    Genius?Thoughtful or Thoughtless?

by sub-editor Aditi MehendaleAcknowledging: google.co.uk, google images and chrismadden.co.uk

This weeks theme is the future, and as the futureis often related to technology, I thought maybe Idlook back on moments, in the past, admittedly, that must have seemed like moments oftechnological genius at the time, but would createa path towards evil in years to come.

    Nuclear Fission

In 1938 an Italian man called Enrico Fermi, discovered nuclear fission which is a process whereyou send two atoms hurtling towards each other at top

speed, until they collide. The atoms are split in two which was an amazing discovery. The outcomes?

Thoughtful: nuclear power was created an almostrenewable energy source which is fairly safe and veryuseful.

Thoughtless: some bright spark realized that you

could use nuclear fission to make bombs powerfulenough to destroy cities, creating the atomic (nuclear)bomb.

    Dynamite

Dynamite was patented in 1867 by Sir Alfred Nobel.Ironically, this was the man who founded the NobelPeace prize.Read the rest of this thought-provoking article onP2

Jokes aside, this weekstheme really is the future. I am looking atthe tea leaves now......I see Alex Jacobiwriting about........ Future technologies...Isee Abigail telling us about five inventionsof the future ... Alex Grocott looks at carsof the future ...hmmmm ...The tea leavesare hard to read now... but they hint ofdisaster befalling School Squirrel. Okayreading over, now you get down to readingit all.

Genius article continued from page 1Thoughtful: dynamite made quarrying easier, andwas also used in construction work and demolitionindustries.

Thoughtless: dynamite caused so many deaths, that when a newspaper misreported Alfred Nobelspassing, he was called the Merchant of Death.

    3D Printers

Coming back to the present, you may have heardof the 3D printer, a device which can create justabout anything out of plastic, as you will soon findout.

Thoughtful: as long as you have the money topay for a 3D printer, you can create just aboutanything you want out of plastic.

Thoughtless: recently, an American mandesigned a blueprint for his 3D computer, whichwas used to create a working gun. He then putthe blueprints online, and although the USgovernment has demanded that the blueprints arenow taken offline, the 3D gun design has had100,000 hits already. People are now worried thatpeople will use the 3D printer to mass produceguns.

Well, thats all from me. Just remember, if ever inyour life you come up with an ingenious invention ,make sure it cant be used as a weapon if it fallsinto the wrong hands.

The Future for Mr and Mrs Tovey

    by Nkechi Ogbogbo

As this weeks TT theme is The Future Ihave decided to interview Mr and Mrs Toveyon what comes after their retirement and

    this is what they said

Once weve settled in our new home we lookforward to seeing what opportunities arise. Weare going to live in Pembrokeshire- SouthWales. We would like to:

Walk the coastal paths with our twodogs, Cedar and Isla.

    Travel around the British Isles

Go to see a few Test Matches

And see our grandchildren who live in Rugby.

Having worked hard all our lives we cannot sitstill and do nothing!

Mr and Mrs Tovey have run the school for anAMAZING 38 years. The end of the summerterm will be a sad one for them and for us. Wewish them well with their future plans.

Future Technologies that will Never Exist. Lightsabers: are made-up weapons. Light just cant. stop 2 feet from the light source, also a beam of light. could not cut through materials.

Travelling faster than the speed of light: travelling fasterthan the speed of light would use way too much energy, theenergy it would have to use is bigger than the mass of theuniverse. You could not control the vehicle.

    . Human Teleportation:scientists cant make a

. teleporter that can transport the whole human body.

. Also the energy for the teleporter is simply impossible.

Anti-gravity: to create anti-gravity you would have to balancegravity with electromagnetism or aerodynamic lift.Generations of scientists have tried but it is simply impossible.

. Time machine: a time machine such as the one invented by

. the writerH.G Wells or The Tardis would need a wormhole in

. space and the energy of a star or a black hole to work and itcould only transport you back in time. The grandfatherparadox considered that technology that allows you to kill yourancestors should not exist because then the presentwould be mixed up.

Personal force fields: a force field would work withelectromagnetism but cant because of other forces, like gravity and the strong and weak forces, they aretoo weak or cant go short distances.

Coming back to life after cryonic suspension: this is wherethey freeze people and bring them back to life when they havefound a cure for what they are dying of. This cannot be donebecause if you freeze the brain you will damage the cells andkill the person anyway.

    Future Technologyby Alex Jacobi

People always wonder about the future, dontthey? They wonder what the world will be likein fifty or so years. Apparently it will be like

    this.

    Future Phones

Apple is good at launching the most life changingmachines and they are already working on aniPhone 6 and 7! Whether or not 3D screenscatch on, the iPhone 7 could have 3D imagery. The iPhone 7 is also meant to have a moreadvanced screen and wireless charging.

    Future Computers

Flexibility is going to be a big part of the future, for example Apple is thinking of making a flexibleiPad but who would ever think of making a roll-uplaptop? Meet the Rolltop which is designed tobe rolled up and wrapped around a cylinder and

    carried over your shoulder!

