Trend 954 Readers,

This season, producing the magazine has been a wonderful collaborative experience. As a whole, we have coalesced our individual expressions of what spring fashion and culture truly represent into one informative, streamlined thought. From Miami International Fashion Week (Miami Fashion Week, 54), to online shopping trends (Pink Wasabi, 28), to underground Electric Music Revolutions (Electric Revolution, 53), this spring issue challenges the local South Floridian to take a second look at the seemingly mundane urban spaces around us. We were pleasantly surprised at the many culturally relevant stories, events, and ventures occurring below the surface of our usual and, dare we say, routine epi-surface; it is common for many suburb/urbanites to gloss over any activities outside their circle of awareness. For some of our contributors this notion proved true; as each writer reached out into the community, they returned to the project fully enlightened and charged with creative content.

Not only are we elated to share our presentation with our readers, but we are grateful for the experience of getting to know our community from a different perspective. In addition, the spring issue is filled with the latest beauty (5 Hot Makeup Trends, 21) and fashion trends (The Hef Effect, 32) that will seamlessly work itself into your wardrobe and even your bedroom’s décor (Update Your Bedroom, 20). Our spring issue can be characterized as more than just an update about the upcoming fashions, but also a redefining of South Floridian interest.

Trend 954: Are there any updates within the Fashion Depart-ment?AW: We are reaching out to the community with a lot of charity events. It is really important for our students to stay active and apply their fashion knowledge into real-life experiences. We’re working on an event called Art in the Park with Elease Donovan. It will celebrate Art, Fashion, and Food to benefit the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida. Also, we are working on the an-nual Food and Wine Festival, as well as a charity fashion show that features mothers and daughters on the runway with JAFCO (Jewish Adoption Foster Care Options).

Trend 954: Will there be any updates to the program or curricu-lum?AW: We have a new class called Individual Fashion Style. It is a great class to learn interpersonal skills while acting as a medium between concept and execution in personal styling. In this class, students learn how to appropriately dress a variety of body types and skin tones. Overall, it gives you the motor functions to skillfully enhance your clients and become a strong Image Consultant. Upcoming, we have software updates to the Textile Design classes. We will be adopting a program called Kaledo that will work more seamlessly and efficiently for creating garments; this could be implemented in just a few quarters. The most important aspect that students should be aspiring towards is becoming involved in the community, or with events that are in line with their career path. It isn’t enough to just at-tend classes and get perfect grades. It takes someone espe-cially driven to make a name for themselves by networking and constantly staying active. By participating with established and experienced pillars in the industry, you can gain valuable and employable skills that can’t be taught in an Art Institute setting.

Food Truck INVASION!Do you love going out for something to eat, and find yourself with a large variety of food from which you can choose? Well, here in South Florida it’s your moment! Food trucks are now a popular trend, and we can see them appearing all over the place.

What if I told you that right in Downtown Hollywood there is a place where these cool and delicious restaurants-on-wheels meet up? It’s true! Every Monday, from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm all kinds of food trucks meet in the ArtsPark at Young Circle in Downtown Hollywood.

According to the city of Hollywood, the ArtsPark is located right in a ten acre traffic circle right off US 1, which makes it very ac-cessible and easy to find. It is a very fun and entertaining place to visit with friends and family, since all kinds of events are going on weekly. The Food Truck Invasion is one of the main entertainment events that go on each week, which offers people an ama-zing afternoon to spend with loved ones.

At 5:30 pm every Monday, more than 20 different food trucks meet to offer all kinds of food, from Mexican tacos and nachos to fish; from Italian dishes to delicious grill; and don’t forget to leave room for dessert! The cute little trucks offer cupcakes and lava-cakes, which are a must for the night. The large variety of food makes it easy for the whole family to choose the one of their preference and then enjoy it together! As if this wasn’t fun enough, there is also music being played and lighting to make an even more pleasant evening to enjoy with friends and family.

LA Sweets is just one of the bakeries to fea-ture this craze. Georgetown Cupcake, which has been featured on the Food Network is another cupcake specialty bakery. They be-gan in Georgetown, right in Washington, D.C. They have since grown to have locations in New York, Maryland, and Boston, and ship nationwide, as well.

A line can be found wrapped around the Georgetown location at any hour of the day as it is a tourist hot spot. A couple blocks down the road is Sprinkles Cupcakes, which

is this girl’s favorite choice. It is also con-sidered one of the first bakeries to specialize in cupcakes.

No matter the loca-tion, and no matter the price, cupcakes will al-ways remain to be little delightful treasures that brighten up anyone’s day.

This culinary trend has hit many major U.S. cities, including New York, L.A., Washington, D.C., and now Miami. People are flocking to local bakeries to devour cupcakes of all sizes and proportions.

I recently visited LA Sweets on Brickell Avenue and was delighted to see such a fun bakery. LA Sweets specializes in miniature cupcakes that feature fun flavors like chocolate nutella, vanilla oreo, dark chocolate, and red velvet.

