1 Before walking with his family, Isaiah Powell shakes Coach Michael Gimenez’s hand and thanks him for everything he had done for him. 2 Three-year player Owen Descheemaeker said, “Senior Night was kinda depressing because I knew I would not be playing in college.” 3 Walking with his mom Catherine, JT Derouen takes a picture for Senior Night. 4 Josh O’Neal walks beside his little sister Jelena. He said, “I felt nervous and sad because it was my last game.”

10 minutes with the team, 10 things to knowas told by girls’ varsity volleyball1 Every member played club volleyball during the o!-season at clubs like NCVC or Gold Cal.2 Despite popular belief, the girls did run during conditioning, such as running sprints two to three times a week. 3 Team dinners took place every Sunday during the regular season.4 Kalli Turner joined the team mid-season.5 As a Senior Night tradition, underclassmen made every senior their own poster.6 Macey Hayden received the MVP award.7 Every practice proceeding a game, coaches printed new stats to encourage improvement.8 Players used universal hand singles to communicate with each other on the court.9 Karrah Codero bounced the ball twice and spun it before every serve.10 Erika Holliday was the only senior to play at the varsity level all four years.

During a moment like this, I’m just focused on getting the ball

to the setter. I want to do pretty much whatever I can to make it easier on my team. I tell myself to stay focused and just apply basic techniques to make sure I keep my head in the game. Most of us play club volleyball, and that’s where we improve the most.”

! ESTELLA BASQUEZ (pictured at right)

! ERIKA HOLLIDAY (pictured above)

I was always part of the people planning Senior Night, and it was

kinda crazy finally being the senior while everyone else was planning. I think that if we listened to the coaches more, there would have been improvement within the team ... because at this age we think that we know more then they do, but they are coaching for a reason.”

DANCE TEAM’S SHINING STAR OFF THE FIELD

Players describe what it’s like to miss

part of the sports season due to injuries

Leila Trimble, daughter of Mr. Jim Trimble, the principal of Sunset Ranch Elementary, dances with the dance team. Trimble said

she aspires to be a dancer when she grows up, and the dance team members said they

loved having her energy at the games. “She is fun to be around and catches onto our chants

very quickly,” Carly Windham said. The team carried the energy from the sidelines to the field at halftime, dancing to a remix

of “Flawless” by Beyonce Knowles and choreographed by Gelline Guevarra.

“Wearing pink to raise awareness for breast cancer makes me feel amazing because my best friend’s mom had breast cancer and she survived, so I love showing my support and spreading awareness. As a team we not only wear pink bows, but also pink Nike Elites, in order to add something extra to our uniforms for the entire month of October. Linking arms to enter the field just shows how unified we are as a team.” ! MCKENNA SMITH

UNDEFEATED, AGAIN While freshman football players often talked about their streak of home wins beginning in their days as Mighty Mites in the Whitney Jr. Wildcats program, Coach Bret Hunter did not focus on their past statistics or accomplishments. “When they told me they have been undefeated for many years, I was more concerned with this season and what they would prove.” Hunter said. “It was a very strong working group, clearly knowledgable about the game of football and details. From a coaching perspective, having this team made coaching really fun because they can try new, different things.”

“We were selling cookies at the new Walmart. I have been a Girl Scout since the Daisy level when I was 5 years old. I wanted to join in order to get more involved in my community and the empowerment of young girls with my friends. When I was in kindergarten, all of my friends were creating a troop together, so I joined as well. My favorite part of Girl Scouts has been all of the service projects I have done with young girls aged 5-10. It’s so fun to teach them new skills and watch them enjoy learning so much. My troop’s overnight trips have always been fantastic, too. We have traveled and stayed in historic youth hotels, explored cities together, been camping, and over spring break, we are going on a cruise to Mexico. ” ! NATASHA SZOMBATHY

MASTER CLASSIn the teacher pod of the C building on March 10, Alexandria Castro, Kevin White and Gabbi Bertolozzi watch Mrs. Deborah Lane demonstrate in Art II. “We were watching a demo for our longboard project. I like challenging myself in Art II because there are things that I’m not confident with, but when I actually do those things, I feel proud about it,” Bertolozzi said. “My favorite part of being in art is being able to express my creativity and style. The only thing I don’t like is having to express myself in a certain way, not being allowed to go outside of the box and being limited,” Castro said.

“I prepared for tryouts by practicing with my club team and working out with Jacob Scott and Parker Stewart by doing some shooting practice and a little conditioning. My little brother and I also worked out for a few weeks before and ran an average of two miles each time we went out.”

