The 5th TravelTelly Magazine is a fact. Even though it is a challenge to publish

this magazine when we’re also traveling and filming around the world, we love

to share our (and your) photos/videos and stories about this beautiful world.

We share cool travel apps and travel gear and give colleague travel photo/

videographers a place to showcase their work. To become a group of passionate

travelers who capture this beautiful world, that is one of our missions. That is

why we’ve updated the TravelTelly website, to start our own community where

fellow photographers and videographers can meet each other. Be inspired by

the videos of others, read interviews and discover travel film equipment or

showcase your own work on our website.

In this issue we describe our own experience of filming wildlife in Africa and

we have an interesting interview with the people behind StoryTravelers, who

make amazing travel videos with personal stories behind it, that you definitely

have to check out.

In TravelTelly Magazine we would also like to share your own travel photos and

videos or personal travel stories, so feel free to contact us and we will see what

we can do to collaborate with you.

Safe and happy travels!

Africa has a special place in my heart. I’ve already visited this continent 5

times and still I’m impressed by the country’s natural beauty and the truly

lovely people and their amazing culture. The smiles of the locals and the

colorful culture when I filmed in the Masai Mara NR, which is also one of

the most impressive places to photograph/film wildlife on this planet, all

bring back good memories.

Tarangire national Park (Tanzania)

Tarangire National Park is the 6th largest

national park in Tanzania after Ruaha, Serengeti,

Mikumi, Katavi and Mkomazi. The national park

is located in the Manyara Region. The name of the park

comes from the Tarangire river that crosses through the park, which is also

the only source of water for wildlife during the dry season. Filming elephants

was easy in Tarangire NP. Elephants are one of my favorite animals. They are

so big and impressive, which makes me feel small as a human and makes

me realize how incredible these animals are. Seeing young baby elephants in

a large herd is awesome to see and capture and we we’re also lucky enough

to see a large group of elephants crossing the Tarangir river.

In Addo Elephant Park in South Africa, I made one of my best shots of a large group of

elephants arriving. Every time I see this video a big smile appears on my face, watch

the video and you’ll understand why.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area

(NCA) is a UNESCO World Heritage site

located 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha,

in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania.

In this wide open area with wildlife

you will mostly see zebras and

wildebeest. The highlight of filming at

the Ngorongoro for me was capturing a

very old elephant. His skin had so much

lines and wrinkles, it reminded me of a

person at an older age. So impressive

to see and film and photograph. The

Mara Region is home to the Serengeti

National Park, one of the world’s most

famous national parks. Listed as a

World Heritage site, the national park

occupies a vast area of grasslands and

woodlands and is home to a diverse

range of wildlife. Approximately

150,000 tourists visit the park every

year. Serengeti is home to more than a

million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and

300,000 Thomson’s gazelles. Next to

standard tourist opportunities, the park

also offer some eco friendly tours. the

name ‘Serengeti’ comes from a word

used by the Masai to describe the area,

siringet, which means ‘the place where

the land runs on forever’.

Masai Mara is known as Africa’s greatest

wildlife reserve, situated in southwest

Kenya. Famous for the abundance of

lions, the ‘great migrations’ and the

Masai. The park stretches over an area

of app. 1,510 sq km (580 sq miles). It’s

situated about 270 km from the capital

city of Nairobi and takes about 5-6

hours by road or 40-45 minutes by air.

BEST TIME TO VISIT The ‘great

wildebeest migration’ starts around

July until October, this is the best time

to see this incredible movement of

wildlife. Although it is not guaranteed

that the wildebeest get to Masai Mara,

the migration hasn’t let us down so far.

December to February are also great

months to visit the park as it is dryer,

though most wildebeest as well as

zebras will be in the Serengeti by then.

I filmed a conservation project in

the Masai Mara for the volunteer

organization ‘African Impact’.

