Clarkson College Academic Travel Abroad: Israel Feb. 26–March 8, 2014

DAY ONE Wednesday, Feb. 26 Depart Our journey begins as we board our plane to Tel Aviv this morning. IF DAY TWO Thursday, Feb. 27 Tel Aviv Upon arrival at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport our Israeli guide, Opher Rom, will meet us. We then drive to Jaffa, the ancient seaport from which Jonah fled from God, and the city where Peter stayed with Simon the Tanner and restored Tabitha (Dorcas) to life. We then board a motor coach and drive along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. D DAY THREE Friday, Feb. 28 Tel Aviv Today we visit the Hall of Independence, Rothschild Boulevard, and the White City area of Tel Aviv. Then we continue to Caesarea, built by King Herod the Great, where Pontius Pilate lived and where the Gospel was first brought to the Gentiles. We visit the Roman Theater and Aqueduct and Herodian Port. Next we visit Chana Sensh Museum in Kibbutz Sdot Yam. B/D DAY FOUR Saturday, March 1 Sea of Galilee We drive north to visit a local winery to sample Israeli wine. Next we visit the Mound of Megiddo (Har Megiddo in Hebrew), which gave its name to Armageddon (Rev 16:16). After surveying the Plain of Jezreel, we see examples of ancient engineering used to secure water in antiquity. Our last stop is Beth-Shean to visit Israel’s biggest archaeological excavations. B/D DAY FIVE Sunday, March 2 Sea of Galilee Today begins with a stop at Tabgha, the site of Jesus’ multiplication of the loaves and fishes and Peter’s primacy. Next, we visit the Mount of the Beatitudes, site of the Sermon on the Mount. We are reminded of the Clarkson College symbol, the Maltese Cross, and the eight points that represent the Beatitudes. Then we drive to Capernaum, where Jesus lived during His years of ministry and where He chose His first disciples. We visit the remains of an ancient synagogue whose foundations date back to Jesus’ time, as well as Peter’s house. We then drive to the road to Damascus and visit Caesarea Philippi, where Peter made his great confession of faith and where Jesus told of His coming death and resurrection. A visit is then planned for the Golan Heights, the scene of bitter fighting during the Six-Day War. We also enjoy the view of the snowcapped peak of Mount Hermon, the highest mountain in the Middle East. Then we stop at Yardenit, the famous baptismal site at the headwaters of the Jordan River. B/D DAY SIX Monday, March 3 Sea of Galilee Today we drive to Mt. Carmel and Haifa to visit a privately run hospital. We will lunch in a Druze village and continue to Acre, the Crusader city. Returning to the Sea of Galilee, we visit the Museum of Scots hotel that displays photos of the hospital that existed there. B/L/D DAY SEVEN Tuesday, March 4 Jerusalem Today we visit Jenin to witness a diversity of viewpoints working together. We cross into the Palestine-controlled area at the Jalama checkpoint, are welcomed by the mayor, and introduced to the Green Line. Then we walk through the Old City of Jenin. After lunch, we see the Grand Mosque, Saray Souq (Oriental Market),

Burqin, and Church of the Ten Lepers. A visit to a medical facility will help us compare healthcare access in the Palestine-controlled areas. B/L/D DAY EIGHT Wednesday, March 5 Jerusalem This morning we visit Hadassah Medical Center and meet some of its staff. Then we drive to the top of the Mount of Olives to enjoy a breath-taking panoramic view of the Old City and the Kidron Valley. Then it’s a short walk down along the Palm Sunday Way to the Garden of Gethsemane. We cross the Kidron Valley and drive to the top of Mount Zion for a visit to the room of the Last Supper (Cenaculum) and the traditional tomb of King David. We walk along the Armenian and the Jewish Quarters to the Western (Wailing) Wall, Judaism’s holiest site. We have time to shop in the markets and enjoy dinner in a local restaurant. B/D DAY NINE Thursday, March 6 Jerusalem This morning begins at Massada, the winter fortress of King Herod the Great. After ascending the mountain by cable car, we tour the excavated storehouses, baths, and homes of this biblical society which make up one of Israel’s great archaeological treasures. We hear the story of the Jewish Zealots who, in 73 A.D., fought against the Roman legions and their commander, Flavius Silva, and how 965 men, women, and children chose to die rather than submit to the advancing Roman army. Then we drive along Ein Gedi, where David had his famed meeting with King Saul. Finally, we visit Qumran, site of the 1947 discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. B/D DAY TEN Friday, March 7 Jerusalem This morning we begin at Yad Vashem (Holocaust Memorial) to recall lessons in history never to be forgotten. Then we visit the Israel Museum, where we see the Scale Model of the Ancient City of Jerusalem to get an idea of the layout of the ancient biblical city. We also see the Menorah at the Knesset gates. This afternoon we continue on to the Old City of Jerusalem for a visit to the Sisters of Zion Monastery and Ecce Homo (site of Jesus’ scourging), where we see authentic Roman pavement at the Antonia Fortification. Following visits to Saint Anne’s Church and the Pool of Bethesda, we walk through the colorful Arab Bazaar, where the sounds and smells of the Middle East come alive. After a stop at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, we return to our hotel for a farewell dinner. B/D DAY ELEVEN Saturday, March 8 Return Just after midnight we board our plane with a fresh appreciation of Israeli and Palestinian medical practices and Biblical history, new memories to cherish and rich experiences to share.