LA Sweets was named for its founder, Letty Alvarez. Fueled by her passion for baking and a hole in this niche market, she attended master classes in order to perfect her fanciful skill. Alvarez now has two locations, the one on Brickell Avenue and another in the Shops at Sunset Avenue.

Alvarez has also tapped into another culture that is also a recent trend, online social media. LA Sweets posts their specials on Twitter

Many fruits contain antioxidants which are one of the best ways to cleanse the body of toxins. Evidently, the most popular service can be found at Equinox in the Aventura Mall. One treatment of note is the strawberry facial, which removes dead skin cells and helps to reduce wrinkles leaving a more even skin tone.

For the 22nd consecutive year, comes an event so big that it brings life from all over Florida to meet in the same place: Coconut Grove. Some might think that it is just like any other food and wine tas-ting event, but the fact is this one is much more. Created by Cedella Marley Booker, the 9 Mile Music Festi-val started out as an event of love. Over the years, the festi-val has undergone many name changes, including “The Caribbean Music Festival,” finally evolv-ing into what is known as the 9 Mile Mu-sic Festival.

This reggae music event is more than just your average concert; it has a com-mitment to doing good and spreading love. The 9 Mile Music Festival is ac-countable for gathering over two mil-lion canned goods during its 18 year span, in an effort to continuously give back to the community.

Four canned goods are required to enter the event, along with an admis-sion ticket; the goods are collected and then distributed across shelters in Miami and Jamaica. Reggae music is a way of life for many people and this event is not only to jam out, but a way to give back to the community. Alex.Noble By: Jessica Frazier

ou may not know Alex Noble, but you have surely seen his work. Alex Noble is the creative genius that

is behind the eclectic, crazy looks of Lady Gaga and many more. Just because he is relatively new to the fashion industry, doesn’t mean Noble is a new artist. This London resident isn’t just a designer, he is a passionate artist and creator and has been for many years now. His exhibits and ab-stract artwork are simple and breath-taking.

He has done styling for Japanese Vogue Homme, graphic design work, participated in London Fashion Week, and he creates art that is bizarre yet makes sense. The costume designs he creates for Lady Gaga for instance, the blue leather outfit from her “Ju-das” music video, shows you how imaginative and detailed his designs are. This is also what makes his de-signs unique and one of a kind. He has designed for her appearance at the Video Music Awards and of course, her famous Monster Ball Tour back in 2010.

If that’s not enough, Noble is the creative director of Batty Bass, a col-laboration with DJ Hannah Holland. It is a record label, fashion label, and a club in London’s West End. ing, with peep toe shoes on along with a skirt. This is exactly what Lea Vendetta did on the season primier of Ink Masters. The tattoo artist, is a Boynton Beach Beach resident and is starring in a new show by Spike TV

called, “Ink Master.”

Lea found her love for tattoos at the young age of 18, when she entered a tattoo shop in France and wanted a stylized, black ace of spades from the famous rock band Moto-rhead. The artist refused and told her to go home and come back when she knew what she really wanted.

Needless to say she never returned because she said, “I know what I want to do.” And at that point in her life she had already changed her hair to the striking hot scarlet red and was on her path to desire.

Today, you can find Lea tattooing in Boca Raton, Florida at A Stroke of Genius for the of $200-an-hour. She also hosted the watch party for Ink Master at Spin Ultra Lounge with rocker-raconteur Dave Navarro and Chris Nunez of “Miami Ink” fame.

The series starts on Tuesday, January 16th un-til the final elimination. The show gathered ten top tattoo artists from around the country to compete for the grand prize, $100,000.

The series has eight episodes, with guest judg-es every week. It is grueling reality of emotions and celebrations that will be shown, and ac-cording to Lea, “It was a nonstop emotional rollercoaster.” She describes production days beginning as early as 7 a.m. and sometimes running to midnight. “We were laughing a lot, we were angry. There was a lot of stress.” Tune in Tuesdays at 10 p.m. to see Lea Vendetta, our South Florida candidate, on her journey through the Ink Masters competition.

Spring break season is upon us. Usu-ally around this time of year, many of us have made arrangements to do some-thing exciting over the break. However, due to hard economic times, not ev-eryone can afford an expensive vaca-tion.

Staycationing has become a huge trend in the United States. For those of you who are not aware, a staycation is a holiday or break that is near your home. Rather than splurge on an ex-pensive spring break vacation, take a look at these inexpensive alternatives that are all located here in South Florida.

