Taking in history during tour

Residents walked through the Governor’s Mansion, built in 1927, and learned about local history, including previous officials who lived in the home. Today, Governor Fallin and her family live on the second floor. Touchmark resident Jimmie Cook is a volunteer at the mansion and assists with tours.

Bryce Crump’s 34 years of experience in construction, engineering, and energy management makes him a perfect fit as director of Maintenance Services at Touchmark.

In 2002, Bryce formed Energy Czar, Inc. and was involved in engineering projects for companies such as the San Francisco International Airport, Google, Lexar Media, California State University-Sacramento, University Union of Sacramento, and a host of others.

Bryce served as US regional control specialist and later Western District sales engineer at WattStopper. During his time, he received the Idea of the Year award for creating an energy-management product still in use today.

Bryce’s experience is not limited to the technical side of life. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Theology, is a licensed minister, and has been a missionary in Papua, New Guinea, and Australia. For several years,

he served as a pastor and volunteer chaplain for the City of Stockton Police Department, specializing with at-risk children in the Central Valley of California, an area known for gang violence and human trafficking.

In 2011, he and his wife founded BVC Global, a nonprofit organization that focuses on providing clean water, medical care, and education facilities in third-world countries. His most recent endeavor was providing a team of skilled craftsmen to build an educational complex in Port Villa, Vanuatu.

Bryce and his family moved from California to Moore, Oklahoma, to serve in a local ministry. He lives with his wife, Valerie, and

his three youngest children, Evan, Quaid, and Sarah. He enjoys fishing, camping, hunting, and metal detecting. Bryce has a passion for flying and is currently pursuing his private pilot’s license.

If you read the title and said to yourself, wait a minute, it’s July: July is the time to celebrate independence and unification. As countries and as individuals, we are keenly attracted to the notion of independence. Research tells us that it’s our lifestyle—things we do and choices we make—that determines how we will age.

According to research done at California State University, Fullerton by C. Jessie Jones and Roberta E. Rikli, a key element in maintaining independence later in life is sustaining one’s “fitness capacity (strength, endurance, agility, and balance).” Simple, right? So why declare interdependence? Because life happens. Appointments, other priorities, injuries, and many other reasons all serve to interfere with or distract our attention from exercise. Encouragement and accountability can be essential to sticking with a fitness program.

During this month when we celebrate unity and independence, ask someone to start a walking group with you. Join a class. Walk around the corner and visit a friend. Ask a Life Enrichment/Wellness team member about steps you could take with others to improve your fitness capacity. Declare interdependence—and gain more independence!
