Transforming the health of land and waters in the greater Mt. Pisgah areaThrough partnerships, volunteers and member investments, the Friends made significant progress toward our vision of vibrant, diverse habitats with compatible recreation in the Mt. Pisgah area.

Turtle Flats: Clean water for salmon and peopleIn 2015, we purchased the 62-acre Turtle Flats property at the confluence of the Willamette’s Coast & Middle Forks. During 2016, in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy and Oregon Parks & Recreation Dept., we cleared invasive weeds on over 60 acres, cleaned up 50 dump truck loads of tires, asphalt and other debris, and constructed 14 channel segments to link 10 historic gravel ponds to the river. By Fall, the Friends began planting a diversity of native plants to restore five distinct habitats on over 60 acres across the three ownerships.

Trails to explore natureThanks to our dedicated trail volunteers and in partnership with Lane County, hikers and equestrians can now enjoy another mile of the beautifully improved North Boundary Trail 4 on Pisgah’s north slope. Our volunteers also designed two major projects for 2017 to improve Quarry Road Trail 5

and to realign the final section of Trail 4, which advances our 5-year trail plan to improve all major trails on Buford Park.

Enhancing rare prairies, oak savannas and woodlands Mount Pisgah’s beloved rare prairies and oak savannas require active management to sustain them. In 2016, we partnered with Lane County to implement Phase 2 to restore and enhance over 145 acres of prairie, oak savanna and oak woodland in our Meadowlark East project. Rare species, like meadowlarks, vesper sparrows and western bluebirds benefit.

Volunteers craft a culture of stewardshipCommunity volunteers in 2016 powered all of our programs, improving board governance, growing native grasses and wildflowers at our nursery, installing plants in our restoration projects, building trails, and providing outreach, development and administrative support. I am deeply moved by over 500 volunteers who, inspired by their love of this rich natural area, contributed over 13,000 hours valued at over $375,000 (see chart, facing page).

Increasing impact through partnershipsGifts from individuals leveraged more than $4 in grants and contributed services for every $1 contributed. We are grateful for our host of partners that help us steward the lands and waters in the greater Mt. Pisgah area. Examples abound. In 2016, Lane County provided critical support for both trail and habitat projects. The Nature Conservancy was an outstanding partner in the Turtle Flats Confluence project. We applaud Mount Pisgah Arboretum for unveiling its first of seven interpretive “eco-nodes” planned within its 209-acre lease area within Buford Park. We treasure our neighbors who manage agricultural lands in Pleasant Hill and Seavey Loop areas. These food-producing areas also buffer Mt. Pisgah from urban development. Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) is our newest neighbor and partner, as they develop a new drinking water intake just downstream from Turtle Flats. Healthy floodplains make clean water, and our restoration projects will help people have reliable clean drinking water in the decades ahead.

With your sustained support, we will continue to manifest our vision of community stewardship of this regionally significant natural and recreation resource that is the greater Mt. Pisgah area.

Fourteen channel segments now connect ten historic gravel ponds to the river. Over 40,000 native trees and shrubs will be installed on more than 60 acres. Restoration improves drinking water quality and habitat for salmon, western pond turtles, river otters, migratory songbirds, waterfowl and more.

A message from Chris Orsinger, Executive Director 2016 Financial Report

Trail volunteers designed and improved another mile of North Boundary Trail 4, partnering with Lane County, which provided equipment and operators. Hikers and equestrians can enjoy a quiet traverse through a conifer forest carpeted with sword fern.