! KYLE CALLISON

“The hardest part was our fitness test. We had to run two miles in 14 minutes and then do sprints after. It was a bit more challenging with the older guys; they push me more than the kids my own age. We had a lot more tryouts this year, some days we had more than one tryout.”

! JAKE ENSIGN ! GRAHAM BART

“I’ve never tried out for a high school team before, and it was very different from club. During club we only play games and we don’t run. But during high school we had to run two miles in 14 minutes and if you didn’t make it then you had to redo it then do bleachers and field sprints.”

Making the team takes longer than usual

With the summer heat blazing, boys’ varsity soccer try-outs began Aug. 11 and went until Aug. 15, lasting 16 hours.

“We were very focused on making sure that the varsity team was going to be very fit. We had to do fitness tests and we ran a lot. We had a lot of try-outs this year; it was everyday for five days, and a few of those days we had multiple try-outs a day,” Luis Higuera said. For his first varsity try-out, Elisha Burbridge said, “It was long and hard but still fun. I already had a lot of friends on the team, and the new guys I met were super welcoming. I felt like I fit right in.” Brandon Mullins said the extended length made a difference. “It was a little more difficult, but it was helpful to get everyone into shape for the season. Even in try-outs we were coming together well and we all worked as a team before our team was even set,” Mullins said.

16 HOURS

“Our warm-ups were new this year and the jacket was only $40. I like them because they look really professional and they’re warm.”

“I only use my shin guards for the high school season. They cost me about $10, and I really like them.”

“Over the summer, I trained with my other teammates at 7 in the morning. We are in a new division, so our first race was a lot harder than in the past.It made us train a lot harder, and we as a team decided to work a lot harder.”

SPENCER BILYEU

ONE OF A KIND TAKE IT FROM THE TOPFall athletes describe the start of their sports season

“I started conditioning by myself in February. I ran for an hour everyday from February until the end of summer. I also threw with the receiver all year to stay in shape. I felt really confident going into the season.”

VARSITY FOOTBALL

“At the first game, we ended up having a new member on the sidelines. Harley (pictured) was just a little girl who kept dancing along with us, and we thought it was adorable, so I went up and asked her and her mom if she wanted to come down to the sidelines with us.”

“Flying was very intimidating for me at first. You have to try to get the crowd involved and pumped up while also keeping your balance. When I’m cheering, I feel very respected and involved in my school and that’s what keeps me cheering.”

HUNTER RODRIGUES NICOLE FOSTER ELIZABETH WHITE

“My team tried to stop doing dryland stuff this year. Anytime we got out of the pool it was because we were in trouble, and we had to do push-ups and burpies. That happened like once every two weeks for us.”COLETON MEYER

WHAT’S IN YOUR BAG?Fall athletes share something they always keep in their athletic bag during the season

“Try-outs were a week long, and it’s always the hardest week of the year because we all are still trying to get back into shape for the level of play we need to be at. We mostly worked on our endurance in our speed and sprints.”

HALEY HILLIKER

“I always keep an ankle brace and athletic tape in my bag just in case anyone needs it.”

“Before every water polo practice and game I pull out sunblock from my bag and apply it.”

“I always have a mouth guard in my bag because I’m not allowed to play football without it.” KYLE CARR

“In my bag I always have a mini sewing kit just in case I have a problem with a costume.” HELIA AHMADZAI

“I have to have a pack of gum in my bag at all times. I can’t concentrate on playing without it.”

ELENA LEACH

“In the beginning of the season we had two rounds of nine holes to see who goes where in the lineup for our first scrimmages and match. The lineup is based on progress and your score.”

“The goal is the same as every year, which is to do our best and give in each game or practice setting to the fullest extent. Our whole team works really well together, and we all love playing as a team.”

“We start every practice with a 400-yard freestyle

swim. Then we practice ball handling, scrimmage and then

we end with a team cheer.” DYLAN LOEW-GARRELTS

“During the practices when we aren’t running 8 miles,

we run hills and other conditioning exercises.”

ANNIE HOLM

“Every week, I run on average about 35 miles. Other people

run more or less depending on their pace and ability.”

1 During try-outs, Kiana Brown talks to Emily Nguyen. “Everyone split up to warm up with a partner playing half court, volleying and serving up overheads,” Brown said. 2 On Aug. 11, Cailee King hits with her coach. “Girls who didn’t have their clearance slips weren’t really allowed to practice with us. They were supposed to leave, but since it’s a public court they just stayed on the opposite side and did yoga,” King said.
