From our State DeputyA New Beginning

We are already two months into our new fraternal year. Time for a check-up and possibly a course correction.

BROTHERSHave you asked another family to join our Order?

Have you given away your faith by living the Gospel and helping other to see Christ in you and your daily works.

COUNCILSHave you hosted or participated in a first degree? If not you need to schedule one

before the end of September.

Have you finished your planning for your October Church Drive and Family activity? There is still time. Make it count.

Are you ready to serve others through our Intellectual Disabilities Drive? Remember that many, many Nebraskans across the state depend on your time and effort to support their education and therapy throughout the year.

DISTRICTSHave you held your District Meeting? If not, schedule time soon to meet with your

Councils and go over the information received at the Summer Leadership seminar. Help Councils prepare for upcoming events by using the Fraternal Planning Calendar each time you attend a meeting.

Are your Councils on track to reach Star Council? Every Council still has the potential to be a Start Council with just a little effort and encouragement.

The State Council just finished an amazing year where, through your efforts, we were able to help storm victims in several towns, purchase scholarships for intellectually disabled students to attend school, help local pregnancy centers continue to work with mothers to protect unborn children and support them once they are born and to foster Fr. McGivney’s vision of providing security, both spiritually and monetarily to Catholic families.

In order to continue this great work we need to continue to grow. Those in need grow daily and our ability to support that need can only be met through growing our order and providing more workers for Christ. You are the only one that can make this happen. It is you who must go out and ask another Catholic family to join us in our efforts. It is you, who by the way that you live your life must encourage others to strengthen their faith and to give of themselves to help others. Through your efforts we can continue to serve those in need, to serve those less fortunate and to serve the Church.

May God Bless you.

Vivat Jesus!

As in many people, recently I received a Facebook message nominating me for the “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge”. I was honored to be considered by two different friends for this challenge and was touched that they recognize the horrifying nature of this disease and the need for a cure. As in many diseases, it is a difficult cross for the person who is afflicted with it and for the family of the person as well. Raising awareness of the need for research for a cure for this disease and others is noble and good.

After receiving the challenges, I was torn and hesitated to participate. Why? After doing a little detective work, I discovered that the ALS Association has admitted to giving some of its money to fund research that involves embryonic stem cell research and they do not appear to be hesitant to do so again in the future. While the ALS Association has recognized that embryonic stem cell research has raised ethical concerns, they are not willing to rule out funding that same type of research in the future. This is sad.

Embryonic stem cell research is immoral. To condone or participate in an evil action (means) in the pursuit of a good purpose is morally incoherent and ultimately reduces the dignity of the very people who are pursuing the noble end as well as those for whom the research is being performed. That is also a tragedy, although one that is not recognized by our modern culture.

Fortunately, that is not the end of the story. There are many different alternatives to the ALS Association that are pursuing ethical research to find a cure for this horrible disease. So, as a friend of mine said “Go right ahead and pour ice water on your head and then donate to ethical research and challenge your friends to do the same.” Some of the ethical alternatives would be: The John Paul II Medical Research Institute, Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center, Dr. Anthony Windebank at the Mayo Clinic, and the Adult Stem Cell Technology Center. A websearch of these alternatives and a visit to their website will provide you with specific details on how to donate.

May God continue to bless the efforts of those who are ethically finding a cure to disease in our midst.

In Christ,

Fr. Troy Schweiger, State Chaplain

From our State Chaplain

Rev. Troy SchweigerState Chaplain

While the end or the purpose in this case is most certainly noble and good, the means used to obtain that noble and good end

must also be noble and good.

Renewed . . .Body, Mind and Spirit

Highlights of the Supreme Convention in Orlando, Florida, August 5-7, 2014

By Rich LoweryNebraska State Deputy

Above:Wednesday’s closing Mass included the relics of the Mexican martyrs

carried in procession and placed on the Altar.

