medida (medida o proteccin) deberemos conocer:
a medir
(corriente mxima, mnima, a medir) Sobrecarga (rango y tiempo)
INTRODUCTION
At the same time that the use of electrical energybegan, the
need of measuring transformers arose. Inthis catalogue well refer
current transformers
Services that transformers must deliver are:- Isolation and
separation of circuits and equipment
for measuring, protection, etc, from high voltage power
lines.
- To avoid disturbances due to carrying high currents
- Reduction of short-circuit currents up to admissible values
for sensitive protection and measuring equipment
- To obtain currents and voltage values proportional to those
wanted to be measured or monitored in order to be sent to
appropriate measuring instruments
The experience demonstratesthat a bad selection orinstallation
of measuring/protective transformers canprovoke either
malfunctioningevents in the installation as well
as the impossibility of guarantying a proper operationof
protection systems at critical moments.
CHOICE
For a proper selection of a measuring transformer(measuring or
protective) we must know:
- The ending application (measuring or protection)- Main
characteristics of the working environment or
use conditions (inner or outdoor, maximum working temperature,
etc.)
- Main characteristics of the power line the transformer will be
connected to:
Dimensions of the cable or bus-bar Measuring range of the
current to be measured
(maximum, minimum current to be measured) Overload (level and
duration) Mains nominal voltage (low, medium or high
voltage) Short-circuit current Mains nominal frequency- Main
characteristics of the instrument or relay
associated to the transformer (accuracy, rated current, rated
output, etc.)
- Distance between transformer and the associated instrument, as
well as the cross-section of the cable used for the link between
both elements

NORMATIVA APLICADA
encima
del 100 % )- Caractersticas de la envolvente (
autoextinguible
V0 )
CARACTERSTICAS DE UNTRANSFORMADOR
INSTALLATION
The transformer is formed by one or more primarywindings (marked
as P1 / K, P2 / L), one or moresecondary windings (marked as S1 / k
, S2 / l) and acore of ferro-magnetic material (Fe-Si, Fe-Ni,
etc.).
The primary is the own bus-bar of the installation incase of a
passing bar transformers. For woundprimary transformers, the
primary is already woundinside the own transformer, thus these
transformersare equipped with suitable holding pieces for their
finalassembly to the installation.
At any power system a consumption direction isstated (from power
utility incoming mains to loads) aswell as a generation direction
is (from generators topower utility incoming mains). According to
this basis, the P1 side of the transformer will correspond to
thepower utility incoming mains side and the P2 side ofthe
transformer will correspond to the load side. Forthe secondary
output terminals, a correspondencebetween S1 and S2 indications in
the transformer andthe associated instrument must be followed.
In case that the polarity of the transformer isinverted, the
phase angle of the current is inverted by180, therefore, measuring
instruments or networkanalyzers whose current signal is supplied by
thistransformer will give incorrect readouts for suchmagnitudes
whose calculation process depends onthe phase angle (power, energy,
power factor), butvoltage and current readouts will be correct.
RELEVANT STANDARDS
Transformers are designed, made and testedaccording to following
harmonized standards:
- IEC 44-1 (replaces IEC 185)- UNE 21088- BS 7626
MAINS FEATURES OF ATRANSFORMER
Main features that define a transformer are thesefollowing
listed:
- Transformation ratio ( Ipn / Isn )- Accuracy class / Rated
output- Highest voltage for equipment / insulation- Security factor
/ Accuracy limit factor- Working frequency- Working temperature (
Thermal class )- Short-circuit current ( Thermal and dynamical )-
Extended current rating ( measuring range over
100 % )- Case characteristics (V0 self-extinguishing)

44.1)
The accuracy class defines the maximum errorintroduced by the
transformer either in current (%) as inangle (minutes) and related
always to a rated output inVA and to the existing primary current
rate. (see table)
Standard accuracy classes for measuring usageare: 0.2, 0.5, 1,
3, 0.2s, 0.5s (IEC 44.1)
Standard accuracy classes for protection usageare: 5P, 10P (IEC
44.1)
precisin.
Potencia de precisin / Rated output
This is the maximum power that the transformer candeliver within
a certain accuracy class. This power will beexpressed in VA. The
consumed burden will becalculated as the addition of the measuring
instrument orprotection relay burden in VA plus the losses in
theconnection cable (taking into account the total distance).
The rated output must be equal or higher than theconsumed burden
within the required accuracyclass.
It is highly recommended that the total burden atthe transformer
output is comprised between 25 % to100 % of the rated output.
This is the maximum voltage of the mains thetransformer will be
connected to. The insulation voltageis the peak r.m.s. voltage that
the transformer mustwithstand during 1 minute.
For a maximum usage voltage of 720 V~, theinsulation voltage is
of 3 kV~ (IEC 44.1)
Tensin de red - Tensin de aislamiento / Highest voltage for
equipment - Insulation voltage
5000 A. Es posible otrosvalores).
/ Isn)
The primary current (Ipn) must be selected according tothe
maximum permanent current carried along the line tobe monitored. (1
A ... 5000 A, other values are alsopossible).
The secondary current (Isn) must be selected accordingto the
maximum permanent incoming current of theinstrument the transformer
is supplying (5 A and 1 A arestandard values, other values are also
possible).
Wound primary transformers will be required for themeasurement
of low value currents (see specialapplications).
It is highly recommended to use the transformer formeasuring a
current within a 20% to 100 % of itsrated primary current (for
classes 0.2 s and 0.5 swithin 5 % to 100 %, see table)