Top 5 Staycation Spots: 1. Miami Seaquarium The Seaquarium has many exciting attrac-tions that will make you feel like a little kid again. Some of the them include dolphin and whale shows, petting stingrays, and feeding manatees. Adult prices are around $40. www.miamiseaquarium.com/

4. Pines Ice ArenaIt is possible to escape the Florida heat this spring break season! An ice skating rink is a great place to get some exercise, and is also a unique location for a date. 5. Miami Marlins GameThe Miami Marlins have recently moved into their own stadium. At the new stadium, you can sit back, eat a hotdog, and maybe even catch a foul ball. Tickets start around $10. www.miami.marlins.mlb.com

In the area of Art Deco and Ocean Drive, many tourists stop to point, aim, and snap pictures of such a beautiful white mansion. In the hot sunny days in Miami Beach, the Casa Casuarinas has been of great importance in the history of Miami, and was the head-quarters of a king of the fashion em-pire. Casa Casuarinas was built in 1930 to resemble the Alcazar de Colon in Santo Domingo that Christopher Co-lumbus’ son built in 1510.

In 1992, Ocean Drive gained one of its most noted residents, Gianni Ver-sace. The designer bought his estate initially for $2.9 million. However, he also received permission from the city to build and expand on it. As a result, he demolished the nearby hotel and a two-story building adding 6,100 feet and transforming this house into a

casamagnificent and eye-catching home, making it known as Versace’s Miami Beach house or the Versace Mansion.

However in 1997, while making his usu-al stroll to the nearby coffee shop, Ver-sace came back to his home where he was shot and killed making the Ver-sace Mansion infamously known for the death place of Gianni Versace. In September 2000, Peter Loftin, a tele-communications billionaire, has pur-chased this mansion for $19 million and stays there from time to time. It has now become more than just a hotel but a member’s only club that holds private events and private parties. The mansion also has scheduled tours to teach about its unique history and cur-rent events.

The District is continuously expanding. It now houses the “Miami Fashion’s Night Out (FNO),” and after new announce-ments made by the LVMH Company last year, The District will be the place chosen for the relocation of Louis Vuit-ton, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy and Fendi boutiques from The Bal Harbour Shops. Cartier, Hermes, and Dior are also ex-pected to relocate here. Needless to say, the future of the Miami Design District looks bright, it will be the new place to be for us “fashion lovers,” and it promises to make the future Miami FNO excel our expectations.

The Miami Design District is located in the heart of Mid-Town Miami. Former-ly it was an old neighborhood called Buena Vista, until the early 1990’s when interior designers and design brands like Holly Hunt, Peter Page and Jona-than Adler, started opening their stores on the district.

During the 1990’s and early 2000’s the district remained basically the inte-rior designer’s paradise. But after the opening of Christian Louboutin bou-tique in 2009, it started attracting fash-ion brands as well. By 2011 the Miami Design District had new fashion addi-tions with Marni and Martin Margiela.

Fitness at the BeachBy: Christie Kiesel

1. Start with walking lunges for 30 seconds - put your feet together and hands on your hips. Step one foot forward and lower until your right thigh is parallel with the ground. Then step your left foot next to the right and repeat.2. Continue with plyo lunges for another 30 sec-onds - get into the lunge position. Jump up and in mid-air switch legs and repeat.3. Do traditional squats for 30 seconds and do squat thrust for another 30 seconds - stand with your hands by your side and drop to the ground in a crouched position. Put your hands in the sand and hop your feet behind you. Your body should be in one long, straight line from head to toe. Hop back and repeat4. Time for crab walks - sit in the sand with your feet flat and behind you. Lift your butt up and crab walk backwards super fast! 5. Finish with planks - you’re sure going to feel this! Get on your hands and knees and push your body into a plank position. Contracting your abs hold for 30 seconds, release and repeat once.

Fort Lauderdale Beach is an amazing place to relax, dine, shop, and soak up the sun, but it is also a great place to workout. Swimming in the ocean is much tougher than doing laps in the pool since the water is much denser and the waves crash down upon you. Also, sand provides an uneven surface and less stability which challenges your legs more than any other surface. You can enjoy the fresh air and head off for a barefoot run along the shore, while learn-ing to surf and skim board.

*Fun Move: Try going out into knee-deep water to run paral-lel to the shore for quick dash-es. The water adds resistance and challenges your muscles!

Update Your BedroomBy: Christie Kiesel

Still have that teenage or dorm-style bedroom? Are you ready to make a dramatic change to the look of your room? I’m not saying that it’s time to put your grandmother’s quilts out, but if you want that sophisticated and chic room, then I have some great, budget conscious tips for you.

Stay simple. Pick one color for your walls; stay away from bright colors such as hot pink or bright yellow. By picking grey or beige tones, it will be less of a headache to change your style if you choose to repaint. If you really want to be bold try a statement color like teal. Instead of having posters all over your walls, choose a few quality pieces of art work. By avoiding clutter, your piec-es will draw more attention.

Buy a stand out rug. You don’t have to let your floors go unno-ticed. A beautiful rug towards the end of your bed makes a bold statement.

The best way to add designs to your walls without making them permanent is to use wall

decals. They’re inexpensive and you can change them as often as you would like.

Combine and display storage. We know you have a lot of stuff, I know I do. It’s really hard to stay organized. Use storage benches at the end of your bed. Under the bed storage bags and over the door hangers for purses and shoes are my favorite.

