E D ITO R ’ S N OTE

Hello and good day Brunei! December is finally here, and in its role as the final month of the year, is naturally accompanied by a level of anticipation and excitement for what 2018 may bring.

However, as I have come to learn in recent times, good things do not

come to those who wait, and therefore the ability to achieve our respective goals demands a certain level of proactivity and commitment from us all. It is with this fact in mind that the BHC team continues to seek out content that is relevant, interesting and innovative for our readership; and we are not the only ones seeking to push the standards of quality further.

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, a well-loved franchise in Brunei recently renovated their Centrepoint Hotel branch, catching many people by surprise by making

interesting improvements to an already lovely interior. The Paddington House of Pancakes in Berakas has incorporated All-Time Delights into its floor plan in response to feedback from the public – a sign of its commitment to their customer base. Even the brand new Roti Culture was designed entirely in-house by its founder, Wu Chun, who has succeeded in fusing both traditional and modern facets of life in Brunei.

This month we also paid a visit to a well-known figure in Brunei society where we learned about his incredible collection of antiques, as well as all the time, effort and resources invested into preserving them – and more interestingly, their accompanying stories and memories.

So as we approach the end of 2017 and prepare for the transition to a brand new year, we find ourselves looking forward to a better tomorrow, a better future – and you know what? It most certainly is within your grasp, so go out there and seize it! Happy holidays everyone!

If you feel l ike your home seems a l i t t le outdated, then you’re in luck ! A lot of old-f ashioned st yles are expec ted to make a big comeback in 20 18 . This could be the best news ever for anyone tr ying to keep their homes updated with the latest inter ior design trends . If you already have one of these trends in your home, you won’t need to wor r y about your space look ing passé anymore.

A V O C A D O G R E E N A N D

G O L DA popular trend from the 1970s that is making a

comeback. This pairing exudes nostalgia and is a reminder of the amazing times from the decade. Pairing

avocado green with a nice shade of gold creates a welcoming vibe with its calm and delicate accent.

Whether it be walls, curtains or even floors, when styled correctly, the colour can give a much-needed touch of

brightness to any home.

B R A S SThis trend may be considered outdated, but it made an appearance in 2016 and is expected to do so again in

2018. So to anyone who already has brass in their homes, rejoice in having trendy décor before it was considered

trendy! Even a simple brass piece can add a bright shine into the home with its lively yellow colour. Give your home touch of luxury by adding some brass décor.

Though the black and white pairing is timeless, it will be one of the top trends for 2018. This monochrome

combination may look vintage, but it actually reflects a sense of elegance and sophistication. Regardless of how

much time passes, it seems that these two colours will always be a classical blend. So if you are looking to add some class to any room, monochrome is the way to go.

A R T G A L L E R Y

W A L L SHanging too many pictures on the walls was once

considered clutter, but if you’re the type who loves to frame memories, 2018 is your year! Whether they are pictures of family and friends or original artwork, they

will give a nice accent to the wall. The picture frames pair perfectly with the design of any wall. For a quirky and

eclectic look, hang pictures in various shapes and sizes.

O V E R S I Z E D F U R N I T U R E

Big furniture is set to become BIG in 2018. Look to large sofas, rugs and more to give elegance and class to a home. Oversized furniture creates a stylishly antique atmosphere that is perfect for those who are fond of

classical themes. Having oversized furniture also helps to show a homeowner’s unique style on a larger scale.

At around 7. 3 0 pm on the night of Oc tober 14 , 20 17, the launching ceremony for the new S ungai Kebun Bridge began in ear nest – by being integrated into the nation’s urban landsc ape in an event involving a large r iver procession of f loat s, a major f irework s display, laser show, and immense levels of suppor t f rom the populace.

A major construction project that took some 3 years to complete, the new cable-stay bridge – which during the proceedings was renamed to Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha (RIPAS) Bridge in honour of Her Majesty – is not just a vital link between Sungai Kebun in the Muara District and Bandar Seri Begawan proper, but also happens to be the second longest single-pylon cable-stayed bridge in the world. It is always nice when the country earns some bragging rights, and this bridge, which was constructed with cement that was provided exclusively by Brunei Cement, and topped off with a golden dome symbolising the national faith, also stands proudly as the tallest structure in Brunei.

