Don’t Forget the Kids this Holiday Season!

Salons Are a Cut Above for Supporting Teens Fighting Cancer

Dear Friends,

Our most recent newsletter stressed the notion that all children deserve to enjoy the warm breezes of summer, to play outdoors amidst the smell of fresh-cut grass and blooming flowers. Similarly, every child should have an opportunity to experience the pure joy of the holiday season. A smile on the face of a child opening a gift during the holidays is priceless.

For that reason, we ask you, our donors who believe in our mission, to support children and teens fighting cancer by donating a new toy or gift during our upcoming Holiday Toy Drive season. Any and all age-appropriate toys or gifts for children from toddlers to teens are welcomed (NO stuffed animals, please!).

Each year I am amazed by the fact that so many generous individuals and organizations—local schools, churches, businesses and communities—are able to provide enough toys as a result of our holiday drives to directly benefit children and teens at each of our Children’s Cancer Treatment Centers nationwide.

I am also pleased to announce that the Treasure Chest Foundation reached another major milestone with the recent opening of our 52nd Treasure Chest Program at Cleveland Clinic Children’s and Pediatric Institute in Cleveland, OH. This Treasure Chest Program—sponsored by Foundation Board Member Herb Walker and his wife Jan—will provide our services to more than 600 brave young Cleveland area cancer patients each month. A glimpse at any of our recent publications will confirm Herb’s reliability and endless generosity. A case in point: this past summer Herb and Jan loaded a newly constructed Treasure Chest and hundreds of toys into their van and personally delivered them to a Children’s Cancer Treatment Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a significant contribution since our shipping costs continue to skyrocket.

Each new Treasure Chest Program makes a tremendous impact by providing comfort and enhancing the lives of children and teens who are faced with the adversity of battling cancer. This newest Program reminds me that we are truly blessed to have your ongoing and generous support. Thanks to caring people like you, we now serve more than 13,000 young cancer patients in 19 states across the nation every month and we continue to grow.

In closing, I once again urge you to remember our little ones. Please help make this holiday season a special, magical time of year by contributing to the success of our upcoming Holiday Toy Drives. Thank you in advance for your tremendous support, and may you have a happy and healthy holiday!

Thirty-six years ago, Jennifer Vancura was diagnosed with liver cancer at the age of one. Thirty-seven years later, Jennifer’s mom, Nancy Meyer, the Manager of Durbins in Evergreen Park, continues to give back to the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation by hosting an annual Durbins Cares event. Even though Jennifer never benefitted from the Treasure Chest Foundation’s services, Nancy remembers the pain of having a child battle cancer for many years and wants to help others.

The restaurant and bar sponsored its seventh annual Durbins Cares event on Saturday, October 15 and raised $3,744 for the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation. During the past seven years the Durbins Cares event has raised an impressive $24,244 to benefit the Treasure Chest Foundation and brave young cancer patients.

Durbins Manager Nancy Meyer said, “Cancer hit my family when my daughter Jennifer was diagnosed with cancer. Every year more and more people are lost to cancer. Durbins cares and I care. I love helping out and when cancer hits someone really close, you want to get involved with organizations like the Treasure Chest Foundation that help kids with cancer.”

Durbins Cares for Kids with Cancer a Tremendous Success

On October 7, Taps Pub on South Cicero Avenue in Oak Forest hosted a Taps Cares for Kids with Cancer event which included free food and live musical entertainment. The festivities also featured drink specials, a split-the-pot raffle and over 30 raffle baskets that raised more than $2,160 for the Treasure Chest Foundation. Taps Pub Owner Michelle Fugiel dedicated the event to the memory of her niece, Alyssa Marie Kent, who passed away at age 17 after her battle with leukemia. During the past four years the Taps Cares event has raised an impressive $17,660 to benefit the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation.

“I remember going to the hospital with Alyssa Marie and seeing all the chil-dren going through treatment,” said Michelle. “These children deserve to smile, and the Treasure Chest Foundation helps that happen.”

The St. Francis Xavier Catholic Women’s Club in La Grange gave to children and teens fighting cancer by hosting a party titled “Toys for Tyler’s Community Birthday Party.” The event was held in memory of Tyler Duelm, a childhood cancer patient who lost his battle and who is continually remembered in the La Grange community for courage in the face of tremendous adversity. This is the 11th year the community has come together for this event.

When the Community Birthday Party was over, hundreds of toys, $350 in gift cards and $780 had been collected for the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation, the organization that supported Tyler Duelm during his radiation treatment in 2006. Since its inception this popular event has raised more than $9,000 and thousands of toys for children and teens fighting cancer.

Five local hairstyling salons including Salon Evangelos in Orland Park, Charles Morris Salon in New Lenox, and three Jeffrey LaMorte Salon and Day Spas located in Frankfort, Orland Park and Lemont are a cut above when it comes to supporting teens fighting cancer. Each year the salons host an annual day of education and donate proceeds to a charity.

When the group learned the Treasure Chest Foundation needed gifts for teens undergoing cancer treatment, they held collections at their respective salons. The dream team then entered The Wella Cares Contest and was awarded $5,000 by Hairdressers at Heart for their charitable efforts in the community on behalf of the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation. The $5,000 donation will directly benefit thousands of teens served by the Foundation.