Statement lamps on a nightstand on each side of your bed leave room for a lot of creativity. Pick a color that comple-ments your bedding for a maximized look.

After hiding your nails under thick, dark nail polish all winter, it is finally time to let your nails breathe! With this trend, creamy shades of pinks, whites and neutrals are all the craze.

Beautiful, rich reds and modest pastels were among the many feminine colors that were spot-ted down the runway this season. Colors resem-bled those of our favorite flowers making the polish extra special for the spring.

Just because the holidays are over does not mean it is time to put away your shimmer and glitter polish, as this is one of the hottest trends for spring 2012. The shades have switched from dark black and burgundy to silver glitter polish and baby blue shimmer.

This was a breakthrough year in nail fashion and now we have another new advanced Magnetic Polish, which com-bines metallic particles and a magnet installed in the brush of polish. You simply paint your nails with the polish, wait till it dries, then take the cap off the brush and wave it around your nail to create a unique design. If you are not comfort-able creating your own design, you can simply purchase a pattern that has been predesigned.

Simply as what it sounds, you turn around your traditional French manicure to make a different, distinctive shape. The round oval or square end is pointed towards your cuticle and the rest of the polish covers the end of your nail. ver looked at a picture of one of your favorite celebrities wearing a leather jack-et or spiked bracelet and thought to your-self, “There’s no way that could possibly look good on me?” Well I’m here to tell you that anyone can make this trend work for them. All you need to do is figure out how to incorporate it into your everyday style. For example, if you have a very girly style and often find yourself wearing dresses, then you could simply pair one of your floral dresses with a simple leather jacket and a nice pair of heels. This will add an element of grunge to an otherwise girly outfit. Some of you may be wondering, “How can I add spikes to my outfit?” There are plenty of ways that you could add this element to your outfit. With this trend becoming popular you have many companies adding some spikes to everyday items. There are many clutches that have subtle spikes that are great with any outfit. Many shoe companies have also added this into their shoe designs. Sam Edelman has added spikes to a pair of very cute heels. These can be worn with a cute dress or possibly a cute shirt and jeans. Never Too Young For Fashion

“When I grow up I want to be a…” That’s what the average young child says when talking about his or her future, but not Christopher Abella. At the mere age of 11 he has already reached his dream job. The Florida native had his first showcase this past year at Trios on the Bay in North Bay Village. He, along with 3 adult designers, showed their inspira-tional work. He showed off 8 couture dresses that were intricately designed, one being a bridal gown. Christopher is a student at The Doral Conservatory and School for the Arts. He has always had a knack for drawing and designing but with the help of his manager Katharine Biscardi, he assembled those beautiful runway-ready dresses. Christopher Abella is enjoying being a kid and having fun as well as currently working on new designs and different types of art. He has already stated that he wants to, “Make Miami right up there in the fashion world.” With a long life and road ahead of him, I’m sure this won’t be the last we hear of this boy and his passion for fash-ion. call this, “The Hef Effect.” Play-boy’s founder and chief-editor Hugh Hefner, famous for his silk pajamas and smoking jack-ets, might have loaned some in-spiration to trend setters this year.

Although one may think paja-mas are only for lounging around the house, top designers such as Louis Vuitton, Celine, and Salvatore Ferragamo are saying why not? Perhaps they were inspired by Hefner, who has pulled off the loungy look for years.

Putting a fashionable twist on the bedroom wardrobe, making it appropriate for a nice evening ensemble will make you think twice before getting dressed if this look is for you. years past. Waist lines are a tad higher, colors are a bit brighter and patterns exponentially capture every onlookers inspired gaze.

Naturally, these changing elements that are trending, simultaneously coalesce in to a strong interpretation of women’s business attire. This season, a major overhaul in women’s suiting has conse-quently ditched the conservative ideals of the corporately sartorial expecta-tions, thequietly subdued, “old boys club.”

Debuting as a pre-fall must see, design-ers of note such as Alexander Wang, Diane Von Furstenberg and Celine all capitalize on the vastly changing work-ing girl attire. From elongating hem lines, to bold, cheeky patterns, and highly texturized blazers, there are no short-ages when referring to variety.

In particular, Calvin Klein sends his de-lectable pieces down the runway that reminisce the 1940’s while exemplifying a modernity that can cater to every need of the 9 to 5 gal. Think of women’s suits this season as a worldwide battle cry exclaiming “Death to the 80’s and death to shoulder pads!”

If you go to the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, chances are you have seen one of the designer’s illustrious de-signs.

I sat down with our very own creative genius, and had a chance to pick apart his brain and the way he thinks.

Trend954: Where do you find your inspiration from?

MP: Well it really depends on the assignment or the look I’m working on.

Trend954: Like do you go to a park, a museum, or watch TV...

MP: No, I don’t watch TV at all. I hate TV actually. I think it sucks out your energy and creative juices in general. I find my inspi-

completely honest with you. Be-cause when I was little, I didn’t have much, and I would shelter myself away to my bedroom to play video games, and it altered my universe and way of thinking. So now I draw direct inspiration from fantasy.

