Cranes are a bro ad class o f co nst ruct ion equipment used t o hoist and p laceloads. Each type of crane is designed and manufactured to work economically in

a specific site situation. Const ruct ion cranes are usually t empo rary st ruct ures, either f ixed t o t heground or mounted on a purpose-built vehicle.

Cranes may either be c ont rolled from an operato r in a cab t hat t ravels with t hecrane, by a pushbutton pendant control station, or by infrared or radio control.

Where a cab oper at or is employed, workers on t he g round will co mmunicat ewit h the op erato r t hrough a syst em of st andardised hand-s ignals o r, in larg erinstallations, radio systems; an experienced crew can position loads with greatprecision using only these signals.

Choice of crane is made depending on: Purpose or nat ure of work- Handl ing ,Erect ion etc

Posit ion of work- Ground, t op o f struct ure, open yard, inside a building. Nat ure of t errain or c ondit ion. Capacit ies load t o be lif ted. Power available- elect rical, hydraulic, diesel et c. Speed o r rat e of prog ress of work needed & ease or comfort ofoperation.

These cranes spre ad t heir dead load o verlarger area through their long tracks, and as

such are useful while working in unpreparedsurfaces.

Befor e hoist ing a load t he machine must beleveled and ground settlement considered.

If soil failure o r g round- set t lement ispossible, the machine can be positioned and

    leveled on mats.

To relocat e a crawler crane bet ween project srequires that it be transported by truck, rail,or barg e. As t he size o f t he c rane increases, the time and cost to dismantle, load, investigate haul routes, and reassemble the

    crane also increase.

M ost crawler c rane mode ls have a fixed -lengt h lat t iceboom. A lattice boom is cable-suspended, and thereforeact s as a co mpression member, not a bending member.

The boo m of t hese c ranes c omes in sect ions which arejoined by p in co nnect ions. The st raight boo m thus for medcan lif t loads over a radius of 3 0 t o 4 0 met res.

M achines o f IOO-t on capacit y and above are built for li ftcapability and do not have the heavier components requiredfor duty-cycle work.

The universal machines inco rporat e heavier frames, haveheavy-duty or multiple clutches and brakes, and have morepowerful swing systems.

    TELESCOPING-BOO M TRUCK-M O UNTED C RANES

There are t ruck cranes t hat have a self -contained telescoping boom.

Most o f these unit s can t rave l on t he pub lichighways between projects under their ownpower with a minimum of dismantling.

Once the crane is leve led at t he new work s it e ,it is ready to work without setup delays.

If a job requires crane ut ilizat ion for a few hoursto a couple of days, a telescoping truck craneshould be given first consideration because ofits ease o f movement and set up.

There are three common power and cont ro larrangements for telescoping-boom truck cranes:

    1 . A single engine as bot h t he t ruck and c rane powersource, wit h a single, dual-po sition c ab used bot hfor d riving t he t ruck and o perat ing t he c rane.

2 . A single engine in t he carr ier but wit h both t ruckand crane operating cabs.

3 . Separat e power unit s for the t ruck and t hesuperstructure. This arrangement is standard for

    the larger capacity units.

    LATTICE-BOOM TRUCK-M O UNTED C RANES

The lat t ice-bo om t ruck cr ane has a fullrevolving superstructure mounted on a multi

axle truck/carrier. The lat t ice-boo m st ruct ure is l ightweight .This r ed uct ion in bo om weight meansadditional lift capacity, as the machinepre-dominantly handles hoist load and less

    weight of bo om.

The lightwe ight bo om will g ive a lessexpensive lat t ice-boo m machine t he samehoist ing capacit y as a larg er t elescop ing-boom unit.

The disadvant age of t hese units is t he t imeand effort required to disassemble them for

    transport.

. In t he case of t he larg er units, it may benecessary to remove the entiresuperst ruct ure. Add it ionally, a second c rane isoften required for this task.

    ROUGH -TERRAIN CRANES

These c ranes are mount ed on t wo-axle carriers.