When asked about the teen drive, Salon Evangelos Owner Vance Theodore said, “We have been involved with several charitable events. When we talked to our customers we realized everyone’s life is affected by cancer, including mine. We wanted to help teens fighting cancer.”

“The Treasure Chest Foundation resonates with all of us,” said Jeffrey LaMorte Salon and Day Spa of Lemont Owner Jason LaMorte. “As parents, we cannot imagine what the families are going through.”

Divine Providence Church in Westchester celebrated the spirit of giving during their twelfth annual Christmas in July toy drive to benefit the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation. Parishioners collected over 1,200 toys, gifts for teens, $175 in gift cards and $200 to help children and teens fighting cancer.

Divine Providence Church toy drive Chairwoman Eileen Gorski said, “Just to see the children smile is reward enough. That’s all the motivation we need.” Parishioner Carol Kubala added, “I enjoy shopping for the kids and contributing to our Christmas in July toy drive. It gives us a good feeling.”

The Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation was recently awarded two large treasure chests thanks to the tireless work of Orland Park residents Gordon McGregor and Jim Gira. Gordon organized, implemented and coordinated the construction project while Foundation volunteer Jim provided the wood, hardware and supplies to complete the project.

The Treasure Chest Foundation is especially grateful to Gordon and Jim for their tremendous donation. Because of their hard work and generosity Cleveland Clinic Children’s and Pediatric Institute in Cleveland, Ohio became the recipient of one of the new, beautifully handcrafted treasure chests.

For 11 consecutive years, La Grange teenager Crofton Kelly provided a generous helping hand to kids with cancer by organizing, implementing and coordinating a local tennis tournament designed to raise funds to benefit the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation. Last year Crofton Kelly laid down his racquet and passed along the job of coordinating the Tennis Fun Fest to his sister, Mattigan Kelly. All proceeds benefited the Orland Park-based non-profit organization which provides comfort and distraction from painful procedures to children and teens diagnosed with cancer by providing a toy, gift or gift card in 52 hospitals nationwide.

The 12th Annual Tennis Fun Fest recently drew participation by more than 125 children and some professionals at the Hinsdale Racquet Club. The popular event featured round robin matches, fun-drills, raffles, refreshments and prizes and ultimately raised $9,400 to benefit children fighting cancer. Overall, Crofton and Mattigan's amazing efforts have netted more than $62,650 over the course of the fundraising event’s existence.

“Mattigan’s enormous gift, as always, is especially appreciated,” said Foundation CEO and Founder Colleen Kisel. “The annual fundraising efforts will again help make it possible for hundreds of young children and teens battling cancer to receive toys and gift cards. I am so impressed when I think about what these two caring young individuals have achieved.”

Mattigan described her reasons for helping the Treasure Chest Foundation and young cancer patients by saying, “I really like helping people and this is a wonderful way to do it. It's been real fun organizing this event.”

Alison Kelly, Mattigan’s Mom, was also pleased with the amazing turnout and response from the Tennis Fun Fest participants, saying, “I am excited that Mattigan wants to combine her passion of playing tennis along with serving others to help kids who are battling cancer. I am very proud of her. It was our biggest turnout ever!”

52nd Treasure Chest Program at Cleveland Clinic Children’s and Pediatric Institute

We are pleased to announce that the Treasure Chest Foundation reached another major milestone with the recent opening of our 52nd Treasure Chest Program at Cleveland Clinic Children’s and Pediatric Institute in Cleveland, OH.

This Treasure Chest Program, sponsored by Foundation Board Member Herb Walker and his wife Jan, will provide our services to more than 600 brave young Cleveland area cancer patients each month. This is only the second time in the 21-year history of the Foundation that a Treasure Chest Program has ever been sponsored.

This rare and much-appreciated Program sponsorship, which included Herb's tremendous donation of $10,000, is consistent with the generous support he displays throughout the year. “I joined the Treasure Chest Foundation Board to help raise money to support the ongoing operations and to add new treatment centers for providing toys to young cancer patients,” explains Herb. “Now that the Cleveland Clinic Treasure Chest is open, I look forward to sponsoring another treatment center and Program next year.”

Each new Treasure Chest Program makes a tremendous impact by providing comfort and enhancing the lives of children and teens who are faced with the adversity of battling cancer. This newest Program reminds us that we are truly blessed to have your ongoing and generous support.

Thanks to caring people like you, we now serve more than 13,000 young cancer patients in 19 states across the nation every month and we continue to grow. Because each cancer patient typically visits the clinic multiple times per month, our services actually support young cancer patients upwards of 20,000 times a month.

This boy knows that because of the Treasure Chest, his cancer treatments will be a little easier.

From the look of this young man’s smile, we think he can get used to receiving gift cards

after every visit to the Treasure Chest.

The beautiful new Treasure Chest and toys are just waiting for the celebration to begin!

The Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing comfort and distraction from painful procedures to children and teens who have been diagnosed with cancer by providing gifts from a treasure chest.

The Foundation supports over 13,000 children and teens each month who are diagnosed with cancer and treated at one of 52 cancer treatment centers in the United States. Because each cancer patient typically visits the clinic multiple times per month, the Foundation’s services actually support young cancer patients upwards of 20,000 times a month.

The Foundation depends on contributions of money, toys and gifts through private and corporate donations.