Trend954: Describe the design process for you. Start to finish.

MP: My design process starts from a concept sketch. So, if I’m thinking of something re-ally creative and interesting, I’ll come up with a whole bunch of different shapes and a whole bunch of different bigger than life ideas. Then I’ll take it and do more ready-to-wear things. So I’ll take a giant, crazy balloon dress and turn it into something a little bit more interesting, as far as ready-to-wear is concerned. And it goes from buying the fabric to pattern making, then

making the dress fit, and then that’s it.

Trend954: Who or what originally inclined you to want to be a designer?

MP: Well honestly, when I gradu-ated from high school, I had a really good GPA, 4.3. My family really urged me to be a doctor because I have the brains for it.

But I’m totally spastic and artis-tic so I didn’t think that was the right road for me. So I did a little bit of research and I found that I was really good at drawing, and what I was drawing wasn’t just girls, but it was their clothes, mainly. So through my research, I thought fashion design might be kind of interesting to do. Turns out, I’m actually kind of good at it.

Trend954: Which designers to you aspire to be like or are in-spired by?

MP: My favorite, favorite, abso-lutely favorite designer is Geor-gina Chapman, from Marchesa. Because everything is super flirty, girly, with a fantasy ele-ment, as well.

MP: It’s kind of funny, but I’ve al-ways loved Hilary Duff and have always wanted to make her a dress. But currently, the mega-stars I would love to design for are Emma Stone, Emma Wat-son, and Coco Rocha.

Trend954: What is your dream job, upon graduation?

MP: Upon graduation, I would really like to do work alongside a pattern maker or a head de-signer, as an assistant. I wanna get the background knowledge in the industry in a professional atmosphere.Trend954: Where do you see yourself in 10-15 years?

MP: I wanna have my own busi-

ness and run my own design label.

Trend954: Who is your target consumer or audience?

MP: The target consumer is gonna be a girl who is a little punk rock and edgy. But she is also a little flirty and whimsical, too. She’s a fashion girl. She’ll

go and rent an outfit if it means that she’ll look cuter than the rest. I design for a contempo-rary, eclectic, edgy girl.

Trend954: What is your favorite fabric to work with?

MP: I love working with chiffon and organza.

Trend954: What’s your favorite color?

MP: Oh my favorite color is green!

Trend954: Approximately how many fashion shows or events have your garments been fea-tured in?

MP: Oh my gosh. Since being at the Art Institute I have done one full-fledged production where I have shown 18 looks. But as far as shows are concerned, that my pieces have been in, I’d say a dozen, at least. I do a lot of work with the Art Institute, just helping out and helping to make the school to shine bright-er than what it was before the event.

Trend954: What are some of your favorite extracurricular activities?

MP: I’m one of the lab monitors

and help students with sewing, pattern making, and I’m re-ally good at illustrating so I’m always helping other students to be inspired. And I LOVE Starbucks! So if that’s an extra-curricular, I’m on it. And I’m a swimmer, so I always swim.

After the interview, I could not help but feel creatively inspired to begin my own fashion line.

Mitchell is hands-down, one of the most impactful design-ers and students at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale currently, and historically. We will definitely be seeing more of him on the runways.

s an intern for Harper’s Bazaar, I was very fortunate to make impor-tant professional connections, be a

part of amazing photo shoots, and work in the dreamy fashion closet. You’re prob-ably thinking, “What could be so bad about being surrounded by Versace gowns, Louboutin heels, and Balenciaga bags?”

While this does sound like very fashionista’s

dream come true, it’s not all about the de-signer luxury items. You must be prepared for a high-stress, high-energy environment and be willing and able to do the most bazaar things when interning at a fashion magazine.

Being an intern at one the major fashion mag-azines is one of the best experiences a fashion major could have. But it is also one of the hard-est and most humbling of experiences. It is an opportunity to help fully understand the fash-ion industry. However, it requires a great deal of self-control, a need to act accordingly, a

The responsibilities are broad and end-less. They include: personal errands for the editors, building and taking down garment racks, making board copies for the design meetings, picking up and dropping off any-thing and everything, packing for the pho-to shoots, and being a personal secretary.

Interning at a fashion magazine you QUICKLY realize the editors are royalty and you, the intern, are the peasants. So, consequently, if you happen to walk into the bathroom or into the elevator at the same time as the editor-in-chief does, you turn around and walk out. Your presence is not needed nor welcome.

Like all peasants, you do not make eye contact with anyone with an important title and you most certainly do not speak to any of them.

There are many stories to tell about my time at Harper’s Bazaar, all fashion magazine interns have them, but my personal favorite which I would like to share with you involves a gift.

One of the editor’s assistants handed me a vintage Dior bracelet at work saying it was a gift from her boss for my job well done at a photo shoot. Needless to say, I wanted to say

“This one time when I was interning for Teen Vogue, I was asked to attend a photo shoot in Brooklyn, NY. The only problem was I had to find my own way of getting transportation. That was a five mile walk and I had to walk in the snow.”

