Town Receives Grant for Connector Trail
The Town of Kitty Hawk has been awarded a $69,408 grant from the
North
Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources to connect
a 1.8 mile
trail located in the Kitty Hawk Woods Preserve to Dare County’s
Kitty Hawk
Park. In addition, the Dare County Tourism Board has committed
funding in
the amount of $47,592 in Short Term Restricted Grant Funding to
make this
project possible. The trail connection will consist of
approximately 500 linear
feet of elevated boardwalk that will traverse low lying areas
and provide
additional outdoor recreational opportunities for residents and
visitors of the
Kitty Hawk Woods Preserve. Dare County’s Kitty Hawk Park will
become a
trail head and existing parking and restroom facilities will be
incorporated
into the project.
The Town’s Recreation Committee, Town Council, and Coastal
Reserve
Local Advisory Committee have all worked extremely hard over the
past 2
years to obtain funding for this project. The Town received
support from the
Dare County Board of Commissioners, The Outer Banks Hospital,
Dare
County Schools, and multiple other organizations and residents
for this
project. The trail is expected to be completed by June of this
year.
Town Manager Andy Stewart said, “This has really received a lot
of support from everyone in Dare County and we are elated that
Kitty Hawk was awarded funding for this project. The grant process
is highly competitive
throughout the State of North Carolina. It has truly been a team
effort and we are excited about the additional recreational
opportunities it will create. The project comes at a time when more
people are seeking to find outdoor activities and enjoy what mother
nature has to offer.”
