Recently, the government announced a new index, the “Air Quality Health Index” (AQHI), to replace the existing Air PollutionIndex.Thenewindex isconsideredtocommunicatethe health risks of pollution more effectively, as shown in Figure1.Thehealtheffectsofairpollutiondependon theconcentrations of the air pollutants and the duration of exposure. Exposure to moderately high pollution levels for a short period will not normally lead to significant health problems. The risk factors of each pollutant were obtained from local health studies. The biggest advancement is the connection of health risk with the pollution data, such as ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulatematter (PM2.5/PM10).1 This is an integrated approach.
A few years ago, I obtained LEED-AP, but I have beenstruggling. At one time, I decided to keep it simple (i.e. without a specialty), but in October this year, I finally upgraded myself toLEED-APwithspecialtyBD+C.Well, Iunderstand Ihaveto invest more money and time to maintain the credential, but this also drives me to stay current on the green building movement. In other words, we have to make an effort to protect the environment. There is a cost behind simplicity, convenienceorcomfort.Infact,theUSGBChasalsomadeaneffort to recognize various activities2inthedailylivesofLEEDprofessionals. For example:• by offer ing preferred courses and presentat ions
from registered providers, self-reported courses and presentations, college and university courses;
• countingpaidorunpaidworkonaregisteredproject;• creditingcontributionstoprintordigitalpublications;and• acknowledgingvoluntaryparticipation in theUSGBC, the

do better. Early this year, I visited my friends at the Vietnam Green Building Council in Hanoi. I shared these samethoughts. Subsequently they made an effort to investigate a better approach to assess the environmental impact of refrigerant use in green buildings. Recently, I found that an integrated approach is adopted in their local green building rating system.3 An excerpt isshown inFigure2. Itconsiders“combinedatmospheric impact” due to the lifecycleODPandGWPof refrigerantuse in thebuilding,whichmeansthe refrigerant leakage/lossduringoperation should beincorporated in the calculation as well.
There is an even more comprehensive methodology for calculating the combined annual impact of any piece of electric-driven and refrigerant-based equipment:4
In this formula, not only are the refrigerantODP,GWPandleakageconsidered, but also theenergygeneration/useefficiency (b/Eff ), embodied energy (E) and fugitive emission (F) during the refrigerant production process are considered. While the b/Eff values are readily available, E/F values are not easily obtained today. It could be an enhanced approach for environmental assessment of the next gen refrigerants if the E/F values are made mandatory required data from the manufacturers.
Pleasedo not get me wrong. I am not promoting the above formula. All I am saying is that we should try not to take a simple approach while a better option is available, even if we have to make a little more effort. The same principle is illustrated above in different aspects. In developing the next gen chiller, as I mentioned in the last issue, we are taking even more challenges to find the right balance among economic, environmental and societal demands.5 They are well summarized in Figure 3.

How does the Oil Lubrication Circulation work on a R123 Centrifugal Chiller? 機油的潤滑循環如何在R123離心式 冷水機組運作?
The CenTraVac Chiller is equipped with an “Oil Refrigerant Pump”foritscompressorlubricationandmotorcoolingsystem.It is a dual function system: one of the pumps circulates oil for compressor bearing lubrication and the other pump supplies liquid refrigerant for compressor motor cooling. In this issue, we will first look into how the oil lubrication circulation works.
The oil lubrication circulation consists of a regulating valve, filter, cooler and an oil tank housing a pump, a motor, a manifold and an oil separator within. The oil is pumped from the oil tank through an oil pressure regulating valve designed to maintain a netoilpressureof18-22psid.Theoilisfilteredandsenttotheoil cooler located inside the economizer, where liquid refrigerant passing from the condenser to the evaporator cools the oil. The oil leaves the oil cooler and flows to both the thrust and journal bearings. From the bearings, the oil return lines are routed
into a manifold and oil separator under the motor transporting the oil and some seal leakage refrigerant back to the oil tank. The gas flow exits the top of the manifold and is vented to the evaporator. Oil exits from the bottom of the manifold and returns to the tank. The CenTraVac Chiller is equipped with a dual eductor system which utilizing high-pressure conduction gas to draw the oil from the suction cover and the evaporator to the eductors and then the oil is discharged into the oil tank. The evaporator eductor line has a shut-off valve mounted by the evaporator and ships closed. Open up to two turns, if necessary.
Oil temperature in the oil tankWhenthechillerisoff,a750-wattheaterinawellintheoiltankisusedtowarmtheoil to ensure proper lubrication and prevent the refrigerant from condensing in the oil tank.Bydefault,theoilheaterisenergizedtomaintainatemperatureof140-145°F(60-63°C)whenthechillerisnotrunningandisde-energizedwhenthechillerstarts.Thetemperatureof theoil tank is typically100-160°F(38-72°C)whenthechilleris operating. Caution is required when working on certain areas of the chiller, as the surfacetemperaturemayexceed150°F(65°C).
Common faults related to the Oil Circulation NetworkCommonfaultsrelatedtotheoilcirculationnetworkare“LowDifferentialPressure”and“DifferentialOilPressureOverdue”.A dirty oil filter could cause these faults. Changing the filter could be a quick fix for the issue. However, a net oil pressure drop, failure to build up the oil pressure and erratic oil pressure could also be the result of a poor compressor bearing condition resulting from normal wear and tear under chiller operation over time. Therefore, an oil analysis should also be performed to verify the compressor bearing condition in order to determine if a compressor overhaul is needed.
