TRANSPORTATION PROCEDURES
WHY DO WE DO THIS? Child safety is our top priority Ensures that each child is picked up by a
proper parent or guardian every time Gives us the chance to interact one-on-
one with each child every day Allows us to check in with both kids and parents
about any questions or concerns Helps keep the process organized and efficient
Lots of people coming and going in a very small space
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT? Issued a yellow card in your registration packet Write your child’s name on it legibly Place it on your dashboard so it can be read by an officer from
outside the vehicle A yellow card with your child’s name on it needs to
be present each day of camp in order to pick up your child If someone else will be picking up your child
during camp, ensure that you give them your child’s yellow card
Extra yellow cards are available upon request
DROPPING OFF A CHILD Pull up along the curb to the first available space Parents need to stay in their cars
Apply sunscreen, gather supplies, and give hugs & kisses before you go
Keep traffic flowing – don’t double park!
PICKING UP A CHILD Wait in line until an officer assigns you a number (1-5) Park along the curb next to your number The officer will read the names off your yellow cards over the PA
PICKING UP A CHILD During busy times, traffic will line up along Lakeside Drive Please don’t block the driveways so traffic can keep moving
NO
One Way Traffic Only
Approach on Lakeside Drive From the East ONLY Enter Parking lot as directed
EAST WEST
PICKING UP A CHILD Officers will assist your children with getting into the vehicle and
buckling into seatbelts/car seats to keep traffic flowing smoothly
KEEP IT EFFICIENT
Leave as a group Wait to drive away from your number
until the numbers in front of you start to move
Put the car seat on the right (passenger) side of the car if possible to speed up the process for officers buckling kids in
Parents need to stay in their cars during the pick-up and drop-off process
Picking Up A Child
Exit Parking Lot Turn WEST ONLY
WEST
WHAT IF WE WALK? Parents who walk with their children will need to wait in line next to the officer with
the PA to have the child’s name called Those children will be asked to report to the sidewalk instead of to a number (1-5)
DO I NEED A CAR SEAT? Iowa Law requires all children under age 6 to be in a child
passenger seat (not a seat belt alone!) To maximize safety, keep your child in the car seat for as long
as possible - as long as the child fits within the manufacturer’s height and weight requirements
Keep your child in the back seat at least through age 12
A seat belt should be snug across the shoulder and chest, and should not rest across the neck or face
A seat belt should lie across the upper thighs, not the stomach area
