This year has flown by, and at the time of publishing, I have enjoyed the challenge of being in the role of general manager sales and marketing with such an enterprising company for almost a year. 2011 has been a year of challenges and changes for CablePrice (NZ) Ltd, ranging from the devastating

earthquake in Christchurch to earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan, all having a major impact on the running of our company.

Business confidence continues to be volatile globally: just when one newspaper is reporting that confidence is improving, another comes out reporting confidence has dipped. CablePrice has successfully moved on from this and we see a confident order book. Our customers are judging the reports themselves, just getting on with business.

We are proud of the new Hitachi EX 2500-6 excavator that is up and running at OceanaGold’s East Otago mine site. Many thanks to our experienced, specialised mining support staff for their involvement. Also, the new Bell Articulated Dump Trucks at the Solid Energy New Vale mine are making their mark. The John Deere product is growing from strength to strength, showing good sales across the board, particularly in forestry equipment and wheel loaders. Scania V8 truck orders are positive after our successful V8 road show that was complimented by recent sales in milk, forestry, line haul and distribution. All up, these sales further cement our confidence in our clients and upcoming product lines, such as our new Hitachi Dash-5 due to come on

line very soon. As such, CablePrice is placing customers first with reliability, lowest fuel consumption, lowest environmental impact combined with highest brand image in the market, all of which is complimented with a wide range of service support and service contracts.

On the head office front, we have had a couple of senior staff changes, and with those come renewed energy, new ideas, fresh thinking and forward vision

We appreciate our customers for continuing to invest in CablePrice’s products, despite the turbulent economic times, and as a result, CablePrice has decided to further invest in the New Zealand economy. After 16 years at our current location, we have decided to move head office and regional workshop operations to a new purpose-built facility in Bell Road South, Lower Hutt, some 500 metres from our present site.

As our customer base continues to grow, we needed a more modern workshop, administration and warehouse building to future-proof our business so that we can continue to provide a professional service to our ever growing list of clients and fleets. To put it briefly, “we’ve simply outgrown our present location”. We look forward to serving all our customers in a refreshed approach in 2012.

I wish you all a very merry Christmas, and a happy and safe new year. Alfons ReitsmaGeneral Manager Sales and Marketing

CablePrice takes pride in acknowledging those who have achieved long-service milestones. The company’s long-service scheme is designed to recognise those who have 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of service, displaying loyalty, dedication and high levels of performance.

In 2011, eight additional staff achieved milestones as part of the company’s scheme of recognising long service.

Special recognition must also go to Peter Johnson from Auckland, for achieving a milestone of 30 years of service. Peter has been a dedicated employee at CablePrice since April 1981.

CablePrice would like to thank all of its employees for their commitment and loyalty, and looks forward to the growing pool of experience in the coming years.

CablePrice, New Zealand’s importer and distributor of Hitachi construction equipment, Scania trucks and buses, John Deere forestry equipment and Bell dump trucks, boosts its commitment to the Wellington region in the form of a new multi-million dollar facility in Bell South Road, Gracefield. This purpose-built building will encompass the head office, Wellington branch, national parts warehouse and distribution centre, all on one site.

Soon to enter its 60th year in business, CablePrice has always called Wellington “home”. In a time when many businesses are either downsizing or relocating to other regions, CablePrice is proud to show its continued commitment to its customers and the Wellington region.

“We’ve outgrown Tunnel Grove. It’s served us well over the past 16 years, but we now need a modern facility with more room, and a head office worthy of a company like CablePrice, one that does justice to the products we represent. We also need a branch workshop facility that aptly suits the customers who have purchased our products, and we feel this move will deliver these factors, and then some,” says Pat Ward, CablePrice general manager of finance and administration.

The new facility will be built in three stages over the next 9 to 12 months: stage one, due for completion in early December, will be the Wellington branch and workshops; stage two, the head office, is due to be completed by April next year; and the third and final stage, a national parts and distribution warehouse, is to be completed before November 2012.

“We look forward to providing our Wellington branch with state-of-the-art workshop facilities. The new building will be bigger with more capacity for trucks: five full-length, 32-metre long bays, plus two specialist construction and forestry equipment bays. In addition, we will be using the latest Skylifts not the old-fashioned, hole in the ground pit. Skylifts make it easier for technicians to work on heavy gear, so that means no more climbing up and down from the pit. Mobile lifting gear and tools etc can be wheeled straight under the equipment being worked on. This will be a lot safer, cleaner and more user-friendly,” says Ward.

Another way that CablePrice is investing in the future is through technical training. In this ever-changing world, the company says that “knowledge is power”. The trucks and machinery sold by CablePrice are some of the most, if not the most, up to date and sophisticated in their class found anywhere in the world, and to maintain them at peak performance requires skilled technicians.

“Part of this new head office facility will include a purpose-built theory training room complete with its own fully-operational workshop, where we will be training technicians from all over New Zealand with the latest tools to a world class level,” says Ward.

New location effective November 28, 2011.41-51 Bell South Road, Gracefield, Lower Hutt.

Phone, fax, email and website details all remain unchanged.

To a lot of you, the name Riki Corley will be a familiar one, as he has worked at the head office of CablePrice for the past four years.

Recently moving to a new role as equipment product manager from the position of equipment product coordinator, Corley’s core responsibilities were the purchase ordering, sales administration and logistical processes for new equipment.

Corley’s new role will see him continue to develop John Deere’s smaller product ranges, while also taking responsibility for the management of the growing market for John Deere construction equipment, including wheel loaders, graders, dozers and the newly-introduced D-series skid steer loaders.