For protection applications, unsteady current peaks arewanted to
be detected, which implies that the measuringrange of protective
transformers will not be within 0 100% of the rated current, but,
between the 100 % and thevalue that sets the protection limit
factor.
This value is defined in the protective transformerfollowing the
P mark (example 5P10).
Standard values are 5, 10, 15, 20, 30.
Factor lmite de precisin (tranf. de proteccin) / Accuracy limit
factor (protective transformers)
C).(IEC 44-1)
This point defines the maximum temperature that thetransformer
can withstand with suffering no electrical ormechanical damage.
This temperature will be determinedas the addition of a maximum
ambient air temperature(45 C) and a maximum temperature rise
provoked bythe inner winding (see table).
The standard thermal class for plastic casetransformers is A
(105 C). For resin casetransformers are A (105 C) or B (130 C) (as
per IEC44-1).
Clase trmica (Temperatura de trabajo) / Thermal class (Working
temperature)
(Fs) (measuring transformers)
The security factor defines a maximum value of thecurrent at the
primary side from which the transformergets saturated, that is, at
this saturation point thesecondary current will not increase though
the primarycurrent increases. This value will be set for the
ratedoutput, and it is inversely proportional to the
transformerburden.
The safety of the instrument supplied by thetransformer is
greatest when the value of the ratedinstrument security factor is
small. The standardvalue for measuring instruments is set at Fs
< 5.
This current defines the behaviour of the transformeragainst
both thermal and dynamic forces provoked by ashort-circuit event at
the installation point.
Corriente del cortocircuito (trmica y dinmica) / Short-circuit
current (thermal and dynamic)
The primary current range for which the transformer canoperate
in a steady state also keeping all its features(accuracy,
temperature rise, insulation, etc.)
Gama extendida (Extd.) / Extended current rating (Extd.)
The standard thermal current (Ith) is set at 60 Ipn(80 Ipn)
during 1 s, whilst the dynamic current (Idyn)is set at 2.5 Ith.
Whether no extended range value is defined, thisvalue is set at
100 % of Ipn. Other standard valuesare 120 %, 150 %, 200 %.

nAPLICACIONES
parte baja dela curva magntica (correspondientes a corrientesbajas)
APPLICATIONS
A: Instalacin / InstallationB: Aparato medida / Measuring

A

1- Rise of a transformer burden keepingthe accuracy class
Whether the rated output of a transformer is requiredto be
increased but also keeping the rated accuracyclass (for instance, a
TA 100B for a ratio of 100/5 Adelivers an apparent power of 5 VA in
class 1, but anapparent power of 10 VA in class 1 is required),
twoor more transformers with the same transformationratio and
characteristics can be serial connected, provided primary and
secondary polarities arerespected. Output terminals will be then
the S1 of thefirst transformer and S2 of the last one. (See figure
1).
The final result will be a transformer with the samerated ratio,
accuracy class and a rated output equal tothe addition of each
individual rated output.
2- Measuring low range currents. (woundprimary transformers)
The measurement of low range currents (from mA to50 A) is
basically limited by two features:
- Window of the magnetic core.- Properties of the magnetic core
(material, quality).
The most commonly used material for measuringtransformers is an
alley of Fe-Si that delivers a lowlinearity at the low part of the
magnetic curve(associated to low range currents) and a
highinduction level (about 1.7 T) before the saturationpoint
(ability to supply a high burden, which makes thismaterial to be
especially suitable for protectionapplications).
This material permits to get a relatively low costtogether with
reduced dimensions; as well as to obtaingood features related to
rated output, accuracy andlinearity provided the working point is
far from the lowpart of the magnetic curve.