The op erat or's cab may be mount ed in t he uppe r

works, allowing the operator to swing with theload. However, on many models, the cab islocated on the carrier.

These units are eq uipped wit h unusually larg ewheels and closely spaced axles to improvemaneuverability at the job site.

They furt her e arn t he l ig ht t o t heir name by t heirhigh ground clearance, as well as their ability tomove on slopes of up t o 5 0 or 7 0 %, dependingon the particular make and manufacturer.

M os t unit s can t ravel on the highway but have

maximum spe ed s o f o nly about 3 0 kmph. In t hecase of long moves bet ween project s, t heyshould be transported on low-bed trailers.

M any unit s now have joyst ick cont rols. A joyst ickallows the operator to manipulate four functionssimultaneously.

    ALL-TERRAIN CRANES

The all-ter rain crane is d esigned wit h anundercarriage capable of long-distance highwaytravel. Yet the carrier has all-axle drive and all-wheel steer, crab steering, large tires, and highground clearance.

It has d ual cabs, a lower c ab for fast highwaytravel, and a superstructure cab that has bothdrive and crane control. The machine can,

therefore, be used for l imited pick-and-carry work By co mbining job- site mobilit y and t ransitcapability, this machine is appropriate whenmultiple l ifts are required at scattered projectsites or at multiple work locations on a singlepro ject .

An all-t err ain machine can be po sit ioned o n theproject without the necessity of having otherconstruction equipment prepare a smooth travelway as truck cranes would require.

    HEAVY-LIFT CRANES

These c ranes c onsist of a boo m and co unt erweight ,each mounted on independent crawlers that are

coupled by a stinger. This configuration utilizes avertical strut and inclined mast to decreasecompressive forces in the boom.

    GANTRY CRANES

Gantry cr anes are most oft en found in po rt sand railroads, where they unload and movehuge containers off of ships and trains. The bases are huge cr ossbeams which run onrails, so lifted containers can be moved fromone location to another. Capac it ie s- 60 , 7 5 , 1 0 0 , 1 2 0 Tonnes.

    TO WER C RANES

Tower cranes are ext ensively used inbuilding projects, specially in high rise

construction sites where workco ncent rat ion is in a limite d area.

Tower cranes provide high lif t ing heightand good working radius.

These advant ages are achieved at t heexpense of low lifting capacity and limited

mobility, as compared to mobile cranes.

The th ree common tower c raneconfigurations are

1 . a special vert ical boom arrangement on amobile crane

2 . a mobile crane superst ruct ure mount edatop a tower or,

    3 . A ver t ical t ower wit h a j ib .

    HOIST

    D e finit ion .

A hoist is a device used for lifting or lowering a loadby means of a drum or lift-wheel around which rope orchain wraps. It may be manually operated orelectrically driven and may use chain, fiber or wire ropeas its lifting medium. The load is attached to the hoistby means of a lifting hook.

Depending on the movability of t he Hoist it c ouldbe of t wo types:

1 )STATIC Type : I t consist of a mast or tower withthe lift platform either cantilevered from the smallsection mast or centrally suspended with guides on

either side within an enclosing tower.

2 )MO BILE Type : It has a maximum height of2 4 m.They are p os itioned on a firm level base and jacked to ensure stability.

  • 8/14/2019 Transport Equipments

    28/45

The basic hoist has two important characteristics to define it:

Lifting me d ium and p owe r t ype .The lifting medium is either wire rope, wrapped around a drum, orload-chain, raised by a gear-like wheel. The power type can be either electric motor or air motorBoth the wire rope hoist and chain hoist have been in common uses ince the 1 8 0 0 s . .

The various hoist ing eq uipment s generally used are:

    1 ) Pulleys

    2 ) Chain Hoist s

    3 ) Winches

    4 ) Cranes

    PULLEYS:

Used for lifting rough surfaced and heavy objects.Alloy chains andwide ropes are used for this purpose.