When texting a friend on a touch-screen, typingis very awkward but imagine a virtual keyboardthat you can link to your smart phone ortabletWell the Magic Cube made by Celluon isexactly that. Now that is cool!

    Future Robotics

When people imagine the future, they often thinkof hovering cars and robots running around anddoing all the housework! For a long time robotswere a science-fiction thing, but, in a few yearstime, there might be robots that can cut the grasswithout any driver and robot pool cleaners that

can clean, maintain and circulate more than 70gallons of water per minute. The future looksbright.

    Wide Games Of The Future

    by Henry Allan-Jones

The Summer is coming at last and its greatto play outside. We thought you might like

to try out some new outdoor games

Last week Creative Writing Club made up a fewgames to play at TMS in the grounds. Here is whatsome of us came up with.

    Highball

Henry and Ollie invented a game, which involvesonly a tennis racquet and ball with four to tenpeople on each side. Here is how you play.

    1. Split up into two teams, one attacking and onedefending.

    2. The attacking team makes a reasonable sizedcircle, but they select one person to bat.

    3. The defending team selects one bowler to bowland the rest of the defending team spread out andtry and catch the ball.

    4. The object of the game is to hit the ball up ashigh as possible, then run round the circle beforethe fielders either catch you out or pass the ball tothe bowler in the middle.

    5. Then the runner has to stop and you switchbatsman.

    6. Once the attacking team have all had a go, thenyou swap around. Remember no contact!

Tom andAlex came up with a game called

    Treeball

You need the trees by the swimming pool and thecar park to play. You also need two teams and atennis racquet and ball. Here is how you play

    1. One batsman stands at the first tree and bats. The bowler and the defending team field.

    2. The object of the game is to run all the waydown to the end of the line of trees and back onthe other side without being stumped at thestarting tree.

    3. You get two points for running all the way roundand one for halfway.

    Real Life PredictionsWhich Came rue

by Ijeoma Ogbogboacknowledging the BBC News Magazine website

Predictions are made all over the world fromschool classrooms to inside ParliamentBuildings. When you make a prediction, yougive some thought to what is likely to happenin the future.Imagine the surprise of a civil engineercalled John Elfreth Watkins if he had knownthat his predictions made in 1900 wouldcome true

Digital Colour Photography :"Photographs will be telegraphed

from any distance. If there be a battlein China a hundred years hence, snapshotsof its most striking events will be publishedin the newspapers an hour later....photographs will reproduce all ofnature's colours.""

Television : "Man will see around the world. Personsand things of all kinds will be brought within focus ofcameras connected electrically with screens at opposite

ends of circuits, thousands of miles at a span."

Tanks :"Huge forts on wheels will dash across open spaces atthe speed of express trains of today."

Mobile phones : "Wireless telephone and telegraphcircuits will span the world. A husband in the middle ofthe Atlantic will be able to converse with his wife sittingin her boudoir in Chicago. We will be able to telephoneto China quite as readily as we now talk from New Yorkto Brooklyn."

The Acela Express Train :"Trains will run twomiles a minute normally. Express trains one hundredand fifty miles per hour."

If you want to know what he did not get right, look at the website BBC News magazine for Ten100 Year Predictions Which Came True.

It is quite amazing these things have come true!Tell your family your predictions and see if theycome true in the future.

    Inventions for the future

    by Lucy England

I have always wondered what we will usein everyday life in the future. These are afew of my ideas

I thought about the new types of transport wecould come across. I think we could bedriving a form of bubble car down the road, with all around sound speakers also voicecontrolled gadgets and massage chairs for aluxurious ride and maybe no wheels!

Another great idea would be to have smallrobots to go round your house all daycleaning the hardest areas to reach andgetting rid of the toughest of stains fromcarpets or clothes. These amazing little

robots could also have a built in dockingstation to play your favourite tunes out loud tothe whole street as he clings to your side asyou are his one and only master.

Finally, I think that there will be a suit for allaquatic animals to allow them to experiencelife on dry land with spaces to store a largeamount of water to make them able to survivecertain periods of time without being in thesea. This suit will also allow them to use a

    phone without getting it wet!

But what the future will actually bring no oneknows!!

    Transported!A story by Lucy Allan-Jones

It was a dark and stormy night in Cape Town. Emily lay in bed listening to the seas ragingoutside. Suddenly an especially big wave crashed into the wall. This was one of thedisadvantages about living by the sea. But was it - a wave? It sounded more like a metal objectthan water. Then she heard a thud. It had landed on the sand. Emily didnt waste any time. Shewas out of bed and hurrying to get her clothes on, all the time wondering what it could be. Shepeered outside. It was still pelting it down though the thunder and lightning had stopped. Shepulled on her raincoat and wellies and yanked open the door.

There on her front doorstep was a time machine. It was unmistakable. It was just like the onesEmily had seen in films. A long aerial was poking out of the top of the thing, as thin as a piece of

wire. Without hesitating, Emily tried to find the door but there was no door - instead there was asmall hatch. The hatch was enlarging, as Emily got nearer, until it was the size of a door. Shecautiously prised it open and gasped.