The ceremony was held in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee celebrations marking 50 years since the ascension of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to the throne. Welcomed by tens of thousands who braved endless traffic in order to count themselves among those wanting to witness a piece of history occur, people gathered at locales that included the Royal Wharf, the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Jetty Drop-Point, as well as the Eco Corridor.

Broadcast live via Radio Televisyen Brunei, thousands more were able to avoid high traffic levels by opting to watch the gathering from the comfort of their homes. Also, as can be expected in this day and age, a tremendous amount of photos pertaining to the ceremony were posted and shared on social media platforms, with some lucky shots even turning out tobe viral.

The bridge, which is equipped with dual carriageway lanes, as well as pedestrian walkways to either side of the lane has a road span of 300 metres, although the bridge superstructure itself is more than 600 metres in length. This project collaboration between Brunei’s Swee Sdn Bhd, and South Korea’s Daelim Industrial, tallied up at around $139 million. With more than 18,000 motorists travelling daily between Lumapas, its surrounding areas, and the capital, the bridge is expected to greatly ease up on traffic congestion in its

role as an alternate route. When you take into consideration that a good

portion of the population is fairly wide-spread, it becomes apparent just how important a role demographics plays in every aspect of the running of a country. Brunei as we are reminded through our own personal experiences time and time again, is a very close knit community that places so much emphasis on family values as the bedrock for a developed society. The RIPAS Bridge is a literal bridging of gaps between parts

of our community. Residents living in the areas of affect did have routes for getting to the capital prior to this, however, Brunei’s latest iconic landmark allows a greater ease of access and mobility for all our countrymen and women on both sides.

The very location itself is a form of tribute promoting a blend of the old and the new, with the RIPAS Bridge overlooking the Water Village of the East. A nice reminder of the government’s stride to push ever forward while never forgetting its roots and values.

Have you jumped on the f i tness bandwagon and reached that point where you need to st ar t mak ing s acr if ices to your diet but love chocolate, cook ies, cr isps and c ake too much? And have you noticed that all these sweet delec t ables st ar t with the s ame let ter? What is this sorcer y, evi l I tell you! But fear not, for these snack s (as enjoyable as they are) c an so easily be substituted by healthier alter natives – f r uit s and veget ables .

Now, we want to efficiently maximise the amount of nutrients our bodies can absorb from Mother Nature’s bounty, which means in this instance, blending our food sources into juice. I can already hear many among you moaning about my definition of ‘snack’ and while, admittedly, gradually phasing taste buds’ fantasies out of your diet is an exercise in discipline all its own, the benefits and pay-off – both short and long-term – are immense. In addition and contrary to popular belief, fruit and surprisingly, even vegetable juice, is really not that bad and is quite flavourful.

In support of this, BHC Magazine played host to the Art of Juicing 2 weeks ago – a 3-hour gathering of some 30 invited members of the public, who witnessed a demonstration that involved both theoretical explanations and a practical showcase on the benefits of juicing. Held at the Knowledge Hub building at the Anggerek Desa Technology Park in conjunction with the Raw Food Asia movement, which is being actively promoted by a Bruneian nutrition advocate, Mewsum Wong, guests were treated to an array of juices prepared right in front of them.

From watermelon, pineapple, apple and lemon,

to carrot, celery and ginger, and the many combinations imaginable; black shirt-clad staff were on hand to present attendees with juice and vegetable shots. A member of staff was also on hand to disassemble, clean and reassemble the blender after each juice was made – a process that was carried out in under 5 minutes each time, a testament again to the blender’s ease of use.

Mewsum Wong lauded the Raw Food Asia blender she utilised during her demonstration, explaining how simple it is to use the machines, while constantly relaying detailed and in-depth technical information on each fruit and vegetable at her disposal. How they benefit us physically and mentally. “Do you not feel energised?” Mewsum asks the audience exuberantly. This quickly became a repeated question as she succeeded in infecting her audience as the presentation continued.

