GC and GC/MS
GC and GC/MSThermo Scientific TRACE™ GC Columns offer high
temperature stability and exhibit low bleed and long
lifetimes. From general purpose non-polar to polar
columns, many of which are MS-compatible, TRACE
GC columns provide excellent quality and performance,
• Reliable and reproducible performance• Complete range of GC consumables
for all instruments
The heart of any gas chromatograph is thecolumn. We have used the knowledgegained over 30 years of HPLC column production and 50 years in GC and GC/MSinstrument manufacturing to offer a range of columns and consumables that are unsurpassed in the most important aspects of their performance.
Low BleedBleeding phases cause problems includinglow sensitivity, detector contamination, lowertemperature limits and short lifetimes. Allmanufacturers have at some time claimedtheir columns have the lowest bleed, but usesupporting chromatograms that lack repro-ducible scale information or methodology. Byquantifying the amount of phase bleeding fromthe column, we can show that the ThermoScientific TRACE™ column range has lessthan half the bleed of other popular columns.
RobustnessMoisture and oxygen pose a danger to GCcolumns. Oxygen contamination can comefrom many sources, leading to shortenedlifetimes, increased bleed and increased cost.TRACE GC columns have been manufacturedwith improved phase bonding to minimizethe risk of damage due to contaminated carrier gas or difficult samples as shown in the two figures above.
ReproducibilityAs well as focusing on individual columnperformance, we work to improve column-to-column reproducibility, arising from majorimprovements in the production processes. A column bought today will have the samecharacteristics or better as one obtained ayear or ten years from now.
Guaranteed PerformanceAll TRACE columns have passed rigoroustesting procedures to ensure the highest possible performance and are delivered with aserialized certificate to show their performanceand assist with traceability. All ThermoScientific columns come with a 100% guar-antee. If for any reason the column does notperform up to our claims, we will replace itwith one that does.

TRACE TR-5 and TR-5HT GC ColumnsThe most widely used phase in gas chromatography
• High operating temperature• Ideal start for method development• Wide variety of applications
The TRACE™ TR-5 column is a 5% phenyl column with a slight increase in polaritycompared to the 100% methyl columns, TR-1and TR-1MS. The TRACE TR-5 is a universalcolumn with a wide application range, anextremely low bleed and maximum operatingtemperature of 350 °C. It is an ideal startingcolumn for method development and is capableof performing most required separations.
The TRACE TR-5HT columns extend theupper temperature limits as high as 400 °Callowing the elution of higher boilingHydrocarbons up to C100.
ApplicationsThe TRACE TR-5 and TR-5HT are suitable forapplications such as alcohols, free fatty acids, aromatics, flavors and low polarity pesticides. The universal use of the TR-5 column is illustrated by the separation of substitutedaromatics. The chromatogram shows excellentpeak shape of all components and separa-tion is based on boiling points.
TRACE TR-5MS GC ColumnsThe most popular MS phase in gas chromatography
• Silphenylene phase• Lowest bleed, highest stability• High signal-to-noise increases sensitivity• High robustness to oxygen and water contamination
The Thermo Scientific TRACE™ TR-5MS columnis a silphenylene-based phase ideal for mostGC/MS applications. This low bleed columnis especially important for mass spectrometrybecause contamination of source componentswill quickly lead to poor results and costlyinstrument downtime. The TR-5MS column isslightly more polar compared to the TR-1columns, and operates up to a maximumtemperature of 370 °C.
The TR-5MS column is a universal columnwith a wide range of applications from envi-ronmental semi-volatile methods to food andfragrance applications. The column is veryinert (no active sites) thus reducing breakdownof labile compounds such as DDT and Endrin. The inertness of the column also results inminimal peak tailing. This, together with high efficiency, results in narrow peaks andexcellent separation based on boiling points. If the GC/MS is exposed to many variedmethods, then this is the preferred columnfor the instrument.
To demonstrate the robustness of the TR-5MS column, a new column was subjectedto 80 hours at 200 °C using air as a carrier gas.A comparison of its performance before andafter shows little change below its maximumoperating temperature (see page 48).
ApplicationsThe TRACE TR-5MS is ideal for all GC/MSapplications, particularly if the column isrequired for many different methods.
The Thermo Scientific TRACE™ TR-35MS is asilphenylene-based phase ideal for GC/MSapplications, particularly applications requiringa high temperature phase and more polaritythan a 5% phenyl column. The TR-35MSphase has extremely low bleed, especiallyimportant in limiting contamination of sourcecomponents that can degrade results andcause costly instrument downtime. This alsoleads to a high signal-to-noise ratio, improvingyour sensitivity. The inertness of the columnphase and its high efficiency results in minimalpeak tailing, narrow peaks and excellentseparation. The TR-35MS column operatesup to a maximum temperature of 370 °C.
ApplicationsThe TR-35MS column is a universal, mid-polarity column used in a wide range ofapplications from environmental semi-volatilemethods to food and fragrance applications.

Columns For Drugs of AbuseWe offer two columns specifically designed forthe analysis of common drugs of abuse. TheThermo Scientific TR-DoA5 column is widelyused for the analysis and determination of a range of toxicological target compoundsincluding amphetamines, codeine and mor-phine. The higher polarity of the TR-DoA35column makes it ideal for the determinationof Carboxy-THC and is the recommended column for use in drug testing labs for theconfirmation of THC.
Columns for Dioxin and PCB AnalysisTo meet the requirements for High ResolutionGC/MS methods for the analysis of polychlo-rinated di-benzo-ρ-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorodi-benzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinatedbi-phenyls (PCBs), we have designed a rangeof dedicated TRACE columns. These TRACEcolumns ensure optimum performance for HRGC/MS with exceptional stability and verylow bleed. The TRACE columns developed fordioxin and PCB are low polarity and providewide coverage of the 17 congeners with highest toxicological significance (2,3,7,8 – chlorine substituted congeners).