“Corley brings an extensive working knowledge of our construction and forestry range to his new position,” says CablePrice national equipment sales manager, Andrew Crane.

And with an ability to hit the ground running while maintaining a strong focus on product, sales and post-sales support, Corley will be a real asset to John Deere’s customers and sales team alike.

After his success in New Zealand’s local competition, Sam Rowan was selected to represent CablePrice, and New Zealand, in the fourth annual Hitachi Regional Top Technician competition. Rowan, who works for the company’s North Shore branch, travelled to Singapore in April to compete against four other national champions from the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

The competition consisted of both theory and practical elements. The theory examination was to be completed without the assistance of manuals or other external resources. For the practical component of the competition, each contestant had to diagnose and solve identical faults in a specially prepared Hitachi excavator. The main fault, being hydraulic, had to be identified, as well as two electrical faults, all within a pressured time frame of one hour and fifteen minutes – no mean feat!

Competing against highly-trained technicians from around the region – a challenge in its own right – Rowan also had to endure temperatures in excess of 34 degrees while undertaking the practical element of the competition. Working in scorching heat and high humidity in full safety gear, Rowan displayed both stamina and determination, representing CablePrice admirably.

Demonstrating impeccable skill, Rowan was the only competitor to accurately identify and solve the three faults, as well as reassemble the machine completely in the time frame specified. This, combined with the theory element of the competition, resulted in Rowan achieving the highest overall score, winning him the title of “Top Technician” for the Hitachi Asia-Pacific region.

Following on from his win at the Asia-Pacific competition, Rowan will have the opportunity to really test his skills against Hitachi’s top technicians from around the globe at the world finals which are to be held in Japan later this year.

Well done!

NEW SCANIA SALES MANAGER FOR CABLEPRICE

CablePrice has recently introduced Garry Leitch to its truck sales team. Coming on-board as the national commercial vehicle sales manager, Leitch says that he’s “dedicated to ensuring Scania remain a market leader in the medium and in the heavy-duty truck range,” a position that Scania are well known for.

Born in Scotland, Leitch is no stranger to the commercial vehicle and construction equipment industries. He started out within the automotive industry with a main Ford (England) dealership, before moving to New Zealand in 1989 where he took up various roles within Mitsubishi Motors (New Zealand). From 1999, he filled various management roles within Titan Plant Services, with Volvo truck, bus, construction and forestry equipment.

Leitch will compliment an already experienced and motivated CablePrice truck sales team that is dedicated to delivering a high standard of customer service in all facets of the business.

“Leitch’s professionalism and commitment to customer satisfaction will ensure clients receive real value for money, as well as priority attention and care throughout the lifecycle of their truck, not just during the purchase,” says Alfons Reitsma, CablePrice general manager of marketing and sales.

Leitch advises, “A real point of difference with the Scania range is that we can customise client requirements to suit their transport needs, provided they meet Scania’s technical dependencies on performance, fuel efficiency and driver comfort.”

New Zealand heavy machinery dealer CablePrice has recently announced a $100,000 donation to the Prime Minister’s Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Fund. The donation encompasses a financial contribution from CablePrice key business partner Scania AB, along with a further contribution from CablePrice owners Hitachi Construction Machinery (HCM) and fellow HCM subsidiaries Hitachi Construction Machinery Australia and Hitachi Construction Machinery Asia and Pacific.

CablePrice general manager of sales and marketing Alfons Reitsma says that while images of the firm’s Hitachi excavators and Scania trucks and fire engines have become synonymous with scenes from the rescue and recovery effort, the company is committed to supporting the rebuild of the Garden City.

“The earthquake affected everybody throughout the country, but it also pulled us much closer together to support those who

have been directly affected by this event.“Since the earthquake, we have focused on supporting our

40 Christchurch staff and their families, together with our customers in Canterbury, who have been affected by the quake and involved in the rescue and recovery efforts,” Reitsma says.

While the company’s office in Hornby wasn’t badly affected by the February earthquake, a number of staff members’ homes were severely damaged. Reitsma says that customers involved in the rescue and recovery efforts had also relied on the company’s support service to ensure excavators and trucks remained operational throughout the time-critical rescue and recovery phases.

“Christchurch is now moving into the rebuilding phase, and we stand alongside the city and its people as they work to re-establish their services, infrastructure, buildings and their way of life,” Reitsma adds.

CablePrice has announced a change to the distribution of Hitachi articulated dump trucks in New Zealand. Branding of the trucks has changed from Hitachi to Bell, the original equipment manufacturer.

This change to Bell significantly improves machine and parts availability thanks to direct access to manufacturers stock. Customers will also receive enhanced support and reduced lead times, matching machine availability with market demand.

Andrew Crane, national equipment sales manager, says, “The change from Hitachi to Bell trucks provides significant improvements in supply chain efficiency, and aligns our sales of articulated dump trucks with the global distribution of the Bell brand”.

CablePrice has had an excellent start with this announcement, achieving recent success with the deliveries of three Bell B50Ds to the Solid Energy New Vale Mine in Southland, and a further

unit to the Birchfield Coal Mine on the West Coast to add to the existing fleet of three Hitachi brand trucks.

“We’re really impressed. They’re carrying 25 percent more than our other trucks yet only using one-litre per hour more fuel. As for working in the wet, again, they’re much better than the other trucks, and are more stable thanks to the wider track,” says Solid Energy’s New Vale Mine manager, Antony Stodart.

