“THERE is something veryspecial in Barnsley’s town cen-tre that shouts out, attractingmore people and new business-es.”
These are the words of AnneUntisz, town centre servicesmanager for Barnsley Council, who is part of a 41-strong teamdedicated to improvingBarnsley’s centre.
Over the past few years Annesays there have been bigchanges in the centre with anumber of new shops plantingtheir routes in the town.
Despite the recession,Barnsley’s traders and retail-ers have remained positive andshoots of recovery are startingto show according to Anne.
“Barnsley’s town centre didnot suffer as much as othersduring the recession, somemay have scaled back a bit, butwe did not lose huge numbers,”says Anne.
“People have generallyremained positive and recoveryis starting to show with a lotof interest in the town fromnew businesses.
“A range of new shops haverecently arrived with a numberof independent traders movinginto small units and largerstores moving into theprecinct.
“I have shown a lot of peoplearound units recently who arewanting to set up new inde-pendent businesses here whichis great news for the centre.
“In addition, we have fournew traders moving into theindoor market including a jew-eller and a tattooist.”
The market is one of themain attractions in Barnsley’scentre.
It operates six days a week indifferent forms, from a fullmarket to second-hand goodsand a car boot.
Anne says the wide variety ofmarket stalls is what’s attract-ing shoppers from as far asYork.
“Coach operators continue to
bring shoppers into Barnsleyfrom outside the boroughevery week, recently we hadnine in just one week, includ-ing shoppers from York.
“From talking to these peopleit’s come to light that the mar-ket is a big pull as it offerssuch a wide range of goods andattracts shoppers of all ages, creating a fantastic atmos-phere.
“The continental market nowalso comes to Barnsley severaltimes a year, offering shopperssomething that bit different. It’s proved extremely popularand the streets are alwaysbustling when it arrives.”
But in order to keep attract-ing these new shoppers andbusinesses it’s important thatthe town looks good.
Anne explains BarnsleyCouncil’s town centre team ispassionate about helping toimprove the shopping areasand is already making animpact.
“By working with tradersand retailers we are able toaddress any problems andwork on areas they feel needprioritising,” says Anne.
“The centre has already beentidied up a lot creating a safeand clean environment for peo-ple to shop in.
“If the town looks attractiveit should bring in more people, but it’s also important for ourloyal shoppers to keep support-ing the town centre too.
“It’s a very positive time forBarnsley’s town centre, peopleare wanting to look forwardand this is creating a greatnew vibrancy.”