Conservation is very important to keep

the balance between tourism and the

Masai tribe that lives there as well as

the unique wildlife. For me, this project

is still one of my favorites, as it was

incredible to be able to visit the Masai

tribe and to film this incredible wildlife

conservation project. Read more about

Let the animals be wildlife

People nowadays, are willing to do

so much to take a photo or video of

wildlife, but I think it’s important

that we remember the fact that we

are guests in the national parks we

visit . Don’t expect too much when

it comes to seeing ‘the big five’. Too

many tourists are stressing out, when

booking a tour, about seeing ‘the

big five’. If you expect to see things

like that, please visit a zoo. Going

to a national park is visiting nature

without any expectations and without

knowing what will happen. We have to

keep in mind that the ‘wild’ in wildlife

is there for a reason, you never know

what to expect and that is the beauty

of nature. I think no one wants to turn

the world into a zoo. Seeing these

animals up-close in the wild, is one of

the most amazing things that we can

experience in this world.

The hunt on animals and especially the

hunt on rhinos makes me sad. But this

kind of news makes me very happy and

positive: Drone enters the war against

rhino poachers Read more here

Get a private driver/guide. This is more expensive

but this way you will get more time to film and

photograph, instead of being in a hurry because the

group you’re with has to see ‘the big 5’. We photo/

videographers know that taking a nice shot will

take time and when you do have more time you will

also enjoy the moment more.

By letting your driver/guide know that you like to

have some more time, helps you shoot your perfect

video or photograph, because the driver will make a

shorter round. This way you will have more time at

the places you do visit .

Do a night drive to see and capture wildlife in their

natural surroundings, you have a better chance of

seeing them in the morning and at the end of the day.

Making a night drive with a guide can create some

awesome night wildlife shots. During the night, a

completely new world of wildlife wakes up and gets

active. Get your camera and lens ready that shoot the

best pictures in a dark environment. Of course with

a night drive the guide shows you the wildlife with

a flashlight, but even then be prepared for low light

conditions.

Enjoy the wildlife out there!

Take a short walk to Lake

Matheson and capture the perfect

photograph/video of snow-capped

Mount Cook reflected in the dark

waters.

Lake Matheson is near the Fox

Glacier in South Westland, New

Zealand. The lake is famous for its

reflected views of Aoraki/Mount

Cook and Mount Tasman. On a clear

day the reflection is breathtaking.

The view is most beautiful during

early mornings and the afternoon,

and of course this is also the best

time to take your photos and videos.

Long finned native eels thrive in the

darkness of Lake Matheson, which is

also home to many water birds. For

this reason the lake is a traditional

mahinga kai (food gathering place)

for Maori people. Lake Matheson

was formed about 14,000 years

ago, when the Fox Glacier retreated

from its last major advance towards

the sea and left a depression which

later filled with water.

The walk from the car park takes

40 minutes to the pontoon, or 1.5

hours around the lake.

An interview with StoryTravelersCan you explain to us what StoryTravelers entails?

Storytravelers is a small network (tribe) of visual storytelling artists with a shared

passion for genuine travel experiences. We work together in changing formations

on projects for travel destinations that want to tell their story in a genuine and

dynamic way: that is, we go and live a travel experience, capture it and tell about it

with a personal interpretation..

How did you come up with the idea behind StoryTravelers?

It started of with an idea to embed visual bloggers in eco lodges all over the world.

That evolved into complete visual story campaigns for tourism boards.

18 TravelTelly.com

Page 19: TravelTelly Magazine issue 5

Can you tell us something about your background as a filmmaker?

Well, funny enough, I haven’t followed any relevant study or course. I’ve

developed myself completely autodidact with the help of the wonder world of

internet and of course a lot of trying. I studied social cultural sciences and ended

up working in the direct marketing and sales, managing a business unit. At a

certain stage I reached the end of my inspiration and felt the urge to create and

to develop something myself. I left the company context, to travel from Cape

Town to Nairobi alone to subsequently start an adventure called “my own life”.

An interchange project for entrepreneurs called Erasmus, brought me to Italy,

where I still live (already two years). Luckily I appeared to have a talent for film

making and made a steep growth in just 2 years. Photography I’ve always been in

to, that was actually a clear sign.

