Healthy diet, exercise credited for longevity, quick recoveryMay is Older Americans Month, and the theme this year is “Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow.” Marge Ghiglione, 89, knows firsthand the payoffs of keeping active and taking classes to improve one’s balance. Recently, she had a stroke, but thanks to her consistent fitness routine, she recovered quickly with no noticeable effects.

She and her husband, Jim, have been married 54 years. About 30 years ago, they both became vegetarians and paid more attention to exercising.

“I think diet’s very, very important, and fortunately, we both like to exercise,” Marge says.

Their approaches differ, though. Jim prefers to work out on his own, while Marge enjoys the group classes and hikes offered at Touchmark Health & Fitness Club. The club is open to anyone 40 years and older.

“I like to be with people,” she said. “I like group activity.”

Her consistent attention to physical activity has paid off. She walks briskly around Touchmark at Fairway Village, the couple’s home for the last year. Before that, they lived nearby, and she participated in Touchmark’s Aqua Balance, a water-based class that strengthens the back and improves balance.

Amazing recovery In December, Jim realized Marge was having a

“I had five sessions with physical therapists from Touchmark Home Health—and I was back in SAIL (Stay Active & Independent for Life) classes and doing my other exercises,” she says, adding, “I was motivated!”

Master gardeners are some of the most passionate, knowledgeable, and committed people I have ever met. They spend hours learning all the pros and cons of which plants need to go where. They assess soil,

sun, and shade needs as well as overall balance for the environment and success for the garden. They dig in and plant—usually in their own terrain and often in the community—for a variety of causes and commitments that serve neighborhoods, cities, citizens, and wildlife and environmental goals. ...

May is Older Americans Month: Theme is A Safe Today & Healthy Tomorrow!

The public is invited to the Senior Health Fair Saturday, May 3 from 8:30 am to noon in the lobby.

Gather at the club for safety assessments, class demonstrations of SAIL and tai chi, demonstration of the NeuroCom® Balance Master® as well as hands-only CPR by the local fire department. Vendors and community resource exhibits will also provide helpful information.

This no-charge event will feature many community partners, including Area Agency on Aging, Vancouver Fire & Rescue, and Clark County Sheriff.

to perform tasks that get more challenging as the body ages. She can take the stairs instead of the elevator, maintain her balance while moving, sit gracefully, and get up out of chairs without assistance.

On the days she is not in SAIL classes, Marge attends the Rise and Shine classes that offer gentle warm-ups in the morning. “I try to get in a good hour or more every day,” she says.

After her class, she’s off to the fitness center for some time on the stationary bicycle. As the weather improves, she enjoys a walk around the neighborhood, up to the New Seasons Market, or around the Fairway Village community.

“It’s so beautiful here,” Marge says. When Marge and Jim were younger, they enjoyed hiking around the mountains in Washington, Jim’s home state.

Marge offers simple advice to those interested in improving their health.

“Exercise has to be part of your life,” she says. “Starting slow is a good idea. You’ve just got to get up and try it a little bit,” she says.

As for the time commitment, Marge has some thoughts on that.

“I think sometimes you have to give up something else, like a card game or TV program.”

Even a little activity, worked into a daily routine, is a great alternative to more invasive approaches to maintaining health as you age, she believes.

“Do what you can to stay active, and listen to your body!”

Good advice for Older Americans Month—and for that matter, every day of the year.

Master your balance. Live your Full Life. His right calf protested.

For fitness enthusiast Kevin Nixon, his return to running irritated his body, and he knew something was off.

“I’ve been an athlete for years, and I was trying to figure out why my calf was hurting,” says Kevin. “I found the balance analysis and Jan’s guidance provided the extra information to help me address the underlining problem: poor balance.”

Kevin worked with balance trainer Jan Beyer at Touchmark Health & Fitness Club on the NeuroCom® Balance Master® machine. “Balance issues and the subsequent ineffective body mechanics can affect anyone, from athletes like Kevin to older adults,” says Jan. “The result is movement that’s awkward, even painful, or potentially hazardous, when we think about falls. The machine helps us address these issues by providing specific evidence. Once we see the problem, we can make the positive changes.” Using the findings, Jan created an intervention exercise strategy for Kevin to challenge and refocus his balance.

During his follow-up test, the evidence highlighted what Kevin has already been experiencing—improved balance—and a happy calf. Before, Kevin could barely run a quarter mile because of leg pain. Now, he can run one to three miles with no pain. He’s also improved his biking technique.

“I’m now a strong believer that the balance assessment is essential for developing the right training or fitness plan,” says Kevin. “Whatever your age, balance is key.”

Develop the right training or fitness plan with the NeuroCom® Balance Master® This advanced assessment and rehabilitation system uses interactive computer technology to identify and objectively evaluate each individual’s unique balance and movement patterns.

Through a series of tests, the machine pinpoints your center of gravity as well as balance disparity that can contribute to falls and/or poor body mechanics, which can also contribute to discomfort.

Touchmark’s certified balance trainers will guide you through the tests in sitting and standing positions. Equipped with the results, the trainer will create customized exercises to help improve your balance.

The Balance Master is for … • Older adults who have experienced a fall, feel unsteady on their feet, or have spells of dizziness.

• Athletes of any age who want to address poor body mechanics due to an imbalance.

• Anyone looking to improve their form and efficiency.

The club offers the most advanced version of the Balance Master in Vancouver. It includes NeuroGames™ software that allows people to “play” computerized games by shifting their center of gravity.

For more information and to schedule your assessment, call or visit the club.
