But local homeschoolers in Bend are learning that gap can be a very small thing. In a unique partnership, homeschoolers ages 5 to 15 are making regular visits to Touchmark. During these visits, residents in the memory care neighborhood become the audience for a variety of presentations—from dramatic readings to show-and-tell to science and history, the students’ performances vary widely. “When we arrive, the residents consistently shower us with warm smiles, a wave or two, and there is a general atmosphere of anticipation,” explains Bethany, a mother of four, “What a blessing each person is! They are giving our family the gifts of learning to engage and respect the elderly in new ways and listening ears for our presentations. We hope the presentations, our reflective smiles, and learning their names will bring them joy.”Another mom adds, “Joshua, Anna, and Zach feel very excited to present, because the folks there really encourage them by smiles, excitement, or outright words.” Kelly, another mom, feels like the visits are integral to educating well-rounded students. “I believe it is important to stay connected to the elderly people in our community. They have gone before us and have shaped the world in which we now live. Elders need to feel valued; they still have something to contribute to society.” (cont.)

Homeschooling—at TouchmarkSometimes, the gulf of experience between the young and older adults can seem wide.

We hope the presentations, our reflective smiles, and learning their names will bring them joy.”Another mom adds, “Joshua, Anna, and Zach feel very excited to present, because the folks there really encourage them by smiles, excitement, or outright words.”

Kelly, another mom, feels like the visits are integral to educating well-rounded students. “I believe it is important to stay connected to the elderly people in our community. They have gone before us and have shaped the world in which we now live. Elders need to feel valued; they still have something to contribute to society.”

It’s hard to tell who’s getting more out of the partnership. While students enjoy having an audience for everything from violin recitals to handmade valentines, the residents love the variety and the time with the kids.

“We look forward to these visits, which benefit everyone. The students build life skills and gift us their talents and friendship,” says Memory Care Administrator and Life Enrichment/Wellness Director Angela Stewart. “You can feel the energy and compassion flowing through the neighborhood.”

Kelly, mother of Samuel, 13, says, “This is a great opportunity to bridge the gap between generations!”

It’s spring! Visit Touchmark.

CAPTURING DELIGHT{FULL} MOMENTS

From picking brackets for basketball madness to dinners out on the town and a semiformal dinner, we’re packing in the fun times!

A desire to serve

Jim Cate wanted to enlist ever since he can remember. He even tried to convince his mother to let him enlist at age 17 when he graduated high school. Right after his 18th birthday in 1942, Jim became a Raider in the Marines. “I loved my time in the service,” says Jim, who enjoyed the camaraderie and the competitive aspect that came with training and serving.

On January 11, 1945, Jim and his fellow Raiders shipped out to sea for what they thought would be more training exercises. Just over a month later, they learned the whole reason for the “training.” They were part of the fleet that

was going to attack Iwo Jima.

During the battle, Jim’s sergeant needed a volunteer to go on a rescue mission to save a fellow soldier stuck on a nearby ship. Jim volunteered, and he has never forgotten that day. Sadly, the man

jumped on a landmine, which severely injured him.

Looking back, Jim says, “My four brothers and I were all in the service at the same time, and I’m thankful that all of us made it out alive.”

{COLOR}FULL Living—How does your garden grow?

Master gardeners are some of the most passionate, knowledgeable, and committed people I have ever met. They spend hours learning all the pros and cons of which plants need to go where. They assess soil, sun, and shade needs as well as overall balance for the environment and success for the garden. They dig in and plant—usually in their own terrain and often in the community—for a variety of causes and commitments that serve neighborhoods, cities, citizens, and wildlife and environmental goals. ...