espiras
de secundario, Ip corriente deprimario y Is corriente
desecundario.
deltransformador. Los amperios-vuelta los podemos aumentarsubiendo
la Ip o aumentando elNp.
Si queremos medir corrientesbajas y necesitamos que
eltransformador suministrepotencia elevadas con clasesde precisin
bajas,necesitaremos aumentar Np, esdecir, transformadores
deprimario bobinado. (tipos TA210,TM45).
NOTA APLICACIN:
Podemos fabricarnos nuestro propio transformadorprimario
bobinando eltransformador (primario) exteriormente (dibujo).
Barra pasante / Passing bar
Primario bobinado / Wound primary
This situation will arise when the transformer ismeasuring high
currents or when the transformer is ofwound primary type.
The transformer primary can be passing type(primary formed by
one winding) or wound type(primary formed by several windings) but,
at any case, the following formula must be met:
Ns / Np = Ip / IsWhere Np = No. of primary
windings and Ns = No. ofprimary windings; Ip = currentprimary
and Is = secondarycurrent.
The product Ip Np definesthe amps-turns ratio of thetransformer.
This ratio isdirectly proportional to therated output and the
accuracyclass; and can be increasedjust raising Ip or Np value.
In case that we require tomeasure low currents butkeeping a
considerable ratedoutput at a low accuracyclass, Np should be
thenincreased, that is, the use ofwound primary transformerwill be
necessary. (typesTA210, TM45).
APPLICATION NOTE:
A wound primary transformer can be obtained froma passing bar
transformer, keeping also its features, just externally winding the
transformer (see drawing).
The obtained transformer has a rated output andaccuracy class
equivalent to the original passing typebut with a transformation
ratio equal to the division ofthe Ipn value of the passing type
transformer and thenumber of windings done at the primary
side(polarities must always be respected).
For instance, a transformer type TA 30, 300/5(passing bar) with
2 primary windings will become intoa TA 30, 150/5 but delivering
the rated output andaccuracy class of the TA 30, 300/5 A

(DH96, convertidor,CVM-ITFEXT).
3- Passing bar transformers for measuringof currents from 1
mA
At the former section we have seen that due to themagnetic
characteristics of Fe-Si cores, somelimitations of linearity and
dimensions might appear(limitation of the inner diameter for low
currents).
For such applications with the need of measuring alow current
with high linearity and accuracy (highpermeability) or when the
diameter of the carryingcables is high although the current to be
monitored islow (applications at high-voltage), the use of
Fe-Nimagnetic cores will be then required.
This material presents a high linearity at any point ofthe
magnetic curve and also a low induction (1-1.1 T)(ability to supply
low burdens), with the addition of aquick saturation.
Applications:
- Measurement of residual (earth leakage) currents (WG type
transformer). Monitoring residual currents implies to measure very
low currents (ex. 30 mA) with high primary windows (see the
application scheme. These type of transformers are available with
an inner window up to 210 mm
- Measurement of power (wattmeter, digital power meters and
portable network analyzers) at power lines carrying low
currents
- Use of transformers already installed in the facility to
measure the electrical parameters. For this application the
measuring instrument will be connected to the secondary side.../5
of the already existing transformer through an intermediate passing
bar transformer (WG type). These transformers act as a separator
element although its transformation ratio is not 5/5 A, thus, these
must be jointly calibrated with the associated measuring instrument
(DH96, transducer, CVM- ITF-EXT)
4- Using low-voltage current transformersfor measuring at
high-voltage powersystems
Transformers of models TA, TP, WG, TRM or TRPare low-voltage
current transformers, that is, adequatefor power systems with a
maximum service voltage of720 V a.c.
At high-voltage power lines where the insulation isguaranteed by
the own primary cable, the use of low-voltage current transformers
of passing bar type canbe contemplated always noticing that the
features ofthe transformer will always be those for
low-voltagetransformers.
baja tensin.

THE TRANSFORMER RATEDOUTPUT
This is an essential parameter; the carried primarycurrent must
induce into the secondary side thenecessary power to transmit the
secondary current tothe measuring instrument, thus, the induced
powermust be equal or higher than the total losses in thecarrying
secondary line plus the own burden of themeasuring instrument.
Losses in the carrying secondary line, PL :The power loss due to
heating provoked by a current
flowing through the resistance RL of the transformersecondary
output circuit.
Factors to consider: Secondary current. PL = RL x I 2 Diameter
of the cable. RL is inversely proportional
to the diameter square Length of the cable. RL is proportional
to the wiring
length (going and back way)
Rated output:The value of the apparent power (VA) at a
specified
power factor which the transformer is intended tosupply to the
secondary circuit at the rated secondarycurrent and with the rated
burden connected to it,Sc (VA) = Zc x (I
sn) 2
According to standards, for an apparent power equalor higher
than 5 VA, the power factor is 0,8 lagged. For lower apparent
powers, the power factor is set at1.
Example: Supposing a .../5 A currenttransformer with an ammeter
connectedto its secondary at a distance of 10 m.

