CRITICISM AND
SUGGESTION
16
CRITICIZE…1) There is no explanation on history of beginning traditionalist’s and
modernist’s discourse
Start discussing both Islamic discourse with highlighted their framework, without giving more information on the historical background of thought.
2) Lack of explanation in comparing between traditionalist and modernist discourse.
There are many general main ideas without explaining and elaborating more on it.
In traditionalist discourse’s point, focus more on traditionalist discourse’s framework, but less attention on the factor of resistance to change, to what extent this discourse was accepted by traditionalist Muslim. If this discourse was accepted is there are any problem arising, and how they solve it without the use of reason and only based on revelation.
In term of modernity view, discussed more on the framework of modernity, and less emphasis on the effects of the adoption ideas from the West. To what extent Muslims influences by Western ideas? Is modernity relevant in modern society?
17
CRITICIZE…3) Lack of using examples in explaining the ideas may be difficult
to understand.
There is no examples was included in explaining the tradition's and modernist’s discourses.
4) The use of Arabic term without explains its meaning
The word ‘ijtihad’. May make it difficult for the reader, for example, to the west, to
understand the Arabic term or concept, and if they were not in the field of Islamic studies
18
SUGGEST…1) Give general information or explanation on history of
beginning traditionalist’s and modernist’s discourse in Muslim world.

Developed in many Islamic countries by early 20th century, Western education system from primary school to universities.
As a result , there have two educational system functioning was create two different classes of intellectual: old –fashioned religious intellectual and new Western-educated intellectual.
19
SUGGEST…3) Give more example in order to understand easily about both of
Islamic discourses.. Early 19th centuries, Muhammad Ali in Egypt (Muslim rulers) realized
their military inferiority to the Europeans Decided that it was necessary to have an army on the European
model, and for this their officers must have some education of European type.
Also realized because of attitude of religious scholars, they could not achieve this within existing educational institutions
Imported European teachers and set up new institution Implement Western educational system
