Peace Studies Students Showcase International Experiences
Th ree Selkirk College Peace Studies students, Stesha Amos, Angelique Ahlstrom, and Angelica Duggan, trav-elled to Zambia and the Philippines in May to study con-fl ict transformation in a cross-cultural setting. Th ey will be speaking about their experience at the Mir Centre for Peace in the Brilliant Cultural Centre in Castlegar on Th ursday, September 13 at 7 pm.
“Selkirk College has partnered with the African Peace-building Institute in Zambia and the Mindanao Peace-building Institute in the Philippines to provide our peace studies students the opportunity to learn about global issues in African and Asian contexts,” states Randy Jan-zen, Chair of the Mir Centre for Peace. “It is crucial forour students to understand concepts of peace, healing and reconciliation from other perspectives.”
Selkirk students spent several weeks living, eating and studying with students from all over Africa and Asia. “I was able to practice hands-on negotiation skills. Also, many of the students in my class had fi rst-hand experi-ence with war and genocide – I learned so much from them,” says Angelique Ahlstrom, one of the students who studies in Zambia.
Admission to the presentation is by donation. Refresh-ments will be served. For more information, please phone 250-365-1234.

OBESITY IN CATSObesity is a serious problem in cats today. Obesity can lead to serious diseases and a shortened life span. Some ways to control and reduce obesity are to increase exercise, lower caloric intake, no treats, and smaller meals throughout the day. Please remember that there are also medical conditions that can make your cat obese, so always check with a veterinarian fi rst.
At the shelter we currently have two wonderful obese cats. Charley is an 8 yr old black female and Megan is a 3 yr old female tabby. Both cats love to sleep in cat houses or cuddle up on the couch next to you. They are both quiet cats that like to watch everything you’re doing. Due to Charlie’s weight issues she came in with really bad dander, so she has recently had a hair cut to help treat this. These lovely ladies would love to fi nd quiet homes to call their own.

Kootenay Terry Fox RunsSunday, September 16, 2012 will see over 9000 Terry
Fox Runs around the world working to raise funds for the single mission of providing funds for innovative cancer research. Last year, the Terry Fox Foundation invested $27.5 million in cancer research in three key areas of re-search: 1) Discovery Research, which is the fundamental science, cure-oriented biomedical work. 2) Translational Research or the moving of discoveries from the labora-tory in the clinic more quickly to impact patients; this is called a “lab bench to bedside” approach, and 3) Training Future Leaders in Cancer Research.
To date the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $600 million and 84 cents of every dollar raised goes to can-cer research. Terry always wanted every Canadian to be able to be part of the fi ght to beat cancer. Th e events are hosted by local volunteers in your community who invite you to attend. Th ere is no entry fee or minimum pledge, just show up and even a donation of a dollar will make you part of the Marathon of Hope.

Family Historians Gather In Castlegar
Th e West Kootenay Family History Society (WKFHS) launches its 21st year of operation on Monday, Septem-ber 10 at the Stanley Humphries High School (720 7th Avenue) in Castlegar.
Th is is the fi rst of the 2012-2013 roster of monthly meetings which focus on topics of interest to family hist-ory enthusiasts. Members of the group share ideas, exper-tise and materials at the meetings, including small group sessions on particular countries and regions where there is common interest.
As a society, the group promotes ethical principles, sci-entifi c methods and eff ective techniques in genealogical and historical research. A key principle is that sources are always cited. Th e arrival of the internet has been a boon
to researchers, but also a challenge because many web-sites have unsubstantiated and incorrect information.
In recent years the society has recorded information in several local cemeteries, as tombstones and cemetery regis-ters can be a valuable source of information on ancestors.
For further information, contact Irene Renz at 250-365-6280 or Sam McBride at [email protected]
Kootenay Storytelling Festival Plans are proceeding nicely for the upcoming Koote-
nay Storytelling Festival and there is much to be excited about. Both regional First Nations, the Ktunaxa and the Sinixt will be represented with stories from Joe Pierre and Marilyn James. Th e Doukhobor perspective will be shared by Wendy Voykin of Castlegar, a very strong storyteller. A young wildlife biology student Olivia Van Jarrett, who works summers in Kokanee Creek Provincial Park as an interpreter, will tell a story about the natural history of the region, and Kootenay Lake will again be the focus of a story from Susan Hulland of Crawford Bay.
Th ere are many interesting anecdotes arising from the organization of such a festival but we need to share one quick story about the Kootenay Storytelling Festival and its participants. Many of you will remember years ago how Carolyn McTaggart’s story Gunpowder Gertie, Pirate Queen of the Kootenays, somehow changed from fi ction to fact and was presented as such on CBC Radio. What began as a simple device teaching history at Red-fi sh School took on a life of its own and went national, culminating in Carolyn’s story gaining some notoriety and becoming a favourite at our festival and elsewhere. Well this year we are featuring Mariella Bertelli, a Toronto storyteller with strong ties to Italy. In an email Mariella informed us that: “In fact I do have another relevant connection, one with the Kootenays and that is through Carolyn McTaggart’s wonderful story Gunpowder Gertie, which, with her permission, I have translated into Italian and performed at the Tall Ship Sailing Festival in Genoa, Italy back in 2007!” So Carolyn’s story has been told in Italian in Italy and this year Mariella and Carolyn will be meeting for the fi rst time in person, sharing the stage and have agreed to “do something special together” as part of the festival’s off erings. Exactly how that will evolve is still a little nebulous but the will is there and the enthusiasm is high. Both are great storytellers.
“Evolve” has become a bit of a key word at the com-mittee. Th e original intent of the festival was to present the history of the Kootenays through oral storytelling. As the festival moves from Procter to Nelson it needs to take on its own energy and focus and as such will, in future, seek to bring storytellers from afar (starting this year with Mariella Bertelli) and allow them to present stories from their own regions and broaden and enrich the experience for the local audience. But we will never forget our roots and the Kootenays will always still play a very strong role in our roster of storytellers and the tales they bring.