Everyone needs to re-charge their batteries once in a while. In todays’ world we are constantly on the go. Family, church, community, work; all of these take little bits of our time. After a while they can add up to a major part of our life. Things can become boring and routine. Many times we are just going through the motions. When we get to that point, it is time to take a step back. Time to look at what we are doing and evaluate our priorities. Many of us got a chance to do that in Orlando Florida the first week in August.

Over 2,500 Knights and families met at the Orlando World Marriott to celebrate a great year of accomplishments for the Order, to set goals and look forward to next year, and to pray for those being persecuted for loving Jesus.

Nebraska’s delegation - State Deputy Richard Lowery, PSD Jim Haiar, State Secretary Tony Hergott, Program Director Matt Richardson, DD Robert Hauser, Nick Ladenberger, Brent Kallhoff, Fr. Marc Lim, Chuck Donner and Jeff Wardyn started the festivities with the annual pin exchange. Hundreds of Knights and their families joined delegations from across the country and across the world to exchange “state” pins and to get to know one another. We were also blessed to have Mike Conrad, PSD and Member of the Supreme Board of Directors, State Chaplain Fr. Troy Schweiger, Bishop Conley Bishop of Lincoln, Bishop Dendinger Bishop of Grand Island and Bishop Emeritus Bruskewitz (Lincoln) join us during our time in Orlando.

The convention’s formal opening was Mass on Tuesday morning, concelebrated by hundreds of Priests, approximately 90 Bishops, and 7 Cardinals. Just to be in the same room with Brother Knights and their families and all of the clergy was enough to send chills down one’s spine.

We listened to Supreme Knight Carl Anderson talk about records set in monetary giving, service hours and insurance sold to protect Knights and Families. We also heard about a new initiative to Build the Domestic Church where every family is called upon to evangelize and to grow in love and faith. This new program “Building the Domestic Church: The Family Full Alive” will be introduced over the next few months and will provide a yearlong preparation for the 8th Annual World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia on September 22-27, 2015.

At Tuesday evenings States Dinner delegates got a chance to show their true Husker spirit as we sang a slightly modified version of “There is No Place Like Nebraska”. Delegates also got to listen to a moving and uplifting story about helping wounded veterans return to a normal life and a journey to conversion from Gary Sinise.

Wednesday’s closing Mass included the relics of the Mexican martyrs carried in procession and placed on the Altar. At the end of the Wednesday afternoon awards session, where Nebraska was honored with an award for meeting 100% of its quota for new councils, delegates and families were blessed to participate in a prayer service in honor of St. John Paul II where a relic of his blood was present for all to venerate.

Thursday concluded the convention with the traditional Mass for Deceased Knights and the closing business session.

The days spent with Brother Knights were truly a chance to recharge and reenergize for the upcoming fraternal year. It was a chance to better understand the good works that the Knights do and to focus on our mission of spreading the Word of God through our works and actions. Truly bringing the vision of Fr. McGivney to life – Charity, Unity and Fraternity.

I’m taking this opportunity to thank all of the councils, parishes, companies and individuals who have donated to the Nebraska Knights Disaster Relief fund. Because of these donations we have been able to distribute $28,000 to many deserving families in the Pilger and Beaver Crossing areas that were affected by the tornadoes.

Below is a listing of contributors we have received at the time this article was written. The generosity has been overwhelming and is deeply appreciated by all. Thank you very much!

Is your Council in good standing? Per Capita was due September 1.

Every billable member of the Knights of Columbus is accessed by State and Supreme councils. This state assessment is the per capita invoice each council’s financial secretary receives twice each fiscal year. This payment does not require a council vote, so prompt payment should not be an issue.

Per capita is to be paid with council dues. Currently, the State Council assessment per billable member is $8.75, with $4.38 billed July 1, 2014, due by September 1, 2014; and $4.37 to be billed Jan. 1, 2015, due March 1, 2015.

Remember, a billable member does not include disabled and honorary life members.