Have you ever anticipated a great visit to a restaurant only to be let down from how long the wait was and settled for something else? Only to learn that the restaurant was really worth the

wait? Below is compiled a list of restaurants that are really worth the wait.

Ever have that craving for tacos but can’t seem to find the right place that will not only fulfill your tummy but be easy on your wallet too? Rocco’s Tacos is not only reasonably priced but has great food and an easy going atmosphere. They offer guaca-mole prepared tableside (which has a following of its own) paired with their famous handmade chips. Their tacos and burritos are filled with the freshest ingredients. They have been open for six years and have no known health code violations in any of their four locations! Rocco’s will be sure to have you craving tacos for weeks! However the wait time without a reservation can be a bit frightening at 8pm on Saturday. For two, the wait could be up to two hours! But the minute you sit down and have the refreshing, cold margarita, you’ll forget that you waited at all. There are four locations: Las Olas Blvd, Celematis St. in West Palm Beach (first lo-cation), Town Center in Boca Raton, and PGA Blvd in Palm Beach Gardens (Opening Summer 2012). An average meal for two costs anywhere from $30-$40. All locations are open Sunday through Wednesday 11:30AM-11:30PM and Thursday through Saturday 11AM-11PM. Tatu is located in the Seminole Hard Rock & Casino and it has people flocking from all over South Florida not only for the chance to spot a celebrity or their sleek club-like atmosphere, but for their amazing menu offering not only specialized sushi rolls but Asian inspired dishes such as Sesame Chicken and Mongolian Beef. Tatu is known for their Scorpion Bowl that is perfect to share with exotic fruit juices, Ultimate Vodka, Amaretto and Bacardi Select. The drink is brought to the table, then the server lights the bowl on fire for guests! Once inside each waiter makes an effort to give each guest an unbelievable experience with high quality service and a very short wait time for orders to be delivered to the table. Tatu only take reservations up to 6PM on the weekends and 5PM on the weekdays. If you are aren’t lucky enough to snag a reservation, wait time for two on a Saturday night at 8PM could be anywhere from two hours to three hours. An average meal for two costs anywhere from $40-$80. Tatu is closed on Monday however they are open Sunday through Thursday 5:30PM to 11PM and Friday and Saturday 5:30PM to 1AM with the outside bar open until 3AM. No seafood in this world is comparable to Joe’s Stone Crab located in Miami. All food is extremely fresh and the plates are large (which is unheard of for seafood dishes, due to the high cost of the ingredients). Joe’s Stone Crab is based on three concepts: the love of food, good friends, and family. And their love of food continues to grow today, many customers were dying to know how to make their favorite dishes and Joe’s decided that they would show them just that. You can now find the recipe for your favorite dish on their website! This low key restaurant is not low key when it comes to waiting times. The wait for two on a Saturday night at 8pm could be anywhere from one to three hours. An average meal for two costs anywhere from $40-$65. Joe’s Stone Crab is open from 11:30am to 2pm Tuesday through Saturday, as well as dinner from 5pm to 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Summer hours are not yet announced. Café Martorano is both worth the wait and worth the calories. With their American-Italian menu and mozzarella bar it is sure to please even the pickiest eater. For starters, everything is covered in gourmet cheese and who doesn’t love cheese?! The restaurant gives off a big Italian dinner vibe with lots of TVs tuned into the latest sports games, big and large red furniture, and a welcoming friendly staff that makes you feel right at home. Café Martorano takes a twist on traditional recipes such as the appetizer mozzarella stuffed pepper that is so large and delicious, you could make a dinner out of it. Try to get a reservation because you might age like their wine just waiting for a table! Wait for two on a Saturday at 8pm could be anywhere for one hour to three hours. An average meal for two costs any-where from $30-$65. They have two locations in Florida, one in Fort Lauderdale off Oakland Park (the original restaurant) and the other located in Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood. ach year Wall Street compiles a list of brands that are going to disappear in

the near-term. Last year’s list proved to be prescient in many instances, predicting the demise of T-Mobile among others. This year’s list takes a methodical approach in deciding which brand would be absolved in the fires of yesterday’s memories. Major indicators were rapid fall-off in sales and steep losses; public disclosures by the parent of the brand that it might go out of business; rapidly ris-ing costs that are extremely unlikely to be recouped through higher prices; companies which are sold; companies that go into bank-ruptcy; firms that have lost the great majority of their customers; and operations with rap-idly withering market shares. Each of the ten brands on the list suffer from one or more of these problems. Each of the ten will be gone, based on our definitions, within 18 months. The following outlines the top five.

5 SearsSears Holdings experienced a total drop in revenue from $9.7 billion to $341 million for the quarter which closed April 30, 2011. The company had a net loss of $170 million. Sears Holdings was created by a merger of the parents of the two chains of Kmart and Sears. The operation has been a disaster ever since the company has tried to run 4,000 stores which operate across the U.S. and Canada.

