OVERVIEWThis course is designed to present advanced instruction for community orthopaedic surgeons on the management of soft tissue trauma, fractures and musculoskeletal injuries from initial evaluation and surgical technique through convalescence and rehabilitation. The target audience includes practicing orthopaedic surgeons, orthopaedic residents, physician assistants and orthopaedic nurses interested in or currently caring for orthopaedic injury patients. Emphasis will be placed on fracture care in the community practice environment.

Participants will be engaged in an interactive format including:Injury modules, case examples, discussions and debates—the presentation of didactic material through injury topics or debates encouraging interactive sessions between participants and faculty panels.

Hands-on workshops—lab sessions with surgical implants and saw bones offering participants the opportunity to apply techniques demonstrated in the case modules and small group discussions.

Case Discussions—arranged to provide ample individualized interaction between faculty and participants. These sessions are devoted to discussing difficult cases.

Clinical risk and malpractice management panel—an informal panel discussion concerning the reduction of malpractice risk exposure and the current issues concerning tort reform.

OBJECTIVES Identify the current principles of management for patients with orthopaedic sports and trauma related injuries in the community environment.

Appreciate the nuances of diagnosing, treating and rehabilitating soft tissue injuries around the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle.

Integrate the technical aspects of rapid extremity immobilization including spanning external fixation and intramedullary nailing into health care providers’ practices.

Compare and contrast the various treatment strategies for patients with orthopaedic trauma injuries.

Define the current standards for post-injury rehabilitation after orthopaedic injury.

Recognize and assess practice risk reduction in caring for orthopaedic injury patients.

TARGET AUDIENCE Orthopaedic surgeons, residents, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses interested in or currently caring for orthopaedic injury patients.
