Wirral Loop Line Track RenewalFrom 3rd January until June 2017, Network Rail will be renewing the track that runs beneath the riverbetween Liverpool and Wirral, and around the Wirral loop line, to keep it efficient for the next 60 years.
The works will be carried out in three phases:
Phase 1: Tuesday 3rd January to Sunday 12th February 2017. For six weeks, all Wirral line trains will startfrom and finish at Birkenhead North and Birkenhead Central stations. Rail replacement buses will run betweenWirral and Liverpool city centre stations.
Phase 2: Monday 13th February to Monday 29th May 2017. For 15 weeks, all Monday to Friday Wirraltrains will start from and finish at James Street station. At weekends, all trains will start from and finish atBirkenhead North and Birkenhead Central stations. Rail replacement buses will run between Wirral and Liverpoolstations.
Phase 3: Tuesday 30th May to Sunday 18 June 2017. For 20 days, all Wirral line trains will start from andfinish at Birkenhead North and Birkenhead Central stations. Rail replacement buses will run between Wirral andLiverpool stations.
To reduce the impact the works will have on your journey, there will be plenty of alternative public transportprovision - high quality rail replacement buses with express services and the option of taking a Mersey Ferry orcommercial cross-river bus services. The works will be suspended for special events and over bank holidays.
We need your help in keeping our City Region moving:
Think before you take the car - take public transport to be part of the solution, not the problem. The •Mersey Tunnels can accommodate additional buses but they will not be able to cope with a significant increase in cars without causing lots more congestion, particularly at peak times.
Leave more time for your journey - it is likely to take significantly longer, especially during peak times.•
Avoid travelling at peak times where possible - speak to your employer whether there is any flexibility •in working times or times you could avoid travelling altogether.
We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
For more information visit www.merseyrail.org/trackrenewal.
Full details of alternative travel arrangements will be available from 10th October 2017.

The rail track that runs between Liverpool and Wirral sits on a concrete base. The base keeps the track aligned and prevents it from moving when changes in temperature cause the metal track to expand. The concrete base and the track are 40 years old and so it is time to replace them.
As part of a £340 million investment in the region’s railway, it’s time for Network Rail to renew the track in order to maintain long-term efficiency and reliability for the next 60 years.
Between January & June 2017, the existing concrete and track between Liverpool and Wirral will be dug out and new concrete and track laid in its place. Once the work is complete, no major renewal work will be needed on the stretch of track for decades to come.
Merseyrail are working hard to develop a rail replacement transport plan that reduces the impact work has on our passengers. More information will be available in the coming months.
In 1977 Star Wars opened at the cinema, in the same year Merseyrail opened the loop line – now it’s time to renew the track
