Try some naughtybut nice shoppingat festive markets

Now the countdown to Christmas hasbegun, it’s time to start drawing upfestive shopping lists. Make the processmore bearable by visiting one ofEurope’s top Christmas markets, saysPolly Weeks

As a Segway zips past, I almost chokeon my roasted chestnuts when I real-ise who’s behind the wheel. Wearinga red hat and a bushy beard, it’sFather Christmas, who appears tohave left his sleigh and reindeer athome this year.

I’m in Hamburg in December and,as I’m quickly discovering, they don’tcelebrate the festive season quietlyh e re.

Trees twinkle with lights, marketsbustle and there are more than a fewcups of gluhwein going round to keepshoppers happy.

Nuremberg, Cologne and Dresdenmay be the shining stars of Ger-m a ny ’s Christmas markets, but Ham-burg offers the same dose of festivefun, only with fewer tourists.

There are nine main markets tochoose from (most open daily fromNovember 25 – although merrimentbegins with the Hamburg Winterdomon November 8), and a few shorter, charming markets to enjoy if youtime your visit for the correct week-end.

This historical city also has plentyof local attractions to explore – in-cluding the rather bizarre MiniaturWunderland (the world’s largestmodel railway exhibition) and Sub-

marine U-434, a retired Russian spysubmarine now open to tourists.

My base for the weekend is thebeautiful four-star Movenpick Hotel,a converted water tower brimmingwith character and located in theSternschanzenpark area of town. Theview from my bedroom stretches asfar as the eye can see, and I’m almostblinded by the sparkling Christmaslights on the horizon.

I certainly have a serious amount ofChristmas shopping to do!

I head to the Hamburger Dom,North Germany’s biggest funfair, which has been dressed up for Christ-mas. Teenage boys try to impressgirls by jumping on white-knucklerides, adults browse the stalls, andlittle ones look bemused by the oddchoice of festive decorations – a seriesof oversized scarecrows. But in Ham-burg, I’m quickly realising, peoplelike to do things differently.

Nearby, on the Reeperbahn (Ham-bu r g ’s own version of Soho), I find therather unusual Santa Pauli, an“adult” Christmas market selling aselection of erotic gifts. These cer-tainly aren’t the sort of things you’dgive to Granny! There’s a jovial at-mosphere and the grown-ups, sup-ping on their potent drinks, maketheir way indoors to enjoy the “top-less” s h ow s. . .

Instead, I take the opportunity toreturn for a peaceful night’s sleepback at the hotel.

I need my energy for the Ham-burger Weinachtsmarkt, the biggestmarket in the city, located in front ofthe beautiful town hall. Divided intoalleys, the stalls are categorised bythe types of products on offer. OnHandwerksgasse (craftsman alley),expect to find woodcarvers and sil-versmiths, while Naschgasse (thenibble alley) specialises in ediblegifts, and handmade woodenplaythings can be found in theSpielzeuggasse (toy alley). Carriedaway by the upbeat atmosphere, Ileave having purchased far more thanI intended to.

From Weinachtsmarkt, I make myway through to the other city centremarkets; each one leads into another.I head to St Petri Church for morepeaceful sales, then end up at theSpitalerstrasse, where most shopperscome to recover with a hot drink.

I’m here on a Saturday when aweekly Christmas parade makes itsway through the city centre. Fakesnow falls from the floats while hun-dreds of dancers fill the streets. I findit hard to resist joining in.

The following day, I opt for a moreserene Christmas experience. Thefirst weekend in December, St Mi-chaelis Church host their Christmasmarket in the church’s crypts.Homemade jewellery, art, crafts andpreserves are sold beneath the grandvaulted ceiling. But even if you misstheir two-day market, it’s worth vis-iting to climb the church tower andadmire views of the city.

With so many markets to visit, Iknow I won’t have time to see themall. I take advice from the locals andvisit the Gansemarkt, an upmarketfoodie affair, and the Jungfernsteigmarket, which has wonderful viewsof the Binnenalster lake.

But I still find time for a hot chocol-ate back at the Movenpick hotel’srestaurant. As I look out of the giantwindows at the snowflakes falling onthe surrounding woodland, I almostbreak into a festive ditty.

I’m sure I’m not the only one whowhispers to the very hospitable Ham-burg, “Merry Christmas to all, and toall a good night”.

OR TRY THESE ALTERNATIVES

TIVOLI GARDENS, COPENHAGEN,DENMARK The Nordic countriescertainly know how to throw aChristmas market, and Tivoli Gardens inCopenhagen is one of the best. Many ofthe stalls sell both gifts and hot foodand drink, but there are also lots ofother festive attractions on offer. VisitFather Christmas in the PantomimeTheatre, or come and pet reindeer in thepark. Topped with more than a dustingof snow, the place is simply magical.Open November 15-December 31.BRUGES, BELGIUM Bruges is apopular destination for tourists year-round, but it really comes to life duringthe festive season. In addition to thetraditional stalls, there will be an icerink on the market square and, fromNovember 22, a snow and ice sculpture

festival at the railway station square. The city itself is small enough to easilynavigate, making it a great option ifyou’re short on time. Open November22-January 2.LILLE, FRANCE Connected to Londonby the Eurostar, Lille is one of the moreconvenient markets to visit. The first ofthe French Christmas markets to openeach year, it’s located on the PlaceRihour. Expect to find German, Polishand Canadian food specialities for sale, alongside traditional gifts. Visit GrandPlace, where you’ll find a 50m-high bigwheel perfect for looking out over thecity. Want something a little moregentile? The Grand Place square will betransformed into a snow-covered village.Open November 20-December 30.THE DOCKLANDS CHRISTMASMARKET, DUBLIN, IRELAND Carolsinging and Victorian fairground ridesare just a few of the attractions at thisfriendly market, taking place at GeorgesDock. Singing and dancing will takeplace throughout the market season, while punters can grab a drink from abar set up in a vintage 1950s airstream.Open December 12-23.