How did you meet and choose your fellow filmmakers at StoryTravelers?

Some approached us, or we met somewhere, online, offline .. quite organically

actually. It’s rather a network where like minded and independent filmmakers,

but also photographers and bloggers can create together.

19TravelTelly.com

Page 20: TravelTelly Magazine issue 5

What is the main focus of StoryTravelers?

We make videos about living a travel destination in an genuine and intense way.

Meeting locals, trying new things, making contact, cultures. One that watches

our videos will live a condensed experience through our eyes. There’s much to

tell about the style. The videos are made with some important values and

focus points in mind, here are a few: Spontaneity: our footage is captured in

unprogrammed situations, that make our stories spontaneous. The editing is

also a completely open and free process that makes room to get freestyle videos

with a strong artistic component. Shareability: it’s important that people

consider the videos worthwhile sharing, with other words that have a certain

viral component, that make the story travel partly by it self online. To make sure a

video is shareable, they should be remarkable, understandable, cause an emotion

and tell a story. Storytelling: There’s always, explicitly or implicitly, some sort of a

story to discover: characters, a plot, a container with a start and an end. Not just a

compilation of images that bore easily. In that way the videos get more engaging,

Impact editing: we edit videos in a very dynamic way, with an important place

for sound and music, all videos are professionally color graded.

‘Dive deep into new experiences’

What do you want to accomplish with StoryTravelers?

I’d like to create visual stories with positive social impact with likeminded independent

people that follow their heart. Doing what you like to do and be self sustaining and

being able to work independent of place: Travel is great to tell about, but in the future

I’d like to focus also on positive impact and change in other settings.

What is your favorite video that StoryTravelers produced and why?

The latest video which is published on vimeo.com/62443473 (the video is

not online yet, but just for the readers of TravelTelly Magazine we’ve made an

exception and you can watch the video as a sneak preview: the password is ‘love’).

It’s an intense video that I made of our journey through the province of Ferrara, Italy.

It contains a lot of my own emotions and refers metaphorically to other important

themes in life, like having the freedom and courage to follow your own path.

Why should people watch StoryTraveler’s videos?

Because you might get inspired to travel and dive deep into new experiences :)

A video is like a little present that stimulates the senses and emotions.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about StoryTravelers?

We’re not an agency, but we are independent talented people connected by a shared

passion. We believe that we arrived in an era in which we are ready for new more

organic ways accomplishing things together: Creating with people that are living their

legend, which means that you follow your passion and do what you’re good at. All

driven by the inner need to create and flourish with positive impact.

Alpaca facts

1. Did you know that alpacas are part of the camel family? They are close related

to llamas.

2. Did you know that alpacas are primarily found in Bolivia and Peru?

Approximately 3 million alpacas live in the Andes mountain range, around the

city of Cuzco, as they prefer higher areas. Some smaller alpaca groups are also

found in Chile and Ecuador.

3. Did you know that traditional Bolivian and Peruvian clothing is usually made

of alpaca wool? Alpaca wool is water-repellent and very warm. The locals also use

alpacas as pets, for their meat and as a tourist attraction.

TORONTO

1. The CN Tower is a big part of what makes the skyline of Toronto so different

from any other skyline. This icon is a special building that you will want to capture from

all kind of different angles and places. From the bottom, from far away and definitely

from the top. Also in the evening the CN Tower is even more beautiful to film, when it

shows its cool lights. For more information visit: www.cntower.ca

2. Toronto island Take the ferry to the Toronto Island park. From there you can make

a good shot of the Toronto skyline. And let your camera roll on the way back to the city,

because from the ferry you can also take some cool shots of the skyline again.

Toronto is a large metropolitan city

in Canada, but doesn’t feel like that

at all. There’s enough space to take

photos and videos. Be aware of the

time you are planning on visiting

the city, because it can be very cold

during winter time, which doesn’t

make photographing or filming any

easier. The low crime rate in Toronto

has resulted in the city having a

reputation as one of the safest major

cities in North America. So, a perfect

city to capture with your expensive

camera equipment.