    CHAIN HO ISTS:

They consists of two sets chains namely the hand chainand t he load chain. They can lift up t o 5 0 t onnes.

    HO IST WINCH:

This is a combination of gears, clutches andbrakes.Diesel Engine or electric motor is used asprime mover.

    CRANE:

A Crane is a d evice or machine used for lift ing loadsby means of rope. The use of cranes is mainly due tothe need to raise the large and heavy prefabricatedcomponents often used in modern structures.

    CO NSTRUCTIO N HO ISTS:

Also known as a Man-Lift , or co nstruct ion elevat or, t his t ype o fhoist is commonly used on large scale construction projects, such as high-rise buildings or major hospitals. The purpose being to carry personnel and materials quicklybetween the ground and higher floors, or between upper floors. The construction hoist is made up of either one or two metalliccages which t ravel vert ically along st acked mast t ower sect ions.

    CHAIN O R RO PE:

For a given rated load wire rope is lighter in weight per unit length butit is l imit ed t o dr um diamet ers far larg er t han the l ift wheel over which

    chain may function.

Therefore, a high-performance chain hoist may be of significantly smallerphysical size than a wire rope hoist rated at the same working load.If the wire in a wire hoist fails, it can whip and cause injury, while a chainwill simply break.

    S UBM ERSIBLE PUM P

A submersible pump is a pump which has a hermetically sealed motor close-coupled t o t he pump bod y.The whole assembly is submerged in the fluid to be pumped. The advantage of this type of pump is that it can provide a significant liftingforc e as it d oes not rely on ext ernal air p ressure t o l ift t he fluid. The power source is usually an electric motor.A system of mechanical seals are used to prevent the fluid being pumpedenter ing t he mot or and causing a short circuit.

Their compact and streamlined design makes them ideal for wells and other jobswhere space is limited. These can be used for a dept h of 8 0 1 0 0 d epending o n t he dept h of thewater table.

Submersible pumps are found in many applications, such as drainage, sewagepumping, general industrial pumping and slurry pumping, for water abstraction orin water wells.Submersible pumps are also used in oil wells.

    WORKING

The entire pump assembly including the electric motor which is watertight islowered do wn int o t he well at a certain dept h det ermined by t he t ot al dept hof your well.

The pump pushes the water up into the plumbing using a series of impellers.

The impellers ride on top of each other separated by discs called diffusers andare connected to a central shaft which is driven by the electric motor. As waterflows through each impeller it's speed is increased and so is the pressure.

Generally used for heights varying from 2 5 7 5 .An electric motor drives an impeller which draws air from just above the waterin the intake pipe creating a vacuumAt mosp heric pre ssure pushes t he wat er upward and int o t he p ump.

At the end of the pressure pipe the water isaccelerated through a cone-shaped nozzle at theend.

Then the water goes through a Venturi in the

Suction Pipe (the pipe on the left). The venturi has two parts: the Venturi Throat, which is the pinched section of the suction tube;and above that is the venturi itself which is thepart where the tube widens and connects to thesuct ion pipe.

The venturi speeds up the water causing apressure drop which sucks in more watert hrough t he int ake at t he very base of t he unit. The wat er go es up t he Suct ion Pipe and t hrought he impeller

CENTRIFUGAL PUM PS/S ELF PRIM ING PUM PS

These pumps produce a continuous steady outflow of fluids. The pressure required for the operation is created by the centrifugal

acceleration of the impeller. The fluid flows axially t owards t he impeller, which de flec t s t he fluid, causing adirect ion change. This change in direction causes acceleration, which increases the pressure atthe outlet. The whole mechanism revolves around t he principle of c onvert ing kinet ic energy

of t he fluid int o press ure energ y.

    WORKING

They consist of a rotary impeller which revolves at ahigh speed forcing t he wat er t o t he sidesOf the impeller chamber and thus sucking air out of

the suction hose.Atmospheric pressure causes the water to rise intothe pump and causing the pump operation.