As your State Secretary, I am responsible for billing and collecting per capita payments. While a majority of our Nebraska councils have remitted payments in time, I also must report several of our councils missed the September 1 deadline for paying this assessment. The Grand Knight and Financial Secretary of each of these councils should have recently received a Second Notice billing. Prompt response to this matter would be greatly appreciated and help avoid possible suspension which would affect eligibility for state and Supreme awards.

Feel free to contact me with any questions regarding State Per Capita and thanks for all you do!

See how to reduce your council’s Per Capita with every new member you recruit on page 14

ORDER ADDITIONAL BOXES

After you purchase an initial case of assorted cards, you can order more of the individual boxes of cards that sell well for your council. The cost varies with each different type of card. See the order form for the shipping/handling charges for the individual boxes.

OTHER ETHNIC VARIETIES AVAILABLE

There is also an additional variety of ethnic cards that can be purchased, i.e.: Tagalog, Native American, African-American, Polish, Italian, Ukrainian and French. See the order form.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS FOR PURCHASE

Other products you can purchase to “Keep Christ in Christmas” are such items as yard signs, lapel pins, ornaments, car magnets, Christmas seals, and other cards that are not in the original box of assorted cards. See the order form.

Take advantage of the special pricing and your council will help “Keep Christ in Christmas” and also earn money that can be donated to a needy family or special cause this Christmas time.

“Keep Christ in Christmas” cards will be available at the July seminar in North Platte this year. Plan to take a case of assorted cards back to your home council at the “early bird” prices.

Then order more at the regular price for your council to sell.

“Keep Christ in Christmas” order form is available online at www.nebraskakofc.org/resources/pdfforms/KCIC14.pdf

I ask for every Council in Nebraska to consider supporting the “Keep Christ in Christmas” program. This program was started in 1995 and continues to grow throughout the USA.

Last year (2013) in Nebraska alone Knights distributed 32,610 Spiritual messages in Nebraska and raised $10,653 for charity in Nebraska in 2013.

Nationally 865,842 spiritual messages were distributed by the Knights of Columbus and $192,072 was raised for charity through the Christmas Card program.

I would like to see more councils purchase the Christmas Cards for distribution in Nebraska. They come in English and are also available in seven other languages, including Tag-a-log, Native American, African-American, Polish, Italian, Ukrainian, French and Spanish. All of the cards send a wonderful spiritual and cultural message. The St. Francis card has a special prayer card of Pope Francis.

Please consider joining this program.

2014 “TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE”

Knights of Columbus Campaign for People with Intellectual DisabilitiesDon and Terri Hypse, State Health Directors | 402.375.4574 home | 402.369.0814 mobile | [email protected]

Discontinuation of Tootsie Roll Funds to Nebraska ESUs

For many years, the Intellectual Disabilities Foundation (formerly the Mental Retardation Foundation) permitted proceeds from the State Council Tootsie Roll fundraiser to be donated to Nebraska Educational Service Units (ESUs). After careful review of the Foundation’s organizational documents and applicable state and federal law, the Foundation’s Board determined that donations to an ESU did not meet the Foundation’s stated purpose and needed to be discontinued.

The Board and its consultants include public and parochial school career educators and administrators, Nebraska ESU administrators, legal counsel, and numerous other professionals, and none of them doubt the outstanding efforts of ESU administrators and teachers to assist students with disabilities. The underlying reason for discontinuing

ESU donations concerns the broad scope of services the ESUs provide. Simply put, because ESUs provide services to students with intellectual and physical disabilities without distinguishing between the two, the Foundation will violate its narrowly drawn charter if it provides funds to an ESU and those funds are used to provide assistance to a child that has only physical disabilities (one without intellectual disabilities). Needless to say, the Foundation needs to avoid putting itself in violation of the laws by which it is governed.

