INTRODUCTION
Over the past decade the Metal Unit of the Material Culture Section, Archaeology Research Division, Canadian Parks Service, has maintained a reference file identifying marks found on metal artifacts. This book is a selection of marks on file that relate primarily to tableware items, from the late 18th century to about 1900. These marks were used on tableware and other small hardware goods made in base metals in Great Britain, Germany, France and the United States. The Parks file has proven to be useful to researchers and archaeologists for identifying the origin and the date range of tableware and related metal artifacts from a variety of archaeological sites.
A V ANT -PROPOS
.. The manufacture of base metals has never had the La fabrication d'objets en metaux non precieux n'a
.. continuous control that has been applied to precious jamais fait l'objet du contr61e strict auquel a ete metals, even where silver-plating was concerned. The variety of metals used for tableware products meant that several differen t metal industries were involved, each with their own particular technology and manufacturing methods.
The base metals used in the manufacture of domestic goods included the ferrous metals, iron and steel, tin alloys (including pewter), and copper alloys such as the brasses and nickel-silver. Tin and silver were used as plating materials. Sheffield and Birmingham were among the large metal manufacturing centres in England that had local registries of marks kept by trade organizations: the Cutlers' Company of Sheffield or the Worshipful Company of Pewterers. These compendiums only include marks used by manufacturers. Marks were also applied to metal goods by wholesalers or factors, and retailers. In some instances there would have been more than one manufacturer, as in the case of many knives in which the blades were made by one manufacturer, the handles by another and yet

a third manufacturer may have finished or plated the final product. The retail firm selling the knives may also have had its own registered mark. In the early 19th century, before there was a viable steel industry in America, knife blades were often imported from Great Britain, but the handles were made by American manufacturers. Thus even the origin of the item is confusing. In the late 19th century many American retailers commissioned such products from well-known manufacturers, but applied their own trade names, as they do to the present time. These, and other such manufacturing complexities, were common throughout the period concerned, but the mark on the final product usually provides some indication of the source of the artifact.
Many companies manufacturing small hardware items, such as hand tools and tableware, were in existence for a long period of time, using the same mark or marks. Many marks used by firms with established reputations were bought by a successor who continued their use long after the original company had ceased operation. Thus, it may appear that the same mark was used by more than one manufacturer until the dates of the two companies are compared. When a mark has been in use over a prolonged period, as it has in many British firms, the dating of a particular piece may have to be determined on stylistic grounds, or on an analysis of the metal or metal technology used in its manufacture.
In Canada all tableware in base metals was imported from Great Britain, Europe or the United States until the final years of the 19th century. Several American firms established branches in Canadian cities during the 1880s. Although some casting and stamping was done in a few of these plants, much of the work was in the finishing or plating of items that were made in the United States. A few Canadian companies, which manufactured sterling silver goods, often made small quantities of base metal items that were silver-plated.
vi
Donc it semble que Ie meme poin~on

The examination of archaeological material and source documents such as retailers' records show that nearly all tableware goods were imported from Great Britain until the 1870s. After the U.S. Civil War, American manufacturers became successful rivals for the Canadian market. During the 19th century, most of the common tableware goods were sold through ironmongers or hardwaremen, with the finer silver-plated goods to be found in jewelry or watchmakers' shops. Department stores and mailorder houses supplied many of these wares to the consumer towards the end of the century.
As tableware was often only a small portion of the total production of many of the larger manufacturers, the entries listed in this work may also prove useful in identifying marks on other basemetal objects such as edge tools, building hardware, household utensils and toiletry items .
VII

All company names, trade names, words or letters used in marks are listed in alphabetical order and cross-referenced with illustrations of the marks. As many of the marks are pictorial, or use geometric forms or numerals, two additional lists are provided that are cross-referenced to the alphabetical index: a list of trademarks with numbers, and a pictorial list organized alphabetically by description of the subject matter. The cross-referencing is particularly important to archaeologists as the marks on artifacts are usually partially obscured by corrosion or breakage. There is a fourth index for those unidentifiable symbols that have not been listed elsewhere .
The entries are arranged in the following manner:
KEY - the word or letters used in the mark, or the key word in the name of the company listed.
NAME - the full name of the company written according to historical references and the name of the company's plant when available .
PLACE - the geographic location of the company. All locations are set in Great Britain unless otherwise stated .
DA TES - the date the firm was established and the date of termination. When a date is in brackets, it refers to a year in which the firm was known to be in operation and using the trademark .
GOODS - the type of goods the firm is known to PAR ARTICLE - Ie type d'articles que l'on sait avoir ete fabrique par l' entreprise.
have manufactured. In many cases the reference cited has stated the class of goods for which the firm has obtained trademarks under British export regulations. Class 12 included "Cutlery and edge tools, such as
ix
Knives, Forks, Scissors, Shears, Files and Saws." In this book I have listed "Cutlery of all kinds." A second class, Class 14, included "Goods of precious metals including aluminium, nickel, Britannia metal, etc., and ... imitations of (precious metals)" (Hughes 1892: xvii-xviii). Here this description is interpreted as "Goods in various metal alloys."
REFERENCES - the dates of source references in which more details can be found. The references are listed below in chronological order.
ILLUSTRA TIONS - all the illustrations were prepared approximately to the same scale for clarity. The marks may have appeared in various sizes according to the space available on the goods, e.g. the marks on a spoon handle may have been reduced in size from that appearing on the base of a large serving dish.
Note - When a company is known to have used only its name as a trademark there may be no accompanying illustration as the mark would be self-explanatory.
x

Trade term for nickel-silver, German silver, or Neusilber as it was called in Germany when it was developed ca . 1828 .
175
This metal was an alloy of copper and nickel, white in colour, somewhat resembling silver. Although it contains no silver it was often used as an imitation of silver. After 1850 it was the most common base used for electroplating with silver. There were many variations in the formula for this alloy which were individually patented by manufacturers .

INDEX TO NUMBERS USED IN TRADEMARKS
Roman numerals are listed under the Letters and Names Index. Some trademarks were positioned sideways so that it is difficult to tell whether a number is a 6 or a 9. Generally, symbols were on top and numbers on the bottom of marks and that assumption is used here.

INDEX TO PICTORIALS AND SYMBOLS USED IN TRADEMARKS
Interpretation of pictorials and symbols is subjective; there is no universal identification system. There may be two or more words appropriate to describe a given symbol, for example, asterisk, star or sunburst. If more than one identifiable symbol is apparent on a trademark such as an anchor inside a star, check under both anchor and star .
