    Staff Spotlight!! Meet Karen!

    Karen has been with the department since May

    1998! Here are some fun facts about her!! 

    I grew up in Silver Spring, MD, right outside ofWashington, D.C., but have called

     North Carolina home since 1978.

    I love to get outdoors, and am passionate aboutgardening, music, and traveling with my husband Bobby. 

    Three boys - ages 10, 7 and 5 - call me “Grandma”!

    School’s Out Club for Youth 

     For youth, ages 6 -12, with disabilities

    School’s out so let’s play! During this school dayout, children will play games, make crafts, take a

    field trip and engage in physical activities! All of

    these activities are used to promote peer

    interaction and appropriate social skills, physical

    activity, and independence. Children must bring

    their lunch with them.

    **NEW PROGRAM**Wilderness Skills 

     For children, teens and adults, ages 6 and up,

    with disabilities 

     Picnic Shelter behind Marion Diehl Recreation

    Center

     New Wilderness Skills program!  Learn new

    skills that involve the outdoors.  We'll learn

    outdoor cooking, shelter building, edible plants,

    outdoor safety and so much more!  This is a fun,

     beginner level program to teach the basics that

    you would need for camping, or being out-

    doors.  There will be 3 different age groups:

    Youth-ages 6-12, Teens-ages 13-18, Adults-ages

    18 and up.  Each age group will have one session:

    Youth-May 2, Teens-May 9, and Adults-May

    16. 

    Registration Deadline: Youth-Wednesday,

    April 27, Teens-Wednesday May 4, and Adults

    -Wednesday May 11. 

    Adapted Kayaking 

     For teens and adults, ages 13 and up, with physical

    disabilities 

     Latta Plantation Accessible Kayak launch

    This program is for individuals with physical disabilitieswho are interested in learning about kayaking.  Kayak

    instruction will take place on land and in the water.  All

    gear and kayaks will be provided.

    Wilderness Bunch 

     For teens and young adults, ages 16 to 35, with

    disabilities 

     Drop off/Pick up at Marion Diehl Recreation Center

     May 20th- May 22nd (Friday

     Drop off: 3:30 pm-4:00 pm

     Pick up: 3:00 pm-3:30 pm

    Enjoy a 2 night tent camping trip at McDowell Nature

    Preserve.  We will camp out under the stars and learn mor

    about the great outdoors.  We will teach tent camping

     basics, and enjoy different hikes and outdoor activities.  W

    will also go kayaking during this trip. Drop off and pick u

    will be at Marion Diehl Recreation Center.  Participants

    must be independent in all self -care, and must be able to

    self -navigate unsteady terrain and keep up with the

    group.  Previous camping experience not required!  All

    meals and equipment will be provided.
