2017 Big R Show!So by now you should be ready for the Big R Show and Industry Week beginning October 28th.
Planning is essential for the Big R Show and Industry Week, so many people and so little time to meet everyone. You definitely need to plan an agenda, I find Dinner meetings fill up very fast and you are left with Lunches and Breakfast meetings to conduct business or meet new Customers/Suppliers.
If possible, arrange these meetings prior to your trip to Las Vegas, otherwise its first come, first served, for getting quality
time with Customers, Suppliers, and Partners. I am excited about the Exhibitors we have booked for the Big R Show as well as the seminars. Just the potential of learning new things at the seminars can pay for your trip in the long run. Be inquisitive, ask questions, and participate to get the most out of your trip. You know me, I preach networking, make sure you meet someone new or a new business you haven’t met before, widen and expand your network. This is crucial to long term success, the more contacts you meet and add to your rolodex (OK, I-Phone), the more opportunity and success you will have in the long term. People underestimate the value of meeting people whose services you might not need today but might need tomorrow. When you have a name and a company that you have previously met and had a conversation with someone who can help you in the future, this can save you a lot of time and possibly money. Knowing who to call is half the battle, being able to call the right person for the job or solution is huge. Knowing how to get in the front door of a business because you have a name and a number is even bigger, don’t underestimate these shows.
I wish you a great and prosperous Big R Show, enjoy the week in Las Vegas and make new contacts, you won’t regret it!
I always welcome response or rebuttal to my comments at [email protected]

Report from Global Remanufacturing SummitAccording to statistics, in 1994 there are 24 million cars in the world scrapped; in 2004, only in the United States 31.5 million computers was abandoned, the survival of the human environment is facing increasing pressure on equipment waste, in the face of such a large number of waste disposal equipment, how to minimize the waste of materials and energy, reduce environmental pollution, maximize the reuse of resources, has become an urgent problem to be solved. Remanufacturing is the best way to solve the waste of resources, environmental pollution and renovation of waste equipment. It is an important way to realize the principle of “recycling” in the principle of “reduction, reuse and recycling” of circular economy, it is also the key measures for electromechanical products recycling. Therefore, the development of remanufacturing technology and remanufacturing industry has been the consensus of many

insightful people, it also has great significance for promoting China circular economy development and accelerating the resource-saving society.
For this, the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA) and the US-China Investment and Trade General Chamber of Commerce jointly hosted the Global Automotive Recycling Reusing and Remanufacturing Industry Chain Development International Summit. Many industry leaders and other industry associations and remanufacturing research experts and professors and industry leaders to jointly analyze the latest global remanufacturing industry policy and strategic targets, market trends. Through analyzing the problems faced by the development process of foreign auto aftermarket, we can provide reference for the development of China’s automotive
aftermarket, and put forward some suggestions and preventive measures for the challenges facing the development of the industry.
APRA President Joe Kripli PresentationJoe Kripli pointed out that the annual output of American vehicles is about 17 million , China is 21-22 million, and the world’s annual output is about 70 million, China and the United States auto production accounted for half of global production. Kripli believes that enterprises should shoulder their responsibilities while developing the economy. Production has brought a lot of environmental pollution problems, and it will also affect the survival of generations. At the same time, resources are becoming scarce, and the

