The men’s and wom- en’s hammer throw and triple jump will be performed on Friday, April 5, afternoon starting at 3:30. Events on Saturday kick-off with the women’s long jump at 9 a.m. Adding To Her Collection Senior Jo Adams broke the 23-year-old 1,500-meter run school record on the final day of the Texas Relays grabbing her first outdoor school record. Adams, who owns the indoor school records for the mile and 3,000 meters, ran a personal best 4:19.09 on her way to placing third and being the first collegiate runner to cross the line beating out runners from Texas, Baylor and UCLA Adams moved into first in the 800 meters and 1,500 meters in the SBC Performance List. He’s Got The Strong Arm Senior Aaron Sirles grabbed two top-five finishes in two of his events at the Bob- cat Invitational this past week. Sirles threw 16.84 meters to finish second in the shot put. Sirles then threw 52.58 meters to finish fourth in the discus throw. The senior also grabbed a 10th-place finish in the hammer throw with a distance of 51.99 meters. Adding To Her CollectionSenior Jo Adams broke the 23-year-old 1,500-meter run school record on the fi nal day of the Texas Relays grabbing her fi rst outdoor school record. Carl Sheffi eld is entering his second years as the Director of Track & Field. Since arriving on August 19, 2011, Sheffi eld has led the women’s track & fi eld team to a SBC Outdoor Championship and a runner-up SBC Indoor Championship.
Sheffi eld spent 12 years coaching as a Mean Green track & fi eld assistant coach from 1996 to 2007 before departing for an opportunity to be a performance coach at the Michael Johnson Training Center in McKinney, Texas.
Under Sheffi eld’s guidance as the sprints and hurdles coach at North Texas, his athletes established or tied over 20 school records and earned more than 70 all-conference awards. Th e Mean Green won four team
championships while Sheffi eld was on staff , two on each of the men’s and women’s side.
Sheffi eld’s leadership of the sprints group also led North Texas back to the NCAA Championships in 1999 with the men’s 4x100 meter relay team aft er an 11 year absence. Th ree more sprinters appeard at the NCAA Outdoor Championships under Sheffi eld as Detrion Woodson went in the 100 meter dash in 2001, Ananka Clark in the same event two years later and lastly Kory Williams in the 400-meter hurdles in 2005.
He brings enhanced credentials through his work at the Michael Johnson Training Center where he focused on improving the ability of his athletes to integrate linear speed concepts through biomechanics, motor control and performance analysis.
A native of Dallas, Sheffi eld was one of the top-fi ve hurdlers in the state while attending Skyline High School and attended UTA on scholarship as a high hurdler.
Aft er earning his B.S. from UTA in 1993, Sheffi eld earned his Master of Science from North Texas in exercise physiology in 1996. In addition to his coaching duties, he served as an adjunct instructor for North Texas from 2005-07 for the Department of Kinesiology.

Destroying OrderJust a week after senior Aaron Sirles broke the school hammer throw record, senior John Garrish crushed it by more than 20 feet. Garrish threw 58.34 meters (191-05 feet) on his way to capturing a second place fi nish in the event. Sirles threw a personal-best 52.72 meters (172-11 feet) fi nishing third while senior Cody January threw 51.75 meters (169-09 feet) to fi nish fourth. The new order for the record book is Garrish at fi rst, followed by Sirles at second and January at fourth.
Women Take ChargeThe Mean Green women captured three fi rst place fi nishes in Waco this past week-end. Senior Jo Adams took home fi rst in her fi rst outdoor meet winning the 800-me-ter run with a time of 2:09.37 while senior Haley Thompson jumped 1.65 meters (5-05.00 feet) to win fi rst in the women’s high jump. Junior Sarah Vann catapulted to a fi rst place fi nish with a 3.50 meters (11-05.75 feet) jump in the women’s high jump. In her fi rst appearance of 2013, senior Sarah Korn captured second in the high jump with a leap of 3.50 meters (11-05.75 feet).
Going the DistanceThe Mean Green men’s distance runners’ captured six top-fi ve fi nishes Saturday. Matt Russ lead the way in the 800-meter run at second with a time of 1:53.57 fol-lowed by Austin Yaeger (1:54.10) at third, Troy Taylor (1:54.80) at fourth and Bryce McAndrew (1:55.26) at fi fth. Russ, Yaeger and Taylor moved into the top-fi ve of the SBC performance list in the event. Silvester Harrison took home second in the men’s 1500-meter run with a time of 4:01.35.
First or BustJunior Shahaf Bareni matched her personal-best of 5-11.25 feet on her way to cap-turing her fi rst fi rst-place fi nish of the outdoor season. Bareni, who is the defend-ing Sun Belt Conference champion in the women’s high jump, took home fi rst in four out of six outings in the indoor season. Bareni also stands in the top spot in the SBC standings.
Jaded In JonesboroThe Mean Green track & fi eld teams took second place at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark. The women fi nished with 117.5 points, just fi ve shy of fi rst place, while the men fi nished with 126 points. The men improved from an eighth place fi nish last year.
Rounding Up The ResultsThe Mean Green collectively broke six indoor records throughout the course of the indoor season. Senior Jo Adams now holds the mile and 3,000 meter record while junior Shahaf Bareni took the high jump. Junior Clint Collins broke his own 400-meter dash record while junior Matt Russ took the 800 meters and senior John Garrish took control of the weight throw record. .
Resilient In The RankingsMean Green track & fi eld celebrated the movement in the South Central, which is one of the toughest regions, in the fi nal week of the regional poll for the indoor season. The women jumped from 11th-place up to ninth to become the highest ranked SBC team. The men reamined at No. 13 for the second-straight week.
Party In The C-USAOn May 4, 2012 the University of North Texas was extended and accepted an invi-tation for Conference USA membership eff ective July 1, 2013. North Texas is one of eight schools that will be joining Conference USA. North Texas, the University of Texas-San Antonio, Louisiana Tech University, Florida International University and the University of North Carolina-Charlott e accepted invitations on May 4. On May 17, Old Dominion University announced it was also accepting C-USA’s invita-tion. On Nov. 29, Middle Tennessee State University and Florida Atlantic Unvier-sity also accepted invitations to move to C-USA in 2014.