“We are confident that most customers are aware that Hitachi and Bell articulated dump trucks are essentially the same product, with the only difference being the decals and colour. Features, capabilities and specifications are identical between the brands,” he continues.

With the growing population of trucks, CablePrice’s national parts and service network for both Hitachi and Bell articulated dump trucks has been strengthened for the current numbers, with more units on the way.

Thanks to the support of CablePrice and John Deere Forestry Equipment, Waiariki Institute of Technology in Rotorua took delivery of the very first John Deere E-series operator training simulator in the southern hemisphere, at the beginning of September.

To help reduce traditional training costs and prevent unskilled operators from using equipment in the field, John Deere Forestry has produced this state-of-the-art simulator for E-series machines, complete with new technology that enhances the virtual environment.

John Deere’s operator training simulator is a cost-effective, safe and efficient way for students to learn how to correctly operate a highly-sophisticated forwarder in a controlled environment, before they ever step foot towards a real machine. Highly detailed and realistic lessons teach proper operator technique, machine controls and safe operation in a virtual job site.

“We saw this as the perfect opportunity to support the future of the forestry industry in New Zealand, giving the next generation the opportunity to learn how to get the most from the state-of-the-art equipment that they will soon be operating in the field,” says Andrew Crane, CablePrice equipment product manager.

Waiariki Institute of Technology showcased the simulator to media and invited guests at the opening of the school’s new building and gasification plant, before moving the simulator to

the CablePrice stand at this year’s Forest Industry Expo in Rotorua.

“We see this as very significant for Waiariki Institute. We’ll be incorporating the use of this simulator into two of our courses: the first, a high-level diploma in forest management; and the second, our practical logging course that has over 200 students per year. Primarily, it is a chainsaw based course, but we also want to provide students with hands-on experience of operating a forwarder,” says Jeremy Christmas, director of Waiariki School of Forestry and Primary Industries.

Staffan Kollander recently arrived in New Zealand, on loan from Scania CV AB, Sweden. In what is a first for CablePrice, Kollander will be working at CablePrice head office in Wellington, as part of Scania’s PEP (personnel enhancement programme).

PEP is a program set up by Scania in Sweden, making it possible for employees within the Scania organisation to go on short-term assignments in other markets or countries around the world, gaining experience and assisting Scania in developing products and services for a global market.

Kollander is on an exchange basis for a period of 6 to 12 months. For this program to be fully beneficial to both Scania, Sweden, and CablePrice, New Zealand, CablePrice will also be sending an exchange employee to Sweden. Lauren Calvert, marketing coordinator at head office, has been given the opportunity to be the first employee from CablePrice to move to Sweden as part of this program. Calvert will live and work in Södertälje, a municipality of Stockholm and the home of Scania’s head office. On a six month exchange commencing in January 2012, she will be working in the sales and marketing department at Scania.

While at CablePrice, Kollander will be the marketing

coordinator responsible for Scania trucks in New Zealand. His prime responsibility will be to analyse and support upcoming market changes in the New Zealand truck market, and assist in various other head office marketing activities.

Kollander comes to CablePrice with a Masters of Science degree in Business Administration, and has been working for Scania for almost five years. Among some of his former responsibilities, he has worked with sales from Scania head office towards the European region. Before that, he worked in the pre-sales department with sales systems and commercial questions.

“I come from Stockholm in Sweden and really enjoy travelling, so it’s really a plus going overseas for work. It is wonderful to come here during the New Zealand spring time. I also enjoy sports. Golf is one of my big interests, and I’ve got myself a set of clubs so I will definitely try some of the courses while here. I will also try to see as much of New Zealand as possible. I think that this will be a fantastic experience for me,” says Kollander.

“This is the first upcoming exchange opportunity arranged between Scania CV AB and CablePrice. I’m sure everyone will join with me in welcoming Kollander to New Zealand and make him feel right at home,” says Alfons Reitsma, general manager of sales and marketing at CablePrice.

In recent years, the export meat business has been booming in this country, with New Zealand farmers developing a reputation for producing good quality beef and lamb. But it takes more than just great farming to deliver great products – transportation also plays a big role.

For Wellington-based KAM Transport Ltd, the meat industry forms the foundations of its operations, as well as its management and ownership team.

Owners Rod and Scot Preston are part of a family that has been in the butchery business for more than a century. The brothers took over the company

in 1989, growing the business from a small local delivery firm that serviced the Wellington City Council abattoir, into one that

now has operations in both islands. The Prestons also form a large part of Taylor Preston Meat

Processors, which is where the majority of KAM Transport’s work comes from.

“The company was running three little trucks around town with the odd run up the line to New Plymouth, but, basically, all the action was down here,” says transport manager Chris Mooney.

“In 1989, when Rod and Scot Preston took over, we started to

TRACK & WHEEL

14 CablePrice

Page 15: Track and Wheel-Web

get into the export side of things alongside Taylor Preston. We then started to do their container work, and we’ve grown since then, now doing their export coolstore work and by-products cartage. We’ve stuck around the meat trade – that’s what we know best – but we’ve also got into general freight and all sorts of stuff. We will basically cart everything and anything right now. You have to be into a bit of everything, so we do container handling, swinglift, refrigerated and some bulk units in the South

Island,” Mooney continues. He adds, “Although we’ve predominantly been in the bottom

half of the North Island, at the start of this year, we began to venture into the South Island with some bulk trucks and tipper units.” Indeed, an alliance with Canterbury Meat Packers (CMP) has allowed the company to take on the extra work, running beef hides up from the South Island and beef by-products on the return leg. Mooney says, “They’re pretty big in the South Island and we had the opportunity to get involved with them, so we now have six trucks running around down there – Blenheim, Greymouth and Ashburton.”