Awhile back we had a customercome into our shop stating,
“The vehicle sometimes has a VSC(Vehicle Stability Control) errorand won’t go past fourth gear, buttoday it seems fine.” The vehiclewas a 2007 Lexus LS460 with132,561 miles, and equipped withan AA80E 8-speed transmissionand a 4.6L engine. As with routinediagnosis, I started with a roadtest, a scan of all modules, and anundercar inspection.
The scan procedure came backwith four DTCs: P0771 (shift sole-noid E performance), P0796 (pres-sure control solenoid Cperformance), and P2714 (pressurecontrol solenoid D performance). There was also an unrelatedHVAC code stored. Because there
were no VSC or ABS diagnostictrouble codes present, when thecheck-engine light was illuminatedthe system was possibly turningthe VSC system, but at this point itis too early to rule anything out.
On the road test I backed out ofthe parking spot and started on mynormal route. At the first stoplightthe transmission clunked into gearwhile coming to a stop, and when Iaccelerated I could tell the trans-mission was in a higher gear.Oddly enough, the vehicle wouldtry to shift once in a while aftertaking off from a stop, but most ofthe time the transmission stayed inthird gear (Figure 1).
As I pulled the vehicle into thebay door to do an undercar inspec-tion and to finish my initial evalua-
tion, I put the car in reverse andhad a five-second delay followedby a very, very hard reverse en-gagement. I tried to duplicate thedelay a few more times with variedresults, sometimes it went intogear with no issues and sometimesit had a hard delayed-reverse en-gagement. Underneath the vehicleI checked the fluid (which wasdark) and I noticed that the wiringcoming out of the transmissionconnector looked oily. Eventhough the VSC light didn’t illumi-nate on the initial test drive, Icould tell there was still a problemthat needed to be addressed. Dueto the oil-soaked harness and thesolenoid codes it was time to rec-ommend further testing. The cus-tomer agreed and left the vehicle
with us to proceed. I wanted to get as
much technical in-formation about thistransmission (even ifit was unrelated tomy problem) beforeI went any further. Itook a look at the di-agnostic troublecode informationand flow charts, andsurprisingly the in-formation for P0771and P2714 directedme to start withP0796 (pressure con-trol C performancecode) if all three
DTCs were present. I started witha simple battery and alternatortest, which the vehicle passed.Next, I raised the vehicle back upand proceeded to disconnect andinspect the transmission connectormore closely due to the possiblefluid weeping through. As Ithought, the ATF was pushingthrough the connector (figures 2 &2A).
Curiosity got the best of me andI unplugged the transmission har-ness, let the vehicle down and
shifted between park and drive toreverse multiple times. Just as I as-sumed, I had a reverse engagementevery time, albeit very firm andquick, as expected. I carefully dis-assembled the connector, cleaningit with electrical contact cleaner(Deoxit D5) and drying out theconnector socket at the transmis-sion. I started next, with checkingfor B+ at the ECM connectors forthe solenoids, next I removed theE6 and E7 connectors from theTCM and started with a simple re-
sistance test through the solenoidcircuits (Figure 3).
The specification for the SLT(P2714) and SL3 (P0796) solenoids(which are linear solenoids) is 5.0-5.6 Ω, and 11-15 Ω for the SR(P0771) solenoid which is one ofthe two on/off solenoids in thetransmission. I found 5.6 Ω at theSLT solenoid and 5.5 Ω at the SL3solenoid. Both were in spec, butthe SR solenoid showed 47.3 Ωwhen checked. Next, I checked re-sistance from the transmission con-nector to the TCM connector tomake sure my SR solenoid wiringwasn’t shorted to ground any-where. I found 0.3 Ω from thetransmission connector to the TCMconnectors on all three solenoidcircuits. I knew that the probablecause of my problem was the SRsolenoid, but since I was already atthe TCM and had my scope handyI wanted to see if I could watch thethree solenoids before while get-ting the vehicle to act up (Figure4).
When reverse was engaged theSR solenoid dropped from 12v tozero v, which showed it was beingpulled to ground as it should be.After removing the pan, the SR so-lenoid checked directly at the sole-noid was 47 Ω. I conceived myrecommendation: Replace the SRsolenoid and the internal wiringharness to address the customerconcern and the connector leak.
Even though the case connectorhas plenty of clearance betweenthe valve body and case, the valvebody still needed to be removed tounplug sensor wiring above thevalve body (Figure 5).
I removed the filter and un-plugged the solenoids. Next, I re-moved the e-clip that secures themanual valve. There are 17 boltsthat needed to be removed, and 3different lengths used holding thevalve body to the case (see Figure4).
above valve body need to be ac-counted for when going back in.After installing the harness andputting the valve body back in, Iinstalled the new SR solenoidwhich checked at 13 Ω like itshould have. One thing to note isthat the transmission fill procedureon this vehicle is very specific andtoo long to include in this article,so if you work on one of theseunits be sure to refer to service in-formation when setting the fluidlevel.
After getting the transmission
filled up, checked and recheckedagain, I was ready to see how thisvehicle is supposed to normallydrive (Figure 6).
The vehicle shifted great, andafter a few long road tests I wasconfident that the original issuewas addressed and repaired, so thevehicle was then delivered to thecustomer.
One month later the vehicle re-turned to me with the customercomplaint of, “The check VSC lightis on, but it is shifting OK at thistime.” This time the VSC light wasilluminated along with the checkengine light. A quick code scan re-vealed a P0171 (system too leanbank 1), and C1201 (engine controlsystem fault) which sets the checkengine light and the VSC light. It’s
usually never a great thing when avehicle comes back, but in this caseI could verify the transmission op-eration over a longer period oftime and refer the customer to ashop that could address his en-gine-related codes.
I wanted to bring attention tothis one because one of the issuesthat we have seen lately is othershops not spending time to look atall things related to a warninglight. This nearly identical circum-
stance had happened previouslywhere the customer took his car toa transmission shop with the VSClight on and was referred to a gen-eral repair shop, because “Wedon’t work on that stuff” prior toeven hooking up a scan tool. Thecustomer then goes to a general re-pair facility where he is told that’sa transmission problem, and “Wedon’t work on transmissions,” andthen finally to one of our locationswhere the customer issue is finally

