Training on Application of Bio-informatics in Biological Research Gangtok, March 13: Bioinformatics Centre, Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology, Department of Science &Technology and Climate Change conducted a Training Programme on “Application of Bioinformatics in Biological Research” on 13 th March 2014, in Vigyan Bhawan, Deorali. Shri S.K. Shilal, Member Secretary, Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology was the Chief Guest of the training programme. The programme was attended by the Research Scholars, students from State Bio-Tech Hub SSCS&T and Sikkim University. Addressing the inaugural session, Shri. Shilal, emphasized upon the importance of Bioinformatics training and suggested researchers and students to take maximum benefit from this training programme. In his address, Dr. B.C. Basistha, Additional Director and Coordinator, Bioinformatics Centre, highlighted on the importance of Bioinformatics Researches and its advantages. He also informed that the Bioinformatics, being an allied and advance field of biology, provides all necessary sources for researches, including online biological data sources, including Bioinformatics free software, and much more by just click of a keyboard button. It has became a part of biological including hardcore research, like a Protein researches, Genomic researches, Drug designing etc. Quartely based Bioinformatics News Letter Biogyan, Volume VII was also released. During the inaugural session, Shri. D.G. Shrestha, Additional Director and S hri. D.T. Bhutia, Additional Director, Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology were also present. Responding upon the maximum demands from the participants, to conduct such a valuable training programme for a longer duration, Dr. Basistha ensured to keep the proposal with Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, for financial support. The Resource Persons of this training programme, Dr. Pardeep K. Bhardwaj, Scientist, Regional Centre for Institutite of Bioresources and Sustainable Development, Dr. Kiran Sunar, North Bengal University delivered presentation to the participants on valuable lecture Bioinformatics tools and techniques, Bio-synthetic pathways, lecture on Primer designing, Metagenomics and phylogeny respectively. Shri. Laydong Lepcha, Information Offcier, Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology, presented upon the importance of Bioinformatics in the state and demonstrated a hands-on session for protein sequence identification by using Bioinformatics tools and access of online journals. The day long training was concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participants of the training programme.