Domestic locations were off by 5.2% in the first quarter and Kmart’s were down 1.6%. Last year domestic comparable store sales declined 1.6% in the total, with an increase at Kmart of .7% and a

decline at Sears Domestic of 3.6%. New CEO Lou D’Ambrosio recently theorized that the only reasonable solution to the firm’s financial problems is to stop supporting two brands which compete with one another and larger rivals such as Wal-Mart and Target. The cost to market two brands and maintain stores which overlap one another geographically must be in the hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Not to mention, the employee and supply chain costs are also gigantic. The path D’Ambrosio is likely to take is to consolidate the two brands into one; keeping the better performing Kmart and shuttering Sears.

4 American ApparelThe once-hip retailer reached the brink of bankruptcy earlier this year, as it currently trades as a penny stock. The company had three stores and $82 million in revenue in 2003. Those numbers reached 260 stores and $545 million in 2008. Ultimately, American Apparel posted a net loss for the period of $21 million, and is also almost certainly under gross margin pressure because of the rise in cotton prices. The retailer raised $14.9 million in April by selling shares at a discount of 43% to a group of private investors led by Canadian financiers. According to Reuters, the 15.8 million shares sold

represented 20.3% of the company’s outstanding stock. That sum is not nearly enough to keep American Apparel going. In addition, it does not help matters that the company’s founder and CEO, Dov Charney, has been a defendant

in several lawsuits filed by former employees alleging sexual harassment.

The firm pioneered the “drive-in” fast food format. A&W began to sell canned versions of its sodas in 1971 which is the only part of the business that will survive as a container beverage business which is now owned by Dr. Pepper and Snapple. The A&W restaurant business is too small to be viable now as it has 322 outlets in the U.S and 317 outside the U.S at the end of last year. All were operated by franchisees. By contrast, their flagship KFC had 5,055 stores in the U.S. and 11,798 overseas. Subway has 35,000 locations worldwide, and McDonald’s has nearly as many. A&W does not have the ability to market itself against these chains and at least a dozen other fast food operators like Burger King. Due to its size it cannot efficiently handle food purchases, logistics, and transportation costs compared to competitors many times as large.

1 Sony Pictures

Sony bought what was Columbia Tri-Star Picture in 1989 for $3.4 billion and the operation has done poorly recently. Sony’s fiscal year ends in March, for the period, and revenue for the group dropped 15% to $7.2 billion and operating income fell by 10% to $466 million. In addition, it lost $3.1 billion in its latest fiscal year on revenue of $86.5 billion. Sony’s gaming system group is also under siege by Microsoft and Nintendo while its consumer electronics group faces an overwhelming challenge from Apple. The company’s future prospects have been further damaged by the earthquake in Japan and the hacking of its large PlayStation Network. CEO Howard Stringer is under pressure to do something to increase the value of Sony’s shares. The only valuable asset with which he can easily part is Columbia which would attract interest from a number of large media operations, which may lead to Sony Entertainment disappearing with the sale of its assets.

3 Saab

Saab’s problem is that it was never more than a niche brand in an industry dominated by very large players such as Ford and Chevrolet. It did not build very inexpensive cars like VW did, or expensive sports cars as Porsche. Saab’s models were mediocre compared to larger manufacturers, not to mention, that it does not have a wide number of models to suit different budgets and driver tastes. GM decided to jettison the brand in late 2008, and the small company quickly became insolvent. Saab finally found a buyer in high-end car maker Spyker which took control of the company last year. Spyker quickly ran low on money because only 32,000 Saabs were sold in 2010. Spyker turned to Chinese industrial investors for money. Pang Da Automobile agreed to take an equity stake in the company however, the agreement is not binding, and with a potential of global sales which are still below 50,000 a year based on manufacturing and marketing operations, and demand, Saab is no longer a financially viable brand.

The Wynwood Walls

“The Wynwood Walls” are located in the Warehouse District in Miami, FL. World-class murals displaying unappreciated graffiti and street art has caused a stir in the Miami area. Picture giant canvases (walls) bringing out the greatest street art ever in one place. The art is composed of several artists from around the world: United States, Brazil, Belgium, Mexico, Portugal, Ukraine, Greece, Spain,

Germany, France, and Japan. Six separate buildings between 25th and 26th were part of the development plan but it has now extended pass the Warehouse District and into the view of the public. The goal of this project was to create a center where people could gravitate to and explore, as well as to develop the area’s

pedestrian potential.

The man behind it all is Tony Goldman, who started this project in

2009. With the help of Jeffrey Deitch, Tony was able to select artists that were

experts in the street art

genre. “We have strived for a diverse representation of both American and international artists that encompasses everything from the

old school graffiti artists to the newest work being created around the world. The project has truly evolved into what my friend Jeffrey Deitch calls a Museum of the Streets,” said Tony Goldman.

