• Why did the election of

Lincoln cause succession? Because the south was aware of Lincoln wanting slavery to be banned from the new territories and states. And the south THOUGHT he would abolish slavery in all the current states.

• Fort Sumter was the “start” of the civil war. As it was conquered/crushed by the south due to Fort Sumter being on Confederate soil.

• Also, known as the Battle of Sharpsburg. The Union army was following Confederate, Robert E. Lee’s army into Maryland. Union army General George B. McClellan launched an attack against Lee’s army. Despite McClellan’s superiority in numbers, his attempts had failed allowing Lee to counter by shifting his forces along interior lines to meet each and every challenge along the way.

• It declared the freedom of all slaves in any state of the Confederate States of America that did not return to Union

control by Jan. 1st 1863.

• The turning point in the civil war. Fought in

and around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The union wins! At the end Lincoln gave a famous 2-3 minute speech known as the Gettysburg Address.

• Written by Abe Lincoln ripped off of many

speeches before. It was about 2-3 minutes long and talking mainly about the Battle of Gettysburg. He wrote it on a train.

• Robert E Lee (Confederate forces) surrendered to

Ulysses Grant (Union forces) finally after passing letters between the two leaders and decided where to meet to discuss agreements.

• The 13th Amendment officially abolished slavery and continues to prohibit slavery today. It was added to the constitution on December 6th, 1865.

• The 14th Amendment provided ALL people born in the united states life, life, and property without due process.

• The 15th Amendment prohibits any government official from denying a voter based on race, color, or previous servitude.

Lincoln’s view of Reconstruction

• Lincoln wanted to readmit the south instead of punishing them for seceding.

• Andrew Johnson’s approach to reconstruction, was a bit different from Lincoln’s, as he wanted all rebellions to pay for seceding for the union.

• They established harsh policies toward slavery and confederacy during the civil war. They liked Andrew Johnson’s approach to reconstruction at first.

• When the war ended all was still not well in the south as former slaves were treated differently then regular people. Meanwhile, places had to be rebuilt as they were destroyed during the civil war.

• Booming with industries! Not much rebuilding up north because the war was mostly fought in the south.

• One of the tightest, disputed, and most

intense elections of all time. Democrats and Republicans started making a deal in secret, this deal was known as the Compromise of 1877. This deal would make Hayes president of the United States.

• Democrats agreed to make Rutherford Hayes president

if the republicans agreed to the following: • To withdraw federal soldiers from their remaining

positions in the South • To enact federal legislation that would spur

industrialization in the South. • To appoint Democrats to patronage positions in the

South. • To appoint a Democrat to the President’s Cabinet.. • To the slaves in the south this deal was known to them

as “The Great Betrayal”. Republican efforts to assure civil right to blacks had been abandoned.

• Jim Crow era began from segregation (or what the north

called “equality”). Every bathroom, restaurant, shop, library, and any other place to go besides home had a “Whites Only” or “Color Only”. Racism began with the Jim Crow Era. Fights would break out, names would be called, hate would rise.

• On June 7th, 1892 Homer Plessy got on a white car but

was rejected even though he was 7/8 white and 1/8 black. He was told to go get onto the “color” car but he refused to leave the white car and was later arrested and put in jail. He went to court but was rejected again

and again and brought his case all the way up to the United States Supreme Court. Plessy was

turned down by the Supreme Court by hearing that the court thought Louisiana did not violate any of the amendments.