The increased transport business has seen the overall fleet grow to 16 trucks, 14 of which are Scanias. Despite the size of the fleet, it’s actually a fairly modern line-up, with the oldest of the trucks being a 2003 R124 420h – originally a tipper, it is now a refrigerated unit. The most recent additions are three new R500 units powered by Scania’s DC16 Euro IV V8 engine. In 8x4 bulk tipper configuration, the trio is perfect for coping with the expanded KAM Transport business.

Mooney says the line-up of Scanias has a range of benefits, many of those due to the operating costs of the powerful 15.6-litre engine: “They’re a very reliable, efficient and professional vehicle. The running costs we’ve got from them have always been good and they’ve given us very few problems,” he says. “We’re really pretty happy with what we’ve got.”

But it’s not just return on investment that makes Scania such a good choice for KAM Transport, as they also keep the drivers happy, something that gives the business a consistent base of employees.

Renowned for their driver comfort, Scania has set a benchmark with an air-suspended cab, comfortable driving position and the aesthetically-designed cabin layout, all of which plays a major part in ensuring drivers are working in a comfortable environment. Other features, such as the electronic braking system, ABS anti-lock braking and cab construction based around driver protection, also mean that safety is a big part of Scania’s design.

“Good gear does keep the drivers around. If they’re driving rubbish, then someone can offer them a job driving something else and off they go…there’s no allegiance,” Mooney says. “If you can supply them with a good, comfortable truck, that’s even better – you can hold onto your drivers a bit better.”

KAM Transport has thrived on developing long-term relationships with its clients, something that has paid off as the company has developed. It’s a company that has also benefited from its relationship with Scania, and CablePrice is extraordinarily proud of being associated with it.

THE NEW ZAXIS 5 SERIES EXCAVATORS HAVE ARRIVED

5NEW ZX

SERIES

Many will remember the Hitachi EX-5 as being “the complete” machine for reliability and performance of its era. Initial response to the first machine in New Zealand is that the ZAXIS-5 range will once again put Hitachi Excavators at the peak.

Loaded with numerous, customer-driven enhancements, all models deliver superior productivity and durability, while keeping operating costs low. With more dig force, slew torque and lift capacity, ZX-5 excavators get more work done in a day, so you can stay on schedule. Their powerful and proven Isuzu 6BG1T and 6HK1X diesel engines go reliably about their business wherever you put these machines to work.

The larger operator environment features a more comfortable air suspension, heated high-back seat and a new operator friendly multifunction monitor.

Other standard features, such as rear-view camera, ROPS cabs (ISO 12117) and FOPS (Level II) roof and front window guards, further enhance the machine applications and operator safety.

18 CablePrice

Page 19: Track and Wheel-Web

The first ZX200-5 arrived in New Zealand in September and since then Taylors Contracting in Nelson have been testing the machine, clocking up 300 hours with Chris Donavan, a skilful operator who appreciates a good machine. Having operated a wide range of excavators in his career, Chris had an open minded view when he was given the new ZX200-5.

When asked for his opinions of the machine’s performance, Chris comments.

“I found it’s very powerful in the slew and has excellent multi-function ability and track drive. The productivity of the new model is also better when loading trucks, I am consistently a minute faster than other same sized machines on the job. Also, for the amount of extra work the machine does, fuel consumption is very good, and I only have to fuel up every three days”.

When asked for his opinions of the new cabin

“It’s got great leg room and a comfortable seat, I like the monitor with its larger screen and controls all within one close area, making it extremely easy to change settings without taking my eyes off the job. I like to do my jobs in the shortest amount of time possible and it really allows me to do just that thanks to its very smooth and responsive controls”.

Hitachi has also improved durability for the new Dash-5 series with several improvements made to the undercarriage and front attachment.

The new Zaxis Dash 5 is available in five models between 20 and 35 tonne from early 2012, and will able to be seen at a CablePrice branch near you.

Using a bulldozer to push waste arriving at a landfill was turning the ground to mud. But buying a John Deere wheeled loader to do the work has quickly solved the problem.

Thanks to its rugged versatility, a John Deere K-series wheeled loader has permanently supplanted a bulldozer in a waste-moving task

at a major landfill, as well as being able to perform other roles on the site.

The Silverstream landfill in the Hutt Valley has been operating since 1972, serving a population of more than 125,000. Eighteen months ago, with the original area filled and capped, a purpose-built phase two of the landfill was opened.

This phase has a lifespan of 50 years and its class-A rating enables it to take the widest range of waste material, holding up to 105,000 tonnes annually. Transpacific Industries Group (TPI) (a leading provider of comprehensive waste and environmental services) contracts to the Hutt City Council to operate and manage the site, alongside the original landfill team that has managed the site for approximately 11 years, gaining an in-depth knowledge of the operational requirements.

Four months ago, the company purchased a 20-tonne John Deere 724K wheeled loader to add to its machinery fleet, currently consisting of a 35-tonne refuse compactor, a 20-tonne D6 bulldozer, an 11-tonne front-end loader, a 30-tonne excavator and two dump trucks.

Landfill manager James Blair says the primary reason for the purchase of the 724K was for use on the truck’s manoeuvring and tipping pad instead of the bulldozer, as the latter was breaking up the pad in winter and turning the surface to mud.

