Indonesia as well as one of the major holiday destinations for international tourists. The island is located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying

Denpasar is the capital and most populous city of Bali.

The vast majority of the Balinese people are Hindu so there are a significant number of temples on the island. Temple or Pura in

Indonesian is the place for worship, and the biggest,

most important and holiest temple in Bali is the Mother

Temple of Besakih.

Bali has a tropical climate all year with average temperature of 31

degrees Celsius and two different seasons. Dry

season is between May

and September with high humidity and wet season is between October andApril

with low humidity. From June to August, the weather is usually nice, breezy and

cool.

The main language is Indonesia, however being one of the most favourite holiday destinations in

the world, not only many people speak English but also other foreign

languages such as French, Japanese, Chinese,

Germany.

MASTER OF (SHADOW) PUPPET

“Originally introduced to the Javanese traditional art of ancient era, Wayang is a theatrical puppet

show carrying important artistic values and considered as an act of religious ritual.”

AROUNDBALI

Page 19: Traveler october'15 scoop

19TRAVELER

The origin of ‘Wayang’ show can be traced back to an inscription dated 930 CE which says ‘si Galigi mawayang’

or " Galigi played wayang". Other than that, historian and scientist still couldn’t tell for sure what influenced the shadow puppet show in Indonesia. Javanese people have been assimilating the act so well it becomes one of their

acknowledged identities.

Wayang is operated by a ‘Dalang’ or puppet master, who will use puppets made from cow hide and bamboo stick, fluidly bring them around to live with his voice and hand movement. Dalang requires several kinds of talents and

stamina, as he must be able to depict hundreds of stories, play the music with voice, have a flair for showmanship, perform the necessary sacred rituals, and they must also

know how to make their own puppets.

In Bali, Wayang shows are done occasionally on big ceremonies to entertain the audiences. It is a great cultural vessel which embodies the myth and morality play of good versus evil, as both are necessary parts that forms balance

in Balinese Hindu beliefs.

OTHER SIDE OF PARADISEMainstream tourists often

associate Kuta with Bali, but the more adventurous ones, mainly surfers, know another area on its neighboring island that bear the same name. The difference is noticeable though, as Bali’s

Kuta beach assimilates itself with international influence, transforming the whole village into a tourist get-go, filled with lively nightclub, western restaurant, glamorous entertainment, and lifestyle hub.

“The island of Lombok is blessed with natural rugged beauty and one of them, is Kuta. Although share its name with Bali’s legendary coastline, it offers a different kind of vibrant atmosphere.”

Lombok’s Kuta takes a different direction, and is actually an area with several pristine beaches and traditional village. Most of their areas still retain sleepy, natural character as a typical tropic fishing village. The local village people live in housing clusters called ‘kampung’ and are largely unaffected by tourist activities. They mainly sell traditional handmade accessories and outfit, such as Lombok famous ‘Tenun Ikat’ cloth.

It is recommended that you stroll along the dirt road to stumble upon quiet beach with transparent blue-greens saturated water, or watch the sun set beyond the horizon from the adjacent cliff and small mountains formed along the village area, and get the new perspective of tropical caress at Lombok’s New Kuta.

A meaningful travel always sets you in motion, seeking

solace between visiting every spots possible, especially those away from the beaten path. In central Bali, Bangli regency is a landlocked area that features some of the best panorama in the whole island.

The geographic character of Bangli is the main factor that forms its whole area

‘picturesque’ spot. The regency generally stretch along from the central-part of the island up to the Northern side, escalating in height. The view dramatically changes as you explore the road leading to Tampaksiring area of the North and the climate become pleasantly cooler as well.

In Bangli, it is best to expect a close-to-nature kind of

acclaimed spa consultant Mr. Fabrice Garrigues, Acqua Perla Spa interior is a convenient sanctuary uniquely designed with distinctive shapes and suave lighting. There are total of 6 treatment rooms in Acqua Perla, differed into two kinds of capacities; 3 single and 3 double.

As for the treatment, Acqua Perla Spa has one of the most innovative menus ever created for a Spa; sensorial hydro trail. It is a 30 minute detox program consisted of seven different clusters alternating hot and cold hydrotherapy, creatively made resembling a dark funhouse-ride through artificial cave and rainforest. The first part of the session

involve sitting on a chair with built-in water jet to massage the lower-back part of the body, and end with a humorous ‘bucket’ shower. You have to try this program for yourself.

After the amusing water treatment, you can opt to have 1-hour Balinese massage. This menu is commonly found in Spa around the island, but Acqua Perla Spa successfully kept it classy by emphasizing on the technique and palm pressure of the massage, done by talented full-fledge therapist.

As a painter, Andre Yoga’s art is heavily

correlated with other form of art, such as music. He has been drawing sketches since back in high school, and started taking a serious step in painting back in 2013. He admits that music influences his art in significant ways. His creativity and idea can be ignited from anything, ranging from magazine, social media, to surrounding environment.

Andre Yoga’s painting and sketches are based on characters, whether it is fantastical or realistic figures with obvious choice of black and grey palettes. It creates a somewhat surrealist vibrant that emits from his creation. The Denpasar-born lad is blessed with a distinctive talent and taste in drawing. His advanced approach to create ultra-detailed sketches is based on several techniques such as pointillism, dotwork, and other more conventional methods.

For now, Yoga still continues to showcase

his art through collective exhibition while pursuing his dream to have his own outside of Indonesia, exploring the history and art of other countries. You can view his splendid art at www.andre-yoga.com

PRIMATE KINGDOM

Tabanan is a region in West Bali that has been

reknowned as ‘green city’. Here you can found a historical site called Alas Kedaton. Basically a lush small rainforest covering 6 – 7 hectare tucked in the midst

of rice field, Alas Kedaton is a home to thousands of long-tailed macaque—a species of monkey. The forest name is derived from Balinese ancient words ‘Alas’ means ‘forest’ and ‘Kedaton’ means ‘Kingdom’.

“Situated in Marga village, Tabanan, Alas Kedaton is a sacred rainforest and a home to hundreds of

monkeys. It is a must-visit eco-tourism destination in Bali.“

60 TRAVELER

Page 61: Traveler october'15 scoop

The monkeys inhabited Alas Kedaton is considered sacred and very well preserved, but they are rather tame and friendly to tourist, who are allowed to interact directly with the monkeys. But still, extra precaution is recommended, as monkeys have natural interest in small and shiny belongings, and can bite or

scratch if they feel threatened.

In the middle part of the forest area, there is also a grand temple called Pura Alas Kedaton. It is a megalithic Hindu temple relic of ancient times built by a holy priest named Mpu Kuturan around 117b – 1225 AD.

eyes of international tourism. One of those recommended temples is Pura Taman Ayun.

Located at Badung District, about 18 kilometers from the city of Denpasar, Taman Ayun is a grandeous royal temple built by the king of Mengwi at 16th century used as a special place to honor the deified ancestors of Mengwi Dynasty and important gods.

The temple are located in the middle of lush green park,

pass the bridge above broad , fish-filled water canals, highly ornamented outer gate, fountains, and more gardens inside. The outer courtyard of Taman Ayun has a fountain with nine water jets, symbolizing Dewa Nawa Sanga—nine main gods of Balinese Hindu religion. It is amazing how Bali can still keep this wondrous ancient site even after the era of international tourism and modernization.
