Tourism in Polovragi, Gorj

Polovragi is a commune placed in the Polovragi Hollow, located in the central-south-western corner of the country ,as part of Oltenian

Subcarpathic Hollow.

1. Natural heritage

The position of the locality , in the area of the Subcarpathians of Oltenia, which determines the variety and the structure of the relief ,the type of vegetation and the lack of pollution sources are key elements in the formation of this area's natural scenery.

Mountainous and foothill forms, the scientific importance of

the entire karst area determined its proclamation as a protected area.

The Oltet Gorges- about 2,2 km length, impresses through the wildness and

narrowness of the gorge. The entire Oltet Gorges area is very interesting because of the landscape and of its flora. Here are over three hundred species of plants.

The Polovragi Cave

The Polovragi Cave- is located in the south-western part of the Carpathian Mountains, a short distance from The Polovragi Monastery. It has a length of nine thousand one hundred meters. According to the legends, here lived Zalmoxis , a divinity of the Getae-Dacian people. In the nineteenth century, this cave was used as a hiding place by the outlaws ,and in 1821 here would be the hiding place of Iancu Jianu ,an outlaw and the captain of the Tudor Vladimirescu's army. This cave is a sight. It is also known as Pahomie's Cave.

The Oltet Creek Trail, accompanied by the forest road, is very spectacular. In the place called The Oltet Meadows, at the exit of gorges, upstream, there is a

proposed location for setting up a holiday village.

The forests are dense, represented by deciduous and coniferous trees, creates an attractive, clean environment, suitable for active

holidays;

2. Cultural heritage

The Polovragi Monastery, is over 500 years old ,includes a treasure museum with a rich collection of ancient icons ,on wood and glass and a huge library of old books with over 3,000 volumes in slavonic, romanian and greek.

The Captain Ursache's Cross- is found on The Stone of the people of Polovragi.The monument was dedicated in memory of a foreman of Novaci, who led the army and

ensured peace in this zone.

The Bolnita Church- The church has been entirely preserved without further intervention.

3.Indoor Lodging

In the Polovragi commune there are three tourist hosting structures, classified as guest houses of 2 and 3 stars. These 3 guest houses have a number of fifty two guest rooms.

The "Oltet Gorges" Pension- a three stars hotel, offers guests a number of fifteen rooms, ten double rooms and five apartments for up to four people. These fifteen rooms totals a number of forty hosting places and presents many features and facilities for free time spending.

The “Casa Mihăiescu” Pension- a two stars hotel, provides for lodging a number of eight places, divided into four double rooms (provided with bathroom, television, refrigerator and a telephone in each room)and other facilities for free time spending.

The "Dumitrescu" Pension- a two stars hotel, has a four people capacity, in two double rooms, provided with bathrooms.