A Broken Bone May Be A SignWhile a broken wrist may seem like a harmless injury,
Osteoporosis Canada is reminding everyone that a fractureor broken bone that happens easily from a simple activitysuch as reaching, bending, twisting, coughing or sneezingor from a minor injury such as a fall from standing heightmay be the result of osteoporosis, which can have a signifi -cant impact on quality of life.
Osteoporosis is a chronic and debilitating disease thatcauses the bones to weaken and become brittle, makingthem more likely to fracture. Over 80 per cent of all frac-tures in people over the age of 50 are caused by osteopor-osis, yet many people remain undiagnosed and untreated, putting them at risk for future, and potentially more dam-aging, fractures. Osteoporosis-related fractures are morecommon in women than heart attack, stroke and breastcancer combined.
In spite of known facts about the prevalence and severityof osteoporosis in Canada, many adults are not screenedfor it, even aft er breaking a bone. Consequently, hundredsof thousands of Canadians needlessly fracture each year be-cause their osteoporosis goes undiagnosed and untreated.
“A fracture may be your fi rst and only sign of osteoporosis, and it can lead to more fractures,” says Dr. Famida Jiwa, thepresident and CEO of Osteoporosis Canada. “Any fractureover age 40 means you may need a bone mineral densitytest and a fracture risk assessment. Patients should speak totheir doctor about their risk for fractures.”
By speaking to your doctor about broken bones, unusualback pain, loss of height, and any history of previous falls,it is possible to better understand the risks, to reduce yourrisk of having a fi rst or second fracture, and to live well withosteoporosis. More information, including treatment op-tions, is available online at www.osteoporosis.ca.

Bears, Bears, Bears!!Small black bear entering Kaslo homes! Th ere have been
two such incidences in the past week of a small black bear entering the open doors of homes in daylight hours in up-per Kaslo. While this bear is/has not been acting aggres-sively towards people in any way, bears entering homes obviously puts both people and the bear at risk. It is likely that this bear has been frequenting Kaslo neighbourhoods since spring when s/he was dispersed from its mother. Th e huckleberry crop is scarce this year, and with so much food available in town, why would the bear leave?
When bears continue to fi nd food near people they can be termed ‘food conditioned’. When bears learn that be-ing around people may have little or no negative consequence, the bear can be termed ‘habituated’. Th ere are at least four diff erent food conditioned and habitu-ated black bears frequenting Kaslo neigh-bourhoods and feeding on garbage, fruit, compost, pet food, and other attractants in daylight hours. All of these foods are common anthropogenic sources of cal-ories for bears as they try to fatten up for their winter hibernation.
As fruit season has started, our local fruit tree project is getting under way. Do you have too much fruit? Would you like to harvest free delicious fruit for your own use? Reduce the amount of unmanaged fruit in Kaslo and area by contacting Feed-ing Families, Not Bears at 250-353-1137.
Be Bear Smart and don’t feed bears near your home! Don’t allow bears to become food conditioned; even if a bear is small and alone, you are not doing it any fa-vours to allow it to feed near you. Food conditioned bears are oft en shot as a re-sult of human carelessness as they pose a potential safety risk to people. For more
information please contact the North Kootenay Lake Bear Smart Program 250-353-1137 or email [email protected]
Th e North Kootenay Lake Bear Smart Program is spon-sored by Bear Aware, the Village of Kaslo, RDCK, and Columbia Basin Trust.
