BULBOCODIUMS
Quen Dor 10Y-Y
Tall, hardy and big, but still miniature, this is one of the most
impressive bulbocodiums here. Early spring.
$8/bulb
Nug Nutsch 10Y-W
This is the best of the reverse bicolors
and isalso a good parent of reverses.
Winter flowering.
$10/bulb
Immersh 10Y-Y
This is a short stemmed variety with great substance and,
for a bulbocodium, very broad petals. Pale yellow; not quite
white.
Early spring flowering, just a bit later than Quen Dor here.
$10/bulb

Nedth 10Y-Y
A hardy winter flowering yellow.
$10/bulb
Dwish 10Y_Y
This is an extremely vigorous mid-winter flowering
yellow bulbocodium.
$10/bulb
Gwella Gwair
This is a wonderful mid-winter
yellow bulbocodium.

Winter Colors
‘Winter Colors’ names a population
of winter flowering bulbocodiums in
the same way that ‘Autumn Colors’
names a population of Bill Welch’s
autumn flowering tazettas.
Here they are shown flowering mid-
winter in an open paddock near Yass.
Bulbocodiums are the most frost
hardy of the winter flowering
daffodils.
$2/bulb
INTERSECTIONAL BULBOCODIUM HYBRIDS
Gold Step Alfriston x bulbocodium 10Y-Y
This is an astonishingly
vigorous inter-sectional
bulbocodium hybrid that has
proven itself to be a parent of
vigorous seedlings. Its
classification as division 10 is
correct I think (by comparison
traditional division 5’s do not
look like triandrus). It is a small
daffodil but is NOT technically
a miniature.
$15/bulb; 3 for $30; 5 for $40
Gold Stride 10_04MB = Gold Step selfed? 10Y-Y
This has been released for breeding purposes only. Just a
few available.
Gold Step has given a number of partially fertile seedlings,
presumably through selfing, but this is the only one that is
fully fertile.
Gold Stride survives but it is not wildly vigorous in the way
that Gold Step is. It can produce a lot of seed. There are
hints that it may give a higher percentage of seedlings with
some fertility when crossed with main division flowers, a
type of cross that can give very nice intermediates.
$60/bulb

Steplings grex of Gold Step seedlings 10Y-Y
The seedlings are like Gold Step but are
sterile or nearly so. They are too good to
just throw away.

JONQUILS
N. viridiflorus
This is a green
autumn flowering
species.
2 bulbs, one of
each, for $20