All trucks arriving with waste at the landfill must deposit their loads on the pad. The waste is then pushed off the pad to the compactor, a task

now permanently transferred from the bulldozer to the 724K wheeled loader.

“With its foam-filled rubber tyres, the John Deere is sealing up the truck manoeuvring pad so it doesn’t get muddy, and being a 20-tonne loader, it can push refuse quite readily,” Blair says. “We also use it for small jobs like ‘blading out’ of earth on the pad, because we’re always progressing forward with the earth.”

He says that, in addition, the loader will be employed to stockpile gravel and move it into position for placing on top of the landfill’s plastic liner and fabric overlay to further protect the liner.

Blair continues that when TPI realised it would have to buy a wheeled loader to use on the pad, it surveyed what could be obtained locally. The John Deere not only came up to spec with all other comparable loaders but “it was there – it was readily available. And CablePrice’s service and parts are locally sourced – you don’t have to look outside of New Zealand”.

The Silverstream landfill’s long, planned life is matched by that of the John Deere 724K. Its turbocharged 9-litre, 197kw, wet sleeve diesel engine delivers an impressive 1169Nm of torque, and its all-round rugged reliability, durability and

heavy-duty mainframe equip it to thrive on waste-handling and tough transfer station tasks.

An innovative Quad-Cool™ (cooling on demand) system with proportional (reversible) fan ensures that everything stays cool in dusty conditions. Extensive guarding minimises debris build-up and helps to avoid close encounters with obstacles from slowing down the machine. A solid-state electrical distribution centre, durable sealed-switch module and state-of-the-art diagnostic malfunction monitor further boost uptime and productivity.

Other features include inboard, planetary, wet-disc brakes that help to ensure longer service life.

While Blair has yet to fully assess the 724K’s operating costs, he says the wheeled loader has been performing well, fulfilling TPI’s expectations. It has an ideal weight-to-power ratio and his operators have praised its accessibility, simplicity, cab comfort and ease of handling.

“We’ve been through snow and a wet six weeks and we’ve found that having the loader has been an asset. It was a good choice – we made a good decision,” Blair says.

Have you ever thought of joining the growing number of people doing online shopping?

It appears that more and more of us are doing our weekly shop online, and why not?! You get your own personal shopper, exactly what you order and not just your pre-packed

goods (bread, tinned foods and cleaning products) – it caters for all your shopping needs, including fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and frozen goods – all delivered to your door at a time that suits you.

Such is the professionalism of the service offered by Countdown that couriers are not considered to be good enough to deliver your order: Countdown has a contracted fleet of specialised, refrigerated carriers to deliver your online orders.

Like any time-critical business, reliability is key. Without reliability, everything else becomes secondary. Delivering online orders for Countdown is a time-critical business, one that Wellington-based Key Carriers has been contracted for, delivering to customers in Khandallah, Wellington CBD and southern regions for over five years.

Key Carriers’ managing director Ki Teariki and his team are responsible for ensuring that online shopping orders (in their region) are delivered in pristine condition, on time, every time. What started less than six years ago with a used HiAce van, has now grown into the business we see today, employing 10 staff (six full-time and four part-time), and, with the two new Isuzu NLR250s, a full fleet of five.

With an ageing fleet, maintenance costs on the increase and a need to fit new, purpose-built bodies, it was time to upgrade. Teariki says: “Initially, I was looking for a couple of used imports, but on closer inspection and after talking with CablePrice, there was actually little to be gained from buying used over new. Also, with new, you get the advantages like full dealer support and a known history of the truck.”

Teariki knew exactly what he needed in a truck: it had to be

fuel efficient, easy to drive and safe. Another important fact was that it had to have a narrow cab/body to fit the new purpose-built bodies. The Isuzu NLR250 that Teariki decided on ticked all the right boxes.

Delivering in Wellington’s CBD, with its narrow alleyways, is always going to be a challenge. But if you think that’s difficult, you want to try some of the steep, tight driveways in the suburbs, like up the top of Mt Victoria, where a good street has room for just two cars, let alone a truck. Its times like these that a truck with the narrow body of the Isuzu NLR is appreciated, not to mention the inclusion of hill start assist.

The NLR250 is powered by a Euro IV, three-litre, four-cylinder, 16-valve, DOHC, turbocharged Isuzu diesel engine. This is capable of producing 110kW with 375Nm of torque. With a GVM of 4500kg, a narrow body and a list of modern safety features – ABS, EBS, driver’s air bag and hill start assist – the Isuzu NLR250 is the ideal delivery truck.

If Teariki and Countdown continue to experience the growth seen over the past five years, Key Carriers will be sure to get its money’s worth from the new Isuzus.

Fuel consumption in heavy, long-haul traffic can be reduced to less than 20 litres per 100 kilometres in daily operation. The Scania transport laboratory reveals how.Words by Per-Ola KnutasImages Kjell Thorsson and Carl-Erik Andersson

THE BIG SQUEEZE

With the right vehicles, an uncompromising focus on driver behaviour and use of the computer-based Scania driver support system, fuel consumption can be reduced to very low levels. This is the assertion of the Scania transport laboratory, and it’s

done the research to prove it.“On our best trips between Sweden and the Netherlands, we

have reached 18.2L/100km, a level that many say is impossible,” says Anders Gustavsson, managing director of the Scania transport laboratory.

The laboratory is a wholly-owned Scania subsidiary that tests and evaluates vehicle properties and performance in commercial road haulage. It also trains and coaches drivers in the use of economical and safe driving techniques.