The Foundation’s Health Services Directors, Don and Terri Hypse, stand ready to assist with locating a worthy organization that provides assistance exclusively to the intellectually disabled and to which the Foundation may donate funds. See their contact information at the top of this page.

Ken LeRoy, State Advocate | [email protected]

On September 11, 2014, Governor Dave Heineman proclaimed October 5-11, 2014, “Support Citizens with Intellectual Disabilities Week” and encouraged the citizens of Nebraska to support the Knights of Columbus in their efforts to raise money to support groups who serve people with intellectual disabilities.

Hundreds of Brother Knights from Councils around the state will be placing canisters in stores, soliciting door to door, greeting people entering shopping areas, and even asking for donations after weekend Masses as they carry out the Order’s longstanding fundraiser. The campaign has been referred to as “The Tootsie Roll Drive” because of the very visible thank you of a Tootsie Roll that Knights hand out as they seek donations. The funds collected are used at the state and local levels to fund worthy projects and organizations who work directly with the intellectually disabled.

The Nebraska Knights of Columbus Intellectual Disabilities Foundation allocates the money and its distribution according to its charter as a non-profit entity. The Foundation looks for worthwhile projects and works to get money to deserving groups around the state. Funds from the October 2013 drive went to a variety of organizations including groups such as ARC, Special Olympics, MOSAIC, and therapeutic riding groups. Sizable donations of $10,000 each were presented to Omaha’s Madonna School and to Waverly’s Villa Marie Home and School.

All funds collected during the October 9, 10, and 11, 2014, Knights of Columbus Campaign for People with

Intellectual Disabilities should be mailed by January 31, 2015 to: Health Services Directors, Don and Terri Hypse1019 Sherman Street, Wayne, NE 68787

The Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities reporting form should accompany the Council’s check. That form is the one Councils use to request 50% of their net proceeds back for distribution to organizations meeting the criteria outlined by the state Intellectual Disabilities Foundation.

Some groups with whom local councils might choose to share Tootsie Roll money could include the following:

Knights of Columbus Earns Top Rating from A.M. Best for 39th Consecutive Year

Citing the Knights of Columbus’ strong presence in Catholic communities and its members’ loyalty, ratings agency A.M. Best reaffirmed the K of C’s rating of A++ (Superior) for financial strength.

The rating announcement marks the 39th consecutive year that the Knights of Columbus earned A.M. Best’s top marks. The Order has $94 billion of life insurance in force and $21 billion in assets under management. No insurer in North America is more highly rated than the Knights of Columbus.

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said, “We were founded to protect the financial futures of Catholic families. We take that obligation seriously. In our sales, operations and investments, we keep in mind that Knights and their families are more than customers. They are members of our fraternal family.”

Earlier this year, the Knights of Columbus was named a 2014 “World’s Most Ethical Company” by the

Ethisphere Institute — an independent center for research promoting best practices in corporate ethics and governance. It was one of two

companies named in the “life insurance” category, and one of fewer than 150 total companies worldwide.

A.M. Best noted that the rating of the Knights of Columbus “reflects its strong fraternal and insurance presence within the Catholic communities in the United States and Canada, its strong risk-adjusted capitalizations as measured by Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio, and its consistently positive statutory operating results.” It added that the Knights of Columbus “has a strong affinity with its large membership base through its charitable programs and competitive portfolio of life insurance and annuity products.”

The Father Timothy P. Molony Council 2681, Scottsbluff, NE, has something that very few Councils can claim. With the addition of Brother Knight Tyler Wolf, they now have four generations of Knights in the same Council.

Tyler joins his great grandfather, Robert Wolf Sr., his grandfather, Robert Wolf Jr., and his uncle, David Wolf, as a member of Council 2681. Tyler had taken his First Degree on 10/03/2003 and his Second and Third Degrees on 10/27/2013. Tyler’s First Degree was held in honor of his uncle, Specialist James (Jamie) Wolf, who was a member of Council 2681 and was killed while serving his country in Mosul, Iraq.

