• By working together we are increasing the chances of the right investment choices being made at the earliest possible stage

• Aiming to provide the runway for later stage capital and equity investment beyond grant funding

• Enable early stage, growing companies to get direct access to the commercial acumen and market access opportunities private sector equity investors provide

• Enable leadership teams to have more time to focus on managing the business rather than continually chasing investment

• Experiment with a new model, learn, check and adjust

The Investment Accelerator aims:

The Investment Accelerator Competition:

• Accelerate the established process – Grant + Match

• This is a pilot programme for Innovate UK

• It provides simultaneous grant funding and venture capital investment for early stage projects

Smart infrastructure

• Innovations that develop smart, resilient and sustainable integrated infrastructure. We are looking for innovations that add intelligence to our programmeareas to:

– improve functionality, capacity, productivity, security or whole-life performance

– improve resilience and sustainability and reduce the risk of failure

– reduce whole-life costs or environmental damage (such as air pollution)

Energy supply and systems

• Innovations that improve value proposition, energy affordability and security, and reduce carbon emissions. – energy supply solutions, such as

carbon abatement, renewable energy technologies, nuclear power and hydrogen and fuel cells

– solutions that flexibly match energy supply and demand, such as storage, grid balancing and integration of micro-energy generation

– solutions that optimiseperformance across different energy vectors (the competition is not limited to electricity)

Page 14: Transport Cafe - Amazon S3 · Investment Accelerator Competition –100% Project Costs • 2 Streams 1) Infrastructure Systems 2) Health and Life Sciences • 2 Phases –preferred

Connected transport

• innovations that improve network capacity and efficiency and reduce operational cost, through balancing demands for transport infrastructure and connecting different transport modes, people and goods

• better services, flexibility, reliability and safety through greater system intelligence in existing transport networks

• systems integration to enable sustainable transport

Urban living

• citizen-centric solutions to challenges experienced in urban environments, leading to better health and wellbeing, increased productivity and higher resilience to change and system shocks

• urban living solutions that integrate ‘hard’, ‘soft’ and/or environmental systems:

– ‘hard’ systems such as energy, transport, waste, water and communication

– ‘soft’ systems such as security, law, justice, health, wellbeing, social care and education

– environmental systems such as parks and other green spaces, rivers and canals

Page 15: Transport Cafe - Amazon S3 · Investment Accelerator Competition –100% Project Costs • 2 Streams 1) Infrastructure Systems 2) Health and Life Sciences • 2 Phases –preferred

Out of scope

• building fabric, white goods and vehicles

• transport innovations that can only be applied to a single mode of transport, such as automotive, rail, air or marine vehicles or vessels. Although the initial activity may concentrate on a single mode of transport, there must be the potential to connect infrastructure, people and goods using additional transport modes

• urban living applications that do not bring about better health and wellbeing, increased productivity or higher resilience to change and system shocks

Industrial Computer Vision

Scope

- Detect and recognize characters located within the stamp printed on a food can.

- (this can be generalised to other object detection such as for self driving car etc)

Problem statement

The current industrial application is not able to:

- reliably detect text in certain X/Y coordinates and rotation ranges.

- accurately detect text with varying scale and skew,

- cope with high degree of noise, distortion and light variation.

It leads to low first time yield / poor quality, production downtime

Early in vehicle fault detection systems

In vehicle sensors deliver huge amount of data which is currently used in a very limited way. By designing intelligent algorithms IC can

deliver solutions that would analyse the data in real-time and predict / identify potential faults in vehicle. Such system could potentially

warn a driver before fault occurrence and in some circumstances help to avoid accidents.

Route Prediction and Optimization

IC specializes in predictive modelling. The historical data of driver’s destinations can be used to predict future travel

directions. Using this knowledge a vehicle can adjust the performance of a car intelligently for the predicted route. This

would reduce the fuel consumption and increase the driver’s experience. We carried out project in collaboration with JLR

on route optimisation - self-learning car initiative.

Computer vision

Modern cars are very often equipped with at least one vision sensors. Those sensors can be used to provide an informed

feedback to a driver about the driving conditions. IC with its extensive experience in computer vision can develop a number

of custom build vision systems such as for example: obstacle detection, sign detection and identification, lane detection and

many more computer vision systems that can help a driver to better asses the situation on road.

Data Science & AI

Drivers behaviour analysis

The many in-vehicle sensors currently installed in modern cars can be used to analyse a behaviour of driver. IC offers to develop a

custom build system that would analyse a behaviour of driver from various sensors (Visible light camera, CAN, Audio and other). This

information can be used in a number of ways: to identify a current driver, in preventing a theft, identify when a driver is distracted or

tired. An application of such system apart form an obvious increase in driver safety and comfort can help in marketing a car.

Connected vehicle

Cars which are equipped with an Internet access, undoubtedly introduce many opportunities for car manufactures. The

potential of storing and using the data to analyse many aspects of car performance both on-line and off-line is huge. This

however poses a challenge of how to analyse and find important patterns in this ocean of data efficiently. Interactive

Coventry offers to develop a custom build platform which helps to analyse the data and provides an important insight which

can help to truly understand the meaning of the data.

Data driven cyber-security

Although the concept of connected cars brings many opportunities it comes at a cost of cyber-security risk. By analysing a data flow to

and from a car we can identify a suspected behaviour and in consequence warn and isolate it. Interactive Coventry offers to develop

such dynamic and secure systems. Our patented algorithm is capable of analysing big volumes of data to identify abnormal /

suspicious activity in real-time.

Detection of road surface

Although many in vehicle sensors are mounted to perform a specific task, they can be used in combination to perform

unintended novel tasks. The usage of already mounted sensors helps to improve drivers experience with no additional

costs. Interactive Coventry proposes to develop a system capable of identifying a road surface with a use of sensors that

are already installed in a car. The information of road surface can be used to adjust car performance thus reduce

maintenance and running costs.

Car performance optimization

Modern vehicles generate massive amount of data which is rarely used to optimise car performance. Interactive Coventry offers to

create a system which can help to optimize the performance of a car based on available data. This can help to reduce running costs

and make cars more environment friendly.