repaired. You can see how frustrat-ing this could be for anyone get-ting this poor level of customerservice. The takeaway is to knowand understand the various sys-tems that are involved in your di-agnosis, and how they relate toeach other.

I am happy to announce another successful step on our long-term strategy of comprehensive membership services. We have just recently installed a European
membership service and back office, thus keeping our backs free and providing us with the necessary support to reach our goal of maximum and straight availability for any request.
By taking this step, we anticipate a couple of advantages, not only for our Board of Directors but especially for our valuable members of APRA Europe:
1. One direct contact person for our European members
2. Quick response times for members’ requests3. Accelerated projects of APRA Europe
Since we decided to set up a back office, we have been seeking intensively for a suitable person. Indeed, I believe we have now found the right cast for this task. He is not a newcomer to our all Remanufacturing business. To the contrary, he had been involved internationally as a researcher, consultant and speaker. He stems from Professor Steinhilpers’ team in Bayreuth, Germany. Meanwhile, he made a career within and for industrial companies. And now he is eager to support APRA Europe’s advancement.
I am talking about Dr. Michael Haumann with whom I made an interview ahead of this edition.
DK: Michael, welcome back to the Remanufacturing business!
MH: Thank you, Daniel. In fact, it feels a little bit like returning to a point where I have been before and which appears pretty familiar to me.
DK: You have been out of this business for a while. Since our first talk about this membership service and back office cooperation, you have dipped back into our industry. Which changes have you recognized since your last contact to Reman?
MH: During the first weeks of our newly established cooperation, I recognized, that many players which I knew from the past have evolved and become even more professional as they might already have been. This refers to companies, organizations, exhibitions and the industry in general which has a very firm position – also thanks to APRA’s as well as other partnering organizations’ efforts in terms of regulation. Especially the last-mentioned topic has undergone a great development. However, times are changing and industries are consolidating and so does Reman. Therefore, some companies were closed, sold, merged or integrated into bigger organizations.
DK: Michael, after finishing your Ph.D. on Variety Management in Remanufacturing, you decided to make a career in the general industry outside the Reman. What exactly did you do?
MH: Based on my experience in optimizing businesses and industrial processes, I expanded on this knowledge and took over responsible positions in internationally acting companies. I was responsible for operational excellence activities, including
APRA Europe to strengthen presence towards members