Bob Jr. joined Council 2681 in January, 2000 along with James. Bob said “It was because of Jamie that I joined the Knights. I was blessed to be able to spend time with him working on different projects like the Tootsie Roll drive and Knight’s breakfast before he went into the Army. I had intended to not be involved in the Council after James left but found myself drawn to the fraternity of the Knights and all of the great things that the Council did.”

Bob Sr. had originally joined the Knights in Montana in the late 60’s but after relocating a few times hadn’t been involved at all. He reinstated in the Scottsbluff Council in 2004 after seeing all the Knights did for the family after losing James. Not only did he join the Council in Scottsbluff but also did his Fourth Degree in Assembly 1874. Even though Bob lives in Montana, Council 2681 is the only Council that he wants to belong to because as he say’s “It’s Jamie’s Council.”

David took his First, Second and Third at Scottsbluff in April, 2004 at an Exemplification held in honor of his brother James. It was one of the largest Degree’s that the Council had ever held with David, Chuck Swank, Jamie’s

best friend, and Chuck’s dad, Ron, among the candidates. Dave felt that it was something that he should do to honor the memory of his Brother. He had also seen what the Council had done for the family and had gotten to know more of the Knights in the Council. Since joining Dave has become very active in the Council and held Directors posts, the latest being Public Relations Director and has started the council’s Facebook page.

All four of the Wolf’s are Insurance members, as was James. The Knights Insurance agent at the time, Allen Lonowski, was one of the first Knights at the house the day James was killed. Allen not only handled James’s Knights policy but also helped the family with his U.S. Army policy. Bob has said “I don’t know of any other insurance agent that would do that, but other insurance agents aren’t Brother Knights.”

Bob Sr., Bob Jr. and David are also Fourth Degree Knights in Assembly 1874, and Tyler will be as soon as there is a Fourth Degree exemplification close by.

James received his Fourth Degree posthumously at the Nebraska State Convention in 2004. Due to the work of Jack Revelle, Thomas Moreno, John Smith and Allen Koliha Supreme awarded James his Fourth Degree pin and Baldric. Jamie had always wanted to join the Fourth but never got the chance.

As you can see, Council 2681 means a lot to the Wolf family. Five members of the family have served the Council and to this call it home. They hope to keep helping to grow the Council through these four generations and on to the next.

RECAP OF STATE GOLF TOURNAMENTA few weeks ago we held the State Golf Tournament. It

was smaller than it has been in previous years, but it was certainly a fun event. There was a solid group of Knights that decided that they wanted to enjoy some fraternal fun, play a couple rounds of golf, and have a phenomenal meal with their Brother Knights. We even had one Knight that made sure that he joined the Order in time so he could enjoy the golf tournament!

Thanks to Awarii Dunes Golf Course and Paul Younes and his staff at the Holiday Inn in Kearney for their help in providing a wonderful venue for the golf tournament. They helped make this a truly great experience. The great thing about this tournament was that there was some amazingly good golf played.

Congratulations to the winning golfers. Aaron Goodenberger won the first flight, shooting 79-81 for a total of 160. He beat out Don Loecker’s 84-78-162. In the second flight, Carter Pratt won with a 94-85-179, and Greg Methe came in second with a 101-87-188.

STATE BOWLING TOURNAMENTThere are several exciting athletic events coming up.

Please be on the lookout for information about the State Bowling Tournament.

News from the Fourth DegreeTo all Sir Knights:

It has been an honor and privilege to serve each and every Sir Knight as your District Master for the past 4 years. I greatly appreciate the hospitality afforded

me from all of the assemblies during your honor/color guards, dinners and events. You should be proud of what the 4th degree

means to the Knights in the State of Nebraska. You are the Knights symbol and I am proud to be apart of this fraternity of men.

The next four years we will be lead by our new District Master, James Haiar. James is excited and I am sure honored to lead the future of the 4th degree in the state. Please welcome and show District Master Haiar the same hospitality that you have given me.

