenlayoff?
Borba, who also authored ThBig Book of Parenting Solutions, offers a few tips to help parents andkids discuss nancial problems:
* Prepare what you want to say.Doing so will help you feel morecomfortable and less tense, which
will make your news sound lessscary to your kids.
* Describe the potential impacon your family. Most kids primconcern is how this personallyaffects them. So, be honest andclear about any foreseeablchanges. For instance: Dining ouless. Not going to movies. Mor bag lunches. Less allowance.
* Explain your plan for newemployment. Kids dont needlengthy discussion, so just brieyexplain that youre seeking a new
job and that it may take awhile.Knowing that you have a plan(even if you have no idea what tdo) helps kids feel secure.
* Involve your kids so they feelthey are part of the solution.
Ask them for ideas to help youfamily reduce costs. For instance, mention that turning off the lightswill conserve energy. Then ask
them for other suggestions.
* Keep the discussion going.

DO GREEN PRODUCTS WORK? ARE
THEY COST-EFFECTIVE?
(NewsUSA) - Todays consumersappreciate businesses with asense of social responsibility, butbeing a good global citizen whilemaintaining a positive customer
environment and keeping costsdown can be a challenge. Somebusinesses are rising to thechallenge by starting recyclingprograms and installing energy-efcient light bulbs, but thinkthat further initiatives will be toocomplicated to implement. A greencleaning program, can, however, meet any business criteria for performance and cost.
Performance
If a product doesnt work, it doesnt
matter that it is earth-friendlyor affordable. Companies cango to their distributors, who willusually provide sample products.Companies can then test theproducts in as many scenariosas possible. Tests should takeweather into consideration. For example, businesses located inregions that experience heavyrain or snow all winter may notchoose the best product if theytest in dry, summery conditions.
Most product lines include highlyeffective products as well asothers that dont work as well.Since its pragmatic to order allproducts from a single brand,
businesses should match their most important cleaning needs tothe best products in the line. For example, a jewelry retailer musthave crystal-clear display casesto showcase their products, sopriority should be given to aline with a highly effective glasscleaner.
Green
Evaluating the green claimsof cleaning products can alsobe difcult. Several national
organizations certify productsas green, however each usesdifferent criteria and specications, based on proprietary denitionsand internal reviews. Onedesignation, DfE (Design for theEnvironment), is approved bythe US Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). DfE-certiedproducts must meet rigorousstandards for biodegradabilityand toxicity, health hazards, storage and shipping limitations, ammability, etc.
Companies also need to consider how products are packaged.Pre-measured packaging, for example, can contribute to a
green initiative, as it creates lesswaste. Shipping and storagesavings can be signicant also.Products manufactured by Pak-It, LLC, a subsidiary of JBI, Inc(OTC-QX: JBII - News), come inwater-soluble packets. Becausetheyre just packets of cleaningconcentrate and arent mixed withwater, there is less weight to shipand space-saving storage.
Cost-Effective
The cost of cleaning products
should be evaluated on a totacost of ownership basis sincso many factors contribute tthe overall goal of a clean retaienvironment. Businesses camake an estimate by choosinone location and determininhow much money it would costo keep it clean for one year witeach product in considerationincluding storage costs, labor ansupplies.
One size does not t all when icomes to cleaning, especiallfor multi-location retailersConsideration should be giveto seasonal changes in cleaninneeds as well as those base
on general geographic locationNational multi-location retailer can generalize by classifyinstores in zones and considerinthe unique needs of each zone tensure that the cleaning prograis effective. By calculating thcost on an annual basis, anseasonal impacts will be takeinto consideration.