Representing many walks of life, the event came to a close with a lucky draw dip that saw a lucky attendee win a recipe book covering the preparation of a healthy diet for growing children – because if you’re going to start anyone on a path to genuine healthy living, you’ve got to start young!

Never able to rest happy by sitting on their laurels, The Bodyshop seems to always feel the need to champion good causes in one way or another, and currently, its respective teams around the world are now set for their next campaign in conjunction with the upcoming festive season. So what have they got in store for us this time?

The 2017 Play for Peace Campaign has seen The Bodyshop up its game – literally – by presenting

customers with a unique and playful Christmas gift collection that encompasses a range of products. Featuring an enticing selection of facial masks, perfumes and fragrances, to shower gels, hand creams and body lotion, and more, these products have all been packaged in a manner that shines a festive spotlight on families and more specifically, children.

Packaged in eye-catching colours, the gift boxes and containers have been repurposed so that they

double up as fun excuse for children and parents to spend more time bonding with each other. Depending on the product set purchased, you could end up with packaging designed to be used as a 2018 calendar, a money box in the shape of a funky robot, vibrant tin containers in the shape of lips, feet and spheres. Some packages can be used as a paper fortune teller, while other box sets have mazes and other games incorporated into the design.

RIGHTA large and diverse array of a combination of products makes up the Christmas Collection on offer by The Body Shop this year. TOP-RIGHTThe packaging complements the festive season by incorporating fanciful patterning and even games intheir design.

FAR-RIGHTThe product combo available for men comes in a coolblue hue.

So while you are treating either yourself or someone special to a gift from The Body Shop, do so knowing full well that your action is making a difference in a child’s life. Carried out in collaboration with International Alert, this year’s peace project is targeting Lebanon in a mission to provide the children of that nation with a guaranteed space of safety. Referencing the example of Syrian refugee children, the Chief Executive Officer of International Alert, Harriet Lamb said “We provide a safe space for them to play, and be children again.” I don’t know about you guys but I’m sold, so don’t be shy and visit your nearest The Body Shop branch for more information on this honourable campaign.

Situated along Jalan Mulaut- L imau Manis – which coincident ally is a stretch of road playing host to quite a large number of hardware stores – is yet another store that may not st and out f rom it s industr y- k in f rom an ex ter nal physic al perspec tive, but cer t ainly does should you enter the premises while the general manager is roaming the aisles .

Going by the affectionate nicknames of ‘sister’ and ‘aunty’ by the 23 members of staff, Lilian is a bundle of charisma and energy who despite her small stature makes up for it with a powerful set of lungs. Yelling instructions and orders to tall and big burly men who often respond with soft replies of “Yes aunty” while wearing meek and timid smiles on their faces that appear close to breaking out in giggles, was admittedly, a fairly amusing sight to behold.

“We have workers from Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines”, Lilian informs us regarding the melting pot that is the Wee Aik Sdn

Bhd hardware store. “I have so many workers from the region, all with different personalities, so you have to be strong to manage them all, just like with a family”. This is an aspect of the business that the BHC team is convinced Lilian has mastered, as even we felt the need to ‘jump to it’ every time she yelled out an instruction at a passer-by engaged in a chore.

Specialising in the supply of raw materials and products imported from the usual suspects – neighbouring nations in the region – the store was founded in 1985 by a Singaporean couple who had spent the majority of their careers in the construction industry.

The store was rebranded in 1988 to its current namesake and a short 3 years later saw the arrival of Lilian who has been a powerful motivator for providing the best quality service possible ever since.

Acknowledging the level of competition in the area, the general manager said “It was not that bad at first”, but as time has passed by “more people started setting up hardware stores in this area”. When coupled with the economic downturn, they have felt quite a pinch but still intend to push on through.

The store targets contractors primarily as operations do not include carrying out installation works for customers but you do get the occasional ‘do-it-yourselfer’ stopping buy looking for odds and ends. The premises itself is neat and well organised, having been spread out across two buildings inclusive of a well-stocked storeroom. PVC piping, wooden planks, steel girders, paint cans stacked upon one another make up a fraction of the diverse inventory.