The Wynwood Walls project has made quite a statement that Tony has added “Wynwood Doors” and “Outside the Walls.” These other outside galleries complement the original work done. The “Wynwood Doors” is adjacent to “Wynwood Walls;” it displays an inner-city scheme and is mainly

an homage to early American writers. The doors are a variety of metal roll-down gates covering over 3,000 sq. ft. “Outside the Walls” is a group of art work in selective areas around the Walls and Doors. They will be featured around the local neighborhoods.

“The Wynwood Walls” isn’t complete without The Wynwood Kitchen and Bar, this restaurant is a perfect blend of innovative Latin-influenced cuisine and beautiful art. It’s destined to be one of the coolest and most visually striking

restaurants in the nation. Offering a variety of flavorful small plates and the freedom to mix and match dishes, you can also coordinate meals to satisfy personal palates. Boca Raton native Heide Lindgren is a famous model who is currently using her time to help change the world. About 884 million people in the world do not have access to safe water. The plan is to raise enough awareness and money to bring filtered water to places in Africa like Burkina Faso.

Models 4 Water (which is a non-profit organi-zation) will be sponsoring the 2012 Model Beach Volleyball Tournament on March 31 - April 1 here in South Florida. Heide Lindgren, along with other well-known models, will be attending. All proceeds will go to the project. Come out, help change the world, and have fun!

Lindgren, along with fellow model Georgie Badiel, have co-founded a charity called Models 4 Water. They got together with “The Water Project” which is the biggest program trying to bring clean water to different countries. They all came up with the idea to make and sell t-shirts on a website for $20, as well as allowing donations to be given.

Committed to the explosion of electronic music, The Electric Love Foundation is an electronic music company starting a cancer benefits concert series. They are dedicated to organizing and hosting the biggest char-ity raves in the country. They are centered on harnessing the love of music and dance to change the world, one show at a time. These shows will allow fans to unite with art-ists using the music that we love to fight can-cer and find a cure. They’re calling it a revo-lution for electronic music and rave for the cure! All profits from tickets and merchandise sales during the Electric Love Revolution Tour will go to benefit cancer patients and can-cer research. They were created in August of 2011 on the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, Florida. Electronic music is music that employs

electronic instruments and electronic tech-nology in its production. It is also known as house, techno, and dub step. You have mousers, ravers, and electro heads. Miami, Florida is currently the heart of electronic music. Miami holds the biggest music festival of the year, Ultra Fest. Electronic music is rap-idly growing and it’s absolutely amazing that students choose to share their love of music with charities and benefit others.

Their first Miami date was February 17th, 2012. It was the Electric Love Valentine’s River Rave hosted at Finnegan’s River in Mi-ami, Florida. Tickets were $25 and included artists: Crowd Control, Alex Owens, Bass Barbies and DBT. The profits from this event were specifically donated to their affiliate the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Cen-ter. This was the first of many local events to come from the Electric Love Productions team. The Electronic Love Foundation is not just about electronic music, they’re about uniting young people in a common experi-ence.

Miami Beach International Fashion Week is right around the corner and is al-ready the talk amongst fashionistas. MIFW has been distinguished amongst other fash-ion show productions due to its assortment of designers from North, South, and Central Americas, as well as Europe, the Middle East, Canada, Asia and the Caribbean. It has garnered international attention within the fashion and corporate worlds, securing sponsorships from major multi-national com-panies and media partners from around the world. In 2011, MIFW hosted 55 designers from 32 countries, 650 international media outlets, and received over 740 million global media impressions worldwide.

Beth Sobol, founder and creator of MIFW has been an international fashion model for many of the world’s top fash-ion houses in the U.S., Europe, South America, and the Far East, as well as a fashion show producer for over 25 years. She has worked in more than 30 countries gaining broad experience while devel-oping professional and personal relationships. She has been a judge in the 2001 Miss Colombia pageant in Cartagena, Colombia where she was presented with the Key to the City. She was also a judge in the 2004 Miss Universe pageant in Quito, Ecuador. She has also been noted as one of the 50 Most Powerful People in Miami by Reel Life Magazine and named as one of the Top

25 Influencers in Florida by General Motors Corporation.

Miami International Fashion Week takes place in Mid-March and consists of 4 days. During those 4 days, numerous de-signers from all over the world are brought to showcase their designs and are judged based on quality, uniqueness and details. The benefit for designers is that they are classified within their own category and level. Other competitions held are: Fashion Student Competition, Emerging Designer Competition, Jewelry Designer Competition and the Student Fashion Photography Com-petition. Notable figures have been spotted at these events such as Gloria Estefan and Maria Celeste.

Miami International Fashion Week continues to grow as the years pass by.

The next big step for MIFW’s global expansion is to add a trade show component. The other expan-sions that has taken place was the Miami Beach International Bridal Week which launched last year in

November. The great thing about MIFW is that it’s considered the gate-

way to the Americas and Europe for many designers all over the world. Another

great thing was that in 2010, Mayor Tomas Regalado of the City of Miami presented Beth with a proclamation naming Miami International Fashion Week as the City’s of-ficial fashion week.