Today, the company consists of 65 drivers, 20 tractor units and

75 semi-trailers. The fleet includes competitors’ trucks as well, providing relevant comparisons in real-life conditions.

The practical assignment of the transport laboratory is to be responsible for part of Scania’s European production flow by hauling freight and components between the production units in Södertälje in Sweden, and Zwolle in the Netherlands.

“From the start in 2007, we wanted the lab to facilitate communications between Scania’s product development and the daily operations of a haulage company,” says Gustavsson. “The dialogue works very well. Virtually every week, our drivers are visited by employees of Scania’s research and development departments who want to talk about concrete ideas and improvement opportunities.”

One result is that the laboratory now operates tractor units that are configured with a faster rear-axle gear ratio. This leads to lower engine revs at cruising speed, something that can reduce fuel

TRACK & WHEEL

24 CablePrice

Page 25: Track and Wheel-Web

Consistent driver training: repeat and reinforce driver training for real and lasting fuel savings. Find methods and processes for coaching drivers regularly, preferably in real time using the tools in the Scania fleet management portal.

Correct vehicle specification: devote time to determining the correct vehicle specifications for your operations. A faster rear-axle gear ratio leads to lower engine revs at cruising speed, and can lower fuel consumption by 3 to 10 percent. Correct specifications may also mean not having too much of a powerful an engine.

Scania ecocruise: this is an intelligent cruise control system that can save up to 4 percent on fuel.

Scania driver support: this computerised support system guides the driver in real time by providing tips and feedback.

Properly adjusted air deflectors: ask your Scania workshop to help adjust air deflectors properly. An improperly adjusted deflector will increase fuel consumption.

Regular vehicle checks: check the axle and wheel alignment regularly, and adjust tyre pressure.

Regular trailer checks: check axle alignment and brake settings regularly in order to avoid traction losses.

consumption by 3 to 10 percent. Another result is a new rear air deflector,

known as a “boat-tail” spoiler, mounted at the back of the company’s semi-trailers. The spoiler increases the length of the vehicle combination by 30cm, which is equivalent to the extra length permitted by the European Union. The results are very promising.

“The fuel savings are close to four percent,” Gustavsson says. “For our trucks that run 360,000km per year and consume an average of 26 litres of fuel per 100km, this represents an annual saving of nearly 4000 litres of fuel per truck, as well as lower CO2 emissions.”

But the biggest improvements in terms of fuel consumption and vehicle wear and tear are still achieved by means of consistent efforts to train and coach drivers, along with systems such as Scania fleet management and Scania driver support, Gustavsson says.

“These are the most important steps for us to achieve our target of fuel consumption averaging 22 litres per 100km,” he adds.

Located in East Otago, some 80km north of Dunedin and 2km to the east of the Macraes Flat township, the OceanaGold mine site actually consists of two mines – the Macraes Open Cut and Frasers Underground – with a total anticipated production of around 210,000 ounces per annum

When OceanaGold, New Zealand’s largest gold producer, look for earth moving equipment, it needs unbeatable performance from proven suppliers.

Hitachi and CablePrice are such suppliers. Having been a large excavator

supplier to OceanaGold for a number of years, Hitachi has proven it knows how to build safe, solid and reliable mining excavators, and CablePrice knows just how best to support the mining company with its specialised mining support group.

So, when OceanaGold made the decision to purchase another excavator for their Macraes Flat operation, it was no surprise

that it once again looked to Hitachi. This time, it chose the Hitachi EX2500-6 to add to its fleet, which already includes two 359-tonne Hitachi EX3600 excavators, one a 2005 vintage with more than 35,000 hours on the clock and the other a 2010 vintage with 7000 hours.

While the new EX2500-6 may be bit smaller than its two brothers, weighing in at just 250 tonnes, it is by no means a small machine. As a backhoe configuration excavator, it is both powerful and efficient. With a 50-litre, 1400hp Cummins QSK series, 16-cylinder, turbocharged and after-cooled diesel engine, it has more than eight times the power of the average family car.

TRACK & WHEEL

CablePrice 27

Page 28: Track and Wheel-Web

The operator of the EX2500-6 sits on an air-suspended seat in a cab some six metres above the ground. The cab itself is roomy, pressurised with three air-conditioning units to keep dust out and the operator cool in summer and warm in winter. Access to the cab is via hydraulically-operated folding stairs, for both safety and easy access. Additional safety comes from a Sandvik fire suppression system, installed by Fire Suppression Systems.

This excavator is a real workhorse with six hydraulic pumps, a peak oil flow of 2450 litres per minute and a 15-cubic metre bucket, all of which means it is capable of collecting 27 tonnes of earth in each pass. Working around the clock, the average pass only takes 25 seconds, so this is an excavator that can load over 2500 tonnes per hour, or 60,000 per day.

Having been fully assembled and tested at Hitachi’s mining factory in Japan, the EX2500-6 was dismantled

into transportable sized components and shipped to New Zealand, arriving at Wellington’s Centre Port on October 1. From there, with the assistance of Orbit Heavy Haulage, 11 transporters were used to move the components to the assembly site at Macraes Mine.

Since arriving at Macraes Flat, the 250-tonne mining excavator spent two weeks being assembled and tested by the CablePrice mining support group that consists of 10 technicians and is led by Invercargill branch service manager Roger Hunt.

The machine was then handed over to OceanaGold to be officially commissioned on October 18.

“While we had a few delays early on, partly due to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, everything came together just right, and the team did an excellent job reassembling the machine in two weeks. Given the size, shape and weight of the parts that the team were assembling, we couldn’t have done this without the assistance of A V Martin and Co crane hire for the heavy lifts,” says Paul Laird, CablePrice mining product manager.

