The information is from “Discover Dorset – Caravan and Camping”, a leaflet published by Dorset County Council. This was originally compiled in 2003 by contacting sites for information and updated in 2006 from information such as web sites. Not all sites in the District participated.

Visitor Attractions in West Dorset
ABBOTSBURY AREA Abbotsbury Children’s Farm Extensive children's farm for the under 11's. Includes soft play area.
Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens Twenty acres of woodland valley. Plants from all over the world. Teahouse and gift shop. Bird aviary and children's play area.
Abbotsbury Swannery The only place in the world where over 600 swans can be visited during the nesting and hatching time (end May- end June). Open all year.
Chesil Beach One of the finest barrier beaches in the world Chesil Beach (or Bank) stretches for approximately 29km (18miles) including 13k backed by the Fleet Lagoon, a haven for wildlife. It stretches from Chiswell (Chesil) Bay on the Isle of Portland to West Bay.
BEAMINSTER AREA Beaminster Museum Local history museum featuring Beaminster and its people from medieval to modern times, also the history of neighbouring villages and local archaeology and agriculture.
Broadwindsor craft and design centre Redundant farm complex of craft shops, workshops and award winning restaurant.
Mapperton House This has recently been chosen as the winner of Country Life's 'Nation's Finest Manor House'. Formal valley gardens beside 16th-17thC manor. Cafe for lunches and teas.
UK Llamas Guided day treks, suitable for all ages.
BRIDPORT AREA Bridport Museum From Romans to ropemaking.
Eggerdon Hill Fort This dates from the Iron Age over 2000 years ago.
Mangerton Mill 17th Century working water mill and museum of rural bygones, on the river Manger. Trout fishing and riverside walk. Tea room and local crafts.

Palmers Brewery One of the few traditional breweries left in Britain. Tours of the brewery will cover all aspects of the brewing process.
Pilsdon Pen Iron Age Hillfort and one of the highest points in Dorset at 277M/908 Ft. CHICKERELL AREA
Bennetts Water Gardens Eight acre site including extensive gardens, Chickerell Museum Tropical House, family nature trail, tearooms.
Fleet Observer Glass Bottomed Boat A small boat specifically built to explore the fleet lagoon.
Great Dorset Maize Maze and Farm Park Family attraction, with maize maze plus indoor and outdoor attractions. (summer season).
DORCHESTER Dinosaur Museum Britian’s original award winning Dinosaur Museum. Fossils, actual-size dinosaur reconstructions, multimedia and hands-on displays.
Dorset County Museum This award winning museum includes a video on the Roman invasion of Maiden Castle, a reproduction of Thomas Hardy's study. The Victorian Hall has real Roman mosaic floors. The Jurassic Gallery was opened by Sir David Attenborough in 2006 and contains moving dinosaurs, new displays and interactive activities for everyone.
Dorset Teddy Bear Museum From the earliest teddies to today's TV favourites.
Kingston Maurward Gardens and Animal Park Formal Edwardian garden with an ornamental lake in front of the 18th Century Mansion House. Plus small animals.
Maiden Castle The finest example of a prehistoric fort in this country, with enormous earthworks and complicated entrances. The banks enclose an area of 50 football pitches, which would have homed 200 families.
Old Crown Court and Cells The Court is famous for the trial of the Tolpuddle Martyrs in 1834.
Roman Town House The only Roman Town House to be seen in its entirety in Britain.
Terracotta Warriers Museum The only museum outside China exclusively dedicated to the Terracotta Warriors.

The Keep Military Museum A modern museum housed in a Grade II listed building that tells the stories of those who served in the regiments of the counties of Devon and Dorset regiments for the last 310 years.
The Tutankhamun Museum Tutankhamun's tomb perfectly reconstructed for the first time outside of Egypt. Facsimiles of treasures including his golden burial mask.
LYME REGIS AREA The Cobb Originally built of oak piles surrounding huge loose stones in 13th Century as an artificial harbour it was completely detached from land and was joined in 1756. The present Cobb was built of Portland stone in the 1820s. The old warehouses on the central part now house an Aquarium of local fish which is open to the public.
Town Mill Fully restored working watermill in the heart of Lyme Regis. Regular demonstrations of milling, art galleries, pottery, craft studios, restaurant, gift shop, bakery and 17th century walled garden.
Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre A range of displays about local geology, marine life, the countryside and history; plus interactive computers that enable visitors to take a virtual dive beneath the waters of Lyme Bay, or to identify the fossils found the world renowned fossil beach
SHERBORNE AREA Almshouse of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist The Almshouse was built in the 15th Century for "12 poor men and 4 poor women" and is now home to 18 elderly residents.
Castleton Waterwheel Museum The waterwheel can be seen working. In addition, several stationary engines are on display as well as a wide range of relevant artefacts.
Sherborne Abbey Abbey Church dating from Saxon times. The roof is the earliest great fan vault in existence. The most recent feature is the Great West Window by John Hayward, dedicated in 1998 in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.
Sherborne Castle Built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594, Sherborne Castle has been the home of the Digby family since 1617. Collections of art, furniture and porcelain are on view in the castle. Lancelot "Capability" Brown created the lake in 1753. Three floors of the castle and 30 acres of lakeside gardens are open to the public.

Sherborne Museum The museum houses a collection of items based on local history, with a large archive collection of photographs, pictures and drawings relating to the town, its environs and characters.
Sherborne Old Castle Sherborne Old Castle was built on a grand scale in the 12th century. Since 1646 it has remained a ruin in the midst of peaceful parkland. OTHER ATTRACTIONS
Athelhampton House and Gardens One of the finest 15thC manor houses, surrounded by Grade I Listed garden with fountains, pools and waterfalls.
Cerne Abbas Very attractive village with listed buildings, St Mary’s Church, the Cerne Giant carved into the hillside.
Forde Abbey and Gardens (near Chard) One of the top ten gardens in England surrounds this stately home on the banks of the River Axe.
Henleys Hillbillies, Buckland Newton At Old Henley Farm. Quad Bikes and Mini Mavriks. Badger watching at dusk.
Kingcombe Centre An residential study centre offering holidays, courses, B&B set in 450 acres of nature reserve.
Minterne Gardens Rhododendron garden with many fine and rare trees, landscaped in 18thC with lakes, cascades and streams.
Southern Counties Shooting Ltd, Wardon Hill, Evershot Clay shooting ground with instructors. Stag and Hen days plus corporate days a speciality.
Clay Pigeon Raceway, Wardon Hill, Evershot Kart racing circuit for British and International meetings.
Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum Bbanners and imac touchscreens tell the story of the 6 Martyrs of Tolpuddle who were transported to Australia in 1834 after forming a trade union
Zorbing, Bockhampton (near Dorchester) An adrenaline thrilling ride suspended in a large inflatable sphere.