I look forward to serving under our new District Master Haiar and thank all Sir Knights for the friendships given to me during the past 4 years.

Fraternally,

Don Ferneding, Former District Master

James “Jim” HaiarImmediate Past State Deputy

During the months of July and August, 52 new members were added to our fraternity. Fifty two new members to help promote and do the charitable works of the Knights of Columbus. Fifty two members averaging just 20 hours of volunteer work will add over 1000 hours of volunteer services. How many organizations do you know that would like to have an additional 25-40 hour weeks of volunteer services? Thank you for your efforts. It is and was very appreciated.

If you would like help with your October membership drive please ask. The membership team will gladly do anything to help assure your success.

PER CAPITA REDUCTIONRemember . . . each Council that brought a new member

into the Knights during the months of July and August will receive a reduction in their per capita assessment of $5.00 per each new member. Councils can do as they wish with these funds.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO RECEIVE YOUR REDUCTION IN PER CAPITA!

During the months of July thru October every Council that has exemplified a total

of 4 new members will also receive an $80.00 reduction in per capita billing.

If you exemplify 8 new members you will receive a $160.00 reduction. Again, Councils can do as they wish

with these additional funds.

THE GLASS IS HALF FULL! By the end of December, if your Council has met 50% of quota, you

will receive a $100 rebate in your per capita.

If you have any questions on incentives please call any of the state officers or anyone on the membership team.

Remember, a new member is not about just a number but about growing the Order. It is about new programs, activities and fresh ideas. It is about what we can do for our clergy, our families, our communities, our youth and ourselves. We need everyone’s help; we need you and your new member.

Every New Member Helps Grow the OrderDon Ferneding, PSD, State Membership Director402.223.6660 home | 402.943.6320 mobile | [email protected]

Please think of programs as a part of membership. Each time an activity is conducted it is an opportunity to involve a new Knight or invite a prospective Knight to help. For instance, maybe you have some prospective Knights and just haven’t been able to convince them to join. Try asking them to help your council members and their families conduct the “Coats for Kids,” a Supreme program*, a “Wheel Chair Drive,” or maybe a project for the parish. It will create interest and before long he will likely want to be a Knight because of having witnessed firsthand what being

a Knight is about. If you can involve his family, many times his wife will help convince him to join.

Consider the same experience for a Knight who is new to the Order. The majority of inactive Knights are inactive because they “never do anything.” Get the new Knight and his family involved in your council activities and programs. It is a way to keep him engaged and active in his council and will aid with member retention. * Find information on “Coats for Kids” at www.kofc.org

“The Life & Legacy of Father McGivney” on DVDThis one-hour program chronicles the inspirational life story of Father Michael McGivney, a young Catholic Priest who founded the Knights of Columbus organization. During his 38 years of life, he made an enormous charitable impact on his parish and eventually millions of people around the world.

Bob Brown has secured copies of this program for councils’ individual use and are available for purchase at $3.00 per DVD plus $1.00 postage per DVD with a maximum of $5.00 postage. Postage is not applicable if personally delivered.

State Youth Activities

The Knights of Columbus continues to support our youth through great activities and right now is the “busy season” for planning and coordinating all of the contests for your council. Make sure that you take a look at all of the activities listed below and start preparing your council for them. If your council has not participated in these events in the past, consider starting them as a new project.

Knights of Columbus Soccer ChallengeBy now councils across the state have finished their

Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge and the District Competitions will be happening very soon. If your council

has not set a date for your Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge, it’s not

too late. You can order your Soccer Challenge Kit from the Supreme Website (http://www.kofc.org/un/en/forms/council/SC-KITOnline) or

by calling the Knights of Columbus Supply Department. Your District Deputy

may also be able to help you get the forms and paperwork that you need in order to run a contest.