So the next time you find yourself in the neighbourhood on the hunt for construction materials, consider stopping by here. Not only is your patronage very much welcome, but you may even get an interesting conversation out of the trip. Determined to persevere, Aunty Lilian continues to roar out orders in the jovial way that she does, and it’s when you spot the twinkle in her eye that her boisterous and humorous approach to business and life becomes apparent.

A well-spoken and thoughtful individual, the current General Manager, Danny Liew, relates to the BHC team the contributions the business has made toward the family’s well-being. “I belong to the 3rd generation of family members running the store. My father opened the store a long time ago when this area was an empty lot, before any of these buildings were here. Brunei was very different back then and business was quite good. Then my brother-in-law took over after my father retired, to help keep the operation afloat.”

Having occupied this position for 6 years now following his brother-in-law’s retirement, Danny shares how he was involved in another career until the time came when he was asked to help keep the family business alive.

“You have to understand, this store has done so much more than just supply raw materials and construction products to the Brunei market for 40 years. This store is what made my family’s overseas education possible. So many members of my family have all been able to study abroad thanks to the revenue this store has generated.” So while every individual within the family pursuing their studies abroad validates the need for operations to continue, one has to also weigh the commitment and dedication that has been poured into the family business.

“My father was once a simple employee himself like so many of us. It was only when his supervisors observed his potential that he was able to rise through the ranks.” The next logistical step from his perspective was to open up shop in a familiar industry. Operations proceeded well and smoothly for a time. Recent history however has shown us the dangers of the economic downturn and its effects on the smaller-sized businesses dotting the nation.

The following decades since its founding has seen the Gadong area undergo a transformation into a more vibrant commercial business district, and guilty by default of this natural progression; the emergence of several other stores looking to complement the burgeoning construction industry at that time. “We are not a very big store, but we do have a lot of experience,” which is one of the many considerations that the loyal customer base take into account when choosing to source their wares.

Specialising mainly in paint and PVC piping, many brands – some renowned, others obscure – take up a large portion of the inventory space along with an industrial paint mixer and catalogues galore. Coincidentally, I also happened to be searching the market for litres of paint in the double digits. This provided Danny the opportunity to describe in depth the various brands he had available, the correct technique for application depending on what is already covering a surface, as well as the importance of knowing the difference between undercoats, layers and glossy finishes.

This man definitely knows his stuff, so if you fall under the denomination of a person who insists on sourcing products from worthwhile sources – Soon Hong Hardware qualifies, but you know how this goes, don’t take my word for it and check it out yourself.

Along the stretch of Jalan Tutong l ies a home that in the opinion of the BHC team, could easily be considered as a mini museum, with an occupant whose personal interest and hobby in l i fe t ies in to his f ield of specialt y. The need to collec t i tems of par t icular interest to ourselves is an inner most dr ive that leads many, out of sheer cur iosit y or interest, to amass a sizeable collec t ion over the years . Unless managed properly there is great potential for things to get out of hand quickly. This is not the case with our fellow countryman, Haji Mohd Rozan bin Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yunos, the former Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, who has invested a considerable amount of time and effort saving the tangible aspects of Malay culture and history. A numerous and diverse selection of antiques, occupy a considerable portion of the living room in which many a guest has been entertained to no small end. And why would they not be? As the BHC team came to learn, with so many individual items possessing unique stories of their own, each with their own elements of mystery, humour or drama

attached to them, many an interesting conversation followed suit. Keep in mind that on average, these antiques range between 200 to 2,000 years old!

When asked if he considered himself a historian, an anthropologist or a curator, the beginnings of a wide grin materialise on his features. “Well, a little of everything I suppose. The skill-sets are interchangeable”, Rozan points out before delving into in-depth descriptions of some of the more notable items on display.

FAR LEFTA lot of cabinets have been cleverly utilised to act as impromptu room dividers, splitting the living room into sections. LEFTThe front door collection comprises traditional equipment for catching fish, grinding rice grains, and more.

