Toenham Public School February 2019 Newsleer tot.scdsb.on.ca Dear Parents, This months character trait is Inclusiveness. At Tottenham Public School we are nurturing and modeling helping everyone to feel important, valued, and accepted. This is perfect as we think of the significance of welcoming new students to our school community, honouring Black History Month in February, and expressing our respectful caring for our family and friends around Valentines Day. I continue to be very proud of the way Tottenham students are growing in their capacity to demonstrate empathy, kindness, and caring in their actions and words. Daily, we remind our students to, Try Kindness! During this month when we celebrate Valentines Day, I would like to express my heart felt appreciation for the many parent volunteers who give so generously of their time and talents at TPS. A big hug goes out to our School Council under the leadership of Kathryn Srenk. Our school culture is richer because of ALL of our wonderful volunteers! February is known as Public Speaking month throughout schools across Ontario. I am very proud of all of our students in Grades 4 – 8 who are working tenaciously to research a topic or an idea, writing numerous drafts, practicing their speech, and then courageously presenting their speech in front of their classmates. Representatives from every grade will be selected by teachers to present their speech in front of a panel of judges, their peers, and parents in the gym on Monday February 4th beginning at 9:15 am. Top place finishers will have the option of representing TPS at the Tottenham Legions Public Speaking Competition on Saturday February 9th. Teachers have been working with sincere commitment and dedication to summarize the achievements and progress of their students in the Provincial Report Card. Reports are coming home on Friday February 15th. We would ask all parents to please take the time to read through the reports with your child(ren). Please focus on the next steps that our teachers have suggested in order to help your child to achieve their goals. These next steps focus on academic growth and also on the development of learning skills and work habits. We appreciate the time and support that parents are providing at home and know that together we are able to make a real difference in our childrenslives. Thank you for your partnership! A special thank you to our Student Leadership Team for their inspirational role modeling at TPS. We all appreciate the fun Theme Days and important fundraising events, such as Dance for Heart on Feb. 14th, that they plan. Special thanks to Ms. Beatty and Mrs. Goronovsky for their great coaching! Provide input on proposed 2019-2020 school year calendar The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) invites public school communities to submit input regarding the proposed school year calendar for next school year (Sept. 2019 to June 2020).

Starting Jan. 21, input can be provided by visiting www.scdsb.on.ca, hovering over ‘Elementary,’ or ‘Secondary,’ then ‘Planning for School,’ and clicking ‘School Year Calendar.’ All stakeholders including staff, school council members, parents/guardians, students and members of the school community are invited to provide input.

Is bedtime stressing you out? Kids need 10-12 hours of sleep every night, but sometimes getting them to bed can be frustrating. You can help create a

regular sleep schedule for your child by setting a clear bedtime and sticking to the same time every night. Start getting ready an hour before bed; turn off the TV, computers and phones. Spend quality time talking or reading stories to help

them unwind. Agree on how many you’ll read before you start! Keep their room dark, cool and quiet - a nightlight is fine. Remember, making sure your child gets enough rest will help improve their mood, behaviour and ability to learn.

For more bedtime tips, contact Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 to speak with a public health nurse, or visit the health unit website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org.
