The nomenclature PF/PNF has been changed to PF/PM (Pilot Monitoring) to more clearly define and emphasize on the role of the non-flying pilot.

Changeover in Nomenclature :

Transition to new B737 SOPTransition to new B737 SOP Introduction Introduction New nomenclature PF/PM New nomenclature PF/PM

The changeover in nomenclature CAPT-FO to PF-PM occurs on GND when the airplane starts moving under its own power.

Transfer of Flight Controls :

If the airplane is equipped with dual nose wheel steering, there will not be any transfer of Flight Controls. The Captain or FO being PF will have control during all ground and flight operation.

In some companies, the nomenclature CAPT-FO is replaced by LHSP-RHSP

After landing the changeover from PF-PM back to CAPT-FO occurs when the airplane stops moving and engines are shutdown.

If the airplane is not equipped with dual nose wheel steering and the FO is pilot flying, the CAPT will temporarily be PF on GND ; Flight Controls will be transferred to the FO during Takeoff and back to the CAPT at the end of the Landing roll-out.

In the past the captain as PF was also monitoring airplane systems. To increase safety, airplane systems are now monitored by the PM.

This resulted in new areas of responsibility as follows :

On GND (aircraft not moving under it own power) :

- the CAPT is responsible for controlling and navigating the airplane - the FO is responsible for all other airplane systems

On GND (aircraft moving under its own power) and in FLT :

- the PF is responsible for controlling and navigating the airplane - the PM is responsible for all other airplane systems - both pilots are responsible for engine control and indication

Checklists have been given a tighter focus by eliminating several items. These items still need to be accomplished in the normal procedures !

Checklists contain minimum items needed to operate the airplane safely.Normal checklists contain items that meet any of the following criteria:

• items essential to safety of flight that are not monitored by an alerting system• items essential to safety of flight that are monitored by an alerting system, but if not done, would likely result in a catastrophic event if the related alerting system fails• items that the FAA requires in the checklist• items needed to maintain fleet commonality between the 737, 747-400, 757, 767, and 777• items that enhance safety of flight and are not monitored by an alerting system • during shutdown and secure, items that could result in injury to personnel or damage to equipment if not done.

During pre- & post-flight, the complete Control Stand is within the Capt (LHSP)

area of responsibility, while the Control Stand is divided in 2 areas at changeover

to PF/PM !

The Overheat/Fire Protection Panel is checked when starting

the APU.

If APU start is postponed, you may also delay the panel check

Do not forget to reset FUEL USED

from previous flight

During pre- & post-flight, the Aileron and Rudder Trim are

within the F/O (RHSP) area of responsibility, while this panel

goes to the PF at changeover.

Aileron and Rudder Trim system check (free

movement) has moved to the Before Start phase.

Check proper operation of TR1-2-3:

TR1 and TR2 load should indicate : - (CL) slight positive - (NG) circa 20-25 AMPS

TR3 load should indicate : - (CL) almost zero - (NG) circa 10-15 AMPS

Higher load on TR3 may indicate TR1-2 failure, which is a NOGO (MEL 24-6)

As a general rule, start APU at STD-5’.

Reasons to delay APU start :

- APU cycle life time - Fuel savings - Noise abatement

Reasons to advance APU start :

- Passenger comfort - Duct Pressure for coffee (CL)

The LHSP will setup the MCP and the Control Stand

Caution when selecting Parking Brake ; check for

sufficient accumulator pressure since Hydraulic

pumps are OFF !

Although not a Boeing SOP, check proper operation of the FUEL CROSSFEED VALVE.

An inoperative Fuel Crossfeed Valve results in a NOGO !

(The Fuel X-feed Valve is not mentioned in the MEL, thus being a NOGO. MEL 28-5 applies to the BLUE x-feed light only !)

The SPEED TRIM amber light remains illuminated until IRS-1 (CL) ADIRU-1 (NG) is aligned.

“ARMED” and “DOWN” in fact are the standard call-outs from Boeing, both for normal

and non-normal checklists.

Your airline may use other call-outs in the

normal Landing Checklist such as

“ARMED, GLT” and “DOWN, 3G”