3. Harbor front A neighborhood on the northern shore of Lake Ontario within the

downtown core of the city. From here you can take some nice city shots as well as from

the harbor itself, with the Amsterdam bridge. A series of free concerts is staged at

Harbor front’s outdoor concert stage every weekend throughout the summer and in

winter there is a free open-air ice rink.

4. Nathan Phillips Square Located in front of the City Hall, Nathan Phillips Square is a

landmark in the centre of the city. During the summer the square is in motion daily, with

people watching concerts and dance performances, viewing art at outdoor exhibitions.

The Nathan Phillips Square is a nice place where many local people and tourists relax at,

surrounded by government buildings. Around the square you will see a boulevard, which

is situated a little higher, so it makes a perfect place for you to take photos/videos.

5. Downtown Toronto Taking the subway in Toronto is easy, especially when you

want to go to different places in the city. We experienced that it is also one of the

cleanest subways in the world. Some nice urban places to capture include: the Hockey

Hall of Fame; housed in a former bank erected in 1885, little Italy; one of the city’s oldest

extant ethnic neighborhoods, University College at the University of Toronto; a beautiful

building to capture.

Eco project of the Month

Read more here

Las Vegas, USA is probably the last place you would think about when it comes to eco friendly projects. Given, Vegas is one of the most eco unfriendly cities in the world, because of its many (24 hour) casinos, hotels, never-ending traffic and it is one of the largest consumers of food and drinks. But even this over-the-top city is trying to contribute a little and agreed for an environmental designer to start an eco friendly project near ‘the entertainment capital of the world’.

The Morrow Royal Pavilion was completed in 2012 and designed by Scott McCombs, owner of Realm of Design. He had the great idea of using discarded beer bottles of the casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, to build a huge pavilion. Over 500,000 beer bottles were crushed into GreenStone material, to use as bricks. This is also the reason why you would never know that the Pavilion is made out of beer bottles, because the GreenStone looks like normal sandstone bricks. It took about one year to complete the building. It has prevented thousands of beer bottles from heading to the junk yard and saved a space of eight football fields.

Capturing history! Prague is a beautiful

city trip destination. Walking through

Prague is a pleasure with all the

historical buildings surrounding you.

There are so many interesting places

found in this city, which all make you

must-have that photo or video.

Charles Bridge

Probably one of the most famous bridges found

in Europe, is the Charles bridge; which crosses the

Vltava river in Prague. It’s a beautiful bridge to take

photos/videos from at different sides. The Charles

bridge is a busy place, where many local people

pass by and is definitely a touristic highlight. Part

of the fact that this bridge is so beautiful and

popular, are the 30 baroque statues situated on

the balustrade. So don’t forget to walk over the

bridge and capture these statues.

Prague Castle

Prague Castle is the biggest castle in the world

(according to Guinness Book of Records; the

biggest ancient castle) at about 570 meters

in length and an average of about 130 meters

wide. The way to the castle is uphill, so it’s a

bit of a hike with your camera gear and tripod

but it is worth it. In and around the castle you

have many spots where you can take a photo

or video from. You’re not finished quickly at

this place, because there is so much beautiful

history to capture like the St. Vitus Cathedral.

The castle buildings represent virtually every

architectural style of the last millennium.

The Prague Castle includes Gothic St. Vitus

Cathedral, Romanesque Basilica of St. George,

a monastery and several palaces, gardens

and defense towers.

Old Town Square

surrounded by historical buildings, the old

town square brings you back into a historic

scene and is the perfect place to make some

busy tourist shots and capture a lively scene

of people in a historic setting. On a cloudy day

you could make some cool time lapse videos

of the historic buildings and the moving

clouds.

Petrin Lookout Tower

The Petrin Lookout Tower is a 63.5

meter high steel framework tower.