“You see this pot”, he begins, gesturing to a large urn around half a metre tall with a Jawi inscription written below the upper lip. “This is quite an amusing story. The entirety of Kampung Ayer comprises smaller villages that are all interconnected. There is a wall with all the names of these smaller villages written on them … well most of them,” he grins. “There was once a Kg Sungai Kuyok, admittedly not the most savoury of names, but there was one once nonetheless. You will not find its name up on the wall and as time passes by, there are some who insist it never was regardless of what I can say. But look at that pot, it says right there on the inscription – Kg Sungai Kuyok,” he concludes with a bout of laughter. “People forget. It is natural, it happens. This is why conserving these items is important to me.”

With such a large inventory the far simpler question is obviously, “What do you not have?” which elicited a giggle from our host as he began listing out the different classifications of items. Some of the ore recognisable items include periuk-periuk (pots), gantangs (jugs and containers used in measurement), cilapas (decorative containers both old and modern), candle-holders, a commercially-produced congkat board (traditional game), a rougher, older hand-carved equivalent, as well as decommissioned canons, pistols and rifles (which the BHC team could not stop playing with).

Organised, stored and placed neatly on cupboards, shelves, glass display cabinets, and even neatly arranged on sections of the floor in the living room, the interior is surprisingly not as cluttered as one might assume given a genuine lifetime spent amassing such an impressive collection. A guling tangan set lies on the floor at the base of an item-riddle cupboard, nearby to an upright gambus. “This is rather unfortunate I do believe”, Rozan begins gesturing to both instruments. “Do you know that we have stopped making these and that there have been a fair few occasions when we had to actually order it from neighbouring Malaysia or Indonesia. We used to make these ourselves.” Taking a moment to reflect on this helped strengthen the reasoning behind what drives this homeowner and his love of our culture.

Traditional furniture in the form of couches well-suited to Hari Raya, accompanied by lush carpets run the length of the living room, against the backdrop of the windows illuminating the interior. A staircase in one

corner winds upwards and is decorated with faux vines wrapped around sections of the upper railing. Nearby the ground floor landing a table surrounded on all sides by staircase, cabinets and 2 couches, which gives off the impression of an island enclosure. The dense marble block from which the long slender neck of a large silver lamp emerges and extends from, occupies a space behind the curve of the staircase. This results in the lamp appearing as if out of nowhere. Vases filled with a variety of colourful flowers can be seen spread out evenly throughout the home adding a great deal of vibrancy and life, which in its own way offers a counterbalance of sorts to a collection some hundreds of years old.

An interesting man who spent a decade writing a well-known column within the Brunei Times prior to its closure, Rozan can definitely count himself as a storyteller in addition to his other accolades; after all it takes one to know one.

Talk about being hands on. Despite Br unei Dar uss alam’s ver y own inter national st ar, Wu Chun, possessing the means to easily hire a team of inter ior designers for any one of his business pursuit s; what a pleas ant sur pr ise i t was to lear n that the founder of F itness Zone, Energy K itchen, WoMen Hair S alon and Bake Culture, believes heavily in a high level of personal involvement . S o when you decide to visit Roti Culture, whether i t be for the f irst t ime or as a retur ning customer, and f ind yourself admir ing the many features of this spacious eater y, keep in mind that the inter ior of all h is business est ablishment s is 10 0% the produc t of his ac t ive imagination.

“I always get so many ideas jumping into my head,” Wu Chun says, while gesturing with an outstretched arm pointing out several flourishes and embellishments designed to draw a customer’s gaze. Interior designers in Brunei are good at what they do but “in my case I do not believe that anyone will be able to see the image in my mind as clearly as I do, so I need to be here to tell everyone what I want to achieve as the interior design needs to work well with the flow of business operations.” Seeing as how this latest contender in the Sultanate’s food & beverage industry only opened its doors to the public on October 15, but has received a positive response from the public regarding its overall aesthetics, it’s a good thing indeed that its founder chose to carry out the process entirely himself.

Out of all the cuisines that one could base their eatery on, why roti? Unable to hide the beginnings of a big grin on his face, Wu Chun’s eyes widen as he enthusiastically regales fond memories of eating roti from his childhood. It is easy to relate to him because to be honest, who doesn’t love roti? “It isn’t just the meal itself. I remember being a 10-year-old kid who enjoyed watching the chefs as they spun and flipped roti during its preparation. We want to retain this traditional culture and this is why we placed the roti station right in front of the general dining area, so people can look through the glass enclosure to watch as it is made.”