JONQUILS: - VIRIDIFLORUS HYBRIDS
Viriquilla 03_01MJ = Limequilla x Emerald Sea 7W-Y
Bred with pollen generously sent by John
Hunter from New Zealand this flower has
superb form and vigour. It has only a slight
green cast from viridiflorus but it should be
valuable for breeding green flowers. It is fertile
and winter flowering but appreciates protection
from frost.
$15/bulb
Viriverse 07_03MJ = Hillstar x Emerald Sea 7YYW-Y
Also from John Hunter pollen this flower has good
form and vigour. Like the other Viri's, this variety is
winter flowering, fertile, and needs some frost
protection. I grow them against the north wall of the
house. The scent of these hybrids is heavenly.
$15/bulb
Viristar 07_04MJ = Hillstar x Emerald Sea 7W-W
Also from John Hunter pollen, this flower has good
form and vigour but it is perhaps a little less tidy than
the other Viri's. It is winter flowering, has some
fertility, and needs some frost protection.
$15/bulb
All material is copyright to Lawrence Trevanion Back to Contents
Virivest 01_01MJ = Westholme x N. viridiflorus 7W-G
Bred directly from N. viridiflorus this
variety is neither as big nor as robust
as the other Viri’s. It flowers
autumn/early winter.
$20/bulb
Virition 07_06MJ [Hillstar x Quick Step] x Emerald Sea) 7W-W
Also from John Hunter pollen, this flower has more florets
And is more fertile than the other Viri's, but is slower to
increase. It is an excellent parent.
$40/bulb
Theogold 12_11MJ = Viriquilla x N. fernandesii 7Y-Y
This a small (but not miniature) vigorous jonquil hybrid. Winter
flowering. It’s first seedlings have flowered in their third year. It
seems certain to be a great parent.
$20/bulb
All material is copyright to Lawrence Trevanion Back to Contents
Theoquil 09_02MJ = Viriquilla x N. fernandesii 7W-Y
Theoquil became interesting because it parented a fully fertile jonquil
hybrid. It is still interesting because of its color but as a parent it
seems likely that Theogold will surpass it.
$20/bulb
Shatter Green 03_01J = N. fernandesii SS105 x N. viridiflorus 7G-G
A novel winter flowering miniature. It is probably 7Y-Y
but it is notable for the strong green cast it inherits from
its green pollen parent. Appears to have very little
fertility but might be worth trying in a warmer climate.
$30/bulb
10_03MJ Viriquilla x Virivest 7W-G
This is a tall robust viridiflorus hybrid that flowers early winter
here.
$30/bulb
All material is copyright to Lawrence Trevanion Back to Contents
14_01MJ Viriverse x Theoquil 7W/Y-Y
This is an outstandingly vigorous Viriverse seedling with very
good fertility. I’m not totally convinced this seedling is true to
cross.
$20/bulb
12_10MJ 07_2MJ x 03_19MJ 7Y-Y (~7G-G)
07_02MJ is (Hillstar x Quickstep) x Emerald Sea. 03_19MJ
is a poor yellow viridiflorus hybrid whose seedparent is
unknown -it was used for the sake of genetic diversity. This
seedling is a robust and fairly respectable result.
$30/bulb
10_62MJ Viriquilla x N. fernandesii 7Y-Y
This is a sibling of Theogold. It is larger than
Theogold, not as vigorous, and is not so good a
show flower. Like 10_45MJ it sets a new
standard for exhibition jonquils, in my opinion
because it has more of the multi-floreted
character of the best examples of the species. It
too has fertility but I have not yet selected any
seedlings from it.
$20/bulb

JONQUILS: - FERNANDESII HYBRIDS
Jolly Jumbuck 08_06MJ = Demmo x 02_02J (N. fernandesii) 7Y-O
This has turned out to be a nice exhibition
daffodil. It has slight fertility and may prove to
be a useful parent. The name was suggested by
Fermi de Sousa.
$15/bulb
10_45MJ Limequilla x 02_02J (N. fernandesii) 7W-W
Jonquilla is a notably a multi-headed species. In
my view, a good division 7 bred from it should
have many florets. Two is not enough! This
variety easily produces 6 florets, and although it
takes a little time to completely whiten, it sets a
new standard for exhibition jonquils. Hardy and
a good increaser, I expect this to be a marvel in
the hands of experienced exhibitors.
$20/bulb
All material is copyright to Lawrence Trevanion Back to Contents
09_12MJ N. fernandesii MS449 x Redlands Too 7Y-O
This has to be kept as part of a breeding collection so I assume
it is as good as its pedigree suggests and much better than the
photo.
$10/bulb
03_07MJ N. fernandesii MS449 x Mrs David Calvert 7Y-O
This flower was given a bad rap in the 2015-16
catalogue. It may be a more useful parent than first
appeared. Petals fade as the flower ages. Extremely
vigorous.
$10/bulb
14_15MJ 09_12MJ x 10_54MJ 7W-Y
09_12MJ is listed above.
10_54MJ is (Hillstar x Quick Step) op
This jonquil has nice contrast but appears to be sterile. Good
doer.
$10/bulb
All material is copyright to Lawrence Trevanion Back to Contents
MORE FERTILE JONQUIL HYBRIDS
06_06MJ Limequilla x (Hillstar x Gertrude Nethercote) 7YYW-W
This is a nice, intensely reversed, hardy, fertile jonquil.
$10/bulb
09_23MJ Limequilla x (Hillstar x Gertrude Nethercote) 7YYW-W
This is a sibling of 06_06MJ above. There is no good photo of it
but I use it for breeding so we can assume it is a good flower
similar to its sibling.
$10/bulb
13_42MJ 03_12MJ x 02_04MJ ~7W-P
13_03_12MJ is an orangey reversish Hillstar x Quickstep.
02_04MJ is Hillstar x Gertrude Nethercote.
This unusual and quite attractive peachy colored flower will
prove, I think, to be a nice vigorous floriferous garden
flower. The pedigree may actually be correct, which might
account for both the vigour and the reluctant fertility. It is a
pity it is not a more dependable seedparent. Just a few
available.