One of the many new words to pepper conversation in Christchurch over the past year has been “deconstruction”, effectively meaning carefully controlled demolition. At the vanguard of that activity in the Garden City is Auckland-based Nikau Contractors Ltd, a firm of deconstruction engineering specialists.

THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB

TRACK & WHEEL

Page 31: Track and Wheel-Web

TRACK & WHEEL

CablePrice 31

Page 32: Track and Wheel-Web

The company initially came to Christchurch to answer a call for demolition equipment, as John Paul Stil, senior estimator for the company, explains: “We were in Wellington at the time and one of our operations managers got a call from someone in USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) asking us to

bring some gear down. We just bought down a couple of 40-tonne diggers to begin with. But then we bought a lot of other machines down, and the rest is history …”

However, none of it was big enough for some of the challenges the earthquakes presented.

A few months ago, the company bought a new 63-tonne Hitachi ZX470LCH-3 excavator, a specialist demolition machine with a three-piece boom and crusher capable of reaching 26 metres, used primarily on buildings of five to six storeys. It’s one of only a few in the country, and Nikau has been operating it in Christchurch since its arrival in mid-2011.

The Zaxis-3 LCH-series excavators are well suited to this kind of work, with features such as a large undercarriage and strengthened boom cylinders. However, strength does not compromise efficiency in these machines: clean-burning common rail diesel engines and an exhaust gas recirculation system are just two of a number of their cost-saving and environment-respecting assets.

Advanced Hitachi hydraulic technologies also abound in these excavators. Two examples include the enhanced boom recirculation systems and a new regenerative oil circuit, both of which effectively store hydraulic energy when the load on the crusher or bucket is light.

Nikau Contractors Ltd was formed in 1980, having grown out of a husband-and-wife lawn mowing company that was

asked to shift an old garden shed. Two sons and two daughters of founders Diane and John Paul Stil manage the company’s operations in the field today, and it is now one of New Zealand’s leaders in deconstruction, recycling and salvage techniques, with clients ranging from government agencies, regional councils and iwi, to property developers and general contractors with demolition, site works and environmental projects on hand.

You’d have to say that Nikau Contractors was always a prime

TRACK & WHEEL

32 CablePrice

Page 33: Track and Wheel-Web

candidate to help beleaguered Christchurch, thanks to its extensive experience in the safe and efficient removal of multi-storey buildings, bridges, underwater structures, service stations and underground storage tanks.

And it has plenty of gear. In fact, it has New Zealand’s largest range of high-reach excavators, heavy-duty rock breakers and multi-task attachments. Its extensive plant inventory includes 35 excavators all up, 21 of them carrying the Hitachi nameplate, 14

of those from the Zaxis range.Mostly at work in Christchurch, these machines are fitted with

a wide range of rock breakers, rippers, pulverisers and shears, with two of those shear attachments being capable of delivering 1400 tonnes of cutting force.

But Stil is quite matter-of-fact about the high proportion of Hitachis in their excavator fleet: “They’re good and reliable machines. They’re really great value…and the back-up service

TRACK & WHEEL

CablePrice 33

Page 34: Track and Wheel-Web

and support from CablePrice is really good, too.”The company also specialises in environmentally sensitive

projects, having a subsidiary, Nikau Environmental Ltd, to deal with sampling, testing, removal, clean-up and remediation of asbestos and other hazardous materials. These specialist skills have proved invaluable in Christchurch, where the company has been called upon to salvage materials and items of historical importance at several sites.

Nikau places a very high degree of importance on safety, going to the extent of employing two members of staff as “safety

champions”, patrolling its numerous work sites that are manned by 50 staff, nearly half of them recruited locally.

So, with its host of safety and environmental features, the ZX470LCH suits the ethos of Nikau down to the ground.

There’s plenty of work in Christchurch for the Nikau team and the many other companies helping the city with the clean-up. The numbers being reported change every day, but one recent count had 650 buildings in the CBD demolished. By the time the job’s done, it’s expected some 1500 buildings will have been fully or partly demolished -- sorry, deconstructed.

Innovative Bell MkVI ADT upgrade showcases the latest in safety and innovation

CablePrice is the national distributor of Bell Articulated Dump Trucks (ADTs) in New Zealand. Since early 2010, customers have benefited from the many industry-leading features and benefits of the Bell D-Series MkVI ADTs, which provide significant advantages in

terms of ADT innovation and technology. The MkVI upgrade focuses largely on enhancements to the

electronics and the operator station in order to further improve safety, ease of operation, noise level reduction and vehicle protection.

State-of-the-art operating environmentThe most recognisable change to the Bell MkVI ADT is located

in the cab where the gear selection and bin-tip lever are now incorporated into a fully-sealed switch module. This arrangement not only reduces wear and tear, it also optimises the cab’s ergonomics by placing important controls within easy reach of the operator, thus creating an efficient operating environment.

The Bell MkVI ADT includes a keyless start which is protected by a numerical code that must be entered by the operator prior to starting the truck. Different options can be set to allow for easy on-site management and automatic expiry of codes, something that provides site management with greater control of who can operate a specific vehicle and when.

The keyless engine stop includes a standard turbo spin-down feature to regulate spin downtime according to how hard the engine has been working.

Safety features are becoming increasingly important, and the Bell MkVI ADT incorporates industry-leading improvements. For example, the park brake application is automatic when selecting neutral, and neutral cannot be selected above a speed of 5kph.