Sourcing his inspiration from multiple locales of

interest while travelling abroad, Wu Chun has embraced an open-concept floor plan that fuses trends from the ongoing hipster movement while paying tribute to the nation’s water village. Reclaimed wooden planks painted in yellow, red, blue and earthy brown hues were recycled from Kampung Ayer residences that had caught fire in the past, resulting in an essence of Kampung Ayer being saved and revived. A large image of Wu Chun casting a fishing net with one hand, while holding the hand of a young child against the backdrop of Kampung Ayer, makes up the focus wall at one end of the eatery and is yet another shout-out to the Water Village of the East.

“You know, whenever my friends from China or other countries come to visit, I always take them out for roti, and they love it! I really do think that some of the best roti in the world is made right here in Brunei. There was one time I remember bringing a group of friends to have roti for dinner, and they insisted on having it again for breakfast the next day before flying off,” Wu Chun says proudly, before adding that this is in fact the reason why Roti Culture is based in Batu Bersurat. “We are so close to the highway and other main roads, and hotels. I would love for Roti Culture to be a ‘must-visit, must-eat’ destination for tourists. So it made sense for it to be here.”

“Moreover, what makes our menu special is that some of the dishes are signature recipes contributed by family members, with recipes going back to the 1980’s. I come from a big family and most of my aunties are great chefs. So, we picked some of the best recipes to be included in our menu like the signature Pandan Kaya, Sup Tulang, Nasi Lemak and Chicken Curry. It’s a fusion of culture here,” added Wu Chun.”

Divided into 5 specialty zones that are unique in their own way, customers are spoilt for choice in this eatery that can accommodate around 70 people at any given time. From a general dining area and a slightly more private area (where most of the Kg Ayer planks were utilised), to an iron-wrought pergola, children’s play area and a bar section; the wide array of embellishments vary, and ultimately, succeed in adding a lot of personality to this space.

Page 47: TRENDS HAPPENINGS INSPIRING PLACES...The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, a well-loved franchise in Brunei recently renovated their Centrepoint Hotel branch, catching many people by surprise

47

The pergola – painted green and occupied by long polished wooden benches and tables – makes for an ideal family zone and brings to mind the image of families having a picnic in a park. “That’s why I wanted to set up the kids play section right next to the family zone”, Wu Chun points out before adding, “Family’s do tend to like this area and that is what we were hoping for.” Consisting of padded mats, a play castle and a few tables and chairs for children to draw and colour, family’s dining in will undoubtedly be grateful for an area meant to distract their kids.

In a move meant to cater to the lone visitor, 6 barstools take up a space nearby the beverage preparation area. Elaborating on this section, Wu Chun said “Not everyone will be accompanied by others, and

so we set up this area where a customer can choose to enjoy a drink, and have a conversation with our bartender, or watch whatever sport is playing on the TV.” With carpet grass plastered to the walls near the bar, and a pyramidal shelf holding sports paraphernalia inclusive of a basketball, boxing gloves, and Formulae 1 racing helmets, there is a slight macho vibe in play that many would find appealing. I was taken aback at this deliberate consideration for a market segment that is often overlooked in Brunei.

Roti Culture, which at the time of BHC’s visit had been operational for 2 weeks, has been packed with people since opening its doors to the public. It’s a good thing that there is a waiting area nearby the front entrance comprising a focus wall covered in tiles with

various batik-inspired designs and patterning, as well as benches that can seat around 10 people, because with an official grand launch slated for early December, there will undoubtedly be more and more visitors eager to check this locale out. In the case of the tiles, Wu Chun reiterated the importance of presenting aspects of local culture to all who dine in.

There is a pretty good selection of dishes available but the eatery’s namesake demands an innovative approach to their number 1 dish, which has led to the creation of fusion dishes, Roti Beijing, Roti Thailand and the signature dish – Salted Egg Yolk Roti (I definitely recommend this!). With all this in mind I’m pretty sure it is safe to say: The Roti Revolution has begun!