TAZQUILS
Yazscent 03_01JT = jonquilla x Soleil D’Or 8Y-Y
This flowers late winter or early spring. It is not an
exhibition flower and it sometimes has flowers lower in
the foliage than is ideal but it is vigorous, indestructible
and has the most pleasing of all daffodil scents.
$5/bulb
Autumn Jade 12_01TX = Taztep x Virivest 8W-G -> 8W-W
This flowers here in May if watered and in August if not. This was
a very good cross, but this selection is the earliest and the most
welcome. A nice vase flower but of no use for breeding.
$50/bulb
‘POETAZ’ TAZETTA
Nomatta 04_01MT = Cloth of Gold (artificial tetraploid) x Welch seedling 8Y-O
I assume the Bill Welch seedling is 95/1,
which I understand is Matador x [(Autumn
Sol x Ballymarlow) op]. This seedling
almost certainly has Matador-like genetics (2
x 10 + 2 x 7 = 34 chromosomes). It is
perhaps a bit low in the foliage and the
flowers are a bit wayward in the way that
Cloth of Gold is but it is vigorous and
sunproof and much more fertile than
Matador. The name is an allusion to
Matador.

WHITE TAZETTAS
Autumn Quartz 07_01W = paperwhite x N. broussonetii 8W-W
This is a very big paperwhite (from Bill Welch
seed) with a huge bulb, that, like its pollen parent,
reliably flowers in the autumn. For those who
don’t like the smell of paperwhites this one will be
a very pleasant surprise. The plant is sterile here
and the foliage is green rather than glaucous like a
true paperwhite.
$25/bulb
10_01W N. panizzianus 8/13W-W
This is a sublime little autumn/winter flowering
paperwhite. Survives frost but will benefit from
protection. (This is an op seedling of a plant grown from
seed from Michael Salmon.)
$20/bulb
10_07W N. panizzianus x N. dubius 8W-W
This is such an odd little paperwhite that I assume the pedigree is
correct. Winter flowering and will survive frost but will be much
happier and look much better with a bit of protection.

Tetraploid paperwhite 8W-W
This was grown from seed from Bill Welch. I have no doubt
it is tetraploid. Unfortunately, I can’t seed it in my climate. It
may be a reluctant parent.

GRAMON SERIES
Except for Gramonesque this series are from Taztep x Autumn Colors. Gramonesque and Autumn
Colors are from seed from the Californian Bill Welch.
The Gramons are big, robust, and carry large clumps of florets high above the foliage. As a group
they are scarcely believable and this is in Canberra where the climate doesn't suit them. This last
frosty winter they did very well on the west side of the house. They will do very much better in less
frosty conditions.
All are mid winter flowering but they can be forced with cool wet conditions or delayed by being
kept dry. An exhibitor could do very well with them.

Taztep 8W-Y
Taztep is vigorous but modest and not particularly distinct except that it
has proven itself a MUST HAVE seed and pollen parent for anyone
interested in breeding tazettas. It appears to be a perfectly fertile
tetraploid, two parts colored tazetta, two parts paperwhite.
$10/bulb; 3 for 20; 5 for $30

