Definitions Dementia is a term that covers a group of different illnesses in which there is a progressive and irreversible loss of mental functioning that results in a decline in the person’s ability to think, reason and remember. A feature of dementia is the individual and changing nature of the cognitive, functional, behavioural and psychological effects that occur.
A communication partner is a person who the person living with dementia prefers to communicate with. This person may be a spouse, family/whānau member, staff member or friend.
Verification is a process undertaken by a verifier and/or assessor. They may verify authenticity, the validity of evidence and/or the trainee’s workplace performance.
Culture includes but is not limited to cultures based upon:
age.
class.
disability.
ethnicity.
gender.
sexual orientation.
cultures can include identification with a culture through birth, adoption, genealogy or
whakapapa.
Assessment note
Candidates’ practice must reflect appropriate values, processes, and protocols in relation to working with Māori, Pasifika and/or people of other cultures, in a range of settings and environments. In this assessment candidates must describe working with a Māori, Pasifika or a person from a culture other than their own.
Task 1: Daily activities and tasks For this task, you need to provide details for two different people living with dementia whom you have supported. For each person you must:
assist them with their personal daily living activities.
support them to engage in meaningful activities.
carry out routine observations/clinical tasks.
One of these two people you support must be Māori, Pasifika or from a culture other than your own. Please name the culture.
Complete all tasks according to your role and your organisation’s policies and procedures.
Complete all the written parts of this task before asking your verifier to complete the observation checklist and verification checklist.