FAR LEFTVisitors can have a front row seat to the kitchen and watch their rotis being prepared. LEFTEach roti is made to order ensuring every visitor enjoys the best of what Roti Culture has to offer.

Be it first thing on a morning when customers trickle in desperate for their first dose of wake-up juice, or chilling out with friends and family after a hard day’s work, the ambient yellow glow emitted from funky lights, and the prominent use of wood is a recipe for aesthetics that continues to work well for CBTL in the Sultanate.

So you can imagine our surprise, and that of regulars, when it came to our collective attention a couple months ago that one of the more popular CBTL branches had closed temporarily for renovation and redesign work. Really, is this necessary? I mean honestly, how much can you improve upon an already nice interior without having to completely gut it out? The answer to that question, as CBTL has proven to us since the branch’s reopening, is quite a lot actually.

Now while the floor plan remains the same, a portion of the furniture has been changed resulting in more variety of table and chair types. The most notable and striking changes indoors are the new tiles and a custom-designed piece of cabinetry lining the wall at one end. The cool grey tiles with depictions of cubic patterning counterbalances the warm ambience we are all used to, adding a sense of freshness. Designed with diamond shaped shelves, the new cabinet of a light brown hue lies behind a lengthy seating section affixed to its front. With green upholstery in place, as well as a couple of green single-seats and a potted plant, the vibrancy is controlled and not over the top, meshing well with the other elements in place.

E asily considered an est ablished st aple within Br unei ’s burgeoning c afé culture, The Cof fee Bean & Tea Leaf is a much -loved f ranchise on our home -f ront with mult iple store loc ations nationwide. Regardless of whether their physic al presence occupy spaces within gover nment proper t ies such as the Ministr y of F inance and the RIPAS Hospit al, or commercial areas such as the G adong Business Distr ic t , the f ranchise has always designed their inter iors to be war m and welcoming.

A spidery configuration of light bulbs hangs from the ceiling over the central space, with beverage posters and a Mixel Screen making up the backdrop. Another new addition lies in front of the beverage collection counter, and takes the form of a bar-styled seating arrangement inclusive of stools for a half dozen guests. Increasingly more and more popular across the country, the inclusion of bar-styled seating arrangements has

noticeably become more prominent, as cafes and eateries strive to cater to every facet of their target market – including in this instance, the customer that comes in flying solo.

Low-lying seats covered in grey and green upholstery are popular choices for children and other youngsters who tend to gravitate to this arrangement that has been placed by the window, which has also

been embellished with the addition of an embossed design. Resembling row upon row of hearts, the repetitive patterning is a flourish that may escape the notice of some because of the small surface area it takes up unless you kick back and chill in that spot.

The cream of the crop of this latest refurbishment is the conversion of the outdoor seating area into a dual-level affair. With overhanging awnings, the ground level area can easily accommodate around a dozen people with roughly the same number fitting onto the new upper level. While the ground level is equipped with wood-topped tables on sturdy iron frames and chairs, the upper level plays host to circular tables armed with parasols to protect customers from harsh glare or light drizzle. Not only does this addition lends considerably

more presence – physically – to a cafe that was already easy to spot from a distance away, but personality too.

So while the new look was unexpected, it most certainly went down well with the BHC team, who apart from being regular CBTL customers, were also pleasantly surprised at the changes that warranted a definite need for a professional revisit. Well played Coffee Bean, well played.

“Paddington was doing well for about 3 years, but we wanted to change things up and do something more, so we decided to add our own brand into the mix,” Denise explains when asked about the rationale behind the addition of All-Time Delights. The idea of 2 eateries sharing the same space may seem odd, but they make it work. Though the Paddington House of Pancakes signage and hand-painted ‘All-Time Delights’ mural exist in opposite corners, the area in between doesn’t feel divided at all. In fact, the renovated space almost feels familiar. However, if you miss the original look of Paddington House of Pancakes, don’t worry. One corner of the eatery has been dubbed the ‘Paddington Corner’ where some of the previous decorations and furniture pieces remain virtually untouched.