Make sure you are working with your District Deputy though in order to make sure that your participants will be eligible to compete in all of the levels of the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge. If you have any questions about running a Council Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge, please feel free to contact me for ideas.

The State Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Grand Island Central Catholic High School. Participants will be able to start checking-in at 10:00 that morning and the competition will begin at 11:00. Make sure to keep an eye on the state Website for any new information.

Make sure that once your council has completed the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge, a Council Participation Form is filled out (found in the Soccer Challenge Kit) and submitted to your District Deputy, the State Youth Director, and the State Deputy.

Keep Christ In Christmas

Poster and Essay ContestsAnother idea that your council can participate in this

year is the Keep Christ In Christmas Poster and/or Essay Contests. Your council can set the rules for these contests, but they should be similar to those of the Pro-life Essay Contest and the Pro-life Art Contest. Consider displaying the winning posters in your council meeting place or in the church vestibule. Essays could be read at a council-

sponsored event, or, with the permission of the pastor, at Mass, or published in the parish bulletin.

Substance Abuse Awareness

Poster ContestIf your council hasn’t already done so, you should be

ordering your Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest Kit from Supreme (http://www.kofc.org/un/en/forms/council/SA-KITOnline.pdf) and get your plans underway for this contest. The top entries from your council for the Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest need to be turned into your District Deputy by February 1, 2015. From there, the District Deputies will select their top choices and send those on for consideration at the state level.

Knights of Columbus

Free Throw ChampionshipWhile we are right in the middle of the

Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge, it is already time to start your planning for the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. Council level competitions should take place during January in order to give enough time for all of the different competition levels. You can order your Free Throw Kit online at http://www.kofc.org/un/en/forms/council/FT-KITOnline or by calling the Knights of Columbus Supply Department. You will want to make sure that the posters for your Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest are displayed before students leave for Christmas break in order to give them time to make plans for the contest.

We are currently looking at hosting the State Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship in April at Hastings College. More information on this will be given to your District Deputy as we confirm the details. Make sure to check information in upcoming Courier issues and on the Nebraska Knights of Columbus Website closer to the beginning of the new year.

It’s never a bad time to consider a gift to the Knights Foundation, an Endowment Fund set up to receive your contributions of CASH, SECURITIES, LIFE INSURANCE, BEQUESTS and REAL ESTATE. The money is deposted into a permanent fund where the principal earns interest into perpetuity. The interest is then used to provide grants to charitable projects and programs and your gift will be tax deductible (check with your tax advisor). Don’t let January 1, 2015 sneak up on you. Give your gift today!

Meet the New KCNSC Foundation Directors

The Four Core Principles of the Knights of Columbus are Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. The most important of these is, and will always be, Charity.

Knights recognize that our primary mission and goal in life, as well as our faith in God, moves us to action. There can be no better way to accomplish this goal than through our own love and compassion expressed in life by assisting others in need. This must be our call to service every day we are able to help those less fortunate sons and daughters of God. This is the sole reason and purpose for the Knights of Columbus Nebraska State Council Foundation.

The Foundation was established in December, 2001, as an endowment fund to receive donor contributions. Gifts of cash, securities, life insurance, charitable bequests and real estate form the principal of this fund which cannot be spent. Under solid management this principal investment continues to earn interest and other income annually. These earnings are then used to provide income for charitable projects and

programs, including various programs administered by the Knights of Columbus Nebraska State Council.

When giving to the KCNSC Foundation, a Sec. 501(c)(3) organization, contributions are also deductible for tax purposes when itemizing deductions on your annual federal and state income tax returns.

In Nebraska our Brother Knights Jerry Smith, PSD, and Manny Gallardo are serving as directors for the Knights of Columbus Nebraska State Council (KCNSC) Foundation. If you have further questions please contact Jerry or Manny by calling or E-mailing them.

Thanks for doing all you can to assist our Knights Foundation with your charity expressed in profound love for God and His less fortunate children.