US and Czech production plants. At the same time and after, I had been commissioned to take over responsibility for a couple of large investment projects within Europe. They ranged from early business planning, factory planning, financing and implementation to sustainability audits after successful ramp-up. Just to name a few activities…
DK: To this background, how come that you do our membership services and back office?
MH: Let me state two reasons for this decision. One is, that in the meantime, I have built up my own consulting business, giving me the freedom to decide which projects I follow and which not. The other one is, that after finding out that you were looking for someone, I thought that your hard work and striving for further advancing APRA Europe would be absolutely supportable - at the same time very efficient with someone who brings in experience with Remanufacturing
processes, companies as well as all the established venues. DK: Indeed! You mentioned your consulting business, what
is your focus?MH: My focus is clearly on advancing SME companies
and my personal mission is to offer both professional analysis and optimization concepts and at the same time provide full implementation support. My consulting services range from cost cutting to business development by optimizing processes, structures and business strategy.
DK: Thank you for this interview. May we advance together APRA Europe, effectively.
MH: Thank you Daniel. I am looking forward to this cooperation with you, the Board, the APRA members and all partners involved.
Our membership services and back office can now be contacted by our members and non-members directly. You can reach out to Michael by [email protected]. n

1967 Corvette Sting RayBy Vern Parker
Jose Rodriguez says he has long been enamored by General Motors products, especially Corvettes.
As the years passed he became more discerning and found himself especially attracted to the 1966 and 1967 model Corvettes. Of course locating such a Corvette model in excellent condition proved to be a daunting task.
Nevertheless, Rodriguez pesisted, remaining alert for his dream car. Then one day in 2014 he saw an ad
offering a restored 1967 Corvette coupe for sale not too far from his home in northern Virginia.
The Corvette was located in Christiansburg, Virginia, so Rodriguez thought even if the car was not as advertised he would still enjoy a pleasant trip down the scenic Shenandoah valley.
Upon first seeing the black Corvette he knew his trip to investigate the car had been worthwhile.
From the four round hidden headlights to the horizontal backup light above the rear license plate the
ISSUE 9/10 | REMAN CONNEC TION 15
car was black, inside and out with the single exception of a splash of red highlighting the bulge on the engine hood.
It didn’t take long for the seller and the buyer to come to terms and the ownership was transferred. Rodriguez went home empty handed but returned a week later with an enclosed trailer to take possession of his coveted Corvette Sting Ray.
Beneath the engine hood is a 427-cubic-inch V-8 engine that develops 390 horsepower. A four-speed manual transmission shifts all that power to the 15-inch red line tires at the rear of the car.
“I love the sound of the engine,” Rodriguez says. The Corvette has a distinct lack of power assisted
features including steering, brakes and windows. “It’s very raw,” Rodriguez says. His car does have a radio which is mounted vertically in order to make the best use of the limited space in the cabin. Both the 7,000 RPM tachometer and the 160 MPH speedometer are clearly visible through the three-spoke steering wheel.
The rumble of the big block engine in the Corvette comes tumbling out through the side mounted exhaust pipes between the 98-inch wheelbase.
A tinted windshield helps keep the cabin temperature under control. Wing vent windows can be adjusted to draw fresh air inside the all black car as well.
Rodriguez has discovered that driving in modern day traffic without an outside mirror on the right side of any car can be treacherous. He has addressed that problem with the addition of a genuine Chevrolet mirror.
Since acquiring the blacker than black Corvette he has fed the engine an exclusive diet of high octane racing fuel which keeps both the car and the owner happy. n