If you’ve been to Padding ton House of Panc akes in Berakas recently, you’ve probably noticed that i t look s a l i t t le dif ferent . And maybe the name seems a l i t t le dif ferent, too. That ’s bec ause owner Denise Chai had it renovated and it now shares the space with All-T ime Delight s, the f amily ’s own addit ion to the popular panc ake chain. From ever y det ail of the inter ior to each new item on the menu, Denise and her f amily put a lot of thought into their transfor mation of the eater y.

When asked who was the brain behind the interior design, “My father,” Denise tells BHC. “He knew how he wanted this space to look and made sure everything fit his vision.” She further explained that they felt the place looked too dark, which is why the majority of the changes had to do with the eatery’s new colour palette. What were once dark walls are now replaced with varying hues of warm, calming brown and taupe that complement the smooth concrete floor.

Upon entering All-Time Delights, it’s hard to miss the immense white clock that contrasts nicely with the warm toned wall. “We saw this clock when we were in Australia. Seeing ‘Paddington’ on it, we just had to get it (for the eatery) so we hand carried it back to Brunei,” Denise recalls. The decorations at the eatery are mementoes from the owner’s travels. Numerous framed art pieces and wall decorations hang on the walls. “We like buying art pieces as souvenirs, but we end up with too many, so we decided to display them here,” she tells BHC.

What caught the BHC team’s eye, however, was the ceiling where there were dark brown panels with cut out stencils of different types of leaves. With the light paint of the ceiling peeking through the stencils, the shapes added an understated element of nature to the interior design. Another touch of nature in the eatery comes in the form of tall leafy plants in long blue planters which act as a partition. “If needed, we can remove the plants and move the planters to make more space. If it’s for an event, we can put boards on the planters and turn them into buffet tables,” Denise explains.

All-Time Delights can comfortably fit about 80 people at a time, but that can be increased to 100 should the occasion arise. Families planning to bring kids will be happy to know that All-Time Delights is a child-friendly eatery. In addition to having colourful plastic cups especially for the little ones, there is also a designated children’s play area with shelves of toys and a small table with chairs. Next to the play area, there’s a reading area with magazine racks and 4 single-seat sofas. There is also a coffee table with couches for those looking for a more laidback dining experience.

Adding All-Time Delights to Paddington House of Pancakes makes for an interesting menu that offers diners the best of both worlds. Paddington’s famous pancake dishes are still available, including their famous Classic Buckleberry and Aussie Burger. As for the All-Time Delights specialty, they offer a unique take on a local favourite, Kolo Mee. This is the most popular menu item as diners are able to choose what noodles, sauce and toppings they would like to have. What makes the Kolo Mee special is that the sauces are made fresh daily by Denise’s mother. On top of that, the toppings include Chicken Chop, Ayam Penyet and the indulgent crackling chicken skin (we could go on about this endlessly!). Another popular menu item is the breaded chicken wings which come in 3 flavours: original, spicy and sambal belacan. Suffice to say that the eatery’s motto proves true: All Time Delights, All Day Everyday!

WHE R E TO B U Y

Feez y Wuzz y presents Brunei Bean Bag. S urely you have heard of them by now, and i f you haven’t then i t is about t ime that you did!

So, why should you invest in one of these comfortable and vibrant bean bags for your home or office? Available in different designs and colours, this product which is made locally has proven itself a popular purchase among Bruneians because of its overall quality, reasonable price range, and its 3-stage safety features.

The beans for this range of products are all encased within an inner mesh before being placed in a protective covering that utilises both a zipper and Velcro strips to ensure that children are unable to access the beads.

Not convinced? Following the success of the limited edition Golden Jubilee bean bags, the new Jongsarat-styled bean bags coming to the Brunei market are available in 4 different colours – blue, brown, grey and indigo. More recently, this company has started renting out its products as well, in a continuing testament to the Brunei Bean Bag team’s need to innovate. Purchases are inclusive of free deliveries to your home so you don’t even need to step out of your house to buy one, just pick up the phone and give them a call because, yes, it is that easy.