(A stray from Bill Welch 'Autumn Colors' seed -

COLORED TAZETTAS
- called ‘Jonquils’ by florists
First Stanza (N. elegans x Soleil D'Or) 8W-O
This is one of the most remarkable of all tazettas. It is one of
the very first daffodils to flower in the autumn, flowering
within weeks of a cool wet change - and can be forced to
flower even earlier by putting it in the shade and watering it. It
has scent that may be pleasant even to those who dislike
tazettas. It is outstandingly floriferous and an outstanding
increaser with almost every offset producing a stem of
flowers. It may prove to be one of the very few daffodils that
succeed on the coast. It is fully fertile for those interested in
daffodil breeding.
$10/bulb; 3 for $20; 5 for $30
Gold Stanza (N. elegans x Soleil D'Or) 8Y-O
A sibling to First Stanza this was the only yellow seedling
from the cross. It typically flowers a little earlier than First
Stanza. It is hardy here but does not increase as quickly as
First Stanza and doesn’t seem to be as good a parent.
$25/bulb
Tanz 10_04T = First Stanza x 05_01T 8W-O
05_01T is an Autumn Surprise sibling (N. tazetta subsp.
lacticolor x N. elegans). This is not miniature but it is an
exquisite intermediate between First Stanza and the (lacticolor
x elegans) miniatures with a cup that is closer to elegans. The
name is a small piece of ‘First Stanza’. Autumn flowering.
$40/bulb
All material is copyright to Lawrence Trevanion Back to Contents
Anza 10_02T = First Stanza x 05_01T 8W-O
This is from the same cross as Tanz. To my eye Tanz has more
striking lines but there is no doubt that Anza is a delightful
“intermediate”. (For non-specialists ‘intermediate’ is a
category that applies to divisions 1-4 and 11 and NOT 8.)
Anza may also not whiten as much as Tanz.
$20/bulb
Frills Bills 12_09T = 97_12T x 99_08T ?Y-O
97_12T is a nice 8Y-O Autumn Colors. 99_08T is a strange
frilly 8Y-Y Autumn Colors. This flower is hard to classify with
its strange splits and protrusions. A definite advance on 99_08T
I am using this flower in the hope of obtaining new forms,
which is looking not too hard because the characteristic is fairly
dominant. It is not especially vigorous but seems quite hardy.
Flowers here somewhere between April and June.
$40/bulb
Goldate 12_31T = ? 8Y-Y
This is an 8Y-Y that is almost of uniform color, which is something
of a treasure and a rarity here. It is a fertile diploid, probably with
Soleil D’Or as at least one parent. Vigorous and a good increaser.

13_01T is earlier and whiter than
First Stanza, possibly taller, but
not so orange. 13_02T is more
robust that Gold Stanza. This is a
great offering for growers who
want a longer daffodil season.

MAIN DIVISION
Cockatoo Dreaming 01_261 = Fragrant Rose x Decoy 2P-R
This plant’s first flower was vandalised by
cockatoos hence the name. It was selected anyway
because the wilting of the flower intensified the
pink in the perianth (which recommends removing
the perianth and letting it dry out a little as a way of
proving pink in the perianth). It is a good doer but
is not a winning exhibition flower. Mid-season

it one of the best of its kind. Flowers
have strong contrast and are very long
lasting. Mid season.
This variety belongs in the following
list because the bulbs have been box
grown and are smaller than usual.

PEDIGREE FLOWERS
The following list will be most interesting to connoisseurs of daffodil pedigrees.
Many crosses have been made with a view to further crosses and most involve
outbreeding, often radically so. Mirrabooka 2W-W x 01_157 (Gold Convention 2Y-
Y x Redlands Too 2Y-R) is a nice example. Interesting has been the retrieval of pink
after outcrossing with 2Y-O. Retrieving division 3 from crosses with divisions 1 and
2 is proving difficult.
The bulbs are most valued because of their hardiness in tough growing conditions.
They have been grown in polystyrene boxes and have done well in conditions that are
too difficult for most varieties.
The bulbs (in most cases) should flower but they are SMALL and undergrown.
GD - they have done well
VG - they have done very well.
Only a few of each variety are available.
Where color codes have been suggested L stands for light yellow and K for red-pink.
~ means approximately
-> means approaching
The photo is BELOW the pedigree.