Inside the time machine, there was a velvet carpet lining the floor. Every wall was coated in goldleaf and there was a flat screen TV in the centre of the room. Emily felt her body stepinvoluntarily backwards. Without meaning to she foolishly pressed one of the thousands ofbuttons and the machine hurtled into life. Emily abruptly fell over. She was in a time machine andit was taking her to the future.

After several minutes of uncontrollable hurtling, the time machine stopped. Emily got to her feet

shakily and opened the hatch. It was like stepping into a dream. Everything was white andsparkling. A woman approached her, saying, Hello what would you like today?

Spinning around, Emily saw a sign. It boasted, The very best smoothies in Engiland. At lastshe found her voice, Dont you mean England?England? England was this country 200 years ago! What year are we in now?2213Remembering her manners, Emily said thank you and walked away to distance herselffrom the mad woman. She soon discovered that everything wasnt white as she had thought. Itjust had that appearance from a distance. In fact, everything in the future was a shade brighter

than in the past and a lot more advanced. Every house had solar panels and every person waswalking. There were no cars. Emily wandered aimlessly around, too dazed to take it all in.She had had dreams like this but this was no dream - this was the future.

And there was no getting back.

She would stay here for the rest of her life.

Car technology is changing all the time. Carmanufacturers are making cars that go fasterbut are better for the environment.

The BMWi range markets itself on sustainability. It runs on electricity and so cuts down onpollution and the use of natural resources. It ismade of lightweight materials to offset the heavy

weight of the battery used to power the vehicleand so is economical and speedy. It is totallyrecyclable. It has many innovative apps to makeit nice to drive in the city. It is meant to beabsolutely awesome! It might be 70,000 andover.

This is a Lexus 2054. It is meant to be very fast.Itwas designed by the Lexus car designer for aSteven Spielberg film. It was driven by Tom

Cruise in some action scenes. Lucky him!

It is called a concept car because it is not beingmanufactured for sale. If it was, it would be about100,000 or even more than that! The car runson fuel cells and has a crash-proof body. It alsohas biometric security features which means thatit recognises your pupils or your fingerprints.

The Lexus design for the future is a car that willdrive itself, take dinner orders verbally, and

select music to match the moods of the peopletravelling in it.

This is a futuristic Ford Shelby Gt 500 which willbe about 20mph faster than it was before and itwill maybe cost twice as much as a normal one.

So, whether its speed you want or good designor a car that is environmentally friendly, theseare great designs for the future.

    What Is The Future ofSport?

    by Max Curtis

Can anyone really beat Usain Bolts 9.58second 100 metre record? Can anyone reallyget more than Michael Phelpss 22 Olympicrecords? Maybe human athletic performancehas reached its limit? Ormaybe its time forsomething different?

    What about computer simulation?

What about having no human athletes at all and

instead watching computer simulated sport ? Thenyou would always be assured of best action and amost exciting game.

    Change for the Better

Rules change over time. Have you heard anyonesay They just dont play rugby like they usedto!? Maybe this is for the best but certainly withthe improvement in technology and the design of

equipment sport will continue to change. Doesanyone still play tennis with a wooden racquet? No. The game is much faster and more excitingnow that the racquets are made of carbon fibre. Ifyou look at what professional swimmers now wear- men and women you will see that their suitsmake them more aerodynamic and thereforefaster. Long gone are the times when we wore apair of swimming shorts!

    The bionic athlete

In the past losing a leg meant that everyonethought you could not take part in sport.Nowadays, however, a prosthetic leg means thatyou can run, and run fast. Just think of OscarPistorius The blade runner - he can keep up withthe best. Lighter weight wheelchairs mean thatmore sports are being adapted for wheelchairusers. We now have wheelchair rugby and

basketball as well as athletes competing in racessuch as the London Marathon. In the future willthey compete with able-bodied athletes?

    New sports

Over recent years new sports have beendeveloped, skateboarding and BMX werenot around years ago. What is in the future -maybe space diving or jet powered jet skis? How exciting would that be!

Maybe it will all happen. I hope so. I lovesport I wonder if Mr Tovey and Mr Joneswould consider space diving oneWednesday afternoon?

Or maybe some of this in the swimming pool please, Mrs Hinchliffe?!

    V

But the question is who will ask?Any volunteers?

During the Easter holidays my family and Ivisited Tiphaine and Tanguy at their house, near Toulouse, in France. On the first day wecelebrated Easter. We did an egg hunt intheir garden. There were 104 eggs hidden! InFrance, they dont have an Easter bunnyhiding the eggs; they believe that a giant bell

flies over and the eggs fall out as it rings.

The next day, I went to school with Tiphaine.I met some of her friends, Tara, Enes andTalie. After we had put our coats in theclassroom, we went to the school chapel tocelebrate Easter. We sang French songs.

At lunchtime we had to queue in the canteento get food it was pasta and meat.

In the English lesson, Tiphaine and I wereasked to demonstrate an English phoneconversation the class loved it.

At home time everyone had to wait outsideuntil their parents came and took them away.
