What is Travel chart?

• The chart which gives an estimate about the amount of materials handling between various work stations is known as “Travel chart”.

• The aim of travel chart is to decide such layout where overall materials handling function is performed at minimum cost.

• Movement of workers, material & equipment at any time and any workstation is shown numerically by two way matrix.

Page 3: travel chart for plant layout

• Travel chart is square tabular where each column and row represents single work station.

• Construction of travel chart depends on the “from-to” chart. Once the frequency & distance travelled between workstations is meaured, the total distance travelled is placed in terms of each distance travelled.

• According to that change the layout design of the plant with the aim to reduce the total distance travelled.

Page 4: travel chart for plant layout

• As shown in the diagram, here travelling from one station to other is represented as ‘X’.

• So there is high work load on the station no.4, almost from all department.

• So, if the layout is changed in a such reducing the travel distance, then it is possible to reduce travelling cost as well as travelling time

Example:-

• Assume that a plant engaged in manufacture often types of products. the sequence, weight and quantity per of the year of each type of products are given in table. there are nine buildings in the plant. Each building should be center of one operation only.

Solution:-

Page 8: travel chart for plant layout
Page 9: travel chart for plant layout

PROCEDURE:-• Let the nine building be symbolized as A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H and I. all these

building are already constructed, so inter-building distance are fixed. Each building will be a shop for one type of operation only, say for example if we decide to make building as center of drilling them only drilling machines will be housed there.

• The objective is to minimize the quantity ,weight x distance ,i.e number of products x weight-of each product x total distance moved by each for all operation-on it should be minimized. on careful study we noticed that.

Number of products of each variety is fixed Weight of each product is fixed ,therefore to reduce the overall we should try

to reduce the overall distance only.

• Assume that raw material store will be in building A,B will be pattern shop ,c will be foundry shop and so on, is table C. it is an initial tentative layout.

• Calculate the number of products x distance for each of the two variteis I and VIII

• For I, 5000 × 30 × 8 = 15000Kg.m• For VIII, 1500 × 0.4 × 30 = 18000Kg.m• The overall total= 72.31 × 10 5
