From the President…… Happy New Year from the MRAS Board of Directors and Staff! We hope 2019 is a year of good health, laughter, peace and prosperity for all of you. MRAS Board of Directors for 2019 are Blaine Clark, Bill Niles, Brent Foster (Past President), Colina Clark (Vice President), John McGruther, Joshua Wylie (Secretary), Lainey Luft, Michelle Parry (President), Nancy Seaman (Treasurer), Ralph Onciul, Kelly Hamzic, and Roy Mathis. Brent Foster is continuing with the MRAS Board of Directors as Past President. Brent tirelessly performed in his role as President (2016 – 2018) and Treasurer (2014 -2015) with complete dedication and tenacity. We are very grateful to have Brent’s guidance and support for the 2019 year and thank him for his commitment to the success of MRAS. A very special thank you to outgoing Board members Malcolm Sills and Katrin Wittke for sharing their time and talents in supporting MRAS. Arena Update: • We continue to move forward with fundraising and finishing up some outstanding items in the arena and are hoping to open the arena in the early part of 2019. Arena opening is dependent on occupancy approval from the M.D. followed through with insurance coverage. The Arena rebuild committee is working hard to move this forward. We are anticipating a January 2019 opening! Stay tuned for a confirmed opening date • Our new arena has the potential to be a game changer for MRAS and with that in mind a Planning and Transition Committee was formed in December with a mandate to develop a business plan for the first 5 years of operations for our new arena. Committee members include Nancy Seaman (Lead), Joshua Wilke, Suzanne Sills, Lisa Lloyd and Nick de Waal • In October the Arena fund raising committee set a goal of $350,000 to be raised by end of 2018. As of December 21, the total raised by the committee was $427,116. A very special thank you to the committee for your steadfast efforts and to all who sponsored/donated to exceed this goal Our Event Leads and committees are busy planning for the 2019 events. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact the office for more information. It is a privilege for me to serve the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society and I am excited to see what 2019 will bring. I welcome your comments and suggestions as we move forward. Please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] Kind Regards, Michelle Parry MRAS President

It has now become a yearly tradition for Mrs. Claus and her executive Elf to travel through the MD of Foothills delivering donations to the schools for their hot lunch programs.
The donations are a result of proceeds from the Kids Only Shoppe at the Millarville Christmas Market! This year there were over 930 children that shopped picking up over 3300 items that are handmade by a group of AMAZING volunteers or donated by our FANTASTIC vendors. Every item is under $10 and comes out of the tent a gift-wrapped little secret! The Shoppe was also able to donate a healthy portion to the Arena Rebuild at the Millarville Racetrack.
We started first thing with a pit stop at Timmies (always #1 on a road trip), then headed down to the Longview School. We were greeted by a hallway full of seated children waiting patiently with their eyes closed! They were so excited to see Mrs. Claus and to listen to her story behind the donation to the school! What a place!
From there we traveled to Black Diamond, to Oilfields High School where the office staff and Principal graciously accepted the donation. We were able to sneak into a computer class and share a few hugs and candy canes too, you're never too old for candy canes!
Off to C. Ian McLaren also in Black Diamond. There we were greeted by the Principal and a few students from the school to accept Mrs. Claus’s donation for their hot lunch program. We chatted about the Shoppe and the Fair entries that they had entered yearly.
We were done in Black Diamond and Mrs. Claus was pumped right up! Loving all the hugs, she wanted to waste no time in heading to Turner Valley School.
There we were met by the Principal, whisking us right down to the Kindergarten class. To our surprise, they were in the middle of making gingerbread cookies, cookies made with love, kid love. With the jingle of her bells, Mr. Claus was able to pull them away from their task to have a few minutes with them to hand out candy canes and have a bit of a chat. Thanks for having us TVS!
With an Elf’s offer of a pit stop break, Mrs. Claus was having nothing to do with it.... there were more kids to see! To Millarville Community School we headed.... Once again, greeted by the Principal, we were led to the Kindergarten class. Oh boy, these kids were excited to see her. They were full of questions too! " Mrs. Claus, how did you get here?" (In true style on her special plane!) "Mrs. Claus, how do you bake" (Well, with a recipe of course!) and the stumper " Mrs. Claus, how did you make all those candy canes? (Well, she has people for that!). The kids were kind and sure to tell her about their elves on shelves that were watching!
After each stop on the way to the next, we would giggle over the kids' comments, reactions and the graciousness of the school staff, it was heart-warming! We knew this was coming to an end, we were on our way to Red Deer Lake School. The last of the 6 stops.
We were a little ahead of schedule, which was GREAT, as we were able to get Mrs. Claus about 18 more hugs from the Kinders just about to head out. She quickly dished out a candy cane to each as they made their way to a gathering outside the school. So happy we caught them!
Doing this trip each year is something that we look forward to on many levels. With this donation, we are able to help
in so many more ways than food. The diverse ways that the schools run their programs teach the kids responsibility,
inclusion, compassion, life skills, dedication, appreciation, the list is long.
There are SO many people to thank every time that volunteers SO MANY hours crafting, baking, sewing, collecting,
wrapping, shopping helpers, price taggers, list makers, just volunteering in all ways. And of course, the shoppers! Way
to go this year! Thank you to all of you for your continued support and we will see you in 2019!