According to some people it resembles

strongly to the Eiffel Tower in Paris,

but for us this wasn’t a must-see. It is

surrounded by trees and it isn’t very

big, so taking a video of this tower

wasn’t so interesting. We also didn’t

take any shots from the view at the

top, because we didn’t feel like this

shot would be that incredible. We did

love taking photos and videos from

the park around it . We were in Prague

around summertime and the city had

a lovely atmosphere, with tourists as

well as local people enjoying the great

weather around these stunning old

streets.

Chinmoy Kumar Ghose, also known

as Sri Chinmoy, was a Bengali artist,

religious teacher and poet who

immigrated to the U.S. in 1964

and is the founder of the religious

organization “Sri Chinmoy Centre

Church, Inc.”, better known as “Sri

Chinmoy Centre”. A well-deserved

statue of Chinmoy stands close to

the Vltava river and next to the Kamp

museum. From the statue you have a

different and nice view of the Charles

bridge and the city. From here you can

really think about where you are and

enjoy the moment.

capture. All the city’s tourist attractions

are in walking distance and make Prague

a must-visit city trip in Europe!

Giant Baby Sculptures

The sculptures by David Cerný, a Czech sculptor, are a must-see for

everyone who wants to have a bit of fun on their city trip. His ‘giant

babies’ climb the exterior of the Žižkov Television Tower and are also

found outside of the Kampa museum.

Take your time, walk around and enjoy the beauty of this historical city

There’s nothing more satisfying than coming home after having traveled to some

amazing places and discovering that you’re landscape photographs captured

everything in the same way that you experienced it. This is not always the case though,

as sometimes the weather conditions weren’t great or you didn’t use the right angle

or camera settings.

‘The ultimate field guide to landscape photography’ helps you to photograph

landscapes in the best possible way. It explains everything from light to composition,

from seascapes to rainy days and from which camera and settings to use to editing

your photos on the computer. The book also gives advice from National Geographic

photographers in the field and shows many examples of photographs where the right

light, composition and elements were used.

This is the perfect book for amateur as well as professional (landscape) photographers,

as everyone could learn new things and use the advice of experienced photographers.

The size of this book is really handy. It’s not heavy and you can easily bring it with you

while traveling. The amount of information it gives will surprise you.

Even though TravelTelly is all about traveling as

cheap as possible and above all experiencing

new cultures, it would be nice for once, to go

on a luxurious trip. Our dream journey for a

luxurious trip would be a really chic, stunning

and relaxed safari in Africa. Often you see

pictures of safaris with people sleeping in huge tents, with actual beds and private butlers.

Many travel agencies around Africa offer these type of luxury safaris, but the agency we

would like to book our holiday with is &Beyond. &Beyond offers a couple of luxury safaris

throughout Africa, but our favorite one would be staying at the Kichwa Tembo Masai Mara

Tented Camp in the Masai Mara reserve, Kenya and of course during the Great Migrations.

This way you have the best of both worlds, the most spectacular sight of thousands of

wildebeest and zebras as well as relaxing at the end of the day in your luxurious tent.

Overview by &Beyond

Located where the riverine forest meets the sweeping plains in the path of the awe-inspiring

Great Migration, the camp provides an authentic dose of African wilderness, delivered with

legendary Kenyan hospitality. Kichwa Tembo is renowned for its gracious teams of Kenyan

staff whose warm welcome, charming service and effortless energy delight guests from

all over the world. Classic safari interiors illuminated by soft lantern light open up onto

majestic African landscapes. Each suite offers an en suite bathroom with stone shower,

flagstone floors, soft lighting and separate toilet. Spacious private verandas provide a

shady viewpoint onto the magnificent grasslands or the wooded banks of the Sabaringo

River and the passing wildlife. Hammocks strung in the grounds or around the gracious

swimming pool invite you for an afternoon nap.

Price tag

The costs for such a luxury safari range between $360,- and $450,- per person per night,

including your meals and safaris. for more info: www.andbeyondafrica.com