THE TRADITIONAL POWER STEERINGThe traditional power steering (or hydraulic) was made up of a rotating pallet pump driven by the service belt that pressurized the oil that provided the rack (tourist cars) or the steering box (big cars, off-road, vans, trucks).
The hydraulic power steering is a system that works very well but has some defects, or at least some aspects that can be improved:
1. The pump is permanently in operation, even when there is no need, so it generates waste of energy;
2. The oil hoses can obstruct the engine compartment bodies;
3. May be noisy;4. Can have problems with water and salt.
THE EHPSThe first step towards an electrically assisted steering was the replacement of the rotary blade piston driven by a belt, with an electric pump, generally referred to as the EHPS, or Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering.
The main advantages are:1. The pump can be placed anywhere in the engine
compartment, in fact, some manufacturers put it behind the bumper goes to pieces at the first shot!
2. The pump is driven - and therefore consumes current - only when needed, to the benefit of reducing fuel consumption.
The EHPS (images 01 and 02) consists of a CPU (a kind of small computer) that receives three types of data:
1. The speed of rotation of the engine;2. The speed of the vehicle;3. The speed of rotation of the steering wheel (coming
from a special sensor). The data is processed in accordance with the
EPS: What is it & How to Reman it
The EPS has become the most common automotive power steering system. Let’s see how it works and how to reman it.By Carlos Panzieri, Emmetec

manufacturer’s predefined schema, and depending on the combination of parameters, the pump uses more or less current and therefore controls the steering.
Some of the cars that mount the EHPS are BMW Mini, Mercedes Benz Class A, Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia, Peugeot 307, Citroen C4, Fiat Croma, Opel Vectra B and C and many more.
The main problems are water or oil infiltration, brush wear and some electronic problems.
THE EPSThe first type of electrically assisted steering, and therefore free from any type of pump and oil circuit, is the EPS-C or eps Column, such as those adopted (so to name a few), from FIAT Cinquecento, 600, Panda, Idea, Punto 188, Grande Punto, Stilo, Bravo Renault Clio III and Modus III, Toyota Yaris, etc.
The EPS is a single set of components housed around the steering column consisting of the elements of figure 03.
The operating logic (fig. 04) is similar to the EHPS ones, with just two differences: the reading of the rotation speed of the steering wheel is replaced by the reading of the position (angle) of the steering and the torque with which it is driven; the current instead of being sent to the pump, is sent to an electric motor that through a servo gearbox supports the steering.
The most common problems that remanufacturers face are the replacement of torque and position sensors, relays, and some mechanical parts that can wear out.
L’R&P EPSAnother version of EPS is the Rack & Pinion EPS (or EPS Rack), that stands out from the EPS-C because the engine and sensor are moved to the rack.
It can be single-edged (or worm - fig. 05), or double tooth (fig. 06).
The advantage of the EPS-R is that by moving the engine to the rack, the components that transmit the movement and the torque from the steering wheel to the rack, are stressed just by the motorist’s strength and not by the engine, so they wear less. On the other hand, it requires a more powerful engine and all the components return to be out of the cockpit, and in fact they are affected!
The operating logic is identical to the EPS of image 04.Among the cars that adopt this system we can mention
Citroen C2, C3 and C3 Picasso; The Honda Civic VII; The Peugeot 207 and 207 II and the Volkswagen Golf VI and VII.

THE REMANUFACTURINGThe EPS review can be performed with different levels of professionalism.
Typically, it starts by replacing and centering the sensors with a centering device as the ORPAV Z-24003 of figure 07. A second step is to switch to the electro-mechanical components of the pumps. Finally, the last step, is to find and solve all the problems of any power steering thanks to the test benches Vince (image 08) and the rest of the ORPAV range of tools and spare parts.

Understanding and preparing yourself in diagnosing and repairing hybrid, extended range and electric vehicles, along with forward collision, blind spot and other safety systems is imperative in today’s business. This seminar will provide you with the insight on what you need to know and what tools you will need to stay successful in the automotive industry.