A pitch and roll measurement device has been fitted to the rear chassis to enable additional technology to be integrated into the machine’s software. This allows for the inclusion of numerous innovations, such as the hill assist feature. The inclinometer measures the angle of the vehicle and cross-references this with the exclusive on-board weighing feature. This results in the park brake only being released once a pre-programmed engine torque has been reached in order to ensure a controlled pull away with no rollback, even on the steepest of inclines.

Similarly, the machine angle and payload are cross-referenced on pull away, so if the vehicle is unladen and on relatively flat terrain it will automatically pull away in second gear. Apart from guaranteeing a smooth pull away and shifting, this feature also saves fuel by removing the unnecessary shift from first to

BELL REPUTATION RINGING TRUE

TRACK & WHEEL

CablePrice 37

Page 38: Track and Wheel-Web

second gear. The roll detector can also be used on-site to set limits for

when the bin-tip function can be activated. If the vehicle is positioned at an angle where lifting the bin may cause instability, the software will prevent the bin from tipping and the operator will be warned of the potentially dangerous action on the display monitor.

Along with the standard OEM features of the MkVI upgrade, CablePrice has further enhanced safety by including, as standard, a number of safety-related options: an in-cab emergency stop; lockout kits; hi-visibility mirrors; additional work lights; and deluxe seating.

Operator comfort reaches a new high in the Bell MkVI ADTs. In addition to the improved ergonomics and inclusion of deluxe seating, CD player and sunvisor, comfort is further enhanced by a significant reduction in noise levels. This is achieved through

focused changes that include a new headliner, hydraulic damper and additional strategically placed insulation in the cab.

Fleetm@tic – the next generationCoupled to the electronic innovations are enhancements to

Bell Equipment’s global fleet tracking system, Fleetm@tic. The second generation Fleetm@tic system provides customers with significantly improved reporting, to the extent that reports on individual shifts and operators are possible. The standard functions of geofencing, fault warnings and service notifications have also been retained.

Features included in the Mark VI upgrade, coupled with the existing advantages of low fuel burn, low daily operating costs and high productivity, reaffirm Bell as the safest and most innovative ADT on the market.

Hitachi is one of the world’s market leaders in large hydraulic excavators. Combining engineering excellence with a dedication to quality, Hitachi makes tough, long-lasting machines that meet the challenges of mining.

Hitachi’s large excavators range in size from 80 to 800 tonnes. With the ability to keep running for 24 hours straight,

these machines have exceptional durability. Their endurance is further proven by the ultra-large excavators, which have working-time records of over 90,000 hours. This kind of performance is not surprising when you consider that Hitachi’s corporate policy is to never release equipment that is not ready for the field.

In mining, cost-efficiency is all important. Hitachi’s excavators provide one of the lowest cost-per-tonne options for moving materials in their class. Low maintenance and long lifespans make for machines that give you significant savings!

MINING EXCAVATORS

Hitachi’s mobile crushers are machines that pulverise concrete debris with their shark-like jaws. Mobile, compact, and

environmentally-friendly, these machines do their part to recycle

precious materials. There are three models of Hitachi mobile crushers available to suit your recycling needs, each coming equipped with a powerful jaw crusher.

The gravel, sand and metal that is crushed from concrete and other debris is sorted first. The metal is then recycled, and the remaining elements are used as construction material for roads or other structures. This type of environment conscious recycling makes sure that resource waste is eliminated.

Hitachi’s rubber crawler carriers are powerful vehicles that are ideal for muddy, uneven construction sites. Even with heavy loads, these carriers can run smoothly on soft-ground conditions.

Stamping their authority all over the globe in poor underfoot conditions, the Bell D-series articulated dump trucks are setting a new standard in earthmoving!

The trucks boast incredibly fuel-efficient engines that deliver outstanding productivity for their owners and the reliability that Bell is renowned for.

With the B50D, Bell became the first manufacturer in the world to develop a 50-tonne arctic. From 25 to 50-tonne, Bell has the ADT to suit your specific job requirements.

ARTICULATED DUMP TRUCKS

RUBBER CRAWLER CARRIERS

In purchasing Euclid (a rigid dump truck brand synonymous with the mining industry), Hitachi was able to expand its line-up of mining products

with a world-leading range that perfectly complements its hydraulic excavators.

Hitachi AC drive technology, developed in conjunction with Siemens, provides truck performance with a higher top speed, better gradability and stronger retardation. These features increase the trucks’ productivity and uptime, while reducing operating and maintenance costs, all of which equates to a lower cost per tonne of material moved. Engineered for performance, designed for comfort and built to last, Hitachi rigid dump trucks make even the toughest jobs look small.

The new D-series swing machines combine plenty of new features to give you productivity like never before. Swing torque, tractive effort, horsepower, hydraulic flow and the seamless integration of the attachment and carrier are all worth bragging about.

The 2954D boasts 12 more inches of additional reach and a larger arm cylinder that promises additional lifting power, while the 3754D packs a punch with its 296 horsepower.

It’s these powerful features that make each machine as responsive as the company that made them.

In the forest, things rarely come easy. That’s why John Deere offers the amazingly easy to operate Autoshift (available on H-series models), and the industry’s widest selection of skidder models and options.

No matter your size and power needs, we have a fuel-efficient skidder that will help you work harder while still leaving something in your own tank when the day is done. You can even narrow it down to a skidder that’s virtually custom-fit to your operation – one that is hard to match for operating ease and comfort, for reliability, and for the greatest productivity in your prevailing conditions.