(Fig 6)

Measuring transformer
TRP
A current transformer is saturated when the primarycurrent or
the secondary burden exceed rated values.
The linearity of the current transformation betweenprimary and
secondary sides drops, so, the error ishigh. You can observe that
the transformer saturationis inversely proportional to the burden.
(Fig. 6)
The difference between measuring and protectivetransformer is
the behaviour in the presence of anovercurrent event at the primary
side.
Measuring transformers get saturated when a certainlevel of
primary current is reached in order to notdamage the associated
measuring instrument.Protective transformers only get saturated
when avery high primary current is reached.
A protective transformer of 5P15 class indicates thatthis is not
saturated until a current 15 times higherthan the rated primary
current is flowing through theprimary winding.
For measuring transformers, the parameter calledSECURITY FACTOR
(Fs) sets the number of timesof the primary current that the
transformer is able totransfer to the measuring instrument.

nTRANSFORMADORES DECORRIENTE DE
PRIMARIOPASANTEAUTOSOPORTANTES
The primary passing bar can be adjusted to thecurrent
transformer by means of a cable glandadaptable to the cross
section. This allows adaptingthe transformer to the primary cable.
The transformerdoes not have any terminal because the
secundaryoutput is a 1.5 m length cable in order to ease
theinstallation.

ventana interior,
permitiendo abrazar cables gruesos o grandes pletinas
secundario 5 A, 1 A 1.5 V Gran precisin y seguridad
SPLIT CORE CURRENTTRANSFORMERSTP Series
The TP series of current transformers have beenespecially
designed to facilitate their installation in newor already existing
networks. Thanks to its split corethey may be installed without
opening any cable orbus bar circuit.
The connection of conventional CTs usually requiresthe
interruption of the primary side circuit to passcables or bus bars
through the transformer core or toconnect such cables to the
primary terminals. The TPseries transformers core may be easily
opened andthey may be installed and connected without anysupply
interruption, thus saving time and installationcosts.
The main features of TP transformers are then: Small size and
easy mounting Wide inner window, allowing clamping of big
cables or bus bars Wide range of sizes to accomodate all the
existing
installations Terminal strip to short circuit the secondary
side
during the installation Primary ranges from 100 to 5000 A
Secondary output 5 A, 1 A or 1.5 V High accuracy and
reliability

Los transformadoressumadores de corriente ofrecenuna fcil
solucin a esteproblema; disponen dediferentes entradas de In/5 A

relacin de los transformadores sea la misma.
Bajo demanda pueden suministrarsetransformadores sumadores para

For this purpose, the currentadding transformers offer aneasy
solution. These deviceshave several input windings In/5and an
output winding whichgives a value proportional to thesum of the
input currents with afull of 5 A (see fig. 2).
The output current of the addertransformer is obtained bymeans
of the followingexpression:
where n is the input number ofthe transformer and I1, I2, ...,
Inare the current of each input.
The addition is only possiblewhen the input currents

TRANSFORMADOR ADAPTADORDE IMPEDANCIASerie TE
IMPEDANCE ADAPTERTRANSFORMERTE Series
Currents of 5 A coming from measurements orcontrol transformers
may have to be connected atlong distances. In this case the line
losses may bevery high, even greater than the available power
fromthe measuring transformer. This will cause important
errors in the measuring or controlprocess.
In these cases the impedanceadapter transformers offer a
solutionconsisting of one currenttransformer at the beginning of
theline with a ratio 5 A / 0.1 A andanother at the end side with a
ratio0.1 A / 5 A (the same type oftransformer inverting the
input/
output connection). The current of 100 mA sentthrough the line,
which may have smaller section andwith reduced losses.

nTRANSFORMADOR DE CORRIENTECON CONVERTIDOR INCORPORADO
convertidor5 A / 4...20 mA.
seleccionada.
CURRENT TRANSFORMER WITHBUILT-IN CONVERTER
4...20 mA d.c.(external or internal supply)
In many installations and control processes it isnecessary to
have a current signal between 4 and20 mA. This signal is presently
obtained by means ofa .../5 A current transformer together with a 5
A /4...20 mA converter.
CIRCUTOR offers a wide range of equipmentsincorporating the
transformer-converter single module, which that substitute the
classic systems.
These converters have a current transformerconsisting of an
active conductor as primary winding, and a secondary winding coiled
around aferromagnetic core. All of the types have a 4...20 mAoutput
with a frequency response that is linearbetween 50 and 60 Hz.
The main application of these converters is theirconnection
to
